Hi everyone! I took a lot of time to edit this chapter and fix a lot of things that didn't sit right with me while reading it over. Further edits may happen depending on your opinions but this chapter is heavily centered around Oikawa's feelings and so it will be a bit like the last but there will be more dialogue.
Please, enjoy this chapter and if you have any questions do not be afraid to ask. There are still a lot of mistakes in the chapter so please ignore them as I will fix them when I find the time to do so :)
*******************
What exactly was love? Many say it is when two people have strong feelings for one another to the point where they would sacrifice themselves to keep the other out of danger. What a load of malarkey. Love was a stupid joke for people who relied on others. Oikawa sat in the chief of surgery's office spinning his body around in the cushioned chair. Why was he having to wait on the idiot in the first place? Shouldn't that dote get here before Oikawa did? He was the one who invited him in the first place so it was a bit unprofessional to be late to the meeting he had originally set up.
Oikawa casually blew raspberries as he ignored the chimes coming from the trash can under Kuroo's desk. His brown eyes remained focused on the horrid décor surrounding him as he tried to push his worries to the back of his mind. The walls were littered with Kuroo's certificates and degrees for the medical field like any other doctor's office but on his bookshelves outside of the standard medical books were little cat figurines. He had one of every color and many had dynamic poses as if they were fighting or getting ready to pounce on another one. The guy was an eighty-year-old cat mom stuck in a thirty-one-year-old's body. Oikawa scrunched his face up at the desktop background of Kuroo's computer as he spun by. The onyx-haired man was at a cat café with his assistant Kenma holding cats while smiling. Kenma wasn't having the best of days but Kuroo's excitement is what stole the attention from anyone who looked at the photo anyways.
The office door squeaked open as the tall man step inside running a hand through his black hair, "Sorry for coming in so late I got caught up with talking to an unhappy family in the waiting room," Kuroo stopped just a few feet inside his office and gave Oikawa a befuddled look. "Why are you in my chair, Tooru?"
Oikawa slapped his hand onto the Cherrywood desk and rolled his eyes, "Does it matter? It's technically my chair," Oikawa crossed his arms over his chest and leaned back into Kuroo's office chair raising one of his brows, "Why did you even want to see me?"
Ding. Ding.
Kuroo's golden colored eyes glanced down to the trashcan visible beneath his desk. "Why did you take it off silent?" He asked his friend as he seated himself in the chair across from Oikawa.
"I broke the volume button when I threw it at the wall in the bathroom, not that it even matters really. Now, back to my question," Oikawa picked a pen up from Kuroo's desk and placed it under his nose so that his top lip held it up. "Why did you need to meet with me?"
Kuroo shrugged and placed the heels of his shoes up onto the desk and slid his phone out of his pocket to skim through social media. "Iwaizumi Hajime; you recommended him to me while I was trying to find a replacement neurosurgeon and I just wanted to know what exactly it was that you saw in him."
Oikawa lost his focus upon the mentioning of Iwaizumi's name. The little red and white pen tumbled off of his chin as his lip relaxed making an audible clack against the desk below. "I saw potential in him. Potential we haven't seen in any of our interns or residents in a while. Y'know, they're all really bland and boring outside of the attendings because they're all such people pleasers!" Oikawa stuck his tongue out and rolled his eyes a bit.
Kuroo didn't take his gaze off of his phone, "Hmph, that's the pot calling the kettle black isn't it?"
Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding.
"Oh shut up. I know I'm a people pleaser but I can at least do my job and my work is better than the other heart surgeons we have."
"No denying that but when I watched your little plaything today, I can't say that I saw the same potential as you do," Kuroo gently placed his phone onto his desk and slid his feet off from the hardwood surface in order to lean forward with his elbows on the desk. His golden iris sparkled from the giant Christmas tree outside of the window behind Oikawa. "The guy was a nervous wreck. It was kind of amusing, pathetic but amusing."
"We are surgeons Tetsurou, anxiety is always creeping into our minds with each patient we operate on. One wrong move and we could literally ruin a person's life and arguably since he works with literal brains all day that chance increases significantly! It also doesn't help that his own boss was watching him like he was a piece of meat!"
"Wait a second," Kuroo smirked smugly as he lifted his index finger into the air, "Just one boss? You haven't told him about your real position in this hospital yet have you?"
Ding. Ding. Ding.
Oh the irony in those stupid little, infuriating dings really rubbed themselves in Oikawa's face. He felt his ears begin to warm up as he glared at Kuroo, "Of course I told him about my position in this place."
