Chapter 5
Bobbi refused to open her eyes. She drifted towards the land of wakefulness a nice 8 hours after laying her head down on her massive pillow. But her body was begging her to stay put.
She could hear movement outside her room when the first peaks of sunlight started to shine around the edges of the dark curtains covering the large glass windows. She heard people start moving out in the common room beyond her door, the sounds of early morning. She definitely heard Rosie lift herself out of the bed next to her own when the scent of coffee started wafting its way through the crack under the door.
Rosie thudded across the room, yawning extremely loud. Somehow she managed to barely open the door and let in the minimal amount of light so as to not bother Bobbi.
Bobbi kept her eyes closed and her head snuggled into the deep plush blankets, relishing in the fact that she didn't really have anywhere to be just yet and she could indeed lie there for awhile. She knew Alfie would demand she get up eventually. They still had work today but at least for a little while she could revel in the luxury of sleeping in.
The main hotel door opened and then slammed shut. Bobbi could hear Alex's powerful voice sound off, surely awakening all occupants of the common room. She asked a question but seemed to be met with silence as Bobbi heard no response through her half dazed state.
Bobbi's suspicion of what the question was was affirmed when she could hear Alex's strong stride cross the common room and head for the set of rooms opposite Bobbi's own. There was a pounding on the door and then a low gruff reply when the door was opened.
During a quick exchange of words between the deep voice, Alex's strong demands and Alfie's fatherly tone, Bobbi heard all three sets of treads head towards her room. She gripped the blankets tighter and burrowed herself deeper into her bed as she sensed what was coming. But it was more soothing than she anticipated. She did not have Alex storming into her room, throwing back the curtains and shocking her retinas awake.
Instead the door to her room was opened quietly and slowly, the last few words of the conversation floating in as the new comer immediately lowered his voice.
"Just let me wake her up. We don't have anywhere to be just yet. Can we just act like its actually Sunday just once?"
His words were met with mumbles of consent and the door was then shut softly.
Bobbi groaned as the curtains were slowly pulled back and the mid-morning sun shone in all its brilliance into her hotel room. She tried pulling the covers up over her head higher but it seemed she was the deepest she could go.
She heard slow footsteps round her queen size bed and felt a dip in the mattress to her right. After a few moments of no movement, only the sound of slow and rhythmic breathing, Bobbi poked her head up over her covers and glanced over at Theo's figure passed out next to her.
With one of the many pillows tucked underneath him, he had laid his head back down and closed his eyes. Bobbi tried to stifle a laugh and turned onto her side to face him. She gently poked his arm.
"Hmmm." He hummed in reply.
"I thought you were suppose to wake me up." Bobbi said.
"You're awake. I've done my job. Now let me sleep."
His words came out muddled as his face was partially squished into the large feather pillow.
"We really probably get up." Bobbi said again, her voice low so as not to disturb the quiet atmosphere around them.
She rested her hands underneath her head and stared at Theo as he remained motionless. She was content to stay there all day but she could hear the rumblings of life happening outside her door and knew they couldn't.
She poked him again.
"Teddy. We gotta get up."
"I already got out of bed. That's more than I can say about you."
"Yeah, getting up from your bed, putting on a shirt just to walk across and pass out on my bed isn't what Alex meant when she said to was time to wake up."
Theo groaned and turned over to lay on his back. He lifted his left arm and Bobbi scooted closer to lay her head on his chest. He dropped his arm down around her shoulders and the quiet returned.
Neither of them spoke for several moments. Theo was the first to talk but spoke in a low tone, with his eyes still shut.
"How did it go last night with Aaron?" He asked.
"Fine." Bobbi replied.
"Yeah."
"Yeah. He got the message that I was not to be touched pretty quickly, so that helped."
"Yeah. I didn't have to beat him up."
Bobbi laughed softly. He smiled in reply. After a few quiet moments she spoke again.
"How did it go with that new girl of yours? What's her name again?"
"Daisy."
"Right. Daisy."
Bobbi paused a moment before continuing, hoping her words sounded calm and collected.
"Seemed a bit overenthusiastic."
"Yeah. Just a bit."
"Bit of a hands-on sort of person."
"Unfortunately so."
"She seemed to like you very much."
"Most of them do."
"I don't remember any of the others being so handsy."
"How many times did she touch me?"
Bobbi scoffed.
"What? I don't know. How would I know?"
Theo laughed, the chuckled resounding deep through his chest.
"Come on, Bird. You keep your eye on me just as much as I keep my eye on you. How many times did she try to touch me?"
