Normal
The awkward tension continued to the next day, leo pulled ford across the hallway to take him outside so they can see the outdoors. Stan and the twins but didn't interfere as ford tried to fight back, the other old man looked like he was distracted and last thing he wanted to do was to go outside.
Dipper and Mabel watched intrigued more mid bite of their cereal as Stan kept his eyes on the newspaper annoyed with the commotion.
"Come on old maaaan I wanna go!" Leo whined as he yanked on fords hand.
"Leo we have work, I can't take a little time from the portal to play silly games," ford sighed but cried out when the boy kicked him in the shin.
"Ow shit!" Leo yelled first when he realized it was his injured leg.
"Take it outside!" Stan finally yelled from the kitchen table.
"Stanford come on," Leo begged.
Ford sighed deeply but agreed fully, walking with Leo outside and closed the door behind them.
Leo gasped looking around as a smile grew on his face seeing the trees and the birds.
"Dad it's so green!" Leo jumped still holding his hand.
"Yea I guess it's been a long time since I've been around earths nature," ford took in the scene. They've gone through dusty dunes and flat lands, alienated planets, but nothing compares to their home. Maybe he did need this.
"You got your ankle bracelet on?" Ford asked.
"And turned on," Leo nodded showing the little ankle device. It creates a healing radiation to speed up their injuries, ford used it the most since he couldn't have Leo help his injuries in the past but there's a handful of times the boy used it. Luckily he rarely got this injured.
"By tomorrow you should have just a cut there, if you stop kicking me," ford nudged him gently and Leo stuck his tongue out.
They walked to the side trail together as Leo stopped to look at a lot of the plants and flowers in curiosity. Not remembering anything about his home so he was seeing it all for the first time. His yellow and blue eyes were wide in awe.
"You know these are the woods I began writing my journals based on, those stories I told you about a lot of them started here," ford knelt down to the kids level and moved some branches so Leo could reach for the plant he was intrigued by.
"What's this?" He picked a stem of the plant to see it closer.
"These are ferns," ford explained.
"Is this going to be like our forever home?" Leo asked as they moved along.
"It can be, maybe when your older we can go somewhere else and see more of the world," ford offered, they never thought it would be possible to come back so soon so he didn't really have a plan for them. But he wanted to make sure Leo would be safe from Bill first, make sure Bill was gone for good.
"Is Stanley going to really go?" The boy asked.
"i think it would be for the best," he tsked looking away.
"He doesn't seem that bad..." Leo mumbled but ford didn't reply, they continued their walk together till they lapped around back to the shack.
But Leo's eyes wondered back to the outdoors obviously not ready to go inside.
"Here, if you want to spend the day outside just make sure you stay in sight of the shack and don't talk to the locals, but here's my first journal, get to know the real gravity falls kiddo," ford handed Leo the journal he kept in his coats inside pocket, Leo smiled brightly and nodded agreeing.
"Come back downstairs when you're ready," he patted the top of the boys head when he walked back inside and the child hugged the book close to his chest.
"Okay dad," he beamed and went on his own.
Ford went through the door but waited to see where Leo went to, worried for his safety as a habit, but the boy made himself comfortable on the edge of the wooden porch. Sitting against the corner of the house, and looked at the bird that flew over the house. Ford let out a deep breath and closed the door.
Leo let his non wounded leg dangle off the edge of the porch and propped his other leg up enough to rest the book on. He flipped through the pages catching a glimpse of a few pictures that were sketched, till he got to the first page of the first journal.
Leo spent the next hour deeply invested in the mysteries of this small town. He was so entertained by the way ford first viewed the anomalies that he's been telling the boy as long as he could remember. But the journal was a whole different view on what he's been told. He smiled at the idea of his father not knowing everything, everyone has to start somewhere.
And it started at this house.
Leo perked up hearing something coming from the side of the house, it sounded like footsteps. The boy held his breath when a red head girl passed him, whistling a tune in her own world. The red head paused and turned looking back at the child she passed.
They both stared not sure of the other, Leo's eyes turned cold as he moved the journal closer behind him now.
"Whoa little man I didn't see you there," she jumped not recognizing him.
"Don't tell Stan I'm just on my break," she winked holding a finger to her lips.
"O-okay?" Leo held the book to his chest again.
"Oh that's like dippers mystery journal right? So that must make you that little dude that came out of the portal, soos told me about you," the teenager chuckled and dug under the porch to drag out a cooler stan leaves full of sodas.
Leo was speechless as he couldn't make any words come out, he was frozen in fear of meeting a human.
"Want one?" She offered and tossed the kid a soda anyways. Leo caught it quickly before it hit him.
"I'm Wendy, I didn't catch your name," she sat on the porch next to his feet with a small smile.
"Leo, I don't know if I'm allowed to talk to you," he set the book down and pulled his feet back.
"Well I can go somewhere else for my break man, no worries I'll get out of your hair," she shrugged with no hard feelings.
"Why are you on break?" Leo tilted his head to the side not seeing this new person as a threat anymore.
"Caaause I don't want to just sit around in the front of the shack, either way I'm not doing what I'm suppose to," Wendy grinned and Leo smiled a little at her dry humor.
"So what do you do then?" He asked while they sat together.
"Straight up not much, hang out with the pines twins and soos, and my friends come pick me up early sometimes, mr pines is pretty laid back, not like anything happens in the gift shop," Wendy chuckled.
"So what's with you then? You're a bit young to be some dimension bounty hunter with a gun that soos told me about," she raised a brow.
"We are not bounty hunters," Leo scrunched up his nose, not understanding why that guy thought he was. "We just we're dimension hoping cause the demons were getting to close,"
"Whoa demons? That's gotta be kind of scary, what are you like eleven?" Wendy was taken back a little but from what they've seen it's not to much crazier.
"Mhm," he nodded enthusiastically.
"Wow,"
"Well you know your like my little brothers age, why don't I come back later after dinner and bring you some of his old clothes, and if your here during winter you definitely are going to want to wear something other than your bloody torn clothes," Wendy offered noticing how dirty the kid actually was.
"What's wrong with my bloody torn clothes?" Leo giggled.
"I got ten more minutes on break, mind if I hang out with you dude?" Wendy asked and he nodded, his eyes were big with child like excitement to be around someone who seemed kind.
"Tell me about this book, you know the author and all so tell me about that," Wendy motioned to the journal and Leo flipped back to the pages.
"It's actually really funny because my d-mentor was just discovering all of these things that apparently are impossible to the rest of the world, and over 30 years later he's a pro!" Leo showed Wendy the pages as his voice got higher in excitement.
Wendy smiled listening to the little kid, when she first saw him he didn't look as young as he was, obviously a child but he had a colder demeanor and uncertainty with her, but it didn't take much for him to warm up to her. And now he looked and acted like the child he is, soos must've not seen this side of the kid last night if he described the kid to be quiet and mean.
But the blonde child was talkative and had a glow when he smiled. Hopefully Mabel would be down for a fun little make over for the kid.
