This is how it went down with my late uncle.

My uncle was a journalist. Many times he used to come back late, as it was the nature of his job.
One night, he became way too late. His motorbike was punctured and he forgot to ask his colleagues to drop him home which was 10 miles away from his workplace.
Worried about his old mother, he thought of going home on foot.

10 miles of forest and mountains.

That night was none other than a moonless night. It was dark and the way was long. He took a small secluded path that was used by fishermen to catch freshwater fish from the stream.

He walked and walked.

Then she saw something in the corner of his eye.

There was some dark being near the stream.

He looked. He got scared.

It was hideous.

He became rooted to the ground with his eyes wide.

He was skeptical of supernatural and used to mock the town legends of unidentified creatures, jinns, and other beings.

Unable to steer his eyes from a humanoid creature, he begins to notice something strange.

The creature was growing.
It grew, grew, grew and grew.

Taller, broader and more hideous.

Then he remembered something useful.

He remembered the myths about "Jal-Massaan".

He hurriedly got out his cigarettes and lighter. He quickly lit up his cigarette and kept his lighter burning. The creature took a step backward seeing the fire.

My uncle carefully keeping his cigarette lit, ran towards his village. He told the story to his old mother who cried with happy tears because many became mad after seeing this creature.

My uncle was a 17th person to experience sightings first hand that I know of.

So the legend goes like this.

If you go out at night near any water body in moonless nights, you have a high probability of finding a creature lovingly called "Jal-Massaan".
The name means " water-demon".

Jal-massaan is hideous, humanoid creature and likes dirty water. If you look at it, this creature somehow started to grow to scare you. Some say it grows so much that in the end, all you can see is massaman" nothing else. He feeds off your fear of him.

To be safe, it is necessary to have a fire or a light. He doesn't like fire. Most folks say that he can be seen now because there's too much light in the area due to street lights.

But the abundance of its sightings, this myth seems very near to be true.