His eyes remained closed but his mouth was smiling.
"52." Bobbi replied in a small voice.
Theo laughed, then said, "She's definitely seemed determined to get what she wanted."
"Are you gonna see her again?" Bobbi asked.
"Nah. I didn't really like hanging out with her that much and there were enough photos posted of the two of us together at the party last night to set the rumor mill buzzing."
"Justine already leak the rundown of her major Hollywood party to the tabloids?"
"Yup." Theo said. "Pictures and all. If people didn't think you were dating Aaron and that I'm still a playboy, they will now."
"That should keep management happy for awhile."
"One only hopes."
Theo sighed and wrapped his arm tighter around Bobbi as they settled back into silence. The noise from the common room seemed to have died too. But just as Bobbi could feel herself settle back into a daze, Alfie pounded on her door and called out to them.
"Get up. We've still got work today. Breakfast is getting cold."
Bobbi groaned as she felt Theo start to move.
"I don't want to get up."
"I know, Bird. But he's right. We've got soundcheck in a few hours. Come on."
"But the taping's not until tonight." Bobbi whined.
Theo sat up and started to pull her up with him.
"Yes. But we've still got to get to the studio on time. Its for Jamie, remember? Now go shower. Alex brought over a change of clothes." Theo said, standing up.
Bobbi groaned again and let herself get pulled out of bed.
"If it was anyone else, I would say screw it." She grumbled. "Damn Jamie."
*********
After a quick shower, Bobbi was met with a large plate of food and a cup of coffee set out on the table for her when she entered the common room. Theo was standing up just as she was walking in. He gave her a quick peck before he left to go get ready himself.
With lots of threats and aggressive motivation, Alex had the group of six congregated in front of the door and ready to head out within half an hour.
Sam lead the group and Rosie trudged up the rear, the last one out of the hotel room in the same clothes she had worn the night before. They were hurried from the lobby, through the mass of fans and cameramen waiting for them out front and into the back of their awaiting car. Frank barely waited for the hotel security to close the doors before hitting the gas and pulling the car back into traffic.
After a quick trip through the heart of downtown LA, Frank dropped everyone off at the one of the back doors of the television studio. He had changed drop off locations last minute when he spotted the large mass of people waiting outside the front trying to get in.
Apparently it was no secret that The Wild Wallflowers would be guests on the Late Time Show. The line of fans wrapped around the large white building and all four band members shifted to catch sight of the crowd.
Luckily Frank maneuvered the car around towards the back of the building before any fans caught sight of them. Must likely, if they had been seen, the fans would have proceeded to chase after them. It wouldn't have been the first time it had happened.
Barely inside, Bobbi and the boys were ushered out onto the stage where they would be performing. The studio where the show was taped was nearly empty, filled with only a few crew men setting up cameras and various equipment through out the large room. All their instruments where already set up and ready to go when they got there and Alex had them running through the song in no time.
It felt strange to be singing out into an empty audience, the empty rows of stadium seats rising out to the back wall. Bobbi didn't realize how much she had become used to singing in front of massive crowds, all singing back at you, in large arenas, in low lighting. As the first performance since the end of tour, the bright overhead lights and half empty studio felt strange.
Rosie was their only audience member, as she sat in one of the front rows nearest the stage watching the rehearsal. After their third run through, the house band had taken their place at the bandstand to the right of the stage and even applauded as Bobbi hit her last note and Theo finished out the song with one last guitar chord. Bobbi gave a small bow and waved at the familiar faces. But Alex caught her arm and dragged her away back before she got the chance to go over and say hi.
As she was lead back stage, she saw Rosie chatting it up with the band leader, a guitar already in her hand.
Bobbi shook her head and laughed slightly as she followed Alex through the maze of hallways.
"What is it?" Theo asked, looking down at her as he walked beside her.
"Rosie's already joined the house band." Bobbi said.
"It was only a matter of time." Alfie put in, walking just behind them. "If there's a guitar in the room, you can guarantee Rosie's gonna get her hands on it."
"And she's know not to touch mine." Theo added.
Alex lead them to a small patio outside with a white canopy set up. Underneath, there was a long table set up of food and she sternly demanded that they all eat up and quickly. They only had 15 minutes before they were needed in wardrobe.
They all found a spot at a nearby empty table but were soon joined by the show's producer and some of the technicians they had worked with before.
Bobbi and Theo sat together and she even ate off his plate when he saw that she had run out of food. The rest of the crew eating around them looked on and it seemed none of their dinner companions even noticed how the two of them acted around each other.
