Chapter 43
Tara was in bed reading one of the books Theon had given to her. "Tara." He said to her.
Tara looked up at him. He had a very serious expression on his face. He didn't need to say anything for Tara to know.
She put the book down, "Come sit."
Theon swallowed a lump in his throat before he sat down on the bed. He looked down at the stone floor.
"What is it?" Tara asked. She was worried. She knew it must have something to do with Yara but she was afraid to hear what it was going to be.
"Euron... he took Yara." Theon said defeatedly.
"Theon I'm-"
"No it's not just that." Theon looked up at her. He was hesitant. He didn't want to admit what he had done.
"Euron he- he was holding an ax to her throat. I was standing right in front of him." Theon shook his head, "But then it started coming back. All the nightmares and I didn't know what to do. I didn't know how I could save her. How I would be able to come back alive. And-" Theon had been starting to ramble but he stopped himself.
"I left her there Tara." Theon finally admitted, "I jumped overboard and I left her there."
"Like a coward." Theon was angry at himself. He didn't look Tara in the eyes.
Tara was at a complete loss for words. Instead, she reached out for him. She put her hand on his shoulder. He immediately shook it off and stood up angrily.
"Why do you love me Tara?" He asked. Tears were in his eyes but on the outside it was all anger.
"I'm a horrible man. I have been selfish and a coward my whole life!" Theon shook his head again, "I left my brothers, my real family. I betrayed them. I killed innocent boys! I caused a world of suffering for you and now I have left my sister. I left her to be tortured or killed or worse." Tears streamed down his cheeks.
"How can you love a coward like me?" He felt himself shaking with emotion.
Tara could feel tears welling up in her eyes but she pushed them all back, "Theon." She started calmly, "I'm not perfect either."
"I'm a coward too. I stayed at the dread fort for years. My little sister was taken from me when I was 12 and I was too much of a coward to ever go find her. I stayed in the dread fort and let people abuse me. I could have escaped. It wouldn't have been that hard." Tara shook her head.
"I have let other people control me my whole life. And I never did anything about it. I just let them." Tara finished.
She stood up now and walked towards Theon. She put her hand on cheek wiping away his tears. Even after all these times, Theon could never believe how much it soothed him. He could never believe how soft her touch was.
"But I would have never met you if I wasn't a coward. I would have never leaved that place and Ramsay if I hadn't met you." Tara said, "You give me strength I didn't know I had. That must mean something."
The anger was now draining from Theon's body. He pulled her close. Tara was glad to be in his arms.
"I have to find her." Theon said.
"You will." Tara pulled back so she could look at him, "You will make it up to her."
They held each other for a moment as they both calmed down. Theon felt better now, but not all the way. He would only feel completely better once he had his sister back.
They pulled away from each other. "What did you need to tell me?" Theon asked.
Tara bit her lip. "It's Jon."
"He said there are white walkers beyond the wall."
--
Tara made her way down to the counsel room. She knew it might be strange for her to show up, but she hated not knowing what might happen at any moment. She knew Tyrion at least liked her and that had to count for something.
Theon didn't think it would be a good idea for him to join her since Jon was sure to be there. Tara almost had to agree.
As she walked in, some glances were thrown her way. Especially since it seemed they were in the middle of something.
"Excuse me your grace, I was hoping that I could listen. I promise I'll keep quiet." Tara said.
Daenerys looked at her hand for some kind of signal. Tyrion nodded. Dany turned to her and nodded as well.
Tara stood to the side and kept her promise. She was almost surprised at how easy it had been. She'd been preparing having to explain herself.
"I thought Arya was dead." Tara didn't even realize that Jon was completely preoccupied with a scroll in his hand. "I thought Bran was dead."
"I'm happy for you." Dany replied, "You don't look happy."
Jon looked up from his thoughts. He took a quick glance at Tara which he must of only just realized that she had entered the room. Tara sheepishly looked down.
Jon continued past it, "Bran saw the Night King and his army marching towards Eastwatch. If they make it past the wall-"
"The wall has kept them out for thousands of years presumably." Varys started to say.
"I need to go home." Jon talked over him.
"You said you don't have enough men." Dany said.
"We'll fight with the men we have. Unless, you'll join us."
"And give the country to Cersei? As soon as I march away, she marches in."
"Perhaps not." Tyrion was obviously starting to think something out. Tara knew the clever was going to come out.
"Cersei thinks the army of the dead is nothing but a story made up by wet nurses to frighten children. What if we prove her wrong?" Tyrion continued.
"I don't think she'll come at my invitation." Jon retorted.
"So then bring the dead to her." Tyrion walked towards Jon. "We don't have to bring the whole army. Only one."
"Is that possible?" Davos asked. Jon looked around for a moment, "The first wight I ever saw was brought to Castle Black from beyond the wall."
"Bring her one of these things to King's Landing and show her the truth." Tyrion said.
"Anything you bring back will be useless unless Cersei grants us an audience and is somehow convinced not to murder us the second we set foot in the capital." Varys said.
"The only person she listens to is Jaime. He might listen to me." Tyrion looked over at Dany.
"And how would you get into King's Landing?"
Everyone turned to look at Davos.
"I can smuggle you in, but if the gold cloaks were to recognize you, I have to warn you. I'm not a fighter."
"I would like to come too." Tara interrupted. She couldn't believe she had. She hadn't even thought it all the way through before she said it.
Everyone had turned to look at her. "To King's Landing?" Tyrion questioned.
"Yes. I was born in flea bottom but I was stolen from my family by slavers when I was young. I haven't been able to go back since to find them." Tara explained.
"It's too dangerous, the gold cloaks could possibly recognize Theon too." Davos interrupted.
"I didn't say anything about Theon." Tara said. No one said anything in response.
Tara turned to Daenerys, "I apologize, your grace, for interrupting, but I don't know when I'll ever have the chance again to try and find them."
Daenerys took a moment. Tara was just hoping she wouldn't say no.
"Very well." She said to Tara. Tara nodded in gratitude but in the back of her head she couldn't believe what she had just done.
Dany turned to the rest of her counsel, "But, it will all be for nothing if we don't have one of these dead men."
"Fair point." Varys chimed in, "How do you propose to find one?"
No one said anything for a moment before Jorah stepped in, "With the queen's permission, I'll go North and take one."
The queen turned to face him. He continued, "You asked me to find a cure so I could serve you. Allow me to serve you." Dany was shocked.
"The free folk will help us. They know the real north better than anyone." Jon said.
"They won't follow Ser Jorah." Davos added.
"They won't have to." Everyone in the room was now looking at Jon Snow but Jon looked to Dany.
"You can't lead a raid north of the wall. You're not in the Night's Watch anymore, you're King in the North." Davos argued.
"I'm the only one here who's fought them. I'm the only one here who knows them."
"I haven't given you permission to leave." Daenerys interrupted.
"With respect, your grace, I don't need your permission. I am a king." Jon was confident in his words, "And I came here knowing that you could have your men behead me or have your dragons burn me alive. I put my trust in you, a stranger. Now I'm asking you to trust in a stranger..."
Dany wasn't breaking eye contact with him. "...because it is our best chance." Daenerys and Tyrion shared a look between eachother before Daenerys finally gave him a short nod.
