Chapter 3
Turns out I did see them again. Both of them were in my third period. Apparently, they were the two students that were missing the first two days of school. That just seemed stupid to me, I mean, who would skip the first two days of school when everyone gets a run-down of the courses and meet everyone? Either way, I couldn't get my eyes to move from the girl. During attendance, which I usually paid no attention to, I listened really closely for her name.
"Skylar Lockheart?"
"Here," I replied lazily, not caring.
"Lynn Mallor?" called the teacher a few names after mine.
"Present." The mystery girl raised her hand, smiling brightly.
I spent a little bit just looking at her after that. Stopping myself after a few seconds, I mentally pointed out the fact that I was acting creepy. The attendance didn't really interest me after that and I mostly stopped listening I did, however, notice when 'mystery boy's name was called.
"Liam Martins?"
"Here ma'am," he replied.
Lynn Mallor and Liam Martins, two people who were able to catch more of my attention than even my own boyfriend could. The teacher, Mrs. Sanders soon pulled me out of my thoughts when she started giving the class instructions.
"Okay class, so today we're going to be doing a partnered math activity focusing on what we talked about yesterday. For those of you who weren't here yesterday, I would like some volunteers to partner up with you to fill you in on what you missed."
I don't exactly know why, but I immediately shot up my hand to volunteer as a partner for one of them. It seemed like I was the only one who wanted to partner up with them besides one other girl. Everyone else wanted to partner up with their friends I guess. Fine by me.
"Alright, May, you go with Liam and Skylar with Lynn," the teacher instructed.
I walked over to Lynn while Liam made his way over to the girl, May.
"Hi there, I'm Lynn." She brilliantly smiled at me, extending her hand.
"Skylar." I shook it in greeting.
"It's nice to meet you." I couldn't help but notice how nice and honey sweet her voice sounded.
With how inviting she sounded, I wanted nothing more than to hear her speak some more. I kept that thought to myself though, opting for the more productive option. Looking in my math textbook, I started doing my part of the work which was mostly just a review of last year's work. Looking over at Lynn, I noticed that she already seemed to know what she was doing.
"You're pretty good at this for not being here for the review lesson this was on," I commented.
"Well, I always like to do my best in the presence of beautiful girls." She smiled at me, tucking a strand of her auburn hair behind her ear.
I watched her every move, I just couldn't seem to pry my attention from her. There really wasn't any reason I could find for me to be this invested in Lynn, yet she seemed to be the only thing that kept my attention.

By the end of the period, Lynn faced me and handed me a strip of paper. Saying nothing, she turned around and walked to the door, her sundress flowing behind her as she went. I glanced down at the paper to see what looked like a phone number written on it. Afterwards, I found myself staring at Lynn as she sauntered out of the classroom. Why had she captured my attention so much?
After Lynn left, I made my way to last period English where to my surprise, my eyes landed back on Liam. I decided that before the class started properly, I would go talk to him.
"Hey, Liam right?"
"Uh, yeah?" he replied confusedly.
"I'm Skylar, we just had math together." He nodded in understanding. "So, I was just wondering, why weren't you here for the first two days of school?"
"Oh, well my sister and I just moved not that long ago so our parents kept us home for the first two days to let us get settled in a bit and unpack," explained Liam.
"Who's your sister?"
"Lynn, she also has math with us."
"Lynn Mallor?" I prompted.
"Yuh huh." He nodded.
"Don't you two have different last names though? Yours is like Matthews, isn't it?"
"Martins, actually, and we're step-siblings. Our parents got married not long before we moved."
"Oh, okay. Uh, hey, do you and Lynn want to join my friends and me for lunch tomorrow?" I asked, rubbing my neck and leaving my hand to rest there.
"Sure, I'll just have to run it by Lynn first though." I nodded and the late bell rang signalling class to start.
I walked over to my desk in the center of the room and Liam did the same a few desks over at the only empty desk. English was one of my more liked subjects since I know it can really come in handy so I actually tried to pay attention in this class.
