March 2nd, 1889,

This is my first entry in this journal since I first received it for my birthday celebration a year ago, so please do forgive me for the disuse, dear diary, however believe me when I say there is good reason for my sudden interest in you.
With the Easter holiday fast approaching, father's sweets shop is doing wonderfully! In fact, since the Saint Valentine's Day holiday he has been so understaffed in the sudden rush of customers that I've had to work the register for the past several weeks! I believe our tiny shop is even becoming a source of competition for a local branch of the Funtom Candy Company—thus the reason for this entry.
I am uncertain, dear diary, but lately I have begun to feel as though our little shop is being watched . . .
