Airplanes
I hated airplanes. It scared the living daylights out of me and that's saying something considering that I was a child of Apollo.
The flight was going to be only about a few hours long, but I couldn't stop the flow of anxiety riding through me.
Thousands of crazy scenarios ran through my head as I stared out of the window. The plane had not even moved yet but I was ready to puke. I hadn't realized I had been biting my fingernails until I accidentally bit into my skin. It was a nervous habit of mine and my friends tended to chide me about it, not unkindly Ofcourse.
Heights of any kind did not bode well with me. A few years ago, my friends had dragged me to an amusement park and forced me onto one of the bigger rides. I swore never to set foot in an amusement park ever again after I threw up in the bathroom afterwards.
It felt stupid, a child of Apollo afraid of flying close to their dad. But those who have heard Icarus's story might think otherwise.
"Cabin crew, prepare for takeoff" the voice from the pda announced, sounding garbled and robotic.
The plane started to move.
I gripped the armrests tighter
"Hey are you okay?"
I jumped, figuratively. My heart skipping a beat.
I hadn't noticed when they had appeared, but all thoughts disappeared when I saw their beautiful chocolate brown eyes. The person next to me was gorgeous.
Their eyebrows were knotted as they looked at me with kinda concern.
"Are you good dude?"
I shook myself off my stupor and nodded weirdly. I flushed, my cheeks turning red as I registered how awkward that was. I tended to get flustered around cute and hot people.
"You're kinda suffocating the arm rest"
They pointed out, poking my hand.
"Oh"
SmOOtHh Will. Smoothest bastard ever. YOU WIN AN AWARD.
"Not used to flying?" He asked, leaning comfortably into his seat. Unaccustomed to this stunning person next to me, I had completely neglected to see the badge on his chest which read "HE/HIM"
"You can say that"
I replied, surprising myself with a complete sentence.
Silence descended over us and the plane suddenly lurched forward, its wheels retracting into its body and lifting off the ground.
I squeezed the armrest and closed my eyes.
"Nico di Angelo"
I looked up, a warm presence covering over my hand. His hand. He was holding my hand. FUCK YEAH.
"William Andrew Solace" I replied. And then immediately realized how formal and icky that sounded and backtracked. "I mean Will, my name's Will. Call me Will."
"WAS"
I looked at him confusingly, his hand still over mine, holding it comfortingly offering me some solace.
"Your initials," he said, blushing, "it's W.A.S"
WAIT. Blushing?????? LE GASP. HE WAS FUCKING BLUSHING.
"Yeah" I replied, a grin breaking on my face. "I suppose it is"
I was feeling brave and I touched the Hamilton pin on my bag for luck.
"Uhm, So. I know we just met and all and I don't even know if you're into boys. And like talking about boys, my pronouns are he/him too and I just wanted to say that your pronoun badge is like, super awesome?! But like, I shouldn't assume who you luv or anything, like maybe you're aroace, I don't even know, but what I'm meaning to say is CANIHAVEYOURNUMBER?"
The last few words came out in a jumble and I immediately the free hand over my mouth. "Crap" I have definitely said too much. I tend to ramble when I'm nervous. He was quiet and I looked out the window, sparing me the embarrassment of a rejection. I was surprised to see that we were already high in the sky, flying smoothly without a hint of turbulence.
I peeked back at him and he had a pen in his hand. He had a mischievous grin on his face which made me want to melt into a very queer happy puddle on the floor. He scribbled neatly and carefully on my hand his digits and he grinned.
"Here you go sunshine."
Let's just say that I was comfortable for the rest of the flight. Endless blue beneath two figures holding hands. It felt like I was in heaven.
