CHAPTER FOUR!
"Are you sure we're going the right way?" Luke asked, breaking the silence. Leaves crunched under the group's feet as they trekked through the forest. Imara sighed while she continued to trudge forward with the group, trying not to show her annoyance. She understood his concern, but the constant questioning was starting to become irritating.
"Yes, Luke. For the hundredth time, yes." Eli muttered, starting to get annoyed. They've been following the path they took when Eli had been sleepwalking, and so far, everything seemed to be the same. Luke wouldn't stop asking though if they were there yet or if they were sure they were going the right way.
Alissa looks at Luke with annoyance. "I will not hesitate to 'accidentally' push you into a thorn bush if you keep asking."
Luke holds up his hands defensively, backing off, his expression a mix of fear and embarrassment. He knew he was being annoying, but the uncertainty of the forest was getting to him. He swallows hard, trying to muster some composure. "Hey, calm down, dude. I was just asking."
"Hey, Lu, want a gummy worm?" Imara asked, opening her bag and offering him one. She knew he was getting antsy, and she hoped a snack would help distract him. She often had some snacks with her just in case. She was glad she had some with her now.
Luke's eyes lit up at the offer, and he eagerly grabs a handful of gummy worms. "H*** yeah! Thanks, Immy." He grinned as he popped a gummy worm into his mouth. The sugary treat seemed to lighten his mood, if only a little.
"Alright, guys," Imara said with a small smile, "Let's keep moving. We're making progress, even if it doesn't feel like it right now."
Eli nods, clearly trying to rein in his frustration. "Just stay close and keep your eyes peeled. We should hit a clearing soon."
Alissa takes a deep breath, shaking her head but smiling slightly as she watched Luke's mood lift with the gummy worms. Her face brightened more when Luke offered her some gummy worms. "Want one, Alissa?" he asked, holding out the bag.
Alissa's annoyance fades as she accepted a couple of the treats with a nod. "Thanks, Luke. I guess I could use a little sugar too."
As she munched on the gummy worms, the group resumed their trek through the forest with a slightly more relaxed atmosphere. Imara smiled after watching that interaction, happy that she could help ease Luke's boredom and thought it was sweet that Luke was trying to lighten the mood, despite his earlier frustrations. The candy seemed to bring a small but welcome shift in dynamics. She ate a handful of gummy worms herself, offering Alissa some who eagerly took some. She tried offering Eli some, but he was too focused on finding the tree stump. So she shrugged and continued to eat her gummy worms, enjoying the sweet treat. After awhile she put the gummy worms up, continuing to walk with her friends.
Soon enough, Imara stops which caused the others to stop as well. "What is it?" Luke asked him, raising a brow. "Shh.." She said softly. "I think we're close. I can hear our parents nearby, can't you guys?" She questioned, glancing at Alissa and Eli.
Alissa nods, realizing her friend was right. "Yeah, I can hear them. But not really good, we should try to get closer." She carefully listened for any further sounds that might indicate their parents were nearby. "How are we gonna sneakily get close to our parents who most are werewolves?"
Luke sighs. "They would be able to sense us there, if they haven't already."
"We have to be careful. I think our parents are all focused on the tree stump so that might help us." Imara suggests. She glances around, scanning their surroundings for any signs of movement or sound. "Okay, let's try to move quietly and stay low. Stay close to the trees and use them as cover. We'll try to get as close as possible without being noticed."
The group nodded in agreement, their determination fueling their movements as they carefully made their way through the forest. They moved slowly and deliberately, their senses on high alert for any signs of their parents or other potential threats. As they got closer, the voices of their parents grew louder, their conversation becoming clearer. Imara strained to listen, trying to make out what they were saying.
"...Must be around here somewhere." Imara heard her dad's voice say, sounding determined.
"Yeah, but where exactly?" She heard her mom's voice, tinges with frustration. "I mean, it's not like it has a big neon sign pointing to it or anything. That would be really helpful though."
"What is it?" Aunt Lydia suddenly asked, sounding nervous.
It's quiet for a few moments before Uncle Scott replies, "Someone's following us. They've been following us pretty much the whole time."
Imara's heart sank at that and her shoulders slump in defeat, leaning her head on Eli's shoulder. She thought that they had been doing a pretty good job at being sneaky he had thought they had been doing a pretty good job at being sneaky. The realization that their parents had noticed them following stung, but she wasn't entirely surprised. After all, they were all part supernatural beings. Most of them had heightened senses, making it challenging to sneak up on them undetected.
