Ford went upstairs after the frequency of the memory gun echoed past the mystery shack to handle the confused government workers.
The rest of them waited inside till the vehicles left the property. Leo kept his distance as he had his guard up around the others. He could sense he wasn't as welcomed as his father figure was, he was a strange boy from a strange world, why would they welcome him.
He went to step forward to go outside but gasped grabbing his knee where the gash was. He could walk but he couldn't put to much weight on his leg.
"Ow ow," Leo whispered and felt someone hold his arm up.
"Need help?" It was that Mabel girl.
"I'm fine," Leo pulled his arm back.
"So like are you a human or something cool from that sci-fi dimension?" Mabel asked as she followed anyways.
"I'm human?" Leo didn't understand why she was asking.
"Mabel," dipper motioned his sister to come back, she didn't understand why she couldn't talk to the possible new friend. Leo had his guard up as he stared at the twins, sensing tension from the boy twin by the way he was wary of him.
Leo looked at the ground frowning and scooted away from the new people.
"They shouldn't bother us anymore, Leo, you should take a seat kid," Ford came back inside.
"It's fine," the eleven year old sassed.
"Then go downstairs, I will meet you there ," he sighed and the blonde boy rolled his eyes and followed the order.
"Bye Leo it was nice meeting you," Mabel waved smiling. He didn't acknowledge the other children and limped to the vending machine to go back down.
"You two also, hit the hay," Stan motioned to the children he was responsible for.
"But wait it's the author of the journal I have so many questions and theories I want to ask and share?" Dipper came up to ford excited to meet the man that he's been obsessed with all summer.
"I said hit the hay," Stan pushed the twins to the door and they both pouted but went upstairs.
"I'm just gonna.. go..." soos inched to the door and pulled out his phone.
"Wendy I have so much to tell you, clear the next 14 hours,"
The older twin brothers took a deep breath now that they were alone together in the shack. Ford wasn't impressed with what has became of what was once his study and home in the woods.
Ford walked past a mirror and stopped to really look at himself again. He couldn't remember the last time he saw himself in a mirror, his looks weren't exactly important to him in the past few decades.
"When did we become old men?" Stan stood with him in the mirror. Side by side they still looked damn near identical but aged differently still.
"You look like dad," ford smiled a little.
"Ew don't say that," Stan chuckled crossing his arms.
It was quiet for a moment and the awkwardness settled in.
"Look Stanley," ford started.
"I'll let you stay here till the kids go off back home but after that I want this mystery shack shut down, I want my name back and I want my house back, I'm not planning on dimension hunting and for Leo-" he pinched the bridge of his nose frustrated and stopped himself from going off.
"You're really not going to thank me," Stan sighed disappointed, it wasn't a question but a matter of fact. There was still resentment between them for their own fucked up reasons.
"So you kicking that kid out too now that he's back home?" Stan went to the fridge and cracked open a beer.
"No ive been taking care of him, he stays," ford shook his head and kept his eyes down.
"What about his parents or family?" Stan frowned.
"Doesn't have either, he's been under my care since they died," ford went to the fridge and also grabbed his own can of beer.
"Does he know they're dead?" The scam artist asked surprised by the brutal honesty.
"Of course, I don't hide things from him, he's old enough to know," the scientist shrugged.
"He's still a kid, that stuff can mess a kid up," Stan offered concerned.
"I know.. I know, I wish i didn't have to but the truth is important to what we've been through, I'm hoping he still has a shot to having a normal life here," ford sat at the kitchen table and placed his hand over his face.
"As normal as i can hope for," he mumbled.
"So how did he end up in another dimension if this is home?" Stan sat with him and sipped the beer.
"Extremely complicated, all you need to know is this is his home too, I want you out at the end of the summer," ford told him sternly.
Stan looked at him tiredly, he felt sad that they couldn't even rebuilt their past, not even a simple friendship from his own brother.
"You got it point Dexter, but that means I want you and your little buddy to stay far from the twins, I don't need them to be put in any sort of danger, cause for all I know they're the only family I have left," Stan scoffed setting his can on the table harder than he meant.
Ford nodded and Stan left the kitchen frustrated but it was time for bed, he just wanted the day to be over.
Ford leaned forward with his face in his hands, his glasses pushed up to his forehead, sighing deeply just to feel like he could breathe again.
"Dad?" A soft voice called to him and he peaked over.
"Leo I thought you went downstairs," ford saw the boy limp over to him.
"I don't want to go alone," Leo stood by, ford picked him up and held him close on his lap.
"I got scared," he rested his head on his adoptive father's shoulder exhausted.
"We're safe here now, okay? I don't want you to be put in harms way anymore, we're staying on this earth," ford gave him a reassuring hug and the boy nodded.
"You too right? You're not going to get hurt either?" Leo asked quietly.
"I will do whatever I have to do to keep you safe, but I think I'm getting too old for those kinds of adventures again," he chuckled.
"How's your pain kiddo?" Ford looked at the young blonde child still concerned.
"It hurts a lot," Leo finally admitted.
"Alright let's go downstairs and see what we can do but you are going to get lots of rest,"ford rubbed the back of the boys head as Leo wrapped his arms around his neck, wanting to be carried.
Ford smiled when he carried the boy, he's been raising the boy since he was a year old, he's taught him how to walk, how to write and read, how to survive, he's loves and care for Leo like he was his own son. He never saw himself having a child but Leo needed him, it's been the two of them for the past ten years. This was his son.
Coming back to their home earth wasn't planned, it was the right time and place for the accident. But now ford can only hope for a better life for them now.
