Chapter 4 - Small Talk with an Android

Puma's POV

The next day I was looking over a report when I heard footsteps from behind. Too inhuman footsteps.

"Good morning detective." Connor greeted me.

"Morning Connor." I smiled at him.

"Are you sure you don't need a day off because of what happened yesterday?"

I looked at my arm.

"I'm a bit sore, but it's no reason to miss a day."

Dad was really pissed at me yesterday, and I can imagine what he's going to say when he sees me working as if nothing happened. It was silent for a moment.

"Do you know what time the Lieutenant gets here?"

"Depends where he was the night before. We'll be lucky seeing him before noon." I say, not looking up from my report on my computer.

I saw Connor analyzing Dads' desk. I let him be, thinking it would be better for him to learn more about Dad to please him.

I sighed and placed my chin on my hands, propping my head up.

An android belonging to Carl Manfred-

I perked up at the famous painters' name. I'd been around his house a few times, and knew him, his son, and android quite well. I've made arrests for his son Leo for red ice usage, which he always managed to slither his way out of. He didn't like me very well because of that. I got back to the report.

-Carl Manfred supposedly had a fight with Leo Manfred and was destroyed by the police officers.

(A/N: alright while I was writing this I burst out laughing because of that sentence structure. I still laugh at it when I look at it today. Help. My humor is broken.)

I put my fingers against my mouth in shock. Carl's android, Markus, was very sweet, and it broke me that he was destroyed. Carl and I shared a belief for androids to have better treatment and considered each other close friends. I brought my cup of hot chocolate to my mouth, realizing it was empty. I stood up and started walking toward the food area to get another cup. Connor stood up with me.

"I can get that for you, Detective Puma." he gave me a smile and took my cup, walking away.

"Em, thank you!" I shouted after him.

I began to look over my reports again when I heard a loud mocking voice coming from the lunch area.

"Ah, it's the android that almost got shot and had to have a girl cover for it so he didn't die! How pathetic is that? And they call you an android? Aren't you supposed to work better with us humans so that you get through your investigation quicker? So far, it seems you want to wipe out all the humans in this department. Is that your plan? For androids to replace everyone?" Gavin laughed as he started strolling toward Connor. I let out a huff of anger and marched up to the lunch area.

"Ah, just a fucking plastic detective! So you Hank's drinking buddy? You bring him home when he gets too drunk to find his car? Ha, he stinks of booze."

I've had enough of Reed. I stormed straight up to him and pointed my finger straight at his chest.

"I have had enough of you trash talking my dad. I will not tolerate that kind of behavior from you. What's he done to you anyway?" He looked at me with a smirk as I yelled at him.

"Honey, move out the way, I have some unfinished business to attend to. Thank you," He tried to take my shoulders and I staggered back in disgust. He went over to Connor.

"I've never seen an android like you before. What model are you?"

"It's written on his jacket, you fucking idiot." I spat at him as I walked up to Connor and took my mug from him. He didn't object.

"You watch what you say to me, I don't want your complaints about your dad and his romance with drinking."

"I'm an RK800," Connor said, ignoring the altercation we were having. "I'm a prototype."

"A prototype?" Reed smirked. "Android detective. So machines are just... going to replace us all? Was I right? Okay. Bring me a coffee, dipshit. Get a move on!"

Connor stayed silent, still holding his professional look. I'd've imagined it was pretty easy for him to be an android. I found it... kind of cute actually.

"Hey! I gave you an order!" Gavin seemed pissed. I turned around and made myself my hot chocolate to hide my smile.

"I'm sorry, I only take orders from Lieutenant and Detective Anderson." Connor fixed his tie.

"Oh... oh..." Gavin chucked a bit and turned around quickly, turned back, and punched the android in his stomach, making Connor fall to the ground; breathing heavily.

I thought androids don't breathe. I thought, confused.

"When a human gives you an order, you obey, you got it? Now stay outta my way... 'Cause next time, you won't get off so easy." Gavin crouched up to be on Connor's level. I froze in my spot as Gavin stood up and flicked the side of his head. Connor didn't say anything. Reed walked away with the other police officer he was talking to. She didn't seem to want to get in Gavin's way.

"How can he get in your way?" I spoke up, making Gavin turn around. "Oh, I forgot the world revolves around you! How silly of me." I shook my head with a smile.

Gavin turned to say something but I shot him down.

