Waking Up
You wake up and find yourself in an abandoned building. Iranian dust floats in the air, causing you to wheeze.
You squint your eyes and look around and notice your partner asleep next to you one the concrete floor, decorated in rubble. You move most of the rubble off of them.
You can make out that some of the windows were busted and the rays of the blood red sunrise snuck their way into the room you were in. Gunfire could be heard going off in the distance.
The heavy smell of smoke could be smelt somewhere nearby and it was warm. Through one of the windows you can see a vehicle on fire, as if it had blew up recently. Maybe the explosion is what woke you up.
How did you get here anyway? Last you remember you were at home in the United States with your spouse and two children.
No, that had only been a sweet dream, to help you forget where you really were: the Iraq War.
Your line of sight was blurred, giving you a headache. You reach up to your face to adjust your glasses, but they are not there. They are lost and now you must go about in enemy territory near-sighted.
However you still have no idea how you and your partner were separated from your troop.
Somehow you have amnesia. You obviously don't know how or why, but you need to get back to your troop, wherever they were.
You reach over and shake your partner awake.
"Jennings," you whisper. "Wake up."
Jennings rubs the sleep away from their eyes, and sits up. You notice how dirty the tan-ish army suit is and their short yet shaggy hair is a mess around their head.
You can only imagine how you looked like.
"Y/N, What is going on?" Jennings asks you, confused.
"We are lost. We need to find our way back to the troop," You explain.
"I-"
"Shh, do you hear that?" You ask, putting a finger up to silence your partner.
You can hear the light patter of footsteps nearby.
They were too light to be that of an adult or even a teenager.
This was a child.
Even though your vision is blurred, you could make out a small blob, that was slowly moving towards you.
No, you think, Please no!
Children do not just wonder into the middle of a war zone. This was a suicide bomber.
"Jennings we need to leave now!" You order.
The only other option was monstrous and you did not want to resort to that. Also you did not have a gun and getting too close would result in death.
"What, why?" They asked.
You looked around, trying to find the best path of escape.
You notice your glasses sitting on top of nearby rubble, and pick them up, hurriedly slamming them onto your face.
The world has become perfectly clear, and you get a good view of the kid for the first time. He was a small shirtless boy, maybe eight or nine. He had a small box strapped to his chest, the bomb.
Just like your son. Thinking about how parents and these terrorist groups could just force their children to kill like this sends a shiver down your spine.
The child came closer. It looked like they were speaking, but you couldn't hear over the noise of battle outside.
"Why? It's dangerous here!" You hiss at your partner. Did Jennings hit his head or something? It was not normal for a soldier to be this confused, this lost, out on the battlefield. It was unsafe, fatal.
Jennings looks at you like you have gone crazy. You shake your head.
The child kept getting closer by the moment, and soon running away would be too late. All three of us would be dead.
Jennings was refusing at your attempts to get him to runaway with you.
You think that you should just run off alone, but immediately shake the thought away.
No man left behind.
As you see it, you have two options.
One being to simply kill the kid. It was a risky move knowing that the child could set off the bomb, but it would buy you more time to convince Jennings to run to a safer place so that they may be able to contact help.
The other would be to knock out Jennings and carry them out. This would be more efficient and result in no deaths, however it could back fire and Jennings could deflect your move with his fast reflexes and would see you as the enemy and retaliate.
What is your choice?
