What Happens in Film Club

Will's POV

The room was dark when he peered in, the hazy glow of one of the school laptops illuminating a boy's pale face, dark eyes scanning the screen with eyes open wide. He knocked lightly on the doorframe and the boy gave a jump, gently lowering the screen of his laptop and staring at Will with wide eyes. "Is this film club?" Will asked, scratching the back of his head and giving the boy a small smile. "The posters said to come here."

"Oh, yeah, it is," the boy said, standing up and popping out his knees. "Sorry, I didn't think anyone would show up. No one has in the past, it's just my excuse to get school-funded snacks and watch movies all afternoon in an empty classroom. But I'm excited that you're here. It can get kind of lonely in here sometimes."

"I just moved here this year," Will explained, letting his backpack slide off of his shoulder, hitting the tiled floor with a thump. "Trust me, I would have joined this club a long time ago."

"Well, we're glad to have you," Nico said, flopping down onto a beanbag chair slumped over on the paisley printed rug. "Me and my beanbag chair. I'm president,  and the beanbag chair is the treasurer. You can be the vice president if you want, though. Or the secretary, or you don't have to be anything. We're not picky."

"I'll gladly accept the title of vice president," Will said, sitting cross legged on the rug. There wasn't a second beanbag chair but the rug was soft, fuzz rising up and protecting his legs from the thick air of late September settling over the school like a wet blanket. "So, what are we watching first? A deep movie with a meaningful message, an obscure movie from the 80s, a black and white silent from the 30s?"

"Lilo and Stitch. We don't have actual disks or anything like that, but the school lets me log into my Netflix subscription, so we get to use our money on other things. Like snacks. And beanbags." He slapped his beanbag and the stuffing inside shifted together in a strange chorus. "I actually call it Stitch. You know, because it's blue. And Lilo and Stitch is, like, my favorite movie."

"I've never seen it," Will admitted sheepishly, his blush hidden by the darkness. He could see Nico's mouth drop open and his mouse clicked onto the movie, the red circle spinning, spinning, spinning over the blue background.

"Well, you're in for a real treat." The circle brought them to fifty percent loaded, sixty seven percent loaded, seventy three percent loaded. It was buffering. "I thought everyone had seen Lilo and Stitch. Well, everyone who had a good childhood has seen Lilo and Stitch."

"Hey, not fair."

"Shut up," Nico hissed, swatting him in the arm. "The movie's starting." His eyes were still glued to the screen but he managed to pass Will the popcorn bowl and Will dove his hand inside, stuffing a handful inside of his mouth, letting a small sigh escape his lips.

"What is that?" he murmured, watching aliens flit across the screen. "It's amazing."

"Caramel corn," Nico explained. "We get the good stuff, because we only have one member." He glanced at Will, peeling his eyes from the screen and a happiness was dancing in his eyes, one full of hope. "Well, actually, now we have two."

When Will arrived the next week there was a second beanbag sitting next to the first, a deep pink peppered with white leaves. "I got this for you," Nico said, patting the beanbag and making the stuffing inside stir. "You can't sit on the floor, if you're going to be a member. I thought we could call it Lilo. You know, cause of her dress, and mine's name is stitch."

"I love it," Will grinned, letting the material swallow him up. "How'd you know I was coming back?" There was a twinkle in Nico's eyes when he spoke.

"I had a good feeling about you. Some people, some people don't come back. But you do, and I could tell. I'm glad you're back, by the way."

"So am I," Will laughed as Nico ripped open party sized Doritos bags, pouring them into a glass bowl and listening to them clatter on top of one another. "So, what are we watching today?"

"Titanic," Nico responded, his mouse roving his laptop screen until he found the movie, sandwiched between a Netflix original Will had never heard of and a romcom from the 90s.

"Woah. That's a long movie."

"It'll give us time to hang out," Nico shrugged. "Besides, I need an excuse for not doing my homework." The red circle was spinning and he sunk into the beanbag chair as the opening credits began to roll.

As the movie progressed, Jack and Rose falling deeper in love Nico and Will inched closer together, their beanbags morphing into one as their elbows rubbed up against each other. Will's head sat on the edge of the beanbag chair, his hair staticky and at some point Nico laid his head down, too, and if Will glanced up he would be staring into Nico's eyes, deep brown and gleaming with happiness. Nico's hand rested on top of his stomach and the soft breaths were pushing it up and down, up and down in a steady rhythm that managed to pull Will's attention away from the movie. It was trance like until a loud sound would crash from Nico's laptop speakers and his head would whip back around, the trance broken.

"That was amazing," Nico said as the movie came to a close, his head raised to the roof as he stretched out his body, his limbs popping back into place. "It makes me cry just a little bit every time."

"I had never seen it," Will admitted with a light blush. "Everyone else was always talking about it, but I had no idea what they were talking about. I liked it, though. It lived up to my expectations."