"Yeah, go on, try to talk. Maybe one day you'll say something intelligent." I folded my arms. Reed's face twisted with anger, but his friend led him out of the lunchroom. I rushed over to Connor, who was still on the ground. He seemed to still have difficulty breathing.

"Connor, are you okay?" I helped him get up.

"He hit my regulator. Biocompoent #8457w. I am alright." He blinked rapidly, looking like he was starting to have a seizure. I was still holding onto his hand. "All systems fully operational. Everything is alright. I'll get you your hot chocolate, and then we will go." He smiled at me. Letting go of his side, which he had been clutching with his arm. Connor insisted on getting me my hot beverage despite my protests. We walked to my desk in silence, I was still fuming with anger.

Connor's POV

"Are you sure you're okay? I mean, you could have been hurt!" Puma exclaimed as she sat down at her work desk. I stood beside her.

"It's alright, Detective Puma. Androids don't feel pain. He was merely taking his anger out on me."

"You still didn't deserve it though." Puma looked up at me with a huff.

"I am replaceable, Detective."

"No, if you were to be shot, you wouldn't be the same Connor when you come back. There's always something unique about each model. And I like your personality and mindset." She muttered the last part as I gave her a smile.

"I'm merely a machine," I pushed on.

"Connor, you're not just a machine!" she looked back up at me. "Sure, you aren't a human, but you are a person. You being able to handle situations better than us humans were barely capable of remembering what we ate for breakfast. That makes you special to our investigation." She gave me a warm smile and continued working.

Her smile. I thought. What's so special about her smile? My pump regulator sped up as I asked myself. With a frown, I ran a diagnostic.

Lieutenant Anderson got back thirty-seven minutes and fifty-three seconds later. He was shocked to see Puma sitting in her workplace.

"Lia, what the hell are you doing here? I told you to take the day off, why do you never listen?!" He raged out at her. I processed the information. Lieutenant was quite an overprotective parent, I wonder if something happened between them in their family that I should know about?

"Dad! Calm down, it's just a scratch-"

"Just 'a scratch'?! You tell me that a bullet piercing your body is just a fucking scratch? Go home, now!"

"I'm old enough to make my own decisions," Puma said calmly. "How about a compromise? I'm going to stay here, and unless my arm starts to hurt again, or I get injured, I will immediately head back to my house and take a break from work."

Lieutenant sighed and closed his eyes for a second. "Alright. Fine. You win. Just don't forget what happened last time." He said the last part warningly glaring at her. I saw Puma's stress levels go up higher from thirty percent to sixty.

What had happened last time?

"I- I need to go, I'll be right back. Uh, bathroom." she pointed to the bathroom and ran there. The Lieutenant let out another sigh and sat at his workplace. I looked at him, trying to understand what might have happened.

"What are you looking at?" Lieutenant said after a while, not looking up from his paperwork.

"You, Lieutenant," I stated. He stared at me for a long time but shook his head and got back to work.

"Fucking androids." I heard him mutter.

(A/N: Connor you're so pure)

"Lieutenant, can I ask you a personal question?"

"Shoot." he shrugged.

"You seem to have an unusual relationship with Detective Puma Anderson. Why is that?"

"Why is that? She's my daughter, and I care about her. Or is it strange for you androids to take care of others?"

"No, it isn't. Thank you. Lieutenant, do you know why she gave herself the name, 'Puma'? I thought it was a little odd to be named after an animal."

"Well, it's a crazy story, you won't believe me. But, you're an android. Well, it wouldn't really make a difference- just stop asking me questions."

"Understood."

"Hey... I'm back." Puma muttered and sat down at her desk. I scanned her.

LIA CAT ANDERSON

Age: 21

Born: November 11, 2017

Status: Cold, depressed, lost

Weight: 125.4 lbs. (Underweight)

Height: 5'8 (taller than average)

She's gone to the bathroom because she needed to cry. What happened? I wondered.

"Hank! Puma! In my office!" Captain Fowler, Lieutenant, and Detective Andersons' boss yelled out at them.

Puma's POV

I'd just gotten out of the bathroom from crying about Cole. Why does Dad know exactly what buttons to push for me to cry?

"Hank! Puma! In my office!" Captain Fowler called from his glass office.

I'd be a little paranoid if I had to work there. I smiled to myself as I walked with Dad, followed by Connor; who looked concerned about me. I wonder if he scanned what I'm feeling right now. I hope he didn't, I really don't like it when he does that.

