Chapter XIII: I of the Storm
All he could hear was screaming. No matter which direction he turned or how hard he covered his ears he couldn't escape the sound of their screaming. Deafening, head-splitting screams, like a storm threatening to swallow him whole. He couldn't escape. He knew what was about to happen. He knew he should do something. But for some reason all he could do was wrap his arms around his head and try to block out the noise. He couldn't do anything with them screaming. It hurt too much. If they would just be quiet. A morbid thought flittered in the back of his head. They would be quiet in death.
That's when he heard it. Singled out from the rest of the crowd. Someone crying. A lone child, desperately crying for their mommy and daddy. Everything seemed to slowly fade until all he could hear was the sounds of the child's tears. It seemed to transport him, away from the noise, away from the present, until he found himself looking upon a small, frightened child, alone in the night and crying in his bed as his house crumbled around him.
A burning light escaped from behind his closed eyelids and whispered through his blindfold. His mind snapped back to the present, but this time he was focused. He quickly reached his left hand toward Cloudburst, stopping her fall. His right hand he put in front of him as if telling the falling Ferris wheel to stop. And miraculously, it listened.
The screams crescendoed then tapered off at the sudden stop. The passengers looked out of their cabins, eying the ground with nervous trepidation while their counterparts on the ground shuffled to a stop to see what had saved them. The large Ferris wheel was being supported mid tilt by what appeared to be a layer of transparent white light that outlined the structure no matter what angle you looked at it from. All eyes sought out their savior, their doubtfully hopeful gazes landing upon a figure hovering in front of the Ferris wheel about three quarters up.
Yaoyorozu stared up at her classmate in awe. He was truly amazing. Despite everything he had told her about his inability to control his quirk, the sheer power and strength he displayed was something she couldn't even dream of achieving. Never had she felt such sheer astonishment in her life. Not from Todoroki's colossal ice wall during the obstacle course, not from Bakugou's devastating explosion during his match with Ururaka, not even from witnessing All-Might's limitless power at the USJ. Even still, the weight of the Ferris wheel seemed too much for him to handle alone. Even being supported by the full strength of (L/N)'s quirk, it slowly resumed its descent.
The screams renewed and the chaos and panic returned. The shadow of the wheel slowly began to fall upon Yaoyorozu and those around her when a sudden thought crossed her mind. Something he had briefly mentioned to her when she asked about his quirk.
"Sunlight." She whispered to herself. "He... he needs more sunlight!"
Her screams managed to reach Cloudbursts ears who was just barely clinging to consciousness. The hit she had taken from the cable had surely given her a concussion, probably even broke a few bones. But she had strength enough to carry out the girl's instructions. Turning her head to the sky, her eyes glowed a vivid blue as she chased away even the smallest remnant of any clouds.
His body shimmered as the sun's rays reached him. Some amount of strength returned to him, and the wheel once again came to a stop. Several pillars of light rose from the ground and connected with the wheel's outer frame. With what appeared to be a tremendous amount of effort on the boy's part, the wheel slowly began to right itself. Several people quickly pulled out their phones to take videos while citizen and hero alike watched in awe as this young man single handedly raised the sixty-ton wheel back to its original position.
All eyes were on him; brown, blue, and hazel, and a single set of tear-filled teal. Kendo wasn't sure why she had started crying, or when. All she knew was she had been right. She had always known that he could be a hero, and this right here, this was the proof. She watched in amazement as the photonic structures held the wheel in place, allowing him to weld the steel braces back together. Then several dozen glittering orbs appeared in the sky, waiting to carry the remaining passengers safely to the ground.
Cheers erupted from the assembled crowd as the last few citizens were returned to solid footing. Kendo was nearly trampled as onlookers rushed forwards. They swarmed beneath where he hovered in the air, just out of reach of their outstretched arms. They applauded and shouted their gratitude for the hero that had saved their lives. But all Kendo could do was stare fondly at the boy she was once so close to, who held a special place in her heart. It was only when she saw him waver that she returned to the present.