Alex was true to her words and exactly 15 minutes later she was dragging Bobbi back through the maze of hallways. They passed by the stage and Bobbi could hear excited murmurs starting to fill the air as the audience was being seated.
Their stylist met them in the dressing room and had their clothes for the show all ready for them. Bobbi was encouraged to dress quickly as they still had makeup to do. She didn't even have her black Oxford shoes on when she was sat down in front of a lit up mirror and the makeup artist started in on her eyeliner.
The boys spent a grand total of five minutes in the makeup chairs after getting dressed and they were set loose just as Bobbi was settling in.
She was left alone in the dressing room with just the makeup artist while Alex and the band stylist stood talking over details just outside in the hallway.
Theo reappeared at the doorway only a few moments after he had left the room with Alfie and Sam. He had two water bottles in hand and two sets of in-ears hanging round his neck. Bobbi gave him a small smile through the reflection in the mirror but didn't dare move her head too much in case of risking making her makeup take longer. Theo gave her a nod and took out his phone, leaning against the doorframe.
The makeup artist paused for a moment when she saw Theo waiting but then returned to the job at hand without making any sort of comment.
"Where are Alfie and Sam?" Bobbi asked, after the three of them occupied the room in complete silence for a solid ten minutes.
Theo stowed away his phone in his back pocket and looked up when she spoke, crossing his arms over his chest.
"It's taking tech a bit longer to get ready to tape so someone is letting Alfie and Sam do an audience Q&A."
At that moment, a wave of screams and cries crashed through the hallways and into the dressing room. Theo leaned back into the hallway to glance in the direction of the stage.
"I'm guessing they just started." He said.
"A Q&A? Are you serious?"
Bobbi risked turning her head to look towards him. Then looked past him at Alex.
"Alex, can I be done yet? This is enough eye makeup, isn't it?"
Alex turned her attention from her conversation and walked back into the room. She gave Bobbi a once over.
"That looks good enough." She said, nodding. She spoke to the makeup artist. "Go ahead and finish up."
She nodded in reply and made a few finishing touches before setting Bobbi free. Bobbi barely grabbed her shoes from the floor beside her chair before she was out into the hallway and racing towards the stage.
"Hold up!" Theo called behind her, racing to catch up.
"Hurry up! We're gonna miss it!"
Bobbi reached the curtain that led out to the stage and paused. Theo came and stood next to her, looking around for the stage manager.
Bobbi grabbed onto his arm to steady herself as she slipped her shoes on. When she straightened back up, Theo had two mics in hand and was handing one out to her.
"Here ya go." He said, smiling down at her.
"Thanks, babe." She said, returning the expression.
She turned and started out towards the stage where she could hear Alfie and Sam talking to the audience.
"Thank you, Sam." Alfie said into his mic, turning away from Sam and back towards the crowd. "And that's how you make the perfect creme brûlée. Excellent question. Who's next?"
As the audience noticed Bobbi and Theo step out from behind the black curtain and walk up to stand next to Alfie and Sam, the screams started up again.
"Hi everybody!" Bobbi said into her mic.
The seats were now full to bursting and Bobbi felt more comfortable with the lights down low and the studio ready to go.
"Hello!" Theo said, waving out to the crowd.
"Well, look who decided to show up!" Alfie said, turning towards the newcomers.
"I was getting ready. Its not my fault." Bobbi said.
"There's always an excuse with you, I swear." Alfie said, his voice taking on a mock fatherly tone.
Bobbi nudged him in the shoulder to switch he replied by breaking out into a snicker.
"Alright. This is a Q&A, isn't it?" Bobbi asked the crowd.
"Let's ask some questions. Who's got a question?"
"Excuse me," Alfie said, stepping in front of her, taking lead of the proceedings, "But I'll be running this affair. I am the oldest, after all. Okay so who's got a question?"
Bobbi could hear Sam and Theo laughing behind her and she turned to smile back at them. Alfie pinched her arm to draw her attention back to the crowd.
"What?" She asked.
Alfie shook his head reprovingly at her but then repeated the question.
And for the next fifteen minutes, question after question was sent their way. They divided the answers equally between the four of them, often looking to one another for the correct answer.
Most questions sent them into some sort of anecdote from tour or inside joke. The mood between the four of them standing before the large studio audience was incredibly relaxed. It had always been. They were all their best selves when they stood together in front of an audience doing what they loved.
