Chapter Nine

warning: Jenny is low-key dumb towards the end but for good reason so I don't wanna hear it

Jenny stood next to Dean as he and Sam talked to Andrea.

"He hasn't talked to anyone, even me. Not since his fathers accident." Andrea looked like she was on the verge of tears, Dean clicking his tongue.

"Yeah... We heard. Sorry." Dean gave her a solemn glance as she nodded.

"What did the doctors say?" Sam asked, looking over at Lucas.

"That it's some kind of post-traumatic stress."

"That can't be easy. For either of you." Sam continued as Andrea scoffed a laugh, sniffling.

"We moved in with my dad. He helps out a lot. It's just...when I think about what Lucas went through, what he saw..." There was a pause from the group.

"Kids are strong. You'd be surprised by what they can deal with." Dean smiled, and Lucas ran over to the group, holding a paper.

"You know, he used to have such life. He was hard to keep up with, to tell you the truth. Now he just sits there. Drawing those pictures, playing with those army men. I just wish— Hey sweetie." Andrea smiled softly at her son, who tugged on Jenny's coat. The woman looked down, taking the paper he handed her.

"Hey. Thanks, Lucas." She smiled at the boy, who then walked back to the bench. Jenny turned to Dean, looking down to see the drawing was the Carlton house.

Jenny paused, slowly looking back at Lucas with a soft frown.

Dean and Jenny were sitting down on the bed together, their arms barely touching as Dean looked over her shoulder at the newspaper in her hand, scanning over the lines. Sam walked into the motel a few moments later, sighing loudly.

"I think we can rule out Nessie." The two in the bed looked over at the younger Winchester with a confused frown.

"Why's that?" Jenny asked, setting the newspaper on the nightstand.

"I just drove past the Carlton house. There was an ambulance there. Will Carlton is dead." Jenny's eyes widened in shock, sitting up quickly.

"What?"

"He drowned?" Dean asked as Sam nodded.

"In the sink." Dean looked at Jenny, who slowly looked over at the sink in the bathroom with mild concern.

"What the hell? So you're right, this isn't a creature. We're dealing with something else." Dean stated-the-obvious, getting off the bed.

"Water wraith?" Jenny wondered, looking at the boys. "Or maybe a demon. It has to be something that lives in the lake, right?"

"It's coming from only one source." Sam said, sitting down at the table. Jenny's phone buzzed on the nightstand.

"The lake." Dean mumbled, and Jenny got off of the bed, grabbing her phone.

"It would explain the deaths going up by 100. Its draining and wants to finish what it started." She said, looking down at her phone as she typed away.

"It'll be dry in a few months. Whatever this thing is, whatever it wants, it's running out of time." Sam began pacing back and forth, Jenny slipping her phone back in her pocket.

"And if it can get through the pipes, it can get to anyone, almost anywhere.... This is going to happen again unless we stop it." Dean looked to Jenny as if she had an answer, but she just gave him a puzzled look.

"And we do know one other thing for sure. We know this has got something to do with Bill Carlton." Sam stated, shrugging as he scratched the back of his neck.

"It's taken two of his kids." Jenny shrugged, walking back to the nightstand and picked up the newspaper. "Maybe he's next."

"And I've been asking around. Lucas's dad, Chris—Bill Carlton's godson." Dean chuckled softly, shaking his head at Sam's words.

"Let's go pay Mr. Carlton a visit."

✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧

Jenny, Sam and Dean walked down to the dock, Bill Carlton sitting on a bench, staring out into the lake.

"Mr. Carlton?" Sam asked in a low voice, the older man turning to look at the three. "We'd like to ask you a few questions, if you don't mind."

"We're from the Department—"

"I don't care where you lot are from. I've answered enough questions today." Bill interrupted Dean, Jenny shifting awkwardly, as she looked at the man.

"Your son said he saw something in that lake."Sam started, Bill looked back at the lake with a somber expression. "What about you? You ever see anything out there? Mr. Carlton, Sophie's drowning and Will's death—we think there might be a connection to you or your family."

"My children are gone. It's...it's worse than dying. Go away. Please." Bill begged, his voice breaking slightly as the trio backed away and went back to the car.

Sam leaned on the Impala, shoving his hands in his pockets. "What do you think?"

"I think the man has been through enough these past few months. He's mourning." Jenny shrugged, rolling on her heels as Dean clicked his tongue.

"I think he's not telling us something." Jenny looked back down at the dock, staring at Bill. The man didn't move.

"So now what?" Sam asked, pausing when Jenny went still. After noticing the sudden silence, Dean turned to look at the girl, who was staring at the house behind them.

"Jen?" Dean asked in a concerned tone, looking at her.

"I think Bill isn't the only one that knows something." Jenny turned back to the boys. "I need to talk to Lucas."

✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧

At Jack Devin's house, Jenny pounded on the door, sticking her hands back in her pockets as Sam and Dean stood behind her, looking around.

A few minutes passed. Jenny went to knock on the door again, Andrea opening it quickly. Jenny's neutral expression turned into a soft smile, dropping her hand. "Hey, Andrea."