"Who?" Lydia's voice clearly still sounds nervous and they heard someone move, but they didn't know yet she had stepped back to hide behind Malia, who sent her a look.
Alissa sighs heavily when she felt someone grab her arm and pull her out from behind the tree. She knew it was her dad, she recognized his scent. She smiles sweetly at him as she steps out from behind the three. "Hey, dad. What's up?" She crossed her arms, leaning against the tree casually once her dad had let her arm go. She grinned at him, trying to play it cool despite her nerves.
Scott exchanges a look with Blythe, both of them clearly not pleased to find their daughter was sneaking out into the woods to follow them. "What are you doing here, Alissa?" Scott asked, trying to keep his voice calm.
"Um...Just hiking...Enjoying nature." She replied, shrugging her shoulders nonchalantly. She gave him a bright smile, hoping her parents would buy her lie.
Scott shares skeptical glance with his wife before looking back at their daughter. He raises an eyebrow, clearly not believing her. "You hate hiking."
"I know, but I wanted to try something new," Alissa said, trying to sound as innocent as possible. "You guys know I'm always up for an adventure."
"By yourself?" Blythe crosses her arms, giving her daughter a pointed look. "Not with your friends? Who I'm assuming are here too."
"I know for a fact they are." Isaac chimes in with a heavy sigh, stepping over to the tree and reaching over to grab his daughter's arm to pull her out from behind the tree. Imara cringes as she was pulled out from behind the tree by her dad. "Imara, you're supposed to be grounded. Being grounded doesn't mean you can leave the house." Imara smiled apologetically at him and her mom, knowing she was busted.
Eli and Luke exchanges a glance, realizing they had been discovered as well. Especially when Eli is suddenly pulled out from behind the tree by Scott. "Luke, we know you're there too." Lydia called out to her son, stepping out from hiding behind Malia and sending a disapproving look to Luke.
Luke reluctantly steps out from his hiding spot, chewing on his last gummy worm. "Yeah, here I am. Hey, mom." He muttered, trying to look nonchalant despite the situation.
Lydia sighs, shaking her head at her son's attempt to play it cool. "Don't 'hey, mom' me, young man. You know you're not supposed to be out here."
Luke shrugs, grinning sheepishly. "Yeah, but it's not like we were doing anything bad. Just, you know, following you guys to see what you're up to."
"Wow, you've gotten really big." Scott murmured, looking at Eli with surprise. He hadn't seen the boy in a long time. He and his family had recently moved back to Beacon Hills, they had to move because of his job, but Alissa and Blythe convinced him to move back. They both missed their home town and honestly while Scott didn't miss it as much as they did, he did miss it a little and he missed his friends and family. So they decided to move back. But he still hadn't seen Eli yet until then. The last time he saw Eli was when he was young.
Eli shrugs. "Yeah, it's probably because I was only three the last time you saw me."
"What are you kids doing out here?" Scott questioned.
"We were kinda wondering what you guys were doing out here." Eli admitted sheepishly.
"Hiking." Malia responds. "Can't you tell? It's a really nice night for hiking." She shrugged, gesturing around the area.
"Hey, I already used that excuse." Alissa huffs, crossing her arms. She was clearly not happy about Malia using her excuse. "And besides, we can clearly tell you guys are lying." She narrows her eyes, calling their bluff. "Did you forget all of us, except Luke, has enhanced senses?" She pointed out, referring to herself, Eli, and Imara.
"Which sucks 'cause I feel so left out with that." Luke complained, earning an annoyed eye roll from Alissa.
"So you're not going to fool us that easily." Alissa continues. "We know there's something going on, so why don't you just tell us?" She crossed her arms defiantly, her expression challenging. She didn't like being left in the dark about things and she knew she wasn't the only one. Plus she and her friends were curious, and if their parents weren't going to tell them the truth, then they were going to have to find out for themselves. They could always do that later when their parents weren't around, but now would be the easiest and quickest option.
"Well, this isn't any of your business, kids. You need to go home." Isaac told the group. He
Alissa, Imara, and Eli exchanged glances, their curiosity clearly piqued. Luke, despite his earlier annoyance, looked more intrigued now, munching on his last gummy worm with a thoughtful expression.
"Seriously?" Alissa raises an eyebrow, crossing her arms. "You think we're just going to go home without getting answers?"
