Seeing the Unexpected
Maka swiftly cut through the swarm of people bustling around Death City.
She did it; she was finally home sweet home. And this time she wouldn't leave without a word.
Two years ago, about a month after their graduation, Soul and Maka decided to take on heavier tasks. They traveled to China and Australia, New England and Brazil. Any place you can name, they've been there.
Though the times were great and light, Maka knew that there was something missing and she couldn't figure it out. Being alongside her partner was the only thing she craved more than anything and she wanted to find out why. Day after day, Maka would fight Kishins and glance at the white haired boy with sharp teeth. He would give her a smirk and a slap on the back for their accomplishment.
Maka then knew what she was craving--something more.
She wanted to be with Soul and not just the laying around the house on Sundays but, possibly, going on dates on Sundays. Living their lives, but not seperatly. Maka wanted so much more than to be just his partner.
She wanted to be his real soul mate.
Sadly, it turned out Soul wasn't on the same page. Maka has come home one night with a soggy umbrella and wet pigtails to whispers in the living room. She knew she shouldn't have dared listen in but she did.
"Rainy days are my favorite. Perfect for some...fun~" said a voice that Maka was unfamiliar with. There was some rustling before Soul came into view with messy hair, his jacket on the floor, and lipstick plastered on his lips.
He glanced in Maka's direction and his red orbs glowed with shock.
"Maka..." he said quietly, Maka pushing him away in shutting her door only to whisper "have your fun" before she disappeared.
That was the last time she saw Soul. He didn't show up for breakfast that morning. It seemed like he left in the middle of the night because there was no motorbike in the garage.
She wasn't upset. She wasn't upset.
She just walked in on her partner being seduced by some bimbo in Maka's apartment. Maka mostly paid the rent so it was her apartment.
So now, Maka Albarn had returned to Death City in hopes to reconnect with those who she left behind. Her blonde hair was left in small waves, outgrowing her pigtails about a year before. She no longer had her plaid skirt rather jeans and a plain t-shirt. It was comfy and Maka could easily use a weapon if she wanted.
Familiar faces passed and seemed to brighten when they noticed the young scythe miester. She gave them quick smiles as she made her way to Tsubaki and Black Star's place for the night.
Maka was short on money right now. Considering she picked up and used all her savings to start a new life, she had fallen short a couple years off her prediction.
She wasn't sure why she came back. Maybe her feelings for Soul were too strong or she just missed her old life. Whatever it was didn't matter, because she was back in her old home.
Maka smiled and let the brisk air clash with her locks, the breeze feeling nice on her hot skin. It was now peaceful due to rush hour being over and Tsubaki lived in a more reserved area.
On her way she couldn't help but glance up at the old, brick apartment that laid upon another. She clutched her bag with a firm hand as she tried to steady herself. Her eyes scanned over the room she used to tell secrets to the girls and the room where her and Soul ate together. The windows were cleaned, recently, which made a pang hit her chest.
Was Soul not affected by her move?
Her thoughts broke apart as the window opened to reveal the certain white hair she was searching for. He glanced outside and widened his eyes when they fell upon Maka.
She stood below, holding a bag in her hands and a dazed look on her face. Their eyes met and neither could breathe in this situation. The air felt thinner, the walls in the apartment felt heavier. What was happening? It was like there was no gravity between them?
Maka was the first to turn away, closing her eyes before reopening them to look at the path ahead of her. She would not fall for him again, not again. She couldn't.
Tsubaki welcomed her with open arms and a smile when she arrived.
"How was London?" she asked with a bright smile like she used to. "We missed you here."
"It was good, Tsubaki," Maka said with a smile that matched her friend's.
Black Star was out doing shopping with Kid because no one trusted him alone. Kid had invited himself when he knew that Maka was back in town and staying at the Star residence.
"So tell me about the engagement," Maka teased with wiggling eyebrows. Patty and Liz arrived a little after Maka did and they were all having a good time chatting.
"Oh, you guys," Tsubaki muttered as her cheeks flared red. "It's just a simple wedding..."
"That's a bunch of bull! Everything will be as big as me--Black Star!" The girls turned to see the two guys with shopping bags in hand. They giggled for a second like a bunch of school girls before going back to their conversation.
No one had brought up Soul, which Maka was thankful for, but someone hit her heart bad when they brought up her disappearance.
"So why did you leave?" Kid had asked a few seconds ago, Maka stuttering on the spot. She wasn't ready to talk about her feelings, not yet. She had to remain cool though. Act cool, Maka.
"Well, uh, I was just..."
