Chapter Fourty-Eight

THEN
ten years ago

Jennifer's birthday was just around the corner. At times like this, she wished her family was with her. And since she didn't have friends for a sweet 16, her and Bobby just stayed up all night watching Nightmare on Elm Street and other horror-related movies they could laugh at for not being accurate in the slightest.

The night before she was going to turn seventeen, a letter came in the mail addressed to her. Neither her or Bobby had a clue as to who it could be from, since she didn't go to school and therefore, never gave her address to anyone she was a stranger to.

She didn't recognize the handwriting, but was silently hoping it was Sam or Dean, or maybe both since she hadn't seen them in a few weeks. But, upon reading the first word, her eyes were wide with shock.

It was her brother. The brother that hasn't attempted to find her, or made the decision to contact her since he ran off after their grandma died.

Jenny-B.
I know it's been a while. And I know you probably hate me for leaving. But I figured you might want to know if I was dead or not. If this letter ever gets to you, then I probably am. I'm writing this one year after you went to live with Bobby Singer. I don't know what he's teaching you, but I hope you know about the supernatural. I found a Hunter a few weeks ago, after almost getting killed by a wendigo, whatever the hell that it, and he's been teaching me how to hunt. If this message has gotten to you, there will be another letter in the mail for you... soon. I'm not to sure when. But I want you to know, I love you. And I'm sorry for what I've done. I hope that you'll forgive me for what I' m going to do.
Your brother, Nate

And for the last ten years, that had been the only thing that reminded Jenny she had a brother. And his name has been remembered as Nathaniel Price. A warrior that didn't stop fighting.

A warrior that hasn't stopped fighting.

Considering the fact that Jenny had never talked about a brother or ever brought up the name, Sam and Dean had come to the conclusion that it was just as hard of a topic to talk about as their mothers death was. Though Jenny wasn't sure if her brother was dead or not, she'd rather assume he was dead since she never got that second letter.

Now, the trio had bought some very poorly made costumes to disguise themselves as employees of an alarm system company. Dean was wearing a jean hat backwards, Jenny having her ponytail sticking through the hole in the back, looking at herself in the mirror.

"Do you think I should get bangs?" She asked, flipping her ponytail over her head and across her forehead, playing around with it. Dean peeked around from the trunk, frowning at her.

"I don't think that's what we should be worried about right now." Sam commented from the other side of the car. Jenny stood up straight, fixing her ponytail and turned to Sam.

"Right. Anyways, does this thing make my ass look small?" She turned around and looked down in the side mirror, frowning as Sam and Dean shared a look.

"Nope. Looks great." Dean answered, shutting the trunk of the car as Jenny frowned at him.

"Thank you for the sarcastic input." She took the tool box from Dean, walking towards the apartment. The Winchester brothers followed suit, fixing their costumes.

"I feel like a high school drama dork." Dean complained, scratching at his arms. He smiled, turning to his brother. "What was that play that you did? What was it—"

"Our Town." Jenny smiled at the memory of being invited to see Sam in a play. Dean chuckled.

"Yeah, you were good, it was cute." Sam shot the two a glare.

"Look, you wanna pull this off or not?"

"I'm just sayin', these outfits cost hard-earned money, okay?" Dean continued, gesturing to his outfit.

"Whose?" Sam frowned.

"Ours. You think credit card fraud is easy?" Jenny snorted as they walked up to the apartment complex.

"Thank you for letting us look around." Sam told the landlady as they walked down the hallway. The woman nodded, h licking the closed off door.

"Well, the police said they were done with the place, so..." The three walked in, Jenny shutting the door and frowning when she noticed the chain was broken. Following the three into the living room, spots of blood covered the carpet. "You guys said you were with the alarm company? Why are there uh— three of you?"

"Boss says it's better with three on the job. Good to have an extra set of eyes." Jenny gestured to her eyeballs with a smile. "Plus... I'm just better than them."

"Oh no you aren't—"

"Course I am." Jenny interrupted Dean, still looking at the landlady, who smiled awkwardly. Dean rolled his eyes.

"Right...Well, no offense, but your alarm's about as useful as boobs on a man." Jenny, Dean and Sam shared an odd look.

"And that's why we're here. To see what went wrong and stop it from happening again." Dean smiled, the landlady nodding, still unsure.

"Now, ma'am, you found the body?" Sam asked, she nodded.

"Right after it happened?" Jenny questioned, stepping away from the small group.

"No. Few days later. Meredith's work called—she hadn't shown up. I knocked on the door. That's when I noticed the smell."

"Any windows open? Any sign of break-in?" Dean asked, Jenny setting the toolbox down with a thunk.

"No, windows were locked, front door was bolted. Chain was on the door, we had to cut it just to get in."