The audience had great questions to ask. Most questions had to do with the album and some aspect of their music. Alfie made sure to ignore Rosie every time she rose her hand from the bandstand to ask a question. This didn't keep her from yelling out questions anyways.
Only towards the end of the segment did the questions turn towards Bobbi and Theo respectively.
"Okay. You. The young girl in the jean jacket. What's your question?" Alfie asked.
The girl he pointed to took the mic from the usher as she stood.
"This one's for Bobbi and Theo." She asked.
Her voice shook slightly and Bobbi could see her hands shaking a bit. Bobbi sent her the sweetest smile she could, her mic posed ready to answer the question she knew was coming.
"What is it?" Bobbi asked.
"I wanted to know whether or not you two would ever date? Or if you have ever considered dating? I just think you guys are so cute together."
Bobbi turned towards Theo and sent him a wink, his mouth already turned up in a smirk.
"What do you think, Theo? Think we'll ever date?" She asked.
"I don't know, Bobbi. That is a good question. You know, a lot of people think we already are dating." Theo answered.
"Really?" Bobbi said, her voice thick with mock surprise.
"Yeah. Some people genuinely think we're in a relationship."
"Interesting."
"Yeah." Theo said.
"You know I would be so curious to know how people figure these things out."
"Yeah. Me too. Like, how do these rumors start?" Theo said.
"Okay, you two. That's enough." Alfie said, cutting them off.
Bobbi and Theo both had to take a moment to collect themselves as they were nearly bursting with laughter. Their answers became more ridiculous every single time they answered those type of questions and they played it up every time, making sure to never confirm or deny their relationship.
"Do you have anymore questions for us?" Alfie asked the same girl.
"Uh, yeah. I have another one for Bobbi." She replied.
"What's up?" Bobbi asked.
"Who do you love most out of the three boys?" She asked.
"Hmm. That's a great question."
She took a step back and glanced between her three companions. She pretended to look deep in thought for a moment before answering.
"You know, I would have to say that I love each of them equally and in a different way."
"So you don't have one of us that stands out among the rest?" Theo asked into his mic, his mouth set in a smirk and his eyes bright.
"Okay, any more questions?" Alfie said, cutting off Bobbi's answer.
Both of them laughed as Alfie moved the conversation along.
Just as he was gesturing to another audience member for the next question, a voice in a light British accent rang out from their left.
"Alright. Who gave Alfie a mic and let him talk to the audience?"
A man in a neatly tailored suit and short blonde hair appeared from the back of the auditorium and made his way towards the band. He was shaking his head and smiling, almost laughing by the time he made it to the stage.
"Jamie!" Alfie cried out.
The four of them raced up and crowded around the newcomer.
"Hello, kids. Causing trouble in my studio, I see?" He asked.
He shook hands with all the boys and leaned in to give Bobbi a peck on each cheek.
"Hi, darling. How are you?" He asked her.
"Good to see you, Jamie." She replied.
"Now, I'm serious. Who let you run an audience Q&A?" Jamie asked, turning back to Alfie.
"I don't know. I just found a mic and brought Sam along with me to talk to my adorable fans." Alfie said, shrugging.
"You can't just do that, Alfred." Jamie said.
"Well, excuse me, James. But I didn't want them getting bored. Turns out I'm quite good at this hosting thing. I even kept Sam from rambling on too long about the psychology of monkeys. And I even kept Bobbi and Theo in line. If you ever need a day off, man. Just call." Alfie said.
"Nope. No way." Jamie said, shaking his head.
He took the mics from all of them and handed them to a crew member.
"This is my show. Not yours. And I do believe you need to go perform now. We're ready for you guys. So if you could just take your places that would be great."
"Fine." Alfie sighed and made his way towards his mic stand, his bass waiting for him.
Sam, Bobbi and Theo followed and headed towards their setup after sending one last wave out to the audience.
"Here. Drink up." Theo passed Bobbi one of the water bottles he had been holding as they headed towards the stage.
With a quick thanks, she downed half of it and set it off to the side to finish after they were performed.
She kept her back to the audience and closed her eyes, shaking out her hands and her neck to loosen up. She was humming slightly to warm up her vocal chords when she could sense the boys move towards her.
Alfie had his strap slung around his neck, his bass resting against his back. Theo had his guitar in the same position and Sam had his hand wrapped tightly around his drum sticks.
Alfie and Theo laid their arms on top of Bobbi's shoulders and she did the same to them, Sam standing opposite. As they stood in their pre-show huddle, the lights in the auditorium started to dim.
"Alright." Alfie said, reeling off his usual pre-show pep talk.