"You're welcome," Nico grinned. "Your turn."

"What?"

"What's one of your favorite movies?" Nico asked, pulling his legs up onto the beanbag. "I keep picking movie's you've never seen before, but you should get a chance, too."

"Uh, Alex Strangelove?" Will dug his fingernails under each other and relief flooded his body as Nico grinned.

"I've been meaning to watch that!" he said. "I've heard it's really good." He pushed himself up, gathering up the beanbag in his arms and stuffing it inside of a closet. He set the empty chip bowl inside, crumbs littering the bottom and shutting his laptop screen as Will shoved his beanbag next to Nico's. "See you next week, I guess." It was the first time Will had ever seen Nico look sad and his heart dropped a few inches in his chest at the thought of waiting another week to see him.

"Yeah, see you next week I guess."

"Unless." Nico was thinking. "Would you want to hang out? We have our homework, we could get some stuff done at this cute little coffee shop I know. I'll pay for you."

"Really?" Will's smile split his face and he felt his heart fluttering up on light wings. "I'd love that."

The fluorescents hummed as they walked down the hall, quiet conversation filling the air between them. Lockers sat lining the sides of the walls and there were fresh marks from where the janitor had gone through with a mop, and the floors gleamed. The fall air outside was crisp as they walked and Will felt himself growing closer to Nico as they walked, skin touching skin and smiles wide. The coffee shop wasn't far, a tiny brick building on the corner, dim with fairy lights strung up around the ceiling and a chalkboard listing off the specials. "You want coffee, right?" Nico asked, pulling out his wallet and glancing at Will.

"Yeah, but I can pay."

"No, no, I'll pay. I invited you, after all." He stepped up to the counter, a five dollar bill clutched in his hand. "Two large hot coffees, please."

"Coming right up, Nico," the barista said with a smile. "It'll be four fifty." He handed her the five and he dropped the change inside of the tip jar, coins rattling against the bottom.

"Thanks, Patty," he said, nodding at Will to take the couch in the corner. He grabbed a handful of sugars and creams, joining Will on the couch and letting his bag hit the floor with a thump. "I come here a lot," he explained, dumping a cream into his coffee and watching it swirl in, coloring the coffee a dark caramel color. "It's a nice place to do homework."

"It's really nice," Will sighed. "I like it."

"We can come here more often, if you want," Nico suggested. "I like hanging out with you." Will felt his cheeks heat up and he smiled into his coffee.

"I like hanging out with you, too."

------

They were set up, smart food dumped into their bowl and Alex Strangelove taking up their screen. "Anything to say before we start?" Nico asked, his thumb on the mousepad.

"This is one of my favorite movies, and I think you'll like it as much as I will," Will grinned, his body swallowed up by the beanbag. "Anything you want to say."

"I think I'll like it as much as you do," Nico said. "Let's get into this." The familiar circle spun on the screen and the talking fell flat as the movie began.

Will wasn't sure how or when it had happened but their beanbags were squished together, their arms an inch apart. A tension was crackling between them, a tension that neither one of them wanted to acknowledge. Their hands brushed together in the popcorn bowl, their eyes connected, their hearts beat in tandem. Will found his attention straying from the screen, unable to rip his eyes away from Nico's hazelnut eyes, rosy cheeks, wide smile. "What?" he asked, noticing Will's stares.

"Nothing," he blushed, glancing down at the floor. "It's just- it's just you look nice right now."

"I look the same as I do every day," Nico laughed.

"Yeah. Exactly." Nico's lips parted and Will's heart hammered in his chest until Nico's smile was wider and he was inching closer to Will, cupping Will's face in his hands. They were inches apart when the door swung open and they heard Percy Jackson's voice booming above their heads and they scrambled apart, eyes wide.

"Is this film club?" he was asking. "I saw the signs."

"Percy, this is a closed club," Nico yelled, leaping up and pushing him out. "You can't just show up halfway through. Make an appointment, maybe we'll have a spot for you."

"Nico, you have two people, wha-" he was cut off when Nico slammed the door in his face, his cheeks beet red and his chest heaving up and down. "Now that that's taken care of," he said, dropping down to Will's beanbag. All of a sudden his mouth was on Will's and they were kissing, Nico's body pressing up against Will's, and Will thought that it was the best feeling in the world.

Hey guys, so first of all I'm so, so sorry that was late. It's getting harder for me to get these done on Friday nights so I was wondering if anyone would mind me switching to Saturday nights instead? I started writing these when I didn't have a job and when I didn't have as much homework but I'm a sophomore and I'm busier and more tired, and I just feel like I'd be able to write better one shots for you guys if I have a full day to do it. Let me know if you have any objections because if not, it's probably going to be Saturday from now on. Also, for next month I have a bunch of spooky stories planned, so look forward to those because I'm really excited! Anyway, I hope you liked this one!