"And the alarm was still on?"

"Like I said, bang-up job your company's doin'." Jenny hummed in amusement.

"Mmhmm. You see any overturned furniture, broken glass, signs of struggle?" Dean asked and the landlady shook her head.

"Everything was in perfect condition—except Meredith." The landlady gave them a horrified expression and Jenny looked over.

"And what condition was Meredith in?" She walked back over to the group
Meredith was all over. In pieces. The guy who killed her must have been some kind of a whackjob. But I tell you, if I didn't know any better, I'd have said a wild animal did it." Jenny looked at Sam and Dean, who seemed to have the same expression on her face.

"Ma'am, do you mind if we take some time? Give this place a once-over?" Sam asked as the landlady started to walk away.

"Knock yourselves out."

After around an hour or so, Jenny finally pulled out the EMF reader in the toolbox and flicked it on. It started beeping frantically, which caused her brows to raise.

After another few minutes, Dean came back into the apartment. "You talk to the cops?" Sam asked as Dean nodded.

"Yeah. Some dude named Jerry or whatever." Jenny went back to looking at the EMF, walking around slowly. "Nothin' we don't already know. Except for one thing they're keepin' out of the papers."

"And what's that?" Jenny asked, tucking the EMF away. Dean hesitated for a moment, clearing his throat.

"Meredith's heart was missing." Jenny felt her own sink into her stomach and she turned to Dean, eyes widening.

"Her heart?" Sam spoke, clearly stunned and looked to Jenny.

"It couldn't have been a— that." Jenny said, walking back to the toolbox. "Lunar cycle isn't right. Plus, EMF went off, so maybe it's a uh— a spirit."

Dean looked down at the blood pattern on the ground, tilting his head slightly. "Any masking tape in the toolbox?" He asked as Jenny rummaged through it, tossing him a roll of tape.

"What are you doing?" Sam asked, watching as his brother started connecting the blood pattern with the tape.

After a short while, Dean stood up, Jenny slowly walking over to him to see the symbol. "Either of you two see this symbol before?" Sam asked as Dean shook his head.

"Never." Dean answered, Jenny tilting her head

"I have." Jenny spoke quietly, the two boys looking at her. "At least— I'm sure I have." She shook her head. "Maybe... shit well now I don't know."

"It's fine. We'll figure it out." Sam said, looking back down at the symbol, still frowning in confusion.

Sam and Jenny sat next to each other as the younger Winchester searched through his computer about anything he could find on the symbol. They were currently at a local bar, which didn't help with Jenny trying to focus as she read John's poor handwriting.

She looked over at Dean, who was shaking his head at the female bartender. She went out to reach for his hand, to which Jenny loudly clasped the book shut, Sam turning to her.

"I'll be right back." She told him, not removing her eyes from the bartender that Dean pushed away, starting to walk back.

"Hey!" Jenny spoke with a grin to Dean. His head whipped around, a look of nervous relief on his face. "You get our drinks?"

"Uh no. Was just about to ask anyways uh— why don't you get them?" Dean walked away quickly, the bartender watching him leave.

The bartenders smile then dropped slowly, barely there as she looked at Jenny. "What can I get for you?" Jenny leaned into the bar, smiling.

"Yeah uh, one shot of backoff, another of, he's not interested and a three shots of try and touch his hand you'll lose yours." Her smile widened as the bartender stared at her, eyes partially wide. "Anyways, did you know a woman named Meredith?"

"Yeah uh... She worked here. Everyone— Everyone liked her. She waited the tables." Jenny hummed, sitting down.

"Did she act any different before she died? Like, something might have been after her? Like she was maybe on a bad acid trip?" The bartender shook her head quickly.

"No.. No she was normal." Jenny nodded in understanding, slapping the bar table.

"Great. Well, it was a lovely short conversation we had. Make sure to ask if they're in a relationship, kay?" Jenny winked at her as the bartender nodded. "Or, just don't flirt with the customers." She walked back to Sam and Dean, leaning over the young Winchester's shoulder.

"You didn't threaten her with stalking, did you?" Sam asked, looking over at Jenny, who shook her head.

"No. Though maybe that would have gotten the point across faster. Did you find anything on the symbol?"

"Uh, no. Like I told Dean, Dad's journal has nothing on it. I can't find anything about it online." Sam clicked to another tab. "The first vic and Meredith didn't know each other— and they weren't connected in any way." Sam turned to look at Dean, doing a double take and looking at the back of the head of a short haired blonde woman.

Sam suddenly got up, causing Dean and Jenny to look at each other curiously before following Dean's little brother. "Sam?"

Sam tapped the woman's shoulder, turning around with a frown. Her frown changed into shock, eyes as wide as Sam's.

"Meg?"