"Wild Wallflowers. Only You. The Late Time show with Jamie Cooper. Let's go!" Alfie exclaimed.
They immediately dispersed and everyone moved to their places.
Theo called out to Bobbi before she headed for the mic stand set in front. She turned back and he took the few steps towards her, her in-ears in hand.
"Here."
As was ritual, he stood in front of her and helped set them in. Immediately she could hear the sound Alfie's bass as he warmed up.
"Thanks." She said, smiling up at him.
He quickly pressed a kiss to her forehead, the stage atmosphere surrounding them a safe pitch black.
Bobbi turned and stepped up to her mic, her eyes closed across the view of the awaiting crowd. She could hear yells and hollers as the final prep was completed to start taping.
Through her closed lids, she sensed a single spotlight shining down in front of her and to the left.
A whisper came through her in-ears as they had yet to turn on their mics for the sound system.
"Love you, Bird." Theo's voice rang through her head. His words made her smile and as she leaned in to reply, she broke out laughing when Alfie spoke first.
"Love you too, Theo."
Bobbi quickly had to compose her self as she heard the producer call, 'Action."
"Love you too." She whispered back.
"Ladies and gentleman," Jamie called out, "We have a very special guest for you tonight. Back for the first time since their television debut only two years ago, here to perform their Grammy-winning song, Only You, please welcome, The Wild Wallflowers!"
The crowd erupted into cheers as Sam counted out four beats and Alfie yelled out "Let's go!"
Bobbi opened her eyes as the stage lights lit up around her, her body filling up with the energy from the crowd. She lips spread into a smile as she opened her mouth to sing.
*********
What else could I do?
But fall in love
Baby there's no one else
It's only you
The audience was on its feet as Bobbi hit the last note and Theo finished on the final chord. Bobbi stepped back from the mic to catch her breath, her smile wide as the cheers filled the air.
"The Wild Wallflowers, everybody!" Jamie said, stepping out in front of the band, speaking towards the cameras.
The boys set aside their instruments and joined Bobbi at the front of the stage, all bowing slightly.
"Stick around! We'll be right back!" Jamie called out.
And with that, the stage lights went out and the house lights came on. Bobbi had her water bottle in her hand within a minute and barely realized Theo had handed it to her while Jamie was chatting with them excitedly, praising their performance.
"Here. Drink up." Theo murmured, sipping from his own bottle.
Bobbi finished her water bottle and tried to go find another one as Jamie started to lead them to the edge of the second half of the stage. He left them standing by a bar set out and hopped up on stage as the crew finished prepping for the interview segment.
Bobbi glanced around to try and spot an intern or someone to get her a bottle of water. She spotted a few set on the back wall behind the bar and started off in that direction. She waved to a few fans sitting in the first few rows and grabbed two water bottles before heading back to where the boys were lined up. She head to the front of the procession to hand Theo one of the water bottles.
"Thanks, babe." He said quietly, taking the water bottle.
The makeup artist appeared suddenly at their side. After making sure Bobbi looked camera ready after her performance, she quickly moved on to the boys. Sam and Theo took it jut fine but Alfie started to protest when she came at him with a make up brush.
"I look fine. I don't want to wear makeup." He protested.
"Alfie, we do this every time." Bobbi said.
"Seriously, dude. Its not that big of a deal. We're on soon anyways." Theo said, gesturing up to the stage.
Alfie groaned and stepped back towards the makeup artist, letting her do her job.
On stage, Jamie had his cue cards in hand and was adjusting his suit to make sure it looked good as the crew took their places behind the cameras and the producer called for silence in the studio.
The house lights went down and the stage lights came on again, lighting up the desk and guest couch situated behind where Jamie was now standing.
Theo gestured for Bobbi's water bottle and she passed it to him. He set it down at the bar and turned back to stand at the head of their procession.
The camera's started to roll and Jamie's face lit up in his best and brightest smile.
"Welcome back, ladies and gentleman. We have some very special guests on the show tonight. These kids are dear friends of mine and I am thrilled to have them back. They are just returning from their first world tour and are currently celebrating a recent Grammy win. Both of their albums have gone multi-platinum and they're just so freaking cool. Please help me welcome to the couch, The Wild Wallflowers!"
Jamie tucked his cards under his arm and started clapping as the audience joined in.
The band saw their cue and started up the steps towards their host.
Theo led the pack, pausing to shake Jamie's hand before heading for the furtherest end of the couch. Sam and Alfie followed behind, mimicking Theo's greeting before taking their spots beside him.