Kuroo, with his smug grin still plastered to his face, slowly stood from his chair and weaseled his way around the desk to stand behind the chair Oikawa sat in. He placed both hands on either shoulder of the shorter man and leaned in close to one of Oikawa's ears. Oikawa could feel Kuroo's hot breath tickling his skin sending a cold shiver down his spine, "Your ears turn red when you lie," Kuroo whispered.
Oikawa smacked the palm of his hand against the chief of surgery's forehead with a scowl, "Shut the hell up. I'll tell him another day!"
Kuroo let out a fake whimper as he shot upright and touched the little red mark on his forehead, "I think you owe me paid time off for that sir, I think I've got a concussion... Oh wait," Kuroo's lips widened in a playful smile as he reached out to the desk phone, "Maybe I should have Iwaizumi come check me out and make sure I'm not seriously injured."
Oikawa threw himself out of his chair and slapped Kuroo's hand off the receiver. He was now standing, eyes glaring up at his taller friend. "Don't you dare call him up here!" Oikawa exclaimed, shoving a finger into Kuroo's face, "If you do then I'll show him all those embarrassing photos of you in high school like when your hair caught fire or when Mattsun got the class to vote for you to be a princess in the class play or- ."
Kuroo's playful demeanor changed rather quickly as he narrowed his eyes down at Oikawa and tilted his chin up into the air, "You wouldn't dare."
"I'm a petty bitch, of course I would do it."
"I'll tell Makki that you accidentally broke his dandelion pen that he lost a week ago," Kuroo put quotations around the word 'lost' as he spoke.
A bead of sweat formed on Oikawa's forehead as he tried to keep his gaze locked with Kuroo's. If Makki were to find out about the pen then Oikawa would be totally done for. The pranks would get even worse than the damn stick of cream cheese deodorant they did last week. Oh god what if Makki posted the polaroid of Oikawa from their Christmas party last year? Oikawa's face began to burn thinking back to how drunk he had been that night and all of the atrocities he committed that Makki and Mattsun kept record of. He would be done for. He would be the laughing stock of the hospital and his reputation would go to shit.
Oikawa teared up as he pouted, "Tetsu-chan you're such an asshole!" Oikawa pitifully whined in defeat as he threw himself back down into the office chair and stomped his feet lightly against the ground.
Ding.
"I know," he smirked triumphantly as he knelt down and dug Oikawa's phone out from the trash can. "Now, let's talk about someone else, shall we?" He looked over his shoulder at Oikawa as he held the little phone in the air. "Shimizu I presume?"
"Ding ding ding." Oikawa muttered sarcastically. "You asked the world's dumbest question, want a cookie?"
Kuroo let of a half-hearted laugh and shook his head, "Nope, just want you to silence the damn thing is all."
"I told you the volume key is broken."
"You did, yes. However, you can make her stop annoying the hell out of her if you just text her."
"You think I haven't tried that? I tried to talk to her about what she was complaining about but she won't hear any of it!" Oikawa groaned as he grabbed at his hair in frustration.
Kuroo furrowed his brows and looked down at Oikawa's phone still chiming in his hands. "What is she upset about this time?" He inquired.
Oikawa felt his blood pressure rising. "I don't even know at this point! She wanted me to go on vacation with her but my responsibilities here kind of trump a trip to another city and she thinks I'm avoiding her on purpose," Oikawa waved his hands around in the air as he began to rant. Kuroo sat on the floor bug-eyed and probably regretted opening his mouth up. "When I told her I was sorry she told me that I do this all the time and that I never want to be around her anymore and said that we need to talk about spending more time alone together so we can work out issues. However, when I bring something up to her that I'm uncomfortable with she doesn't even listen to me. Isn't that just ridiculous?"
"Why don't you dump her then?"
Oikawa stiffened up. Dump her? His right hand shot up to his chest and his skinny fingers gripped onto the fabric of his scrubs tightly. 'The one time I tried to break things off with her she- no Tooru don't think about it or you'll have another one of your attacks...' His heart was thundering against his rib cage as if it were attempting to burst free from his body and his palms, god they were dripping with sweat as he took in one shaky breath at a time. Things would be so much easier if Shimizu were a normal woman that he could just kick out onto the streets but she has her claws so deeply rooted into his life at this point that even if they did split, something massive would happen that could possibly put his position in this hospital in jeopardy. It was best to continue playing the role of her little lapdog, wasn't it?
