5. Let 'Em In

"Poppy? What are you doing come in, come in." My father was beyond concerned as I was chattering at their front door in the pouring rain. Mascara was by now probably all the way down my cheeks from crying and I was completely dazed in a haze of sadness.

"George and I had an argument." I spoke trying not to let my voice quiver.

My step mother Rosetta came into sight, immediately gasping in horror as she saw me.

"Dear let's get you some warm clothes for heavens sake!" She turned back around going to fetch some.

"About, Brian?" He asked seeming to tiptoe around my loss delicately.

He and the kids had come visit me the next day after Brian passed, and although seeing my half brothers and sister always lightened my mood, I hadn't felt like doing much talking that day. George had done most of the talking for me, which is why I knew my father assumed it was on the subject of Brian's passing.

"No, George was in a really bad mood, and, I'm just all so confused right now," my voice began to quiver slightly.

"-confused-" He encourage me to carry on.

"I'm pregnant." I confessed scared how he might reacted.

His lips turned upwards into a smile.

"-really?" He looked pleased, watching intently as I nodded with tears coming to my eyes.

"You're pregnant?" Caroline gasped in pure shock.

I realized Harry and Caroline had been listening in from where Rosetta had peaked her head in the foyer to see me.

Their younger brother Teddy was probably well asleep by now at this late hour, only being two years old by then.

I nodded looking at the two of them with fear in my eyes.

"It's alright love." She looked at me with a melancholy grin seeing how emotional I was becoming and came to give me a hug regardless of my sopping wet clothes.

"I'm going to be an uncle?" Harry inquired deep in thought, his twelve year old brain probably exploding.

I nodded as Caroline and I broke away from each others arms, watching as Harry's face lit up in delight.

"Here you go dearie, I've got some nice cozy pyjamas and a robe, let's get you changed into them before you become hypothermic, you've got two people to think about now." She spoke handing me over the clothing, lecturing me in a motherly fashion.

I followed her into the guest room to change without saying much. They all decided it was best I stay that night, knowing it was best both George and I cool down before we even think about talking about becoming parents.

Sometimes I wondered now a days if George thought much about me as he used to.

He had become very enthralled into the world of music, spiritually and business I wasn't entirely sure if we had really even spent real quality time together in months before Brian passed.

"I kind of like the sound of being a grandfather, you know, cross it off the bucket list." My father thought out loud as him and I sat by his fireplace together to warm up once everyone else had gone to bed.

I smiled faintly with a small shake of my head.

"Well you might the youngest grandpa I've ever seen." I remarked playfully taking a sip of tea Rosetta had made for me before going up to bed.

He let out a small laugh, seeming to have a lot on his mind.

"How did this happen?" He looked off into the fire pit once again thinking out loud, causing me to nearly choke on my tea.

"Well, Dad, it was a Friday night, I believe Buddy Holly was playing-" I began sarcastically.

"-I didn't mean like that." He cringed stopping me before I could continue.

"Were you two, trying for a baby?" He looked shocked having previously having no knowledge of me wanting children.

I shook my head looking down.

"-Well you've picked the right guy to have a child with." He nodded with a grin wanting to cheer me up.

"When he's not being daft." I added pursing my lips.

My dad laughed before the telephone rang suddenly, my father looking over with a sigh.

"Do you mind?" He asked before he left to go get it.

I shook my head with a small grin, although feeling the same way I had when George had done the same, my heart sinking.

As he picked up the telephone to answer I saw his expression change as he looked up to me mouthing that it was George.

I motioned for him to not tell George I was staying here, needing some time for myself without him trying to come and talk it out just yet.

"-yes she's called me and she says she's fine, but I think she needs some time to clear her mind." He spoke firmly, his lawyering coming in handy right about now.

"No, she isn't with Eric." He spoke after a brief pause.

I rolled my eyes wondering how little trust he must have in me.

"Alright, bye now- yes I'll let you know if she tells me- alright, bye George." My dad said handing up the phone.

"He's really worried y'know, you left him right after you broke the news." My father sounded wary, yet not wanting to step on my toes.

"I'll call him tomorrow, I promise, I just can't deal with it now." I shook my head, seeing him nod in understanding.

After a rough night of sleep I woke up the next morning with the urge to puke my brains out, barely making it to the bathroom before I spilled the contents of my stomach into the toilet bowl.

Rosetta came running into the bathroom having heard my stomping from the kitchen where she was probably cooking breakfast for the kids.

"Oh dear, morning sickness is a pain." She sighed coming to rub my back as I kneeled over the toilet bowl.

"How did you deal with this three times?" I heaved again feeling immediately exhausted even though I had been awake for less than five minutes.

"Remembering in the end I was creating a life." She smiled kindly.

It sounded extremely cheesy, but I suppose it was the truth.

I hadn't thought much about actually having a real baby to take care of, mostly because it scared me to death. It was difficult to manage my own life and George's as it was, but having to take care of another was the thought that kept me up at night.

She helped me clean myself up before bringing me to the kitchen where Teddy, Caroline and Harry all sat at the dining table eating breakfast.

My father had probably left for work by now at his firm, but I was glad I had spent some time talking to him last night. It was rare we had heart to hearts like Brian and I had often had, but it was nice knowing he would be there if I needed him.

"Poppy!" Teddy shouted just now seeing me here for the first time, squirming in his seat wanting to come see me.

He had an especially soft spot for me as I did for him and his charm. He was blonde haired and blue eyed much like my father and I, showing off his deep dimples as he smiled.

"Sleep well?" Caroline inquired with a grin.

"Very well, thank you." I lied with a smile, not wanting to worry anyone with all the grief and heartbreak that was going on inside of me in the moment.

There was a knock at the door, all of our heads turning curiously.

"I've got it." Rosetta sighed walking over to the front door.

"Have you thought of any names for the baby?" Harry inquired with a toothy grin, exposing a couple missing teeth.

"I haven't," I bit my lip with a childish grin.

"Have you two got any?" I inquired with a smirk.

"Michelle." Responded Caroline with a smug smirk after a second of thought.

"-Rigby." Harry added, raising an eyebrow thinking he was clever.

"Cheeky." I responded with an eye roll.

My eyes flicked to Teddy for a second seeing he was already back to eating his Cheerios. My heart nearly exploded as I kept thinking in a matter of months I would have a smaller version of him to take care of.

"Poppy! It's for you dear." Rosetta called coming back into the dining room.

My heart jumped into my throat. I began to worry George had known better than what my father said, coming to skin me alive for leaving like that. Going over hesitantly, relief washed over me as I saw Paul's face.

"How did you know I was here?" I inquired shocked.

"Call it McCartney intuition." He shrugged with his lips forming a thin smile.

"Eric told you, didn't he?" I leaned against the door frame watching as a coy smile snaked on his lips.

"That's besides the point," he began waving his hands in dismissal, "Can we talk?" He inquired worriedly.

I nodded, unsure of what was to come.
