Partner, Roommate, and Best Friend

Partner~

Being partners, Soul and Maka cared deeply for each other.

Soul didn't have to protect Maka, he wanted to.

Maka didn't have to be partners with Soul, but she wanted to.

Soul didn't have to stay with Maka, but he wanted to.

Maka didn't have to fight alongside Soul, but she wanted to.

They didn't have to be partners, but they wanted to.

Soul sat beside Maka. He recently got news that it was his last week in Death City. Death had told Soul about the opportunity of a life time, going to Brazil and protecting the school in the capital. Another death scythe was already waiting for Soul to arrive and help him out. Soul had declined instantly, in his head, outside he asked Death, in a rude tone, what was in it for him. Death said he would be repaid greatly with money and a mansion near DWMA, the villa where some death scythes, also Kid, lived.

It's been years since Maka defeated the kishin, she turned 26 last month. The pair had finally admitted their feelings at 15 when the Halloween dance was a masquerade theme, they fell in love as they danced with a 'stranger.'

Soul watched as his miester scanned the lines of the pages, she didn't seem to even notice his presence. Soul made a 'ahem' noise as he waited for her to react. Maka continued with her book, eyes darting across the page.

"Maka?"

"Soul." She set her book on her lap and glared at him. "What?" She looked agitated as Soul stared into her eyes. She didn't want to be apart from her book to long, she had just gotten it.

Soul made a very uncool stuttering noise before clearing his throat. "Mind going with me to dinner?" He asked her. She rolled her eyes and nodded before returning to her book.

When the pair arrived at a restaurant in Death City a awkward aura came off of Soul as he fidgeted across from Maka. She didn't notice the aura at first because she was looking at the menu. Her eyes escaped the delicious appetizers and laid on Soul. His shirt wasn't buttoned up right and his hair was messier than usual. He looked like a mess.

"Soul? You alright?" Maka asked as she placed her hand on his. He jumped a little at her touch but relaxed a second later. "Soul?"

Soul looked at her with hurt eyes as he tried to mutter the unbearable. "We'll always be partners, you know?" Soul started it light. Maka felt uncomfortable at his statement when he didn't look at her. Was he going to leave her? "I, today-I got an offer in Brazil." Yep, there it was. Maka's heart shattered as her weapon reclined his hand from hers. "It's a great place and it's great pay."

"So, what, your doing it for money?" Maka's eyes teared up as she spoke.

"Sort of..." He trailed off. Maka picked herself off the chair and reached for her bag.