"What are you guys doing here?" She asked with a frown. Jenny cleared her throat.

"I need to talk to Lucas, if that's alright?" Andrea stayed silent for a moment before unlocking the screen door, letting them in. She lead them up the stairs of her house, sighing.

"I don't know what good it will do you. He won't talk to anyone." She said as Jenny nodded.

"I know. But... If he even draws something, I really think it will help us find out what's going on." Andrea paused and turned to the three.

"My husband, the others, they just drowned. That's all." Her tone had turned cold, Jenny looking away awkwardly.

"I know that— That it might seem that way, Andrea. But— we think more people might get hurt if someone doesn't start helping us. Just a few minutes is all I need." Jenny looked through a doorway to see Lucas coloring, toy soldiers surrounded him.

Andrea sighed quietly, waving her hands before walking off. Jenny turned to Dean and Sam, who followed Andrea downstairs. Jenny walked into Lucas' room, noticing he had drawn two more red bicycles.

"Hey Lucas. You remember me? I don't know if I said my name... I'm Jennifer." She knelt down next to the boy, who ignored her. "You can call me Jenny if you want to."

Lucas stayed quiet, drawing someone in a lake. The woman dug through her pocket, pulling out the house drawing. "It would really help me and my friends if you told me why you drew this." She showed Lucas the house, his eyes flickering over for barely a moment before he started drawing again. Jenny sighed quietly.

"Lucas... I know that you're probably scared of what you saw. And—And that's okay. It's okay to be scared. But it helps if you talk to people. Friends.. Family. Dean and Sam... They're my friends. The three of us have really been through it. But we have each other to talk to. And— And well... You got me, buddy." Lucas didn't say anything. "You can talk to me. I won't judge you."

Lucas dropped his crayon, handing Jenny the drawing. A white church, a yellow house, a boy with a blue baseball cap and a red bicycle in front of a wooden fence drawn on the paper. Jenny smiled softly, looking at Lucas, who stared at her.

"Thanks, Lucas."

The boy went back to drawing.

✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧

Dean and Jenny sat in the front of the Impala as Sam sat in the back, the girl looking out through the window occasionally, then looked back at the drawing.

"Andrea said the kid never drew like that till his dad died." Dean mentioned as Jenny looked at the drawing of the boy, frowning

"There are cases—going through a traumatic experience could make people more sensitive to premonitions, psychic tendencies." Sam explained, pulling out his phone before tucking it away again.

"Lucas must have tapped into whatever is out here when his dad died. It's only a matter of time before someone is next... We gotta find this house." Jenny shook the paper as Dean fixed his grip on the steering wheel, looking around.

"The only problem is there's about a thousand yellow two-stories in this county alone." Dean sighed as Jenny shrugged, pointing to the church.

"You wanna bet there's only a few churches like that around here?" Jenny asked, turning to look at Dean with a sly smirk.

"Oh, Miss High school Drop-Out thinks she's so smart." He joked as Jenny faked a laugh, Sam chuckled from the back.

"Jerks." She rolled her eyes playfully as Sam and Dean smirked.

"Bitch." They replied in unison. The three chuckled.

✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧

Dean pulled up to a yellow two-story home with a church behind it. Jenny raised the picture up so Sam and Dean could get a look before lowering her hand. "Yahtzee." Jenny mumbled before getting out of the car, Sam and Dean following.

The three walked up to the door, Jenny ringing the bell. After a few minutes of waiting, an old lady answered. "Hello, ma'am. We're from the Wildlife Department. We'd just like to ask you a few questions." Jenny smiled as the old woman nodded, letting them in.

"Sorry for the mess. I don't get much company." The woman apologized as Jenny hummed.

"It's no problem." Sam said as Jenny walked over to one side of the house.

"We're sorry to bother you, ma'am... but does a little boy live here, by chance? He might wear a blue ball cap, has a red bicycle." Dean asked as the lady paused, turning around to face a mantle.

"No sir. Not for a very long time. Peter's been gone for thirty-five years now." The three turned to look at one another, all looking at a picture on a side table at the same time. "The police never—I never had any idea what happened. He just disappeared." The woman explained as Jenny's heart tugged for her.

Sam nudged Jenny, gesturing to a bunch of little toy soldiers next to the picture. Jenny then nudged Dean, doing the same.

"Losing him—you know, it's...it's worse than dying." The old woman's voice broke, Jenny frowned solemnly. "He was supposed to ride his bike straight home after school, and he never showed up."

Dean walked over to a mirror, plucking a photo of two boys out of the corner and turned it around. He walked back over to Sam and Jenny, showing it to them.

Bill Carlton and Peter Sweeney. 1970.

Jenny's eyes widened as she looked at Dean, who gave her the same look.

✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧

"So, this little boy Peter Sweeney vanishes, and this is all connected to Bill Carlton somehow." Sam suggested as Jenny nodded from the back, seat, pressing herself against the door, leg bouncing up and down nervously.

"Yeah, Bill sure as hell seems to be hiding something, huh?" Dean pondered, two hands gripping the steering wheel.