Fowler sat back in his chair as Connor closed the door after us.

"I've got ten new cases involving androids on my desk every day. We've always had isolated incidents, old ladies losing their android maids and that kind of crap. But now, we're getting reports of assaults and homicides, like the guy last night. This isn't just CyberLife's problem anymore. It's now a criminal investigation and we've gotta deal with it before the shit hits the fan. I want you two to investigate these cases and see if they're any links."

"Why us?" Dad asked. "Why do we gotta be the ones to deal with this shit? I'm the least qualified cop in the country to handle this case! I know Jack's shit about androids, Jeffrey! I can barely change the settings on my own phone!"

"Everyone's overloaded. I think you're perfectly qualified for this type of work." Fowler raised his voice.

Dad stood up. "Bullshit! The truth is: no one wants to investigate these fucking androids and you left my partner and I holding the bag."

Partners, Dad. Partners. I thought to myself.

"CyberLife sent over an android to help with the investigation," I said. "Connor is a state-of-the-art prototype, so he can help us!"

"No fuckin' way! We don't need another partner, and certainly not this plastic prick!"

I slouched my shoulders to make myself smaller.

"Hank, you are seriously starting to piss me off!" Jeffery yelled."You are a police Lieutenant. You're supposed to do what I say and shut your goddamn mouth!"

"You know what my goddamn mouth has to say to you?" Dad snarled. My eyes went wide as I stared at him. Dad isn't the type of person to talk back to people, even though he can be a pain in the ass sometimes with his 'hard to please' state and everything.

"Okay. Okay. I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that because I don't want to add any more files to your disciplinary folder, 'cause it already looks like a fucking novel! This conversation is over!"

"Jeffery! Jesus Christ! Why are you doing this to me? You know how much I hate these fuckin' things!" He pointed to Connor. "Why are you doin' this to me?"

I softly shrugged my shoulders with a smile, while looking toward the android who could hear every word Dad said about him. He politely smiled back out of his programming. He didn't seem bothered by my dad's words at all.

"Listen, I've had enough of your bitching. Either you do your job or you hand in your badge. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a job to do." Jeffery turned back to his computer.

Dad gave a huff and stormed out, leaving Connor and me behind.

"I'm sorry for what Dad did back there. He's a good cop, we both know it. But, you know, after everything that happened... " I trailed off, looking away.

"Yeah, yeah. But I trust that you keep your father together. You're a good cop too, Puma."

"Of course, I'll do everything I can." I softly placed my hand on Connor's upper back and we both walked out of Fowler's office.

Dad looked angry and pissed off as he sat at his desk.

"I get the impression my presence causes you inconvenience, Lieutenant. I'd like you to know I'm very sorry about that."

Dad ignored him, so Connor continued talking with his cute professional smile.

"In any case, I'd like you to know I'm very happy to be working with you and your daughter. I'm sure we'll make a great team."

I smiled at Connor. I'd want to know what it's like to be an android. Doing nothing but your mission, being able to analyze things in the blink of an eye, feeling no emotion, and nothing to worry about. Nothing to worry about. I repeated, looking over at Dad. What is it like to not feel anything for those you love?

"Is there a desk anywhere I could use?" Connors' voice brought me back.

"There's the one next to mine." I offered. "No one's using that one." I pointed to the desk to the left of mine, diagonal to Dad's.

We sat down as Connor tried to make small talk. I put my cup of hot chocolate to my lips as I listened.

"You have a dog, right?"

Dad raised an eyebrow. "How do you know that?"

Just like Sherlock Holmes. I giggled to myself.

"The dog hairs on your chair," Connor stated with a smile. "I like dogs. What's your dogs' name?"

"What's it to you?" Dad looked up to see Connor invested in the conversation. "Sumo. I call him Sumo."

Connor turned to me. "You also have a dog."

"And a cat, yes." I couldn't help grinning. "Though we don't share the same dog. We live in different houses if you haven't concluded that already."

"I have." Connor was silent for a moment. "Do you listen to 'Knights of the Black Death'? I really like that music. It's... full of... energy." He said, looking nowhere particular.

Dad and I stopped working to stare at Connor.

"You, listen to heavy metal?" Dad asked in shock.

"Well, I don't listen to music as much," Connor admitted, looking down guiltily at his new desk. "But I'd like to." He looked at Dad, his eyes sparkling.

