Chapter Fifteen
Haknyeon stares daggers at Morden as he taps send on his phone and then turns back to face his hostage with a smirk that would make a serial killer proud. "That was uncalled for, doing that to my Jusadan!"
Morden rolls his eyes. "She has no idea that the two men she once bumped into that fateful day at the local library would come back to bite her. That they would play a sly game with her. And it's about to get even MORE fun!"
Haknyeon shakes his head. "Where's your partner?"
"Devdan? He's out making the next play in our game. Don't worry though, I plan on explaining everything to you, before we head on to our final round. After all, the winner takes all, I told you so. There ain't no turning back now."
Haknyeon snorts. "Was that a Kingdom pun?"
"Kingdom? Whatever the hell that is. I really don't see how ANYONE can find K-Pop enjoyable. I'm just simply going to call 'checkmate,' like a game of chess. Keep the tension, you know?"
"Okay, you're definitely making a Kingdom pun," Haknyeon says with a roll of his eyes. "Those are lyrics from Checkmate."
"Good ear, Jeju Boy. Now listen to this, it's college time and a young, aspiring fantasy-mystery-thriller writer named Avalynn Ravn is wandering about the library, searching for books to read to inspire her creativity. She loves James Patterson books, especially how they're formatted. A thriller should read quickly, with the fast-paced action involved. The short chapters lend to the fast-paced nature. She grabs a few to check out, but she accidentally bumps into a dangerous duo, Morden and Devdan, who are just like characters in one of those books. Insane, smart, crafty psychopaths."
Haknyeon's skin crawls with goosebumps as he speaks.
"Devdan is curious about the book in her hands currently on top of the stack she carries. It's called The Coast-to-Coast Murders. A delightfully evil piece that centers around split personality disorder. She politely smiles at him and then walks past him. She thinks he's creepy and strange. Always has. What is she though? She's no peach, writing stories like that. The two watch her check out and leave. But it isn't the last time they will interact."
Haknyeon's mouth falls open and a gulp slides slowly down his throat.
"Of course, Morden and Devdan spend months and years formulating the perfect plan to mess around with her. There's intensive research conducted about her. They look into her past as well as her likes and dislikes."
Haknyeon feels his mouth run dry and his heart skips a beat.
"She has a love of hockey and K-Pop, starting from being a huge fangirl of BTS to TXT, Enhypen, ATEEZ, WEi, The Boyz, ONEUS, Pentagon, ASTRO, Seventeen, Monsta X, EXO, SHINee...she picks her biases and wreckers. The two don't like the music genre themselves, find it boring and very much overrated, still they press on. They discover Ju Haknyeon, Choi Jongho, Boo Seungkwan, Jo Jinho, Ko Shinwon and more!!"
"Stop! Stop!" Haknyeon shouts out, finally finding his voice. "I get it."
"You wanna know what our next move is, don't you? It's killing you to know!" Morden sneers. "Shinwon. That's our next move."
Haknyeon shakes his head. "You can't kidnap Shinwon, that's her best friend!"
"Who said we were going to kidnap him? Well, who said it was going to be a successful kidnapping? No, we're just showing her that we can do whatever we want. After that, we're going to move on to our next part."
"Killing me?"
"No...that wouldn't be any fun. Remember, we like fun games, Haknyeonie."
