Chapter Twenty-Two

Jenny, Sam and Dean were back in the library, rummaging through everything they could on Jacob Karns. So far, everything they found came to a dead end, which only irritated Jenny more.

"Here's something, I think. Log book, Iowa State Penitentiary. Karns, Jacob. Personal affects: disposition thereof." Dean handed Jenny part of the record as he read through his part. Sam was reading his own record.

"Does it say anything on the hook?" Jenny asked, kicking her feet up into the desk in front of her as she opened a the record.

"Yeah, maybe. Upon execution, all earthly items shall be remanded to the prisoner's house of worship, St. Barnabas Church." Dean read, Sam

"Isn't that where Lori's father preaches" Dean nodded in confirmation. "Where Lori lives?"

"Well that explains why the Hook Man has been haunting reverends and reverends' daughters for the past 200 years."

"Yeah, but if the hook were at the church or Lori's house, don't you think someone might've seen it? I mean, a bloodstained... silver-handled hook?" Sam frowned as Jenny shrugged, flipping through more records. The three fell silent as they went deeper into their research.

After another hour or so, they were still searching when Jenny sat up, clearing her throat to get the two's attention.

"It says here the hook was melted down." She started, flipping the records to face Sam and Dean. "St. Barnabas was donated a silver hook in 1862... and they melted it down into something else." Jenny gave them a pained smile, the Winchester brothers dropping their heads in disappointment.

"Well, if the Hook Man is connected to Lori... Then maybe she has it?" Jenny suggested as Sam and Dean shrugged.

"It's possible." The group started packing the research away, getting ready to leave.

The trio had rolled up to St. Barnabas church

"Look, we can't take any chances. Anything silver goes in the fire." Dean stood up as Jenny did.

"Lori is still at the hospital. We'll have to break in." Jenny looked between the two boys.

"Alright. Take your pick." Dean gestured to his brother, who shrugged.

"I'll take the house." Sam pointed

"Then I guess Dean and I will check out the church." The three hunters got out, Jenny walking to the trunk and pulling out three bags, handing the brothers their own.

"Everything silver you can see." She rephrased as the two nodded, slamming the trunk shut. Jenny tossed her bag over her shoulder, walking with Dean to the church.

"Hey." Dean and Sam turned to face one another, Jenny frowning in confusion as Dean pointed at his brother. "Stay out of her underwear drawer." Jenny snickered as she grabbed Dean, the two walking into the church.

"Sam isn't that messed in the head, Dean." Jenny whispered as she turned on her flashlight, Dean shrugging.

"You never know." The two walked down opposite ends of the church, shoving whatever they saw as silver into their bags.

Jenny and Dean met back up at the end of the aisle in front of the Jesus statue, waving their bags to one another. "That everything on your side?"

"Everything that looks like silver." The two nodded, walking down to the basement. The two started a fire in an opening, tossing everything they found into the fire as Sam arrived.

"I got everything that even looked like silver." He said as Dean shrugged, taking the bag.

"Better safe than sorry." He smiled, starting to toss silverware and other items that appeared to be silver into the fire.

The three suddenly paused when dust fell onto Jenny's shoulder, footsteps echoing upstairs. Dean whipped out his gun, gesturing for the three to follow him back upstairs.

The tiptoed their way up the stairs, Sam pausing, and causing Dean to nearly bump into his brother. Jenny looked over the younger Winchester's shoulder at the sound of crying, seeing Lori sitting in front of the statue.

Dean nudged Jenny, the two disappearing back downstairs as Sam walked towards the girl. "Okay. I think that's all of the silver. Hopefully Captain Hook learns that punishment isn't always about murder." Jenny leaned against the wall as Dean nodded, staring at the fire, watching the silver melt.

There were a few moments of silence before Jenny gestured to Dean's hand. "How's your hand?" She asked, crossing her arms as Dean looked down at his knuckles, which were already scabbing.

"I've had worse." He smiled as Jenny chuckled.

"Haven't we all..." She trailed off, turning her head to the stairs as she heard a loud crash, looking to Dean, whose eyes were wide.