Talk about the Turing Test. He's like a completely normal human if you ask me.

After a few moments, he asked. "Are you a Detroit Gears fan? Denton Carter scored fifty-three percent of his shots from the three point-line yesterday. Did you see the game?"

Dad glared at Connor. "That's the game I was watching at the bar last night."

"Oh," Connor said, slightly dejected at the comment. I sighed softly before returning back to work, listening to Connor and Dad out the corner of my ear.

"Do you like them, Detective?" I turned around.

"What?"

"Do you like the Detroit Gears team?"

"Eh, I'm not much of a sports person, really. Usually, go onto old National Geographic shows to look at wild animals." I laughed sheepishly. "I was going to be a zoologist or a vet, did you know?"

"Yes, and it was a good decision to be a detective. Unlike what happened yesterday. Dad glared at me from his desk.

"Dad, I'm okay. I told you it's nothing. I'll be better in no time." I gave him a confident smile.

We all slipped into silence, which Connor interrupted yet again.

"Have you known Captain Fowler for long?"

"Yeah... too long." Hank looked over to Jeffery's office.

"If you have any files on deviants, I'd like to take a look at them," Connor said brightly.

I pointed at the androids screen he was facing. "Terminal's on your desk right there, it should have all the files."

Connor logged in, and I was bothered again after a couple of seconds. "Detective Puma?"

"Yes?" I peeked over to look at Connors' screen, which made us touch shoulders. Connor and I blushed our different colors as Dad rolled his eyes at us. On his screen was a text box saying:

We want to make sure you're not a robot:

Followed by a box next to the words.

I'm not a robot.

I laughed with a smile.

"What do I do here?" He stared at me in confusion.

"Here." I put my hand over his own, due to his hand being on the mouse.

"Hands off," Dad said warningly. I stuck my tongue out for a split second before contradicting my dad's words. I took Connor's hand to check the box, and clicked 'Okay'.

"See? That wasn't so hard." I laughed. "I wonder who did that."

"I am a robot though. I'm a machine." Connor stated. His innocence made me smile and shake my head.

"Just look through the files." I giggled.

Connor fixated on his screen a bit longer before he started analyzing the files. He spoke up again.

"Two hundred four-three files... the first dates back nine months... it all started in Detroit... and quickly spread across the country..." Connor looked up. "An AX400 is reported to have assaulted a man last night. That could be a good starting point for our investigation."

He stood up and approached Dad, who avoided his gaze and began doing something else. I could really tell he didn't want to be here right now.

"Ugh... Jesus." Dad muttered as Connor stood beside him.

"I understand you're facing personal issues, Lieutenant. But... you need to move past them, and-"

"Hey! Don't talk to me like you know me. I'm not your friend and I don't need your advice, okay?" Dad snapped.

What was going on with him today?

Connor seemed a bit sad at that information but bowed his head. He put his hands on the side of his desk and lowered himself to be at Dads' sitting level.

"I've been assigned this mission Lieutenant. I didn't come here to wait until you feel like working." He said coldly.

Uh oh. I looked up from my work, eyes snapping wide open as Dad had finally had enough.

He stood up and grabbed Connor by his jacket pushing him against the wall.

I gasped. "Dad!" He didn't pay attention.

"Listen asshole, if it were up to me, I'd throw the lot of you in a dumpster, and set a match to it. So stop pissing me off!" He growled. "Or things are gonna get nasty."

"DAD!" I yelled out, louder this time, getting up from my seat. "Put Connor down, he's done nothing to you to deserve that!"

"Don't make me push you up against a wall, Lia Anderson." Dad turned toward me. I slid back into my seat, feeling my face heating up.

"L-lieutenant." I heard Chris behind us, who eased the tension. "Uh, sorry to disturb you... I have some info on that AX400 that attacked the guy last night. It's been spotted in Ravendale District."

"We're on it," Dad said, giving Connor a death glare before storming off. I sighed sadly, walking over to Connor.

"I'm sorry about Dad, he... doesn't like androids all that much, you might've figured." I gave a forced laugh. "I'm sure he'll see how great you are and the three of us will make quite a team."

"I hope so too Detective Puma." Connor smiled professionally and fixed his tie.

"Are you alright?" I asked while we were walking out.

"Yes, why do you ask?"

I turned to him in shock.

"Well, you were sorta pushed into a wall forcefully."

"Oh, that. It's alright, Detective. Don't worry about me."