"Fine. You want to go to Brazil? Go ahead, I'm not going to stop you." She wiped her eyes and turned her heel. As she headed away from her love she turned her head slightly to mutter a few words she never thought she'd say to Soul, "Your just like Papa."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's been a year since Soul left. That night, Maka ran to the apartment, slamming her door shut. Soul had pleaded for her to let him in but she never did. He gave up eventually and Maka guessed he left. It was silent except for her heart, which shattered like broken glass.
Maka dragged her feet into the kitchen as she prepared her breakfast for one. Her sulkiness was to awful for the group to bear so she mainly was alone now a days. Her eyes had bags under them from not sleeping, she never slept anymore. Her hair was tangled and greasy.
There was a faint click of the door open. The intruder shut the door with a slam and dropped some sort of bag. Maka was frozen before she moved closer to the door. She peered over the counter and saw...nothing. There was nothing there. She shrugged thinking it was her imagination.
A pair of strong arms engulfed Maka's body as she turned. She didn't see the person but they were strong.
"Let go of me." She threw her fists at the person.
"Maka, hey, Maka! Chill!" Called an unforgettable voice. Maka dropped her hands as she looked up at the tall stranger. Soul. She slammed her body against his as he twirled her around.
"S-Soul? What are you doing here?" Maka's voice quivered as Soul let her down.
"Maka," he took her hand, "I'm sorry, so, so, sorry." Maka didn't want to believe him, he was like her dad anyway. He left her for something better.
"Soul, I don't-"
"Wait, hear me out." She paused and attempted to nod. She wanted to believe him, she really did.
Soul grabbed her hand and pulled her across the room and sat her on the couch. He wasn't sure if she was comfortable with him sitting next to her so he sat across from her. Soul rested in the coffee table with his hands in his lap.
"Maka." He stared into her eyes.
Maka tried, really hard, not to look into his eyes. She still believed he was like her father, after all, he did leave her.
"I want you to know why i left." Soul looked for confirmation to continue.
"Soul," she got up, "I know why you did it, money." She walked out of the room to finish her breakfast. Soul let out a loud sigh and grabbed her wrist.
"Will you just listen to me?!" He shouted at her. She gave a worried look before standing in front of him, arms crossed. Soul took a deep breathe before kneeling on one kneel. Maka raised an eyebrow and watched as her weapon pulled out a small, velvet box. She gasped and covered her mouth when she realized what was happening.
"Maka Albarn, the reason I left was to get enough money so I could give you the life you deserve, feed for maybe a family one day, and buy this ring." Maka started to tear up when Soul spoke. "So, will you do me the honor of marrying me?" She nodded her head rapidly, forgetting and forgiving what Soul did. He brought his face close to hers as he rose. Soul planted a small kiss on her forehead before gliding down to her lips. Her lips. The ones Soul had dreamed about kissing again.
When they broke the kiss they both giggled. Maka hugged Soul, not to tight, and whispered some words into his ear. "We'll always be partners, you know?"
Roommate~
Maka stepped out of the shower, towel already wrapped around her body. She hummed a little as she glanced at her reflection and started to get ready. Her hair was a mess and she had some mascara lines going down her face, the makeup from last night wouldn't come off.
Bang, bang, bang.
"Maka? How much longer?" Maka, being the sass queen, turned to the door and scoffed.
"I'm a girl, Soul. I take longer in the bathroom so wait." She went to tie her hair up as another set of banging erupted from the other side.
"Maka, we have ten minutes! You took forever to shower." Maka, even though she was in a towel, opened the door to let Soul in. As she turned to face her reflection again, Soul blushed a little bit realizing she still had a towel on.
Soul waltzed over to his sink and held the toothbrush in between his teeth. He ran the water and glided the toothpaste tube across the toothbrush. Soul began running the toothbrush along his teeth.
Maka fumbled with her hair as Soul starting brushing his teeth, which Maka had already done. She pulled her frizzy hair into one pigtail as Soul smirked at her reflection. Maka noticed and bumped her hip with his to scoot him over. Soul regained his balance and continued swishing water in his mouth.
"Move over, hog." She teased. He smirked at a her before wiping his mouth and pushing a small comb through his hair. Maka finished her pigtails and brushed them out so they were perfectly straight. She grabbed a small bottle of mascara before applying small touches.
Soul placed his comb on the sink and walked out to change into his school uniform.
Maka finished her makeup and walked out to get ready as well. She walked into her room before slipping on her uniform. The miester smoothed out her uniform before smiling at the wall mirror hanging on the right. She grabbed her bag before rushing out of her room.
Soul met Maka halfway to the kitchen. They were in a rush so Maka grabbed the toaster while Soul threw in the toast. Soul grabbed the orange juice from the fridge while Maka held out two glasses. Soul poured as Maka stood their, waiting for him not to take his sweet time.
Maka grabbed the toast from the toaster as it popped out. Soul gulped down the last of his orange juice before placing it in the sink, he grabbed Maka's as well. She stuck a piece of toast in her mouth as she threw one to Soul. He missed, like everyday.
"Oh shit."
"Eat it anyway. In not buying you breakfast at school, again." She shook her finger at him before grabbing her bag. Soul picked up the toast and dusted it off. He grabbed his bag and keys before placing the bread between his teeth.
This is how Maka and Soul get ready, every morning.
Best Friend~
Soul had done it. He left Death City that morning.
Soul had recently gotten an invitation for his brothers wedding in Italy. Normally, Soul wouldn't give a crap about what his family did but this time his brother has begged him, his brother never begged. His family had also been badgering him about coming back to them and performing.
Like hell.
Soul didn't have a petticoat reason for going back, maybe to go and never look back. If his parents tried anything he would leave, end of story.
Soul stepped off the plane and into the bustling airport. Soul was told he would be greeted by Wes, his brother, at terminal gate 3. He waited anxiously for Wes, not that he was excited he just wanted to go home and see his miester.
"Little brother!" A cheerful voice called. Soul turned to see Wes and a blonde headed bimbo hooked on his arm. Soul scrunched his nose when he got closer. Soul prefers flat-chested bookworms...
"Why, hello little boy!" Yep, Soul hates her. He tried to act cool and stretched out his arm to give a friendly handshake. She gladly accepted and shook his hand, a little to long fit Soul's liking. "I'm Megan!" She said cheerfully.
"Hi." He plainly said. The group started for the exit and towards the Evans car. Soul didn't care to much, he stared out the window the whole time thinking of one person; his miester.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Maka ripped the small note into shreds.

