Gwendolyn Astor didn't care much about school. It was hard for her to care anyway, with her mom being sick. Well, it's more like she drove herself into a hole with drinking. Gwen had to take on being her mom's caregiver. She'd meal prep at the beginning of the week, and barely be home for the rest of the week. 

School was the least of her concerns. Her best friend Pope had a completely different outlook on it. He cared about school—hell, he wanted to go to med school—and really cared about his education.

Gwen and Pope were like two sides of a coin. Pope was all about success, and Gwen just wanted to enjoy life and ignore all her problems at home. They were polar opposites. But maybe that's why their friendship worked so well.

Maybe their differences were why Gwen fell in love with Pope. She tried to push away the feelings, because why would Pope ever want to be with somebody like her? They were just friends. That's all they ever would be.