Of course, it must have exhausted him. Even with the boost from Cloudburst, he was completely spent. The light around his body flickered and faded before he fell completely, swallowed by the sea of bodies surrounding him. Kendo hurried forward, fighting her way through the throng to get closer to him, to make sure he was alright. But when she finally came to the forefront of the crowd, it was to find him already in the arms of someone else.
His head was rested in her lap as she produced a towel in her hand. Someone handed her a bottle of water which she used to wet the cloth before gently dabbing at his brow and cooling his forehead. Kendo watched as Yaoyorozu tended to (L/N), a twinge of jealousy playing at her heart. From where she stood on the outside of the circle that had formed around the two, she caught a glimpse of the raven-haired girl's eyes. It was feint, but present, nonetheless. A dim spark. One, Kendo was sure, that would one day grow to hold the same tenderness that her own eyes held when she and (L/N) were inseparable. A tenderness that perhaps, had not yet completely disappeared.
[My Hero Academia]
"And thanks to the valiant efforts of Endeavor, the number two hero, the Hero Killer's twisted crusade has finally come to an end. In other news, disaster was narrowly averted in Kanagawa Prefecture, thanks to the efforts of a brave young man from UA's hero course. We go now to Sara Kaneda for the story."
"Thank you, Haru. The Funakoshi Fairground is a traveling carnival founded over fifty years ago by Ken Funakoshi and has long been known for its astonishing attractions and remarkable rides. Over the past two weeks, the fair has been touring Japan in a special fundraising campaign to help support those who lost loved ones to the Hero Killer. During this special tour, Funakoshi unveiled its latest attraction; a seventy meter/two-hundred-thirty-foot Ferris wheel that seats two-hundred passengers.
"It was while the Funakoshi Fairground made its stop in Kanagawa Prefecture that catastrophe was narrowly avoided. Following is cell phone footage of the events that unfolded. Let's take a look."
"Have you guys seen this?" Kaminari asked as he watched the news footage on his phone. "(L/N)'s like, totally famous now."
Several other members of Class 1A rose from their seats and crowded around Denki's desk, watching his phone screen from over his shoulder.
"As you can see," the newscaster continued, "Pro Heroes Lionheart and Cloudburst aren't able to stop the wheel from falling. It looks like disaster when at the last second, a first-year student from UA's hero course saves the day. Stopping its descent, this young man singlehandedly rights the wheel which weighs over seventy tons when at full capacity. His heroic actions saved the lives of the two hundred passengers, and countless more civilians that would have undoubtedly been crushed.
"The thief, now identified as thirty-four-year-old Akio Tanaka, was apprehended..."
"Give me that!"
"Hey!" Kaminari yelped as Bakugou snatched his phone from him. "Give that back, man."
"Shut it!"
Bakugou scowled as he watched the footage of his classmate's heroics. A repeat of the same thirty seconds shown from what seemed like every possible angle. What, was one video not enough?
"Bet you think this makes you somethin' special, don't ya?" Bakugou growled, glaring towards the back of the class. "Well, you're wrong. I'm gonna be the number one hero someday, so don't think this makes you better than me! Got it?!"
(L/N) didn't respond. It was hard to say where his attention was, because even though it looked like he was staring right at Bakugou, the blindfold made it impossible to discern if he had really heard him. His lack of a response however, suggested that he hadn't.
"Hey, are you listening?" Bakugou yelled.
"Geez, cool it man." Kaminari said as he and Kirishima grabbed either of Bakugou's arms to stop him from marching over to (L/N). "I'm sure he heard you."
"All right everyone, quiet down and take your seats." Aizawa yawned as he entered the classroom. "Thanks to your internships, you've all had the chance to experience a small taste of what working as a Pro Hero entails. As I'm sure you've all learned, there's more to it than simply fighting villains. Public relations, community service, and business fundamentals are all important elements of being a pro. You've also likely learned that there are a number of steps leading up to any actual confrontations, such as patrols and investigations. The reality of it is, what you see on television is a small percent of what the job actually entails. That being said, that small percent is still the most important part of the job. How you conduct yourself during those few crucial moments might determine whether or not someone makes it home. The difference between acting and reacting is the difference between life and death. When it comes to saving lives, it's always a race against time."