After class, I made my way to my car and sat to wait for Hunter's slow self. I honestly never understood what took him so long to get outside. Some time while I was waiting for my turtle of a brother, my thoughts somehow made their way to Lynn. My mind focused on her beautiful, bright blue eyes, her curled auburn hair, her cute, freckle-slattered face... Wait, what?
I shook the thoughts from my head. *I do not think her eyes are beautiful and her face isn't cute,* I told myself.
Forcing myself to think of something else, I turned my attention to thoughts of my amazing boyfriend, Tony. Thoughts of our relationship played in my mind so I could take it off... other things. I replayed all our firsts, our first date where I felt so anxious since he asked me of all people. Our first kiss where I hardly knew what I was doing, so Tony assured me it'd be fine and lead my actions. After that, I thought of our first fight where he confessed he was using me to get back with someone else before telling me he ended up really falling for me. I remembered all of these great things and continued to keep my mind busy, smiling as I remembered just why I was dating Tony.
Just then, I finally saw Hunter exit the school a lot later than he usually does. An hour later actually. Damn, and I thought he was slow before?
"What the holy hell took you so long?" I questioned as he got in the car.
"Oh, did I not tell you? I joined the play's band ensemble. I'm the pianist," he explained, moving his blonde-tipped, brunet bangs out of his eyes. "The school wanted to use live music for the play this year."
I nodded in understanding and drove away from the school. At home, I took off what I was wearing and put on a pair of fuzzy pyjama pants and one of my many band t-shirts. Relaxing into the couch, I flicked on the tv and flipped through Netflix until I saw Scary Movie 5. Putting the movie on, my lips curled into a small smile.
*I could use a good horror parody,* I thought as it started.

Around halfway through the movie, my dad Marty came into the house. After he took off his work boots, he trudged to the kitchen and dropped take-out on the counter.
"Hey, dad," I greeted as I continued to look at the screen.
"Hello, Skylar. When you're done with that movie, go eat. I didn't pay for this food just for it to go cold."
I hummed in agreement and he was off to his room upstairs. Another half an hour or so in front of the screen and the movie ended. Stretching, I got up to go eat the KFC my father had oh so elegantly chucked on the table. Shouting for Hunter so he knew to come and eat as well and receiving a muffled "in a minute" in return, I began getting my own food. Hunter could usually be found cooped up in his room painting or drawing and would shut out the world, sometimes missing meals because of it. Really would have been a shame if I let him starve in that room of his just so he could finish an art piece. Since I knew dad wouldn't go out of his way to say anything about it to him, it just seemed like the right thing to do.
After I got my food and sat back down on the couch, I saw Hunter come down the stairs before trotting over to the food to get his own serving. He took a seat beside me on the couch and we both started eating in silence.

Not long after eating, I went to my room to play on my phone. Soon enough, I had finished looking through my messages and skimming my social media before getting bored. I then started to play some random game downloaded on my phone until a thought occurred.
"Oh yeah, I got Lynn's number today," I said to myself.
I walked over to my jeans which I chucked on my bedroom floor when I got home and pulled out the number she handed me. Typing the number and saving it into my phone, I called it.
After the third ring, someone picked up. "Hello?" Lynn's honey voice filled my ears.
"Uh, hey. It's Skylar from math class," I replied.
"Oh, pretty girl."
"Why do you keep saying that?"
"Because it's true. I think you're really pretty," she responded.
"Uh, thanks." Her answer kind of surprised me and I wasn't sure how to respond.
"So, not that I don't like this little chat, but is there a reason you called?"
"Not particularly, I just wanted to talk."
"Oh? So I've already made such an impression that you're already calling for no reason? I'm flattered," Lynn joked. "Anyway, I heard you wanted Liam and I to join you for lunch?"
"Yeah, you interested?"
"Honestly, I'd take any excuse to see more of you. Not to mention I haven't exactly made any friends yet." She laughed awkwardly.
"Well, you have me now." I smiled even though she couldn't see it.
"Thank you, Skylar. I knew I picked the right person to want to talk to."