Bobbi brought up the rear of the group. She paused when she reached Jamie, giving him her biggest smile and a part of her heart warmed at his sweet expression looking back at her. She leaned in and gave him a huge hug, to which he replied with kissing her on both cheeks.
Jamie held on to her hand after she released him from her embrace and led her to the last spot on the couch nearest his seat.
She plopped down next to Alfie and turned to face Jamie as he took his spot in his chair.
"Hi, guys!" He finally said, after the round of applause started to die down and everyone was settled.
"Hey!" The four of them replied in almost perfect unison.
"It's so great to see you guys!" Jamie said.
"Thanks for having us." Theo said.
"It's been too long." Jamie said.
"Seriously." Alfie said.
"We've missed you." Bobbi said.
"I've missed you guys too! You all look wonderful, of course. Always impeccably dressed." Jamie said.
"Well. That's only because our manager makes sure we do." Alfie said.
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure Alfie would have shown up in sweats if Alex didn't scare the crap out of him." Bobbi said, sending Jamie into a round of giggles.
"I believe you. I've met Alex and she's definitely not someone you want to mess with." Jamie said. "You are looking very lovely this evening, Bobbi."
"Thanks!" She said.
"Now, I feel like you've gotten smaller. How is that possible? Usually when I see you you're about my height and I always feel I'm in the presence of an Amazonian goddess." Jamie said.
Bobbi leaned forward to laugh and saw Theo smirking out of the corner of her eye, nodding along with Jamie's words.
"Well, usually we end up running into each other at award shows." Bobbi said. "I always have to wear heels to those things. But I always wear sneakers or flats of some kind when I perform. Have to."
"Really?" Jamie asked. "And why's that?"
"The boys won't let me wear heels on stage." Bobbi said.
She turned to face the others and saw them all nodding in agreement.
"Really?" Jamie asked, incredulous.
"Yeah. It's one of the rules of the band. Bob's not allowed to wear heels on stage." Alfie said.
"Yeah, we're all a bit too terrified that she's gonna fall and break a wing or something." Theo said.
"And you just go along with this?" Jamie asked Bobbi.
She turned back to face him.
"Yeah. I mean, its fine." She said, shrugging. "There was this one time we were playing a festival in Austin early on and I thought it would be a fun idea to wear boots on stage. I swear they had the smallest of heels. But when I came out to go on stage, they made me go back and change into chucks. We were late for our call time."
"Let's be honest, Bob." Alfie cut in. "You're not all that graceful and we can't have you breaking your neck while you're jumping around on stage."
Bobbi turned and saw both Sam and Theo nodding in agreement. She laughed at the sight as they both look deadly serious about the whole manner. Theo's frown broke into a smile when they made eye contact and he sent her a quick wink.
"So what other rules do you guys have as a band?" Jamie asked.
Alfie took a deep breath, signaling that he would be taking this one.
"Well, each of us have different rules and guidelines that we need to stick by. But as a band, we don't really have that many. It's mainly don't let Bobbi wear heels while performing and don't piss off Alex."
Bobbi, Sam and Theo all nodded along in agreement.
"There's also a rule that says Alfie's not allowed to try to play the drums." Bobbi said, turning back towards Jamie.
Jamie laughed slightly as he spoke.
"Really?"
"Yup. Sam's tried to teach him a few times and every time he's just gotten extremely frustrated." Theo said. "After the third attempt we made it an official band rule that Alfie wasn't allowed to play the drums."
"Any other rules you've got, as a band?" Jamie asked, leaning back in his seat.
"The biggest one I would have to say in that none of us are allowed to go to bed angry with any one else in the band." Theo said.
"Yeah," Bobbi said. "If any one of us is mad at any one else, we stay up and make sure to work things out, to never let issues stay unresolved for too long. We're very open and honest as a band."
"You guys sound like you're all married to each other." Jamie said.
Bobbi and Theo shrugged simultaneously.
"We kinda are." Sam said.
"I mean, we all live together. We spend all of our time together." Alfie said.
"Well I'm glad you guys have figured out how to make things work." Jamie said.
He flipped over the cards in his hand and quickly read his question, starting to speak before looking up.
"So how are you guys doing? How's life been?" He asked.
"I know you guys just got off a big world tour. And you just won a Grammy last week."
Everyone nodded and hummed responses in the affirmative.
"This is your second?" He asked.
"Yup." Bobbi said.
"And you got your first one last year for best new artist, correct?" Jamie asked.
