Chapter Fourteen
We get out of the vehicle and head for the dorm's entrance. I'm focused on my phone though. I'm replaying the message. It came from the same private number.
"Have you figured out who I am yet? Of course you haven't, Princess. You know what? I'm making your prince scream. Not in THAT way though. I'm a boob-kinda guy after all. Surely you know that."
Scream?
Shivers dash through my body. What is this bastard doing to Hakkie?
Shinwon catches me and glimpses the message on my phone screen. "Wow. Jerk."
We halt at the door, Jinho knocking and Seungkwan belting out, "Sangyeon! Open up!"
"Seungkwan-hyung," Jongho sighs. "ATEEZ, Seventeen and Pentagon dorms can all hear you!"
Seconds later, the door opens.
A red-eyed man with light brown hair stands there.
"Yes?" he stammers out.
"Sangyeon? You look terrible." Jinho looks concerned.
"You know, don't you?" Sangyeon appears defeated. "About him?"
"Haknyeon?" I inquire. "Sadly, yes."
Sangyeon glances my way and sighs.
"It's okay. I mean, well, no, it's not okay, but -- I'll explain inside."
Sangyeon steps to the side and lets us into the ginormous one-floor, eleven-room structure. We all walk inside.
Shinwon and Jongho share awkward glances between themselves. If Jinho and Seungkwan are too, they don't show it. (I figure they're both social butterflies in K-Pop, so they shouldn't be awkward.)
Before long, we find ourselves standing inside of the dorm's foyer. It empties out into a long hallway down the center. To one side, a large living room sits. On the other is a dining and kitchen area.
"Welcome," Sangyeon says, sounding like a bored tour guide.
"You don't sound so good." The new voice belongs to Lee Juyeon, who comes up behind Sangyeon. "It's not your fault."
"As a leader though, he feels it is, Juyeon," Jinho says, sympathetically looking at Sangyeon.
"Let's sit down on the couch and chat," Jongho suggests, rubbing his arm. He is still feeling awkward.
Jinho and Seungkwan wrap comforting arms around Sangyeon and guide him into the dorm's living room, where most of The Boyz's members are already gathered and sitting on the couches and chairs.
"What are THEY doing here?" New pipes up.
"To help you," Seungkwan says. "That's my friend in distress."
Shinwon glances around himself, nervously. "Uh..." His eyes land on Eric's. "I'm Ko Shinwon." He smiles awkwardly and extends a hand out toward the maknae for The Boyz.
Eric, either ignorant to or oblivious to the awkwardness, smiles back sweetly and shakes his hand. "Hi, I'm Eric."
"Okay, what do we do about this?" Sangyeon asks, looking at me.
"Well," I say as I take a seat in a chair. "We need to eliminate all possibilities that aren't. Meaning, canceling out any enemies of his or The Boyz--"
"So, Hwall?" Juyeon inquires, cocking his head to one side.
"Hwall's busy. It ain't him," Hyunjae snaps. "I know it!"
"Why must we always go to a Hwall conclusion? It's not like we're on bad terms with him, just like Pentagon with E'Dawn," Sangyeon says, rubbing the bridge of his nose and shooting a glare at Juyeon.
Juyeon just shrugs.
"Any social media or family (extended works too)?" I follow up. "Maybe media or from Goedam filming? A Sasaeng giving him or you guys trouble, perhaps?"
"No. No. No. And no. The company would butt in then." This comes from New once again, who is studying his fingertips like a preppy teenage girl. "They're crazy protective about all that."
"What about on your end?" Jacob says, eyeing me. "You said Haknyeon's your ultimate bias and then some of your biases from groups got targeted...it for sure hints at someone on your end. But who?"
I stand my ground and stare back at him. "I'm not sure. It's no one I pissed off online, because I would know about that." I tap my chin in thought and get to my feet. I start to pace back and forth. "There's no jealous exes...or boyfriends...no angry fans that I know about... who? Who?"
Shinwon looks at me, studying my movements with curiosity and perplexment.
"Are you sure there's not someone you ran into somewhere? Maybe two people?" Seungkwan suggests, looking at me.
I barely register his words, but my mind is busy churning and thinking. This has to be someone who knows me and my favorite Idols. It also has to be someone who would be good with technology and love to brag to me. Someone dangerous. Or...maybe... it is possibly someones?
Two people, Seungkwan's words echo in my head.
Like a blinding flash of realization, my ah-ha moment happens. My eyes shoot wide as I think about multiple people.
Somewhere in my brain, I recall bumping into two young men in the library and one of them asking me about my taste in books. Then my mind quickly draws up their faces, connecting them to two men who went to the same school as me. One of them I know as Morden Maleficum, a mysterious and creepy guy and the other, who'd asked me about my book was, Devdan Vexx.
And the book I'd had was a James Patterson thriller named "The Coast-to-Coast Murders."
It has to be them.
"What are you realizing?" Jinho asks.
I spin to them. "I think I know who MIGHT be suspects. However, if it is them, we might be in for a dangerous and deadly game."
Sangyeon groans. "Not good...not good..."
"Poor Hakkie..." Eric whimpers and nuzzles against Shinwon's arm.
"Who are they?" Jongho presses, curiously. "I'd like to know who dared to threaten me!"
I take a deep breath. "Morden Maleficum and Devdan Vexx."