"I still love her too much to do that, Kuroo," Oikawa forced a smile onto his face as he croaked the words out. He felt bile rising up into his throat as he spoke.
His old friend cocked his head to the side in surprise, "Kuroo? Huh, you haven't really called me that in a while. You're serious about this then, huh? Like, you really want to follow through with the marriage and retire later so you can let her pursue a career in this hospital after you have a child?"
Giving a curt nod, Oikawa gently plucked his phone from Kuroo's hand and stood up. "I may need to put some extra thought into things but yes, I still wish to marry Shimizu..." he unruffled his scrubs and began walking to the office door. "I'll be on the roof if you need anything else and about Iwaizumi," He glanced over his shoulder to his old friend standing up, "Give him a while to adjust to this place, I am positive that he will be the surgeon we were looking for."
"I'll trust you on this one then."
With that, Oikawa opened the door and stepped out of Kuroo's ugly little cat infested office and back into the hospital. He gave Kenma a little head nod as he passed the man by. Kenma simply watched him while he played on his switch. 'How much do we even pay this guy?' Oikawa scoffed to himself. He carefully unlocked his phone as he entered the stairwell across the hall.
Shimizu: Hello?
Shimizu: are you serious right now? Are you ignoring me again?
Shimizu: Tooru, I understand where you are coming from but I also want to see you more. I need you by my side. I love you more than you will ever understand so why won't you answer me?
Shimizu: Is it because of the new doctor you recently hired? I know you like giving all the newbies tours but do you need to spend so much time with them when you have me?
What did love mean? Did it mean you would have to endure things like this? Did it mean you were expected to stay with someone no matter what? What if the person changed from who you thought they were? That once loving, kind, and beautiful soul you held within your hands slowly rooted its thorns into the soft skin of your palms and forced its venom into your veins slowly infecting your body and mind as well as theirs. What were you to do when this happens? Those who tell you to just leave the relationship didn't know the inner turmoil one struggled with when attempting to leave a toxic relationship. Most of the time you will have to cut a piece of your body off just to escape their grasp. The longer you were with them, the larger that piece would become.
How big was Oikawa's piece now? It had been sixteen years hadn't it? "Jesus," Oikawa scoffed as he pushed the rooftop door open and stepped out into the cold air outside, "Feels like eighty."
The city of Tokyo never failed to leave a person breathless. From any point in the city the Skytree was visible but from above all the other buildings, it was almost as if Oikawa could touch it through the fence. That was the one thing he loved about this place. The rooftop was always quiet, secluded, and it provided the man with a view that never let him down no matter how many times he laid his eyes upon the glistening lights below. He lifted the cigarette he had bummed off of Tanaka earlier that day out from his pocket and used the lighter he always carried in his back pocket to light it. Was he proud to be that one doctor that needed a smoke? Not at all really. He actually despised smoking but he had to admit that they did help take some of the edge off from a stressful day.
Ding. Ding.
'Oh God,' Oikawa thought to himself with a little eye roll, 'How many times is she going to text me before she realizes that I'm probably ignoring her?' Why did he have to break his volume key earlier?
There was always a question that gnawed away at Oikawa. What would have happened if he had never taken notice of her back in his second year of high school? What would have happened if Kuroo and Mattsun hadn't sent him to the library to grab them a computer to finish their late project on? Would he have been a much happier person by now? Would he even be at this hospital surrounded by his old high school buddies? Maybe things would have played out in a much more different way that would have left him just as miserable as he is now. Who knew. You can't change the past by just questioning the choices you made, hell you can't change the past to begin with so it was better to just buck up and deal with it instead of whine about it like a child who didn't get their way. Oikawa smiled a little to himself; he was still immature wasn't he?
He glanced down to the cigarette resting between his index and middle finger. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Watching the ash fall from the little cancer stick was disappointing. He brought it to his lips once more and took a deep breath. He may as well savor this even if it was for a moment. Upon breathing out, a loud yawn sounded from behind him. 'Shit!' He couldn't get caught smoking by colleague. The lecturing and berating would only worsen his mood. He instantly dropped the cigarette to the gravel below him and placed his foot over it to snuff it out and hide it from view. Hopefully the smoke looked like his breath crystalizing in the air rather than what it really was. He looked over his shoulder and met eyes with his visitor. Oh course, of all the people in the world it had to be him. Iwaizumi-fucking-Hajime. He was really in for it now.
"Oh Iwa-chan I see you've found my little hiding spot!" He threw up a little peace sign and smiled his stupid little grin he always used to make people feel at ease around him. It didn't really seem to work on Iwaizumi though, but it didn't hurt to keep trying. His smile was worth it.