Scott glances at the group of kids, clearly torn between wanting to keep them safe and the frustration of being followed. "It's not that we don't want to tell you," He said, trying to sound more reasonable, "But this situation is complicated and potentially dangerous. We need to handle it without any additional risks."
"And you think we're just going to sit at home while you guys handle whatever's going on? We have a right to know." Luke speaks up firmly. "I didn't just walk all the way out here to be sent home without answers. If there's something dangerous happening, we deserve to know, too. We're not kids anymore."
The adults exchange looks, their expressions a mix of concern and resignation. Scott and the others seemed to understand the determination in their children's eyes, knowing that they couldn't easily be sent away.
"You guys know how to find it?" Lydia chimed in, causing Imara's parents to share a look. They weren't happy at all their daughter had snuck out even when she was supposed to be grounded so the fact Lydia was asking them for help wasn't something they were fond of although they did need help to find it. They sent her a look to which she shrugged and sheepishly smiled back at them in response.
"Kind of. I sleepwalk." Eli confesses with a sheepish expression. "I don't know why. But I've just been doing it for the last few months."
"I used to wake up in the woods too." Scott admitted.
Eli nods, realizing what he was talking about. "After you were bit by Peter, right?"
"Yeah, your dad tell you a few stories?" Scott asked him with a small smile.
"Yeah, all of 'em." Eli chuckled.
"What about the tree?" Malia cut in, raising her eyebrows at Eli.
"It's not far from here." Eli admitted.
Malia grins. "I knew we were going the right way." Each of her friends knew that they weren't, but didn't say anything as they exchanged a look.
"No, you were going the wrong way." Eli tells Malia and then points in the other direction. "It's that way."
"We were circling back." Malia defensively replied.
"Hm." Lydia hummed in response, not believing her at all like the others.
"Were we?" Josie questions, raising her eyebrows and glancing at Malia with slight amusement once she shared a look with her husband. "That's news to us."
Malia rolls her eyes, scoffing. "I was trying to throw you guys off." She muttered, crossing her arms.
Blythe chuckles, shaking her head at Malia's attempt to cover up her mistake. "Nice try, Malia."
"Anyway, can we go see the nemeton? I want to see it." Luke excitedly asked, his eyes shining with excitement.
"No, Luke. You guys need to go home." Lydia replied immediately, looking at her son with a stern expression.
"Come on, mom. Can't we just see it? We're already out here. And we want to see it, please?" Luke pleads, putting on his best puppy dog eyes. "Dad would let me go with you guys." He grimaced at the look he received from Lydia. His dad had been a tough subject for awhile. Stiles was off dealing with being an FBI while Lydia had these dreams about losing her husband which made her even more worried about him and made her hate it even more that he was away so much. She loved him, but she didn't like that he was gone a lot and she especially hated how often she felt like she was going to lose him. So Luke didn't bring his dad up often. He didn't want to make his mom upset or feel bad.
Stiles always tried his best to stay in contact with his family and visit when he could, but it wasn't easy. It wasn't fair to his wife and his son, but it was what it was. He didn't love being away from his family (and friends), actually, he hated it, but he had a job to do. And he loves his job, he really does, but it didn't come without sacrifices. Sacrifices like his family's time together. Lydia's face softened slightly at the mention of Stiles, but she still hesitated, clearly torn between her protective instincts and her son's earnest request.
"Yeah, are you guys really gonna make us go home after coming this far?" Alissa tried, hoping to convince their parents to let them stay.
"This one is supposed to be grounded." Isaac points out, giving his daughter a stern look and earning a sheepish, apologetic look from her. "And I'm sure you are too." He added, giving the same look to Eli.
"I, uh, I snuck out before my dad could." He explains, scratching the back of his neck nervously. "And technically, I'm not grounded."
"So, can we stay? Pretty please?" Imara begged, giving her parents the best puppy dog eyes she could muster. She looked at her parents with a hopeful expression, her heart racing as she awaited their response.
Josie shares a look with her husband, weighing their options. It was clear that they were both torn between keeping the kids safe and letting them have an experience that, while risky, was also important to them. The couple shared a look with their friends, their eyes asking the unspoken question. They all sighed in defeat, exchanging a knowing look. They couldn't fight their children's stubbornness and they were already there anyway, so why not? Maybe, just maybe, they would be able to help out. But it was definitely risky. But their kids weren't completely powerless and they had grown up with the supernatural. Heck, they were all some kind of supernatural creature too, so it wasn't like they were completely helpless either. So, despite their reluctance, they decided to give in, knowing it might be more beneficial to have them involved rather than trying to keep them away from something they were clearly interested in.