Jenny grabbed the shotgun resting against the wall next to her, running up the stairs with Dean just in time to see Sam get thrown across the room, Lori screaming.

"Sam, drop!" Jenny raised the shotgun at the Hook Man. Sam dropped to the ground as she pulled the trigger, and the Hook Man disappeared into a cloud of dust.

"I thought we got all of the silver?" Sam yelled as Jenny and Dean started looking around, sure that they had grabbed everything.

"We got all the silver in here!" Jenny lowered the shotgun in confusion, shaking her head.

"Well, maybe we missed something!" Jenny turned to Dean, waving her hands around.

"Lori, where did you get that necklace?" Dean and Jenny turned to Lori, staring at the necklace around her throat.

"My dad gave it to me?" She answered with a confused frown.

"Where did it come from?" Jenny asked, still clutching the shotgun and probably horrifying the blonde girl.

"He said it was a church heirloom. He gave it to me—"

"Is it silver?!" The three interrupted as Lori nodded quickly. Sam rushed over and yanked it off of Lori, throwing it to Dean.

Dean went to turn around, freezing as a long  scratch started appearing on the wall. "Jenny!" He yelled, the woman spinning around and cocked the gun.

Dean ran downstairs as Jenny shot at the scratch mark, quickly reloading it with more rock salt. Jenny ran for cover when she clearly missed, hearing Lori's cries and looked over the chairs, seeing the blonde and Sam stuck in a corner as the Hook Man stalked towards them slowly.

Jenny shot back up, aiming the shotgun away from Lori and Sam, still directly at The Hook Man. Before she could shoot, she paused, watching as the Hook Man started melting away, dropping her shotgun in relief as Dean ran back up, making sure the spirit was finally gone before Jenny sat down on the bench, huffing in relief.

Jenny sat next to Dean as she had finally talked him into letting the paramedic bandage his hand, Sam sitting in the ambulance as they bandaged up his arm.

"And you're sure you aren't injured, miss?" The paramedic asked as Jenny smiled and shook her head.

"Nope. For the first time, I'm not the one that needs to be patched up." The paramedic nodded before calling over their partner, Jenny and Dean walking over to the sheriff again.

"And you saw him, too? The man with the hook?" The sheriff asked as Jenny nodded, giving the man a tight-lipped smile.

"Yes, I told you, we all saw him. We fought him off—" Dean raised his bandages hand "—and then he ran."

"And that's all?"

"Yes, that's all."

"Alright. You two and your brother—"

"Don't worry, sir. We're leaving." Jenny daisies her hands in defense before she and Dean walked away, and Dean looked down at his hand again.

"This— unnecessary." He frowned, going to rip the bandage off. Jenny grabbed his wrist, shaking it.

"Let the damn thing heal properly. You got enough scars from unnecessary fights." Jenny frowned at Dean, who glared.

"That fight wasn't unnecessary." He grumbled, shaking her hand off of his wrist. "It was a completely, totally valid reason to beat up a guy." Jenny hummed, nodding as the two walked to the Impala. Jenny hopped in the front seat, looking at Dean.

"You don't need to fight my battles, Dean." He stayed quiet, eyes flickering to the side-view mirror to watch his brother and Lori talk. Jenny frowned at the older Winchester, slapping his shoulder.

"Hey!" He snapped around to face her, frowning.

"I'm being serious, Dean. If I need your help, I'll tell you." The two stared at one another for what felt like an eternity before Sam finally slid into the back seat, Dean turning to look at him.

His eyes flickered between his brother and Jenny, sighing quietly. "We could stay?" He suggested. For a moment, Jenny was surprised. She wasn't expecting Dean to say something like that. Not when they were still searching for John.

Sam shook his head slowly, looking out the window at Lori, and gave her a soft smile. Dean turned to Jenny, raising his brows. "Jen?"

She stayed quiet. She wished for nothing more than to live a normal life. To not have to deal with murdering monsters or saving people from being sacrificed all the time. To actually live in a home, have her own bed.

But she knew this was her life. This is what she was meant to be. Her Apple Pie life wasn't here yet. And for now... She wasn't sure if it would ever come.

Jenny shook her head, Dean driving away from a promising ending to their horrible story.