The spiky black haired man rolled his green eyes as he took his place next to Oikawa. Iwaizumi didn't even look at him as he spoke, "I just wanted to come up for fresh air but your nasty habit took that chance away from me," he pointed his finger down at Oikawa's crushed cigarette.
'Dammit, I thought I did it before he saw...' Oikawa scrunched his nose up and clenched his fists a little as he smooshed what was left of the cigarette beneath his heel."So you did see it, huh. You're a sneaky guy Iwa-chan. I figured someone was lurking behind the door but I was just hoping it was Mattsun so he could just bum it with me and be off."
"I don't have to see it to know what you were doing. Anyone with a brain can tell what that smell on you is."
Right, the smell existed. Wow, Oikawa was really on a roll tonight. Ding. Ding. Ding. Why couldn't she stop? Why was she insisting on getting an answer from him right here and now? He was with Iwaizumi right now who just happened to be the one person he didn't want finding out about his fiancé. He wanted to be able to just have a normal friend with no connection to Shimizu or his family. Was it too much to ask for? Oikawa's smile faded as his face crinkled up. What was the point in even fighting it anymore? Iwaizumi was going to find out about Shimizu when she came back anyways. Like them, she worked at the hospital so it was unavoidable. Hopefully Iwaizumi didn't stop talking to Oikawa after she reenters those front doors like many others before him did. So many of the staff were so friendly with him to just be on his good side because of her. He wouldn't be able to handle watching one more person force a smile when they're around him simply because of his position in this place. He wanted all of those faux laughs and disingenuous conversations to end. He only wanted to be around his friends.
However, he was afraid. He was so frightened of what sort of judgment Iwaizumi would pass onto Oikawa if he learned the whole truth that he had been hiding from him. Would he hate him? What would Iwaizumi say to him if he gazed upon all of the baggage Oikawa hid away from him and the rest of the world?
"Do you ever wonder how the strangers on the streets around you managed to get to where they are today? Like what were their struggles and what did they do to overcome these things?" Oikawa spoke softly, his voice barely making a sound as he looked out to the city below them. It was a stupid question wasn't it? Of course Iwaizumi didn't think about strangers who passed him by on the streets. He had a daughter for God's sake. He had a responsibility to her to be there for her before all others so why worry about someone you would never see again. Oikawa was still a child desperately clinging onto whatever he could in hopes of gaining the approval from someone who probably didn't think much about him.
Ding. Ding. Ding. "To be honest with you Oikawa, I do think about it now and then. I try not to dwell on the thought for too long since everyone has their own story that differs from others but I like to try to give everyone the kindness I wish had been shown to me years ago."
Oikawa felt his body stiffen up as he ripped his gaze away from the city below them. He cared about people who left little to no impact on the world around him? It was honestly odd hearing someone say something of the sort. Many would have just given Oikawa a simple no just like every other time he had asked the question. Curiosity got the better of the man as his thin lips parted, "What's your story, if you don't mind sharing it that is?"
His eyes followed Iwaizumi's every movement as the man reached down into his pocket and pulled a little coin out. What was it exactly? Why the hell did Iwaizumi just whip a little coin out? Oikawa studied the piece of metal for a moment more before he recognized the words on it. To thine own self be true. It was a fucking sobriety coin. What a dumbass. Oikawa smiled as he punched Iwaizumi's muscular arm as he laughed, "So you judged me for having an unhealthy habit but you're the one with the sobriety coin? You're a bit of a hypocrite Iwa-chan."
Iwaizumi laughed and put the coin back. He rubbed the back of his neck as he looked back out to the city below. "You caught me. I'm a bit of a piece of shit."
"Not at all. I think you're the opposite actually."
Ding.
He was anything but an asshole. He was admirable, kind hearted, and strong. Oikawa warmly grinned at the shorter man. One look at Iwaizumi and you would have never known what he had been through in his life. He fell to a low point and he still managed to pick himself back up and take care of his daughter. He was a piece of work in all the right ways, wasn't he? He was a brilliant neurosurgeon, father, and person. Oikawa stood in awe over him. This meat head had a story like Oikawa even if they were completely different. Both of them struggled but at least one of them managed to piece themselves back together. His smile began to fade slightly though when he thought back to Iwaizumi's first day here. Iwaizumi had cried when he was getting ready to head home. He had been holding his scrubs quietly whimpering to himself. Oikawa's heart throbbed as he realized how much of an ass he was being by simply assuming that the emerald eyed man had his life in order when he was clearly hurting just like others in this world.