"Fine." Isaac finally relents, earning a cheer from his daughter and Eli as they both high five each other. "But you four have to stay close to us. We're not letting you wander off by yourselves." The other adults nodded, all agreeing to Isaac's condition.
"Deal." The kids agree, all looking curious and excited.
"Wait, where's Malia?" Alissa's sudden question gained everyone's attention and they look around for the werecoyote to find out that Malia was already heading in the direction Eli had pointed out. So was some of the adults. So they all quickly head after them to catch up and walk with them.
"There it is!" Malia announces, picking up her place to get closer to the tree stump in the middle of the clearing. "So, what should we go about Argent?"
"Uh, I mean, I'm never gonna get a signal now." Scott admits. "Even if he's texting me, I wouldn't know."
"Well, we're going to have to do this now." Lydia said urgently. "We can't wait for him."
"It's his daughter." Scott argued.
"You said it had to be tonight." Lydia pointed out.
Josie nods in agreement. "Yeah, tonight is probably our best chance too."
Lydia sends her a thankful look for backing her up. "Exactly. He would want us to do this without him."
Imara couldn't believe what she was hearing. It sounded like they were trying to bring back Allison, but why? And how? Was it possible? She thought to herself. She didn't understand any of it and it was frustrating. After glancing at her friends, she could tell they were feeling the same way.
"Are they seriously talking about resurrecting someone?" Luke murmured to his friends. "Like, how the h*** is that possible?"
"Don't you kids have somewhere to be?" Malia inquired, glancing back at the four teens with a raised eyebrow.
"Yeah, yeah. We have a lacrosse game to play. Well, more like a lacrosse game to show up to since I, like, I never get to play." Eli rambled, earning a nod from Luke.
"Been there, done that." Stiles remarked, nodding while he pursed his lips, remembering when he was in high school and was in the same position as Eli. Scott had glanced at him with slight amusement while Lydia nodded in understanding, not looking surprised. Josie and Blythe shared a look of amusement while Isaac shook his head in amusement, a small smile on his face.
"Oh! You want us to leave?" Eli realized after seeing the look Malia was giving him. "Okay, uh, I got it. Okay, well, I'll tell my dad that I saw you guys?"
"No, don't." Scott quickly replies. "Don't tell him anything. This is kind of-"
"Personal." Lydia interrupted and Scott nodded in agreement along with the other adults.
"Alright, don't worry. I won't say anything." Eli promised.
"Wait, why do we have to leave?" Imara chimes in, wanting to stay to find out what they were doing and how and why Allison was being brought back to life. "Why are you bringing Allison back from the dead? Why does it have to be tonight? Why can't we help?"
"You guys have a lacrosse game to get to." Josie tells her daughter. "Speaking of which, we probably need to get going." She glances at her watch she wore, checking the time. "We need to hurry and get ready."
Imara groans in frustration. "But, mom, come on, we want to stay and help!"
"They'll be fine, alright? We have a lacrosse game to worry about." Blythe spoke up after sharing a look with her husband and stepping forward to wrap her arm around Alissa's shoulders, pulling her daughter into her side.
"We'll be fine." Scott reassures the teens, giving them a small smile. "Just focus on your game, okay? You don't need to worry about this."
"But-" Imara started to protest.
"No." Her parents firmly responded, stopping her protests.
"Fine." Imara pouted, turning to leave with Eli following closely behind. Luke hesitated, but after getting a look from Stiles and Lydia, he was quick to follow his friends.
"I'll take the kids to the game." Blythe offered, reassuring her friends.
"I'll go with you." Josie offered, earning a smile from her.
Stiles nods in agreement. "Same here. I can't believe I have a son who's actually good at lacrosse."
"He clearly didn't get those skills from you." Lydia comments, chuckling a little along with the others. When Stiles looked upset and offended, she wraps her arm around his waist and leans over to kiss his cheek. "Sorry, honey. I love you."
He grumbles, but still wraps his arm around her waist in return. "I love you too. Alright, keep us updated." He told his wife and friends before he followed the teens, Josie, and Blythe out of the woods, leaving Scott, Isaac, Lydia, and Malia behind.