We continued to talk for hours after that and our conversation lasted into the late hours of the night. Our conversations ranged from funny stories to thing about our personalities. All in all, we learned a good deal about each other that night. We may not have had too much in common, but she was a great person to talk to and I certainly started congratulating myself for inviting her to join me for lunch.
"Man, it's one o'clock. Do you think we should hang up now?" I asked, checking the time.
"I mean, I could stay up all night listening to your voice. If you want to sleep though, I won't protest."
"Well, I don't have to go to sleep. I'll stay up if you do." Not that I wanted to admit it at the time, but I wanted to listen to her warm, sweet and inviting voice a while longer. As long as I could really.
"Great, it's settled then."
With that, we stayed up the whole night talking about anything under the sun. The only time we pried ourselves from our phones was when we had to get ready for school and even then we were both reluctant. Even though we had only met a day earlier, we already had an undeniable connection. It was like we had been old friends for years. There was just something about her that made me want to tell her everything, and her the same since she told me so much of her life in the span of the night.
I smiled as I got ready for the day. Although I did feel pretty tired, I didn't let it bother me too much. Finishing my shower, I picked out some dark blue jeans, a random t-shirt and my Panic! at The Disco band sweater. Pulling my shoulder-length, magenta-streaked hair into a ponytail, I gave myself a once-over and left the house to wait in the car. I knew Hunter would be out soon enough and I could just go to the breakfast club at school to eat. Also, I made a mental note to go to the dollar store close to the school and buy myself a few energy drinks so I wasn't struggling so much to stay awake just walking down the hallway. Rolling my eyes, I sighed at the thought of how my actions were going to stupidly effect me today. In the meantime though, I decided it would be nice to message Lynn. I don't know why over the short time I'd known her I got so attached but, I did.
Me: Hey Lynn
Lynn: Hi there pretty girl :)
Back for more already I see lol
I ignored the latter comment and continued texting.
Me: Stop calling me that -.-
Lynn: Well that's what I have you saved as in my phone lol
Me: ...
After the interaction, we continued to talk until Hunter came to the car and I had to turn my phone off to drive to school. Parking the car, I was greeted by Tony for once. Usually Tony would come a lot later and I wouldn't see him until about ten minutes before the bell.
Hunter basically ran off into the school, no doubt to find Natalie and I was left alone with my boyfriend.
"Hi, Tony." I smiled.
"Hey, babe," he replied, giving me a peck on the lips.
Tony slinked his arm around my waist, letting his hand roam to my ass, squeezing it. He soon let his grip loosen and moved us towards the school. I was kind of used to stuff like this by now. Tony always was pretty handsy, but it never really bothered me. When we got in, I looked around for a certain girl with beautiful auburn hair.
*Not beautiful.* I shook my head discretely.
Maybe a minute later, I saw Lynn's faintly freckle covered face smiling in my direction which got me doing the same. Soon enough she had walked up to me, Tony still by my side.
"Hiya pretty girl," Lynn said when she got closer, momentarily wrapping an arm around my shoulders.
I felt Tony's grip, now on my side, tighten and a scowl made its way to his face.
"Hey, Lynn. I don't think you two have met. This is Tony, my boyfriend." I tried to lighten Tony's mood with this.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Tony." Lynn held out her hand, but Tony just grunted and made no move to shake it. "Okay then..." Lynn awkwardly retracted her hand.
I could already tell Tony wasn't going to get along well with Lynn, but that wasn't going to change the fact that she and Liam were sitting with us at lunch. Forgetting about that thought for a bit, I walked to the home ec. room to get some food. On the way, tried to get Tony warmed up to Lynn with little success. By the time I'd eaten and the bell rang, Tony still seemed to dislike Lynn. Tony kissed me - probably a lot longer than he should have - before heading to class.
"Well, that was... interesting. I'll uh, see you at lunch." Lynn semi-awkwardly approached me and held out her hand.
I shook it and after our hands retracted, Lynn swiftly brought me into a quick, unexpected hug before rushing away. The sudden act of affection made my cheeks go a bit warm. I was sure to have a really eventful time as I've already witnessed.