"Yeah, well, we're still not sure whether or not that one's real." Alfie said.
"What? What do you mean?" Jamie asked, laughing.
"We're still a bit convinced the whole thing was a fluke." Alfie said. "Like the Recording Academy's gonna call us up any minute and tell us to ship the golden record player back."
"We're still pretty convinced that the whole thing was a huge joke." Bobbi said.
"Yeah. Seriously." Theo said. "When we set out to make our second album, we wanted to make sure that if we did win again, we'd feel like we deserved it. Not like we were just some kids who were being mistaken for serious artists."
"That makes sense." Jamie said. "And you were just up for Album of the Year as well as Record of the Year, right?"
"Yeah." Bobbi said.
"But we were up against Hey Farewell and Reeve Keller, so we knew there was no way we were gonna win that one." Alfie said.
Jamie shrugged and nodded in agreement. "That's a wise decision."
He cleared his throat and paused before turning and facing Bobbi directly. Bobbi saw his smile falter a bit and squared her shoulders at what she knew was coming.
He sent her a sympathetic smile before he spoke and she saw his eyes flick down at Theo as he read out his question. But his eyes were back on her and focused by the end of the question.
"Now, Bobbi. You had a date with you the other week to the Grammy's. Who's this new guy?" He asked.
Bobbi smiled at him, hoping he read the understanding she was sending his way. The questions about Aaron were inevitable. Most of the time they were actually planned.
"Aaron Porter. He's a model, I believe." She said.
"You sound a bit unsure." Jamie said, laughing lightly.
"I'm pretty sure that's what he does. I've only hung out with him a few times." Bobbi said, shrugging.
"He's a very handsome fellow." Jamie said.
"A lot of people seem to think so, yeah." Bobbi said, nodding along, making sure to keep an even smile.
Jamie paused for a moment and looked between her and Theo. His lips were pressed together and his eyes were shining. After a quick moment he burst out laughing and everyone on the couch chuckled along with him.
"Alright, look, I know you guys hate these questions. You never give me or anyone else a straight answer anyways. So let's just get these over with and we can get to talking about the new album. Relationship questions, lighting round, Bobbi and Theo. What do you guys say?"
Bobbi leaned forward a bit to look over at Theo. She found him already leaning forward and glancing her way. He nodded his approval and shrugged. Bobbi turned back to Jamie.
"Let's do this." She said.
Jamie sat up in his seat, almost on the edge, his cards ready. His face went serious and his voice became fast and hurried, as if he was hosting a high-stakes game show. Bobbi laughed at his expression but quickly set her face as he asked his first question.
"Alright, Bobbi. You first. Where did you meet this Aaron fellow?" Jamie asked.
"At the music video shoot for our last single." Bobbi answered.
"How did you guys meet?"
"A mutual friend."
"Vague. I like it." Jamie said, nodding approvingly. He turned his gaze back to his questions.
"How long have you been seeing Aaron?"
"I think everyone has been seeing him since he was born. I would hope other people can see him and he's not just a figment of my imagination." Bobbi said.
Jamie winced. "A bit weak but I'll give it to you. Do you plan on going out with him again?"
"Yes." Bobbi said, nodding her head.
"A straight answer. Mixing it up, I see. Okay, last one and then on to Theo." Jamie said.
A single spotlight fell on the two of them and intense theme music played through the speakers as Jamie leaned closer.
"Do you see a future with this one or is he just another one of your boy toys?"
Bobbi set her face in a serious expression and took a deep breath before answering, her speech prepped and ready to go.
"I think the term 'boy-toy' is demeaning to men and I am against all hatred of any kind. People in this world, people in our society and people in the media in general tend to objectify each other and as a frequent victim of objectification and as a woman in general I do not tolerate such actions. Judge not, everyone. Love is the answer." Bobbi answered, her words growing in passion and volume as she concluded.
The lights returned to normal and Jamie fell back in his seat laughing, clapping at Bobbi's performance. Alfie, Sam and Theo joined in with the cheers from the crowd.
"Absolutely no answer to my question whatsoever and a rant on the state of our society! Brilliant! Bobbi King everyone!" Jamie exclaimed out to the audience.
She smiled and gave a small bow.
Jamie turned back to the couch and took a moment to catch his breath after laughing so hard.
"Brilliant." he murmured as he glanced over his next set of questions.
He glanced up and set his sights on Theo. He sent the rest of his relationship questions Theo's way. He was met with vague and non-committal answers following the same vein as Bobbi's. Jamie was laughing just as hard by the end of his interrogation when he turned out to the audience.
