Chapter Thirty-Eight

Jenny, Sam and Dean sat at the round table in silence. It had been like that for the last five minutes since Sam had asked the dumb "it's THE grim reaper" question. Because no. It wasn't.

"You think he shoulda been working the whole black robe thing?....You said it yourself that the clock stopped right? Reapers stop time. And you can only see 'em when they're coming at you which is why I could see it and you couldn't." Dean informed as Jenny leaned back in her chair, trying to think of how Roy was controlling the Reaper. Her eyes widened in realization.

"There's nothing else it could be Sam. The question is how is Roy controlling the damn thing?" Dean scratched his head as Jenny continued to stare off.

"The cross." She and Sam spoke in unison, the two looking at one another for a moment as Dean rolled his eyes.

"How do you guys always know what the fuck is going on?" He complained as Jenny shrugged, smirking as she played with the corner of a paper.

"Guess you didn't read as much."

"I don't read."

"My point exactly—"

"Guys." Jenny and Dean turned to Sam, who was frowning at them. He held out a card, flipping it around to show them. Death.

"A tarot reading? Damn, you really are playing this psychic thing out." Jenny snorted, Sam glaring at her.

"A tarot dates back to the early christian era, right, when some priests were still using magic? And a few of them veered into the dark stuff? Necromancy and how to push death away, how to cause it?" Jenny crossed her arms, shrugging.

"Well, yes. So, what. Roy is a witch?" Dean rose from his chair, setting his cup in the sink then leaned against it.

"If he is he's riding the whirlwind. It's like putting a dog leash on a great white." Sam frowned as he set the tarot card down. Dean cleared his throat, sighing.

"Then we need to stop Roy." Jenny looked over at him, eyes wide.

"How?" Sam asked, turning around to face his brother.

"Dean—"

"The guy is playing God, Jen. He's deciding whose dying, whose living. That's a monster in my book." Dean crossed his arms as Sam whipped around to face Jen.

"Wait— You want to kill Roy? Dean, if we do that— we're no better than he is." Sam argued as Jenny gestured to the younger Winchester, slapping her hand in the table.

"Sam is right, Dean. We aren't killing Roy." Dean frowned at the two, shaking his head. "Look. If Roy is using some dark magic to keep use the reaper like a kill dog... Then there's gotta be something to break him free, right?" Dean rolled his eyes, nodding slowly.

✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧

Dean tried to drive slowly down the potholes and gravelly road, pulling back up to the tent. An odd shiver ran up Jenny's spine, causing her to shudder.

"Alright." Dean started as the three got out of the impala. "If Roy is using magic, then there should be a spell book. You guys go find it, I'll try and stall Roy."

"We should hurry. The service starts in fifteen." Jenny and Sam walked off as Dean went to the tent.

"Okay. Where first?" Sam asked as Jenny pointed to a board by the tent covered in articles. "Yeah. That seems odd."

The two rushed over to the board, Jenny grabbing one of the articles and ripping it off. She frowned, looking behind Sam as she handed it to him. "Look. It's the protestor."

Sam read the article before turning around to see the protestor there once again, yelling about Roy being a fraud. "Why do you think he's on the board?"

The two stood in silence for a moment before their eyes widened im at the same time, looking to one another.

"Call Dean." Sam started pacing to the protestor as Jenny pulled out her phone, clicking Dean's cell.

After a few seconds, he answered. "What did you find?"

"Keep stalling Roy. Sam and I think he's going after the protestor next."

"The protestor? You mean the guy in the parking lot?"

"Yeah. He's going after people he sees as immoral. Keep Roy from healing people." Dean hung up his phone, Jenny looking to see Sam and the man had disappeared. She spun around in confusion. "Shit."

Jenny started to run off, nearly slamming into Sue Ann. "Oh! Sorry, ma'am." Sue Ann smiled, nodding.

"It's alright dear. Just— oh. What chya doin' with that?" She gestured to the article in Jenny's hand.

"This? Oh, nothing. Just caught my interest." Sue Ann nodded slowly.

"Well. I hope he doesn't interest you too much. He's so negative. Spiteful. Immoral." Sue Ann spat as Jenny nodded slowly.