"I think that you're a good guy, believe it or not. I know I'm a complete dumbass but even I can tell you try your hardest for the people around you despite the things that have happened in your life and I find it honorable." This was the least he could do for Iwaizumi, genuine words of encouragement.
Ding.
'Stop it. Just stop already!'
He could see the smallest shade of red beginning to blot at Iwaizumi's nose. It was kind of cute to see the steel faced man beginning to blush at a simple compliment. "Thanks I guess. I don't want to hear another compliment leave your mouth though. Your voice annoys the shit out of me," He huffed as he crossed his arms over his chest. Was that a little pout Oikawa could see on Iwaizumi's face? How adorable. This grown man was acting like a little child over a compliment.
Ding.
That was it. That was the last fucking ding Oikawa had left in him that night. He was over it, so bloody over the damn thing. He clenched his jaw and furrowed his brows deeply as he began to step back and dug his phone out of his pocket. Why couldn't she just let him be? Why was she doing this to him? Why? Why him? There wasn't a thought going through Oikawa's head outside of the very simple goal of getting rid of the damn phone he held in his hand and there was only one fast acting way to never hear that damn ringtone again. "God fucking dammit just shut up already!" He lifted the phone into the air and wound his arm up. Out of the corner of his eye, Oikawa could see a horrified Iwaizumi beginning to lunge towards Oikawa to keep him from making this mistake but it was already too late for the both of them because when Oikawa whipped his arm forward, he felt all his anger drain from his body as he watched his old phone fly high above the fence and down into the city below.
"You fucking moron, you can be fined for that if you get caught!" Iwaizumi grabbed a tight hold of Oikawa's shoulders digging his fingers into his shoulders as he began to shake the taller man.
Who cares? Oikawa was finally free even if it was only for a day or two! He could finally breathe again and it was rejuvenating! Oikawa allowed his body to sway with each shake from Iwaizumi as he let out a loud fit of laughter that rattled his bones. God, why did this feel so great? "As long as I don't hear that annoying ringtone anymore then I don't care how many fines I have to pay!" He wanted to enjoy this moment for what it was; pure unadulterated joy and freedom.
When Iwaizumi shoved Oikawa's body away from his, Oikawa couldn't help but instinctively grab onto the jerk's shirt. They fell onto the gravel as Oikawa continued laughing like an insane person. The brunette was more than fully prepared to get a few stitches from the sharp pieces on gravel making contact with the back of Oikawa's head but it never came. Much to his confusion he found himself underneath Iwaizumi with the man's hand tucked up under his fluffy hair. Why the hell did he do that? Clearly He was in some sort of pain by the way he was wincing above Oikawa. Wait a second, was he always this handsome? Oikawa was never one to care about looks but in this moment he was totally awestruck, like holy shit. He never noticed the sharp jawline Iwaizumi had, he could literally cut stone with it. Oh and his eyes? Oikawa already knew they were pretty but it was almost as if he were staring into a gerbera daisy. Now, he didn't mean to look too much but Oikawa could help but lower his gaze onto Iwaizumi's toned body. As much as the nurses talked about how they hated the way Iwaizumi talked to Oikawa, even they admitted to finding the way his muscles filled in his scrubs and coat quite attractive. Well 'attractive' wasn't really the word Oikawa was thinking of but he could tell Iwaizumi worked out at least every day and it most definitely paid off.
Hey, wait a second. Was Iwaizumi checking him out too? Oikawa met the spiky haired man's eyes and realized how much he was studying Oikawa's face. "If you're going to gawk at me like that you should take me on a date first Iwa-chan," He stated coyly. He would pay for the man to continue staring at him like that though to be quite honest. It was kind of intoxicating the way those eyes studied his face and body. He wanted to be under the man's gaze for so much longer so that he could bask himself in Iwaizumi's attention.
Instead of giving Oikawa a normal little smart ass quip for his stupid joke, Iwaizumi actually began to lower his face towards his. 'Whoa whoa whoa, wait what the fuck? Is he about to do what I think he is about to do?' Oikawa's face flushed red as Iwaizumi continued to close the gap between them at a steady pace. Was this really about to happen after only a few days of knowing each other? Oikawa had a fiancé so he should be fighting this and yet all he could do beneath the handsome man was grip tightly onto his purple scrubs. This was about to happen and for some reason he wanted it. He was truly drunk off of the feeling of his heart skipping a beat in his chest and his stomach tying itself into millions of knots. He was in the wrong for wishing for this but he just couldn't help himself. He wanted to continue enjoying his moment of freedom away from Shimizu. He wanted to feel what it was like to not be chained down. He wanted this more than he wanted anything else in the world.