"There you have it, folks. Bobbi King and Theo Harris skillfully avoiding actually talking about their relationships in front of the public. This leaves us with only our speculation as they continue to single-handedly keep the tabloid industry in business."
The audience laughed and cheered as Jamie turned to the four of them on the couch again.
"Okay. Now that we've got all that mess out of the way, onto the stuff you guys actually want to talk about. You're just off a massive world tour. You just won your second Grammy for your second album. Your in LA for awhile. What have you guys got planned?"
"We're actually working on our next album." Alfie said.
"Really?" Jamie asked.
"Yeah. We've got a big compound we're staying at out in the desert with a recording studio on the property." Theo said.
"That sounds amazing. How much have you guys written? How soon will it be done?" Jamie asked.
Bobbi glanced over at the boys and all of them shot looks between each other. After hesitating, all trying to find the correct answer, Sam spoke.
"We have no clue."
"Yeah." Theo said. "We spent two weeks in Jamaica after we finished tour and we were suppose to write all of our material there."
"But..." Jamie prompted.
"It's Jamaica! How were we suppose to work with the beach literally right outside our door." Alfie said.
"Yeah. We haven't even started. We kinda took advantage of the vacation the label provided to unwind after tour and we got nothing done." Bobbi said.
"So you're behind." Jamie said.
"Not so much behind as we need to catch up." Alfie said. "We have a ton of stuff already written. At least most of it is mostly written."
"And we've got Rosie Mulligan staying with us, so she'll be helping out as well." Theo said.
"Rosie Mulligan? THE Rosie Mulligan?" Jamie asked.
He was leaning forward in his chair a bit, he's eyes wide.
"Yeah. She came to hang out one of the first days at our new place and she hasn't really left. She kinda commandeered our pool house. " Bobbi said.
"We're a bit worried she might be homeless, actually. She just won't leave!" Alfie said.
"Okay, Alfie's the only one who wants her to leave and that's only because she keeps eating his rice Chex." Bobbi said.
Jamie stared at them, his mouth slightly agape. He had to shake his head to regain his focus.
"I love how casually you're talking about this. You have Rosie Mulligan living in your pool house. THE Rosie Mulligan. The single most famous singer-songwriter of our time. The biggest female pop star, selling out major areas when it's just her and a guitar on stage. And you're telling me she's staying in your pool house?" Jamie said.
Bobbi and the boys nodded in a reply.
"I've been trying to get her on the show for years! She's impossible to reach. I don't even think she has a cellphone and her agent won't return my phone calls." Jamie said.
"Well, actually," Alfie said, "She's here."
Jamie's eyes somehow expanded further.
"What?"
He started glancing all over, his head turning side to side.
"Yeah. She wanted to tag along." Bobbi said. "She was even heckling us during the Q&A before the show. I believe she's over there with the rest of the house band."
Bobbi pointed past Jamie and towards the small stage set against the opposite wall.
Rosie sat on one of the stools with a guitar on her lap. She started laughing when Jamie turned quickly in his seat and spotted her.
"Hiya, James! How are you?" She asked, waving at him.
Jamie stammered for a moment but his host instincts caught up with him that he was quickly able to put sentences together.
"Rosie Mulligan! Are you serious?!"
He glanced back at Bobbi and the boys and they were all nodding along, laughing at his shocked expression.
"Rosie Mulligan, everybody!" He shouted out to his audience, gesturing to where she sat.
Rosie waved at the crowd as they clapped.
Jamie used the cheers from the audience as a distraction to gather his wits about him. Bobbi, Alfie, Sam and Theo were all leaning forward to catch the action. Jamie spoke once the cheers started to die down.
"Rosie! What are you doing here?"
"The kids were coming and I thought I'd tag along." Rosie said, shrugging. "Seemed like fun."
"What are yo doing with my band?" Jamie asked.
"They said I could chill here. I didn't want to sit in the audience and create a mob scene. I am the biggest female pop star after all, as you so graciously pointed out."
Rosie couldn't keep her face from smirking.
"You do know I've been trying to get you on my show for literally forever, right?" Jamie said.
"Does this count?" Rosie asked.
Jamie shook his head and turned to face the camera.
"I just can't believe this." He muttered. "Well, that's all we have for you tonight folks. Thanks for watching. This has been the Late Time show. I'm your host, Jamie Cooper. Thank you to my guests, The Wild Wallflowers, and, apparently, Rosie Mulligan. We'll see you next week!"