"Right... Well— I think I should go thank Roy for saving my uh— my boyfriend." Jenny smiled, patting Sue on the shoulder before running off. "Shit shit shit shit shit— SHIT!" Jenny slammed into Sam as he rounded a corner. "Why am I running into so many people?!"

"Did you find David? I lost him in the car park." Jenny shook her head, crushing up the paper as Sam groaned in frustration.

"HELP ME!"

Sam and Jenny whipped their heads around and faced the car park, sprinting into the lanes as they listened to David screaming for help.

"Help!" Jenny turned around as the man tackled her to the ground, scrambling up.

"Jesus people stop slamming into me!" She yelled, eyes widening as she saw a grey man in a suit slowly prowling to David. "Sam! I see him!"

"What?!" Sam asked with wide eyes as Jenny's told up, pointing at the Reaper.

"Right there! Run!" She slapped David and he bolted off, Jenny and Sam following as her phone started to ring. They came to a pause as she answered the phone, sighing in relief as she turned around. People started scrambling out of the tent.

"You'll be okay, David. It's over." David rested against a car in relief as Jenny turned back around, her eyes widening in shock as the Reaper stood in front of David. "Oh boy." She muttered.

The Reaper cut David's scream off by grabbing his throat and Sam spun around. "David!"

David slapped at the Reaper's wrist as he gasped for air. Jenny went for her gun, pausing when she knew it wouldn't do anything to a Reaper. David's eyes darted around as he coughed, begging for help.

Suddenly the Reaper let David go. He stumbled to the ground, grasping his throat as she coughed aggressively. Jenny looked over at Sam, then to the Reaper, who disappeared

"Thanks for the help." David snapped quietly as Jenny gave him a sarcastic nod.

"Why did it come back?" Sam asked as Jenny looked to the tent, noticing Dean getting dragged out by two cops, Sue Ann following right behind.

"Maybe it's not Roy doing this."

✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧

"Sue Ann is doing this?" Sam frowned as Jenny nodded. The trio was back at the motel, sitting at the same table again.

"I don't think he has any idea what his wife's doing." Dean commented, crossing his arms with a solemn look.

"Well, I found this." Sam pulled out a book from his bag, handing it to Dean. "Hidden in their library. It's ancient. Written by a priest who went dark side. There's a binding spell in here for trapping a reaper."

"Must be a hell of a spell."

"Yeah. You gotta build a black alter with seriously dark stuff. Bones, human blood— Messed up shit." Jenny spoke and leaned back in her chair, looking at the two boys.

"Desperate. Her husband was dying, she didn't have anything to save him. She was using the binding spell to keep the reaper away from Roy."

"She's literally cheating death." Jenny sighed, tapping her fingers.

"Yeah but Roy's alive, so why is she still using the spell?" Dean raised a brow, tilting his head.

"Right. To force the reaper to kill people she thinks are immoral." Sam sighed as Jenny hummed.

"So, kill people and keep her husband. Sounds so romantic." She joked, Sam shooting her a soft glare. "Look. We need to find whatever Sue Ann is using and break it. Stop the curse."

"You know... Sue Ann had a coptic cross like this." Dean said as he raised a small cross up to show Sam and Jenny. "When she dropped it the reaper backed off."

"So you think we gotta find the cross or destroy the alter?"

"Maybe both. Whatever we do we better do it soon, or he's healing Layla tonight." Jenny frowned solemnly, looking over at Dean.

"Layla... That's the girl with the brain tumor, right?" Dean nodded slowly as Jenny fell silent. A tug at her heart, and Jenny stood up. "Okay.. Let's stop the Reaper."

✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧

The trio rolled up to Roy's home and tent, Dean sighing quietly as he turned the Impala off. "That's Layla's car." Sam mumbled, Dean nodded.

"Hopefully Roy hasn't started yet." Jenny commented, giving the boys a half-truth. "Let's go—"

"You know... if Roy had picked Layla instead of me she wouldn't be here right now. And if she's not healed tonight— she's gonna die in a coupla months." Jenny paused and turned to Dean.

