The Travel Companion

I love trains.

Trains are the best.
The smooth ride across the country.
Beautiful scenic routes, different cities.
And my personal favorite...
People.

I love to make guesses.
This might be a young couple who recently found love.
This old lady is visiting her grandchildren.
This teenager who is constantly biting his nails have ran away from his abusive family.
This middle aged man is actually going to see his mistress while lying to his wife about business trip.

Possibilities are endless.

That night, I was all alone in that specific part of the train. Coach was empty and I was bored out of my mind.
When train stopped at the station, only one man came in my coach. I was excited to observe him and talked to him but he was one of the quiet type.

He was young, perhaps late twenties or early thirties. Constantly on his smartphone which was very annoying. It was no fun to observe him. So I started to look out from the window.

"Bullshit! Total bullshit!"

I quickly turned my head as his voice startled me.

"Everything alright, mate?" I asked. Veins on his forehead were protruding. His face was flushed, nostrils flaring. He was literally angry like a bull.

"People are ridiculous. These fucking idiots know nothing and they just make shit up wasting everyone's time."

Now I was genuinely curious.

"What happened?" I asked.

"Come here and see for yourself." He patted right to his side urging me to sit. I sat beside him and he showed me a post on Facebook.

A young couple claimed that some evil spirit is causing disturbance in their new house. Spirit seems to throw stuff around, lock the doors, all the usual supernatural stuff.

I laughed.

"See? People can make up shit just to get famous. Fucking idiots!"

"So you don't believe in supernatural things like spirits and ghosts?" I asked.

"What is it to believe in? These things make good stories but nothing else. All false without any true scientific evidence."

Conversation was becoming more interesting.

"But many believe in these things. They captured stuff on audio, video and lots of pictures and stuff." I said.

"All fake. All photoshopped to make us fucking fools." He was still furious.
"Alright, alright." I patted his shoulder.

Before I could say anything else, my station came.
I said my goodbyes and got out, leaving him with his anger.

Two months later, I was traveling again when I saw him again. He looked disturbed and disheveled.
He saw, then remembered me.

"You!?!" He almost shouted. He sat beside me and sighed loudly.

"You okay, mate?" I asked. "You don't look so good"

"You, you won't believe what happened with me for past six weeks."

"What happened?"

"Six weeks ago, things start disappearing and reappearing all around the house. I live alone."

I laughed. Then I figured he was dead serious.

"Then weird stuff start to happen. My food whatever I eat, wherever I buy it from had pebbles and sand in them. Even fruits!"

I suppressed my laughter with all my will power.

"Last night, I slept in my own room, door locked and everything. I have no history of sleep walking or anything but I woke up, with my bed, in my pajamas in another city. Another fucking city!"

I just looked at him with confusion.

"There's something evil. There's a demon haunting me, man. A demon. A FREAKING DEMON. " He was acting crazy, rocking back and forth muttering to himself.

I changed my seat. Who wants to sit beside a crazy man anyway.

I sat down in a window seat, smiled as I looked out.

I had worked so hard past six weeks making one more idiot believe in me.
