The Little Girl I met Once

It was a sunset, the end of the day-

My head was down with sorrow and guilt.

A gentle breeze brought to me an autumn leaf,

Reminding me, 'All that begins has an end'.

Clutching the faded life tightly in hand,

I moved forward with the surrounding crowd.

I did not look up- or I might have seen

The beautiful sunshine rushing to me.

In human form it was – a little girl,

Her hair was mahogany, her eyes were chocolate-

Melting as she said something to me-

I was too caught up in her smile.

Ten months ago I'd seen that face:

Bloodied, crushed and in pain-

Though it was older and without a smile,

I instantly perceived the truth.

I tried to imagine how her days went by-

Whether the sun ever set, whether darkness reigned,

But the smile in front was too bright,

I could never even imagine it fading.

But it should have, someday-

After all, it was her mother that she'd lost,

To a reckless driver's foolishness;

The wound was deep, and death instant.

I wondered how she kept the clouds at bay,

For as she passed, I saw her bills overdue,

None of it showed on her face, though-

It was a cheery summer day.

Showers of rain cleanse the soul of Earth,

Clouds give way to the shining sun,

Snowflakes fall with promise of spring,

Everything passes, good or bad.

The crown maybe heavy, but a queen carries it tall;

In stride, with pride, and a smile on her face-

Such was that little girl, the girl I met once,

And never did twice, but think of forever.
