"Is it worth it? Is it worth it? Tell me is it worth it?"
Will tripped over the overturned table, the small glass pieces sinking into the soles of his feet.
He cursed and pressed the palms of his hands into his eyes, trying desperately to rub the tears away.
"Cause there is something, and there is nothing"
He stumbled to the couch, pulling out shards of glass, slipping over the carpet.
The last hour didn't happen. Maybe he was in a dream.
The pain in his feet indicated otherwise.
He let loose a loud guttural scream, pulling at his golden locks of hair.
It was never supposed to go like this. It never was.
"There is nothing in between"
~The last hour~
Will admired his reflection in the mirror and smiled. His suit was neatly tailored, especially for this occasion and it made him seem taller than he already was.
He had opted to go for a long rainbow prom dress at first, but decided that it was too dramatic and chose the alternative.
He patted his hair flat one last time and then exited the apartment, grabbing a bouquet of flowers lying on the table before leaving.
With a grin on his face, he drove across the few blocks to his boyfriend's home, humming along to Taylor Swift as he did so.
Boyfriend was not entirely accurate. They had many consecutive arguments for the past few weeks, which led to them not seeing each other or yelling at each other whenever they met. He didn't even know is Nico still considered him as boyfriend or not.
That didn't matter now. Will was going to make it up to Nico, take him to dinner, and the world would be alright once more.
With one hand, the pushed it into his jacket pocket, where a small rectangular box lay.
At the end of the night, he was going to propose.
He parked the car in front of Nico's house and rung the doorbell.
While waiting for his boyfriend of 4 years to emerge, he straightened his posture and adjusted his suit.
He waited.
And waited.
He rung again.
Weird.
He looked at the next door neighbor who was watering their flowers.
"Sorry, have you seen Nico? I think he went out"
They raised a skeptical eyebrow. "Nah, last I saw, he came home from the supermarket a few days ago."
Will frowned.
He thanked the neighbor and turned the handle of Nico's house. Locked.
Will retrieved the spare key Nico had given him but forget to ask for it back and put it in the keyhole.
A blast of chilly cold air hit him in the face, making goosebumps crawl up his arm.
"Nico?" He asked into the silence, depositing his flowers into an empty vase.
He peeked into various rooms but didn't seem to find a trace of Nico.
The smell hit him when his foot touched the first step of the stairs.
It burned and his eyes watered. He pulled his shirt over his nose and quickly bounded up the stairs, two at a time.
"NICO?" He shouted, more urgently.
He reached Nico's bedroom and tried to turn the knob. It was colder here, and he shivered as he rammed his shoulder into the door, making it splinter and break.
The door gave way and that's when he saw him...
his feet dangling a few feet above the ground, a fallen chair next to him and a noose tightened around his neck.
Will bent over and vomited.
~
"Smart of him to make the temperature cooler. Harder to deduct when he really died."
The police turned from Nico's body and addressed his partner. "Found a note?"
The partner shook their head but held up a supermarket bag. "Bought some rope and other some anxiety medication."
Will remembered what the neighbor had said earlier.
"Nico bought them a few days ago."
The police nodded grimly and jotted this down. "And you know him... how?"
"Boyfriend" Will choked out.
"Any idea why he would do this?"
Will shook his head. "He was upset the last time we met but it wasn't enough for him to do this."
He nodded. "Why was he upset?"
"We had a fight. I got a job in Los Angeles. He refused to leave New York"
The police scribbled something in his notepad. "Seems like you have a motive. Where were you in the last few days"
Will raised an eyebrow. "You're not seriously accusing me of killing my own boyfriend are you?"
The policeman looked at him skeptically.
"Fuck you" Will spat out. "His dead body is literally fucking hanging from a fucking fan and you're accusing me? I don't fucking know why he killed himself but he did and and..." he trailed off, holding back tears.
The policeman took a step back, raising his hands to calm him. "Whoa whoa. Chill out. This is just protocol is all. First person who found the body are always questioned."
Will nodded, relaxing slightly.
A woman strode into the room. Her badge read "RARA" which was either her rank or her name. Which Will would find amusing either way.
"We've found traces of chloroform in the sink and there has been signs of a struggle downstairs in the basement. This has just turned into a homicide case."
She turned her fierce eyes onto Will. "Mr. Solace, we have to take you to the station for further questioning."
He froze.
RARA continued. "Seeing as Mr. Di Angelo has no other close relations, you're our main suspect in this case."
Will ran.
~
Will didn't remembered driving home. He didn't remember overturning the table.
He was fixated on one thing. He had to go. Go before they found out the truth.
He screamed, tugging out his hair. His feet throbbed from the glass, blood seeping out.
It was never supposed to go like this. It never was.
They weren't supposed to suspect him.
This was not going according to plan. He was fucked.
His shirt smelled faintly of his own vomit.
Nico hadn't smelled this bad when Will had chloroformed him a few days back and hung him from the fan.
He hadn't anticipated the overwhelming smell of rot and hadn't managed to keep his lunch down.
He closed his eyes and took deep breaths. He would have to change it later.
Right now, the police were after him. He had to run. Run and hide.
He grabbed a gun and ran downstairs.
He unlocked the garage and got in the driver's seat.
He pressed the accelerator and looked in the rear mirror, just in time for the police to pull into his driveway.
RARA:
He had gotten away but we would find him soon.
She looked around the destroyed house, pausing on a photograph of a couple.
Mr. Solace looked younger, more happy and full of life. He was kissing the check of a boy.
The victim was blushing in the picture, a shy smile spreading over his face.
She turned it over, and scrawled on the back were the words;
"Forever in life and death."
She spotted Jason out of the corner of her eye, striding towards her.
"Found a medical report" he said holding up a piece of paper.
She took it from him tenderly and her eyes widened.
~
Will
He had lied. They didn't fight because he had gotten a new job.
Nico was sick. He was sick and suffering. Will hated to see Nico suffer so Will had killed him. It was painless with him unconscious.
Now Will would follow.
Forever in life and death.