"And Bill, the people he loves, they're all getting punished." Sam stated, clearing his throat softly.

"So what if Bill did something to Peter?" Dean asked, looking at Jenny through the rear view mirror.

"Maybe Bill killed him." Jenny spoke up, and Sam nodded.

"Peter's spirit would be furious. It'd want revenge. It's possible." Dean sighed as he rounded the corner.

"Vengeful spirit. They always go after the people that hurt them before they died... Or if they can't get to them..."

"Their family." Sam ended Jenny's sentence as the trio pulled back up to the Carlton house, Jenny quick to get out of the Impala before Dean could come to a complete stop, rushing around the house with a nervous look.

"Jenny?" Sam called out as he got out of the car, Dean and him chasing after her.

Jenny noticed Bill getting in his boat, her eyes widening as she started booking it down to the dock. "Mr. Carlton!" She screamed, the man ignoring her as he revels up the boat. "Mr. Carlton stop!"

The boat started driving off as Jenny blasted down the dock, Dean and Sam far behind her.

"Jen! Jennifer stop!" Dean yelled as he raced down after her, the girl ignoring him as she leaped off the dock, collapsing in the back of the boat. Bill spun around, shaking his head.

"What are you doing?!" He yelled as she pushed him behind her, grabbing the wheel.

"Thinking of a way to save your— oh shit." Jenny's heart plummeted as the water started to rise up.

"Jennifer!" Sam yelled from the dock, Jenny attempting to turn the boat around as Bill just hopped over.

"Bill no—!" Jenny gasped as she went down with the boat, her eyes shooting open to see Bill getting dragged down by something horrifying.

She swam down after, grabbing his arm and attempting to free him from Peter's grip. Instead, Bill grabbed a knife from his pocket, slashing her arm. Jenny yelped in pain, letting go and watching as Bill and Peter sunk down together.

Dean and Sam, however, we're panicking as they looked all around the lake. Sam ran his hands through his hair frantically, Dean taking short and hard breaths.

"Jennifer!" Dean cried out, pacing back and forth. "Oh god." He whispered, thinking— knowing that she was gone.

Jenny broke through the surface, gasping for air, as she looked around. "Dammit! Fucking dammit!" She yelled in anger, splashing as Dean practically leaped for relief.

Jenny swam back quickly, not wanting to spend another moment in that lake in fear she might be next. She swam towards the shore, walking about as Dean and Sam ran to her.

"What the fuck where you thinking, Jennifer?!" Dean yelled as she ringed her jacket from the water, scowling.

"Obviously, nothing, Dean. I don't want to hear it." She shrugged off her jacket, Sam's eyes widening as he pointed at her arm.

"Jenny you're bleeding." Dean's eyes shot down to the long laceration on her arm, grabbing her wrist.

"Ow! Jesus would it kill you to be gentle?" Jenny hissed in pain as Dean glared at her. "Bill slashed me. It— he was fine with dying."

"Oh, and you were, too?" Dean asked in a harsh tone as Sam backed away again, seeming to go look for bandages. "Jesus, Jenny, you're always doing this!"

"What? Trying to save people? Last time I checked, Dean, that's kinda what we do!" She yelled, started to walk away. Dean followed her with angry stomps next to her.

"Yes. We save people. But we don't make idiotic decisions that could actually kill us!" He frowned as Jenny laughed, shaking her head.

"While I do care about your concern for my well-being, Dean, I knew I would be fine. Peter wasn't going to go after me. I wasn't the one he wanted."

"Maybe not, but you got in the way. He would have take you with if it weren't for Bill." Jenny paused, standing in front of Dean, who practically slammed into her. He took a small step back, looking down at the girl.

"I don't need you berating me every time I make a decision that could save someone, Dean. That's why I do this. Not just to kill some stupid fucking monsters or a ghost or two, but to help people. To save them from being next. I'm going to get in the way of every case we take on. And whether I choose to risk my life or not? That's my decision. Not yours." Dean clenched his jaw as his eyes flashed between hers, dropping his head before looking back up at her.

And he hugged her tightly.

Jenny paused in confusion, eyes wide. "Dean? I'm uh— Kind if arguing with you... Arguments don't usually end with hugs."

"I know... I just— I don't want to lose you." He whispered as Jenny held her frown. Dean let go of her, looking into the girls brown eyes. "I can't keep letting you risk your life like that, Jen. I don't want this life to be the way you die."

Jenny continued to stare at Dean in shock before leaning forward slightly. "Trust me, Dean. This won't be how I die." The two stood in silence, Dean's eyes flickered down to her lips for barely a second.

"I found some bandages!" Sam ran back to them, Dean letting go of Jenny quickly as the younger Winchester handed her a large roll of gauze.

"Oh— right.. Thanks Sam." The boy nodded with a soft smile as he looked at Dean, then down at his damp shirt with a frown. Jenny felt a blush rise up in her cheeks, Dean scratched his neck sheepishly.

"Well... Um.." Jenny looked between Dean and Sam, chuckled awkwardly. "Let's kill this spirit."
