• Chapter Two •

Olivia

I took one look at the black-haired beauty in the cheerleading outfit and knew who she was. She had a glare on her face, a hand on one hip and was gripping her smoothie with the other. I could tell she wasn't happy.

"Uh, hi!" I started, trying to lighten the mood. "I'm Liv!"

"Oh, I know who you are!" she sneered, her blue eyes icy as she watched me. "I just came to make sure you know to keep your filthy hands off my boyfriend!"

My assumptions were correct. I was looking at the notorious May.

"No, I–"

"Don't even try to deny it; I saw you twirling your hair and flirting," she said, taking a step towards me. I backed up slightly.

"I wasn't—"

"Do what I say or else," May snapped, cutting me off.

"Okay! I get it. Now let me go," I replied, stepping around her. She shifted slightly so I bumped into her accidentally but really didn't care enough to apologize.

"You stupid blonde bimbo!" she yelled, holding me back by the shoulder. I tensed at the sudden contact and slinked away from it.

Suddenly, I gasped as a cold, thick liquid came into contact with the top of my head, and slid down my back. I glanced around to see everyone either laughing or whispering and pointing. Unshed tears were burning in my eyes, and the humiliation was almost suffocating.  Before I could think, my feet were slapping against the floor as I ran out of the cafeteria.

I was sprinting so fast that I bumped right into someone and landed with a thud on the concrete walkway.

"S-sorry," I mumbled, looking up.

Standing above me stood a guy holding out his hand to me. He had beautiful olive-toned skin that complemented his green eyes, which sparkled like emeralds. His dark brown hair was in a short, messy kind of quiff. It looked like he'd run his hands through it a couple of times. I took the extended hand and stood up. It seemed I was meeting a lot of people this way.

"Are you okay?" he asked. His voice was smooth and reassuring, but I didn't trust my voice, so I settled on a head nod. "You don't look okay. Is that a smoothie in your hair?" I swallowed hard.

"Um, yeah," I mumbled.

"Oh well, I heard fruits make good conditioner," he joked. I tried to smile, though I was sure it was much closer to a grimace. "Remind me not to pursue comedy." I nodded.

"Look, I've got to get this out of my hair, but I guess I'll see you around," I said, not meeting his eyes. He nodded.

When I got into the girls toilets, I let go of the sobs that had been building in my chest. As the tears rolled down my cheeks, I filled my hands with water from the sink and poured it onto my head. I stood there scrubbing and trying to rinse the smoothie out before drying it to the best of my abilities with the hand dryer.

I then took a few deep breaths and collected myself before I washed my tear-stained face. I stared in the mirror and frowned at my messy hair, and tied it into a bun before heading to my next class. As I walked, I kept my head down, avoiding the glances that my earlier incident had caused. I sat in the back of the room and tried to not get noticed.

I didn't want anymore unwanted attention, as I felt humiliated enough by May. While I could tell she was going to do her best to make my life a living hell, I also knew that anything was better than living at home. This I could deal with.

When my classes were over, I walked across campus to my room and saw that my name was added to the white board outside our door. I smiled at that, feeling happy to be included. I unlocked the door, and went inside my room.

The sun was beaming as I opened the curtains. As I looked outside, I noticed something swell. That really cute, tanned, green-eyed boy I ran into earlier was playing basketball at the courts. He seemed like a nice person and he was easy on the eyes.

Now that I could get used to, I thought.

Hayley wasn't back yet, so I opened the drawer to my bedside table pulling out my pen and diary. I closed the drawer and sat on my bed by the windowsill, still wanting to glance at the guy.

I picked up my pen and opened it to the next blank page.

Dear Diary,

Things are okay so far at my new school... My roommate, Hayley, is really nice. Yesterday, she showed me around the campus, and has been really welcoming. Unfortunately there's this girl called May... who's mean and quick to react. A smoothie in my hair wasn't good, especially getting it out. But every school has a mean girl, right? Well, anyways, it's better to be here safe than with my father. There's also this guy that I bumped into, and he's playing basketball outside at the courts... he seemed nice, but he probably pitied the poor girl covered in pink liquid. I'm hoping tomorrow will be better.

~ Liv

I put the diary back into my cabinet and slumped back onto my bed, staring at the ceiling for a moment, before I began watching the television. I wasn't entirely sure what to do and didn't have enough homework to pass the time.

I didn't realize I had drifted into a light sleep until I woke up to a bang on the door. I jumped up and looked around my room. Hayley still wasn't back yet. Confused, I walked over to the door and opened it. Nobody was there, just a note on the floor. Curiosity got the better of me and I picked up the paper to read it.

Hey Liv,

I really like you a lot.  Please meet me tonight at the basketball court at 8:00pm, and I'll prove it.

                 — Jay

I sighed as I read it. I wasn't thrilled, but it felt like he wasn't going to leave me alone and the only thing I could do was to set him straight. I wasn't interested, nor was I planning on making May even more pissed off at me than she was already.

I glanced at the clock on my side table and saw that it was almost eight o'clock. With another sigh, I put on a jumper before heading to the basketball courts. I got there at a minute after eight, so I waited around for a few minutes looking out for Jay. A few minutes later, there was still no sign of him. I rolled my eyes and turned to go back to my dorm when I saw a figure walking toward me.

I froze for a moment. I had a feeling I knew who it was—as the figure walked closer, my suspicion was confirmed.

"Oh, Olivia! Poor desperate Liv. I knew you would come here for my boyfriend," May said, glaring at me.

"I-I – he sent me a note saying he liked me!" I protested.  "I was coming to tell him to leave me alone."

"I'm sure you were," May snapped sarcastically as she took a step towards me. "I think it was more like... desperate little Olivia just whoring around." She shoved me so hard I fell backwards to the ground. "You better watch your back. I'm going to make your life here suck."

EDIT:::

I woke up a little late the next morning. I quickly put on a pair of jeans and a purple long-sleeved top. I brushed my teeth and put on a little makeup. After checking the time again, I ended up I grabbing my book bag and running to class without eating breakfast. Luckily, I made into my maths class a second before the bell rang.

"Hey," Jay whispered to me as I sat next to him.

"What do you want Jay?" I answered, annoyed.

"Nothing."

"Good." I rolled my eyes and pulled out my books. Class then began and the room was silent, listening to the lesson.

"Hey, Liv."

"What, Jay?" I sighed.

"Nothing."

"Then you seriously need to stop talking to me." I couldn't risk annoying May again.

I hung back a little to avoid both Jay talking to me, and the rush of students leaving. Then I realized I waited a little too long and had much less time than I need to get to my next class which was pretty far. I started running down the hall and burst through the doors. I could feel the hot Florida sun beating down on me as I dodged groups of slow walkers down fairly narrow pathways that were lined with irises and wild sage. I swiftly moved out of someone's way before slamming into a strong feeling body.