"And without Soul too? I thought it was a mission but-" Kid was hit in the arm by Liz as she gave a sympathetic look to the blonde.
"I think...Soul isn't a good topic right now," Tsubaki said quirky to the group.
"What you mean?! I think we should all visit him! He must be lonely after Maka left him!"
"He is, remember how he wouldn't clean anything for weeks--no, months until I started to come over? That place was so messy. Unsymmetrical even," Kid whined the last part as Maka's attention peeked up.
"What do you mean?" Maka asked him as Kid looked her way.
"He wouldn't clean that dumb apartment because he was so broken hearted when you left," Kid told her. "Didn't you know? He left about a thousand voice mails or that's what he told us at least."
"I turned off my phone when I got to London...and I lost it at the airport," Maka told them as they nodded their heads.
"He also wouldn't hang out with the almighty Black Star!" Black star shouted as Maka turned to him.
"So...he was upset that I left?" Maka asked them. They all nodded their heads in agreement as she sat still for a second. Soul being upset hasn't crossed her mind. I mean, after seeing him with a girl like that she had expected them to run off together and become partners.
So Soul was slowly going mad after she left?
Tears welled up in her eyes as she looked up to see her friends staring at her.
"I need to see him." Kid threw her the spare keys he had borrowed to clean Soul's apartment. Maka caught them with ease and dashed out the front door.
"You think they'll make up?" Tsubaki asked the group.
"What will they say?" Patty asked with a bow concerned face for her friend.
"More like, what they'll do," Liz said with an amused smirk on her face.
Maka was running so fast her heart was pounding outside her chest. She didn't stop until the apartment came into view where her shoes slid along the pavement. Her old home stood unlit inside.
She cautiously walked to the front door, making quiet footsteps as she entered the building that lead her to her floor. The long staircase reminded her of the time Maka and Soul were late for school and stumbled down the metallic stairs.
The bright orange door she had come to know was now peeling and rotten looking. Kid must have not cleaned this because she doesn't remember this door ever looking like this.
She glanced down at the golden key in her hand, shaking slightly as she thrusted it forward. Maka came only inches away from the door when she stopped herself.
She couldn't just walk in, this wasn't her house anymore. What if it startled Soul and he called the police or had a bat or something?
Wait, he's a weapon he doesn't need that.
So that makes it even more dangerous. He could slice her arm off with ease.
Maka confronted her fears and confidently pushed the door in after unlocking. A wave of Soul hit her in the face as she looked around. It was neat but not entirely. Soul's clothes were in a basket on the coffee table. His food that he had left untouched was on the counter. Even his dirty socks laid around the floor in some areas.
The girl would have scolded him if it wasn't for the fact they were no longer friends--not even partners.
She slowly paced around the room and took in every detail. Everything was the same but have off a different vibe. It was no longer Maka.
Carefully, she made her way to the room she had spent so many nights crying over the incident. Crying over a battle scar. Crying over her father.
And almost every time, Soul was right next to her.
The door creaked open once she pushed on it. It was like she never left in there. Her bed was unmade and there were books scattered around. Notes sprawled across the desk she had worked on.
A wave of hurt and sadness washed over her and she felt breaking down, on her bed. She wanted to be in her room. She wanted to come home.
All at once she felt so many memories fill her brain that she tried to forget. She promised herself she wouldn't cry anymore over Soul. She wanted to get over him, but deep down she knew he was still apart of her life. It hurt so much to be here.
She had to leave. It was a bad idea to come here.
Maka turned her heel onto to ram into someone's chest, their arms snaking around their shoulders who gripped them tightly.
"Who are you? And what are you doing in that room?" an angry voice horses at her. Maka stood still before lifting her chin to look at the red eyes that haunted her for so long. He seemed to realize who he was holding and loosened his grip. She thought he was about to let go before he pulled her into his chest and hugged her tightly.
"Maka...where have you been? I-I didn't know where you went or if you were safe," Soul rambled as he held his miester. He felt his shirt wet from tears she must have had in her eyes that were now leaking from the beautiful irises.
"Soul...i'm sorry...I'm so sorry," she apologized as she held his shirt tighter. Soul had gotten taller because he could easily rest his chin on the crown of her head. His stance which was once laid back a mad relaxed was confident and powerful.
She wondered if he worked out as a coping measure after she left. But that wasn't important right now. All that mattered to both of them was their partner standing next to them, arms wrapped around the other.
"Maka, explain. Now, because-"
"I love you."
"What?" Soul took a step back, thinking he heard her muddled voice wrong.
"I love you, I always have."
And that's all they needed.