Just when Oikawa had fully prepared him mind and body for what he thought was coming, Iwaizumi simply dropped his head onto Oikawa's chest and breathed out a quiet little insult, "I would rather eat the shit of a senile patient before I ever take you out on a date Shitty-kawa."
Oh. Oh right. This was reality and not some sort of dream, wasn't it? Of course Iwaizumi wasn't going to kiss Oikawa. Why would he? They barely knew one another and he has a daughter too while Oikawa had a fiancé. "Uh-huh..." Oikawa's caramel gaze fixated on the stars high above them as he laid next to his new friend. When he was a child he used to live by the seashore that always had the most perfect view of the stars that decorated the night sky. In the city the sparkling world above was obscured only allowing a person a limited view of the true beauty that hid behind the clouds but out in the country one could see the universe in all of her beauty. It was man's birth given right to know what the celestial world high above looked like since everyone had a little bit of stardust within their souls.
Oikawa would always reach his hands up to the sky in order to grab at a star to make a wish upon, for each represented a life in this world. He would wish for someone to have a million reasons to smile that night, for someone to laugh until they cried, for a healthy birth, for anything and everything that could bring someone genuine joy in this god forsaken world he lived in. He wanted to nurture the fragile souls in this world and to make sure he did what he could for everyone because like the stars high above them, a person could collapse under their own weight at any moment. If they held too much in and allowed the darkness to consume their souls then their little light would die out and others would be exposed to the same darkness that consumed the one they loved so dearly. Oikawa wanted to be someone who could help lift that weight even if he was across the world from someone who needed it the most.
"Why are you all shy? You were all playful just a moment ago," Iwaizumi looked over to Oikawa, his green eyes curiously watching the man.
"B-Because..." No, don't say it. You'll only sound stupid if you say it out loud and he'll think you're all weird Tooru. "I thought you were gonna uh, I don't know, kiss me?" His voice cracked with hesitation. Why did he even say that out loud? Maybe he should just throw himself over the fence and rooftop already?
Iwaizumi began to bust out into a fit of laughter as he rolled away from Oikawa gripping his stomach, "Only in your dreams Shitty-kawa. Cigarette breath isn't my thing you know."
Shitty-kawa? Iwaizumi was still here by Oikawa's side cracking jokes and calling him these stupid names despite how stupid he sounded thinking that Iwaizumi was actually going to kiss him? "Hah," Oikawa smiled, "Hah I was so wrong about you, you're a fucking douchebag."
This was going to be a wonderful friendship wasn't it? If Oikawa ever made the man rolling around in a fit of laughter uncomfortable then why would they be up here joking around and smiling together? Oikawa allowed himself to laugh at his own foolishness finally. Maybe he was just worrying about nothing? He did tend to do that a lot. Oikawa reached a hand up into the air and traced his index finger across the stars above to create a heart with the celestial bodies. He wished for this moment to last for thousands of years longer just so that he could continue smiling like this.
He closed his fingers in over his drawing and balled it up into his fist as he squeezed his eyes shut and pulled his hand down to his chest, "You never asked me what my story was y'know."
"Hmm?" Iwaizumi wiped a tear away from his squinted eyes as he rolled back over to face the sky that they rested beneath, "I didn't have the chance to do it since you chucked your phone over the stupid fence you idiot."
Oikawa slapped a hand against his face, "God, you're right. I'm such a fucking moron for doing that, aren't I?"
"One hundred percent."
He stole a glance at his new friend and felt his cheeks warm, "Well, maybe I can tell you over a coffee up here one day if you're interested?" his breath swirled up in the air and faded.
Iwaizumi forced himself to his feet and held his hand out to Oikawa, "I think I'll take you up on that offer."
Oikawa reached his hand up to wrap his skinny fingers around Iwaizumi's wrist as the man pulled him up from the ground. He stared down at Iwaizumi with a faint smile slithering itself across his lips. He was happy. He was happy to have met this angry little man. He was delighted to be able to get to know him in the future, hopeful to create everlasting memories with him, and most of all he was thankful for not being left alone up on the rooftop tonight with his phone.
'Let's enjoy the future together, Iwaizumi Hajime.'
With that thought alone came one of the most genuine smiles to ever cross Oikawa Tooru's face for the first time in decades.