"Dear Maka,

Don't hate me but i'm not going to be home for dinner tonight, or for a while.

I've got to sort out some things but don't wait for me.

Your weapon,

Soul."

She ripped it in halve again as Blair peered behind the counter. "Maka?" She glared at the cat.

"What?" She growled.

"Your, uh, kind of scaring me." Blair whimpered. Maka flashed a hurt expression before letting the papers fall. Damn Soul for being such a jerk. Sort things out his ass.

"Sorry, Blair. Soul just-"

"Left? I know, I saw him leave this morning." She cut off Maka. Maka jumped to the cat and gripped her shoulders. She looked straight into the cat's eyes.

"Did he say where he was going?"

"Uh, I think he grumbled something about his parents." That's all Maka needed. The miester rushed to her room and packed; clothes, money, necessities, and bath room products. If Soul was going to see his parents there was only one place he could be. Key West.

"Thanks, Blair!" She shouted before running out of the apartment, not bothering to close the door.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maka trudged along the sandy beach as she walked away from the peer. Her boat had dropped her off near her hotel she was staying in later that night. Maka only had enough money for about two nights so she had to make this quick.
As she walked along the beach she saw men and women carrying flowers and ribbons. A wedding? The decorations were white and glowed in the setting sun. People started to take their seats making sure their kids kept quiet. The men and women carrying the decorations quickly adjusted hem before taking their own seats. As everyone began to shush others, a boy with white hair walked down the aisle. No, that can't be? Soul.
Maka rushed over to the aisle as the bride began her waltz. Soul stood at the top of the aisle, adjusting his neck tie. If Maka wasn't about to beat the crap out of him she would have admitted he was pretty hot right now. He was in a dark red dress shirt and nice, black dress pants. The bride had stopped on the other side of Soul. Soul was a little to the right, farther from the bride then he should be. Maka snapped and rushed down the aisle screaming his name.
"Maka?"
"I," She takes in a deep brethe and grips her knees, "abject." She says flatly.
"Abject?" Soul walks up to her and tries to straighten her up. "What are you-" A book slamed on his head, a few gasps escaped some people.
"You baka! Why didn't you tell me you were getting married?!"
Soul looked up at her, still clutching his head. "I couldn't tell you."
"Why?!"
"Because I'm not." As Soul finished his sentence, Wes came out with his necktie tied in a knot. The bride rushed over to her husband to be and retied it for him, scolding him in the process.
"Your b-brothers getting married?"
"Uh, duh. There is no way I would want to marry her." He whispered to her. Maka helped him up and apologized in a small voice.
"I thought you were going to make a dumb decision about coming back to your parents and preforming, leaving me behind. I couldn't let my best friend leave me." She wiped her eyes as tears began to fall. "I'm sorry, I embarrassed you, I'm a terrible-" Soul cut her off by placing his lips on hers. Maka was shocked but quickly rested and melted into the kiss. Some claps were heard and a, "wait so who's getting married?"
Maka giggled as they pulled back. Soul smirked and gripped her hand.
"I'd never leave you. Besides I actually am planning to get married today." She gave him a confused look before he smirked.
"You baka! We can't get married now."
"Come on, Maka. Why not?" He whined.
"I'm 16."
"So?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