Sam looked over at Jenny, not finding the words Dean needed to hear. She took in a soft breath, placing a comforting hand on Dean's shoulder. He didn't turn to her.

"What Layla is going through... It's awful. She doesn't deserve it. But Dean... We said it ourselves. People can't play God. They can't pick and choose who lives and dies because of immorality." Dean looked over his shoulder at her, and Jenny sighed quietly. The trio sat in silence before Dean got out of the car, Jenny and Sam following.

The three crept to the tent, peeking inside as Roy started to speak. Jenny looked around, squinting. "Where's Sue Ann?" Sam asked as Dean and Jenny shrugged, not spotting her.

"The house." Dean whispered, the three sneaking away and running towards the house. Dean paused, causing Jenny and Sam to stop. Dean started pushing the two along. "You guys find Sue Ann, I'll catch up."

"Dean what are you—" Jenny was cut off as Dean ran back towards the tent, stopping in front of two cops.

"Hey!" Dean yelled, alerting the two. "You gonna out that fear of God in me?" The cops dropped their coffees, the three breaking into a sprint. Jenny and Sam shared a confused look before running back to the house.

The two ran up the stairs, looking around the house that was pitch black. A light caught their attention, presumably from a basement. The two ran around to the basement, sliding the doors open and slowly crept down.

The two walked up to a candle lit alter, Jenny's eyes widening to see a traffic camera photo of Dean, before he was healed, pinned to the wall and covered in blood.

"Holy shi—"

"I gave your brother life." Sam and Jenny spun around to see Sue Ann. "I can take it away." Jenny jumped at Sue Ann, tackling her to the ground as Sam knocked the alter over. Jenny was shaking Sue Ann violently, slamming her against the concrete.

"Jenny!" Sam pulled the woman off of Sue Ann, only for Jenny to kick the older woman square in the face. Sue Ann groaned, spitting out blood onto the floor and stood up. Jenny and Sam looked at the basement exit.

"Good bye, Sam and Jenny." The woman ran up the stairs, the two hunters rushing to follow her, but it was too late. Sue Ann knocked the doors down, securing it with a beam just as they reached it. It slammed into Sam's head, causing him to yell in pain as Jenny pushed herself against the door.

"Dammit!" Jenny yelled, hitting her fist against the door. "Dean!" It was no use to yell for him, he was probably too far away.

Sam looked around, running down the stairs and grabbing a block of wood, walking to a boarded up window. He slammed it against the glass, shattering it. Jenny ran over next to Sam, who took off his flannel and threw it over the broken glass. He lifted Jenny up, seeing as there was no way for her to reach it without a struggle, and she climbed out.

"I'll find Sue Ann, you find Dean." Sam ordered and Jenny nodded, sprinting off to find the older Winchester.

After barely a few moments, Jenny skid to a halt, spitting Dean falling to his knees, eyes glazed over like when he had been healed, but it looked more painful than helpful.

Jenny ran at him as he fell to the ground gasping for air. Scratching her knees up as she slid next to him. "Dean? Dean can you hear me?" He coughed, eyes slowly returning to normal. Jenny cupped his face in her hands, bringing him into a tight, one-sided hug. "Jesus Christ." She mumbled, kissing the top of his head.

After a few minutes of laying there, Jenny finally helped Dean stand up. She dusted the dirt and gravel off of his shirt. "You alright?" She asked, and he shrugged.

"I've had better days." Another moment. Dean hummed, pulling Jenny into a hug that she quickly returned. "But I'm okay."

"Good. Because this was such a fantastic week." She smiled sarcastically as Dean scoffed, shaking his head as the two started walking to the impala.

"Yeah. The best." The two met Sam at the Impala, who had a disappointed look on his face.

"Sam?" Jenny frowned, the younger Winchester slowly looked up.

"The Reaper... It killed Sue Ann." Jenny and Dean shared a look before shrugging it off. "Guys, really?"

"Hey. You try and use a Reaper to kill and heal, see what happens." Sam shook his head, getting into the car. Jenny and Dean looked over to the tent, noticing Layla crying.

The two glanced at each other before getting into the car, knowing they'll forget about this day soon enough.
