Vera's POV

"You were super shy! Oh my God! You like him too?!" Florence says laughing

I don't. Not sure yet but I don't.

"What do you expect me to do? Dude you left me alone without notice. How will I know what to say" I say defending myself.

"Forget that! You were blushing Vera.. You do." she says again.

"I do not" I say

"Okay then. He's not fine anyways" she says folding her arms

Okay okay. I might not 'like' Tobi but just look at him! His full length dark hair. His well structured face. His amazing height! He's freaking tall. He's literally playing basketball!! His amazing physique. And don't get me started with his smile.. His dimples.. His-

Snap out of it!

I take a deep breath and look at her.

"Nobody's ugly Flo." I say calmly

"Really?" she says laughing
"okay then, Steve is finer than him" she continues

She's asking for it.

"Don't want to start up anything Florence but... Are you BLIND?!! Steve looks like a fucking goblin with elv ears! You can't compare a god to an animal, it's not done that way" I say letting out a sigh

Florence winks at me smiling at me. She raises both eye brows.
Maybe I should have accepted that Steve was better than Tobi.

"okay my goddess, whatever you say. You do" she says

"Look, I don't have time for this, I do not like Tobi!"

I didn't even realise how much I was shouting.
But thank God people only heard his name.

"I heard my name?" Tobi says coming out of no where.
I just hate this universe.

"Oh she was saying she felt bad the way she talked to you on the phone that day" Florence says before I even open my mouth.
Okay, this is the only time I can say that she's a life saver..
"Ohhh. I've told you" he pauses turn only to me
His eyes...

"Its okay now. You don't have to feel bad. You were just upset then" he says smiling

I look down... Feeling my face heating up.

It can't be. No.

"Oh okay.. Glad to know" I say with a choked voice.
How sexy do I sound? I'm so stupid.

"So anyways, I heard you're having a match next Saturday?" Florence says quickly changing the topic. I mouth a "thank you" to her
She's the best.. For now though.

"Yes I am, you're now looking at your new school Captain" he says bowing his head.
Such a gentleman.
"Wowww! That's amazing! Captain." Florence says
"Congratulations.." I say looking up into his eyes.
Brown beauty.
I hate myself.
"Yeah thanks.. Would you like to come to watch me beat Roseveill high?" he asks

Roseveill??

"Of course yes. That's my former school anyways.." I say.
I feel more brave now.

"Won't you feel bad.. Like they'll probably loose. You loved that school I suppose?" he says

That school should go to hell with the people in it!

"Nahhh this is the school I love now" I say smiling

I can't believe I said that. I don't like this damn school.
Maybe I do, maybe not.

Florence and Tobi both look at me in shock.
"What?" I say smiling

"Thought you hated us actually" Tobi comments

"Well I did.. But because I didn't have friends in the past. But now, at least I have two people to call friends. Am I right?" I say weirdly

Florence screams and hugs me.
You're literally squeezing the life outta me

"Happy to know" he says
"well I have to go now.. Bye Vera" Tobi says and gives me a beaming smile.
Get your head outta the clouds will you!

I turn to look at him go.
"You did it!" Florence says bursting my cloud of thoughts
Dang it!
"Did what" I ask
"You talked to him normally.. At least it's better than the last. But you can try again" she says

"Florence what am I going to do? My old school is coming here next Saturday to play a match and i'll be there watching. I'll feel out of place. And you know.. Sallie and Davina are cheerleaders.. They'll surely come. There's a boy, Tommy, I heard he's the captain of their team.. Its going to be awkward for me"

"Calm down calm down Vera, it's going to be alright. I'll be there all the time. There's no way those two little brats will ever think of trying me after the last incident. I don't know who the hell Tommy is but I'm sure Tobi will definitely destroy their weak ass team! They don't stand a chance against us. Trust me. " she says assuring me.

Coming to think of it, Florence has been a good friend all these while.. Maybe.. Maybe I should let her into my life?
Should I tell her about my dark past?

" Are you sure Flo? " I say

" I've never been wrong, and I won't be wrong. Just exercise patience. Don't let them allow you to feel less about yourself or insecure. Who gives a fuck about them? Keep being yourself no matter what dear!"  she says

She's really... Kind.

" Thank you" I say

"Sure! What are friends for? So anyways.. My Mum isn't back from her shift at the hospital, I'm coming to your house for the mean time.. Hope you don't mind?" she asks

I haven't had anyone follow me home since.. Never..

"Of course I don't. Mrs Jones will be glad to have visitors come by. She'll love the idea"

"Who's Mrs Jones to you anyways?" Flo asks out of no where.
I pause for a second

"let's just say my Grandmother.. My weirdly young grandmother" I say laughing

"She's not young. Sixty five isn't a young age" she says

"As a grandmother, she should be wayyyy older than that" I say

She laughs
"You're right though. Wanna get going? Let's take the bus home today. I don't want to walk for fifteen long minutes" she says swinging her hands in the air lazily.

"Neon Orange is what I'm in love with right now Flo! It glows so perfectly." I say
I sure love orange.
We were walking towards the gate of 'my house'

We both enter, we walk a little but further to the main door.
I try to open it but, it's locked?
Mrs Jones didn't tell me she'll be going out today..

Luckily, I had a spare key in my bag.
I open it and we both enter.

"wowww. This sure is a huge house" Flo says looking around like a little girl.

Something's up...Mrs Jones car keys are still on the table.. Where I found it this morning. She doesn't go anywhere without her car.
But she doesn't have any book club house meeting today. Does she?

I walk to where her keys her. I look closely and my eyes spotted a note.

"What the hell?" I say
Flo comes to my right "what's that?"

"we're about to find out.." I say.
Picking up the well folded piece of paper, I open it calmly and read out the the words:

         "If you want to see your old lady again, pay us a ransom of just Five hundred Thousand Naira. Here's the number to call:09084859123. Do not disclose this to anyone or else she'll be thrown into St.Mary's River. You have five days to complete the payment."
