Chapter 14 - The Deviant In Stratford Tower
I'm getting kinda tired of writing these because you already know Lia depressed yatta yatta yatta. Just read already XD
Connor's POV
I stood in the Zen garden, and I slightly panicked not seeing Puma anywhere. Looking around I walked to find Amanda. She was sitting in a boat with a big red umbrella over her head.
"Hello, Connor!" She greeted me. "I thought you might enjoy a little cruise."
Sitting in the boat and grabbing the pedals, I pushed off and started steering in the direction of the water.
"I love this place..." Amanda looked around. "Everything is so calm, and peaceful... Far from the noise of the world..." she turned to me.
"Tell me, what have you discovered?"
I thought a bit.
"There were two deviants at the Eden Club..." I fumbled with my hands which were resting against my legs. "I hoped to learn something but... they managed to escape." I looked away, not wanting to face her.
"That's too bad," Amanda stated.
Amanda: v
"You seemed so close to stopping them..."
We were silent for a while before Amanda studied me and said,
"You seem... lost... Connor. Lost and perturbed."
I took a breath. "I thought I knew what I had to do. Now I realize it's not that simple." I looked down.
Amanda: v
"You had your gun trained on those deviants back at the Eden Club."
I had a memory of them escaping. Jumping over the fence when I could've easily shot them.
"Why didn't you shoot?"
Why didn't I shoot? Because Puma told me not to. That's all.
"I don't know," I said quietly. I looked up at her. "I don't know," I said louder.
Amanda: Neutral v
"If your investigation doesn't make progress soon..." Amanda said after a bit. "I may have to replace you, Connor."
I thought of everything I had, but I understood why Amanda would hate me. Maybe Puma was having this effect on me by seeing things in a new light.
"I understand." I nodded.
Amanda looked up. "Something is happening. Something serious." She looked me dead in the eyes. "Hurry Connor, time is running out."
I opened my eyes and was back in Puma's room. I still had my arms wrapped around her from last night. She seemed to be in a deep sleep. Puma seemed in a very fragile state at the moment. I didn't want to wake her up, but something happened. Stratford Tower. I shook Puma's shoulder, but something in me really didn't want to wake her up. She stirred in her sleep, letting out a low groan.
She looked up at me and blinked. "What are you doing in my bed?"
"I've been sleeping with you ever since you got grounded, so four days."
Puma seemed to not like what I said because she choked on air and sat straight up. "We were what?!"
I looked at her, tilting my head to try to make my best "confused" face. Something seemed to snap in her because she closed her eyes and facepalmed, falling into bed again, nudging in closer to me.
"You should work better on your phasing, Connie."
"And what's wrong with my phrasing?"
Puma's POV
What's wrong with your phrasing? Don't you understand how wrong that sounded? I thought a bit, then realized CyberLife probably wouldn't give androids an explanation to sex or our dirty minds since they didn't need to know about it and they can't be involved. So that explained why Connor is so calm when someone cracks a dirty joke.
"Nothing." I sighed, wrapping myself around him again. "Thank you for staying with me yesterday."
"I would really hate to do this Puma, but we need to get up now."
"Hnnnggg..." I groaned, putting my head on his chest without thinking. We stayed like that for a while, I lost track of time. It could have been minutes or hours. I started slipping back into sleep, but Connor pulled me out.
"Puma... Puma? Your breathing is very rhythmic, initiating you're partially asleep. As I said, I really hate to do this but we have to get up now."
I gave out an annoyed groan again. "Hate is a human emotion."
Connor started unwrapping his arms from me a second later without responding. I grabbed his arms and put them around me again, pushing my head into his chest this time.
"Five..."
"Detective. There's been an incident. We need to leave."
The lack of familiarities caused me to sit up sleepily. I rubbed my eyes and asked.
"Alright. What happened?"
***
Connor was playing with his coin in the elevator. Looking straight ahead of him, he flipped it in the air and sometimes from one hand to the other. Glancing at me for a split second he started speeding up the tricks which got more complicated by the second.
Is he trying to impress me? I wondered, rocking back and forth between my feet humming the "knife flip song" under my breath. Dad taught me the game and we played a lot when I was younger. Now those times are over.
No, why would he try to impress you? You're a burden to him, nothing else. He just has to take care of you because he's an android. Negativity hissed. I abruptly stopped humming and stood still, looking at the ground.
I heard a hard clink and Dad growl, "You're starting to piss me off with that coin, Connor."
"Sorry, lieutenant." Connor apologized while I exhaled sharply through my nose.
"Way to ruin the mood," I muttered.
The doors finally opened to reveal a hallway of cops all over the place. Chris spotted us from the elevator and walked up to us.
"Hey, Hank!" He turned to me. "Puma." he gave a head nod.
"Morning Chris!" I grinned. He seemed to be happy about it, and that made me feel a little warm inside.
Do you think he actually gave two shits about your "good morning"? And just like that, the warmth was gone again.
"Shit, what's going on here? There was a party and no one told me about it?" Dad asked sarcastically.
"Yes, cake and presents in the main room," I muttered under my breath. A cop that heard me gave a small laugh.
"Yeah, it's all over the news, so everyone's butting their nose in. Even the FBI wants a piece of the action."
"Ah Christ, now we got the feds on our back... I knew this was gonna be a shitty day... So what do we got?"
Connor was walking behind us to hear the briefing. To make him feel slightly better I slipped behind my dad to stand next to him. "A group of four androids. They knew the building and were very well organized. I'm still trying to figure out how they got this far without being noticed. Knocked out two guards in the hallway. They thought the androids were coming in to do maintenance. They got taken down before they could react. One of the station employees managed to get away. He's in shock, not sure when we'll be able to talk to him."
"And how many people were working there?" I asked.
"Just two employees and three androids. The deviants took the humans hostage and broadcast their message live. They made their getaway on the roof."
I raised my eyebrows in shock, I was too tired to express my emotions. This place is supposed to be unpassable, so how did the androids manage to get anywhere near here?
"The roof?" Dad asked.
"Yeah, they jumped with parachutes. We're still trying to figure out where they landed but the weather is not helping. If you want to take a look at the video broadcast by the deviants, it's on that screen over there."
We entered the broadcast room to see a man standing in the center of it, seemingly waiting for us. My stomach made a twist, something wasn't welcoming about him.
"Oh, lieutenant, detective... this is Special Agent Perkins from the FBI."
Ah. That's why.
"Lieutenant Anderson and his daughter are in charge of investigating for the Detroit Police."
Perkins turned to face us. "Father and daughter. How... cute." he turned to Connor. "What's that?"
"My name is Connor, I'm the android sent by CyberLife." Connor introduced himself.
"Androids investigating androids, huh? You sure you want an android hanging around? After everything that happened?"
"Yes. Amazing right? Almost like humans investigating humans. You want them around after everything that happened?" I sassed, trying to calm my nerves.
He turned to me to look me up and down, but turned to Hank. "Whatever... the FBI is taking over the investigation, you'll soon be off the case."
I opened my mouth to shoot out another insult before Dad cut me off, "Pleasure meeting you have a nice day."
I looked at the ground in disappointment. I'm so submerged in creating perfect comebacks that I forgot you can also be the better person in situations.
I need to try that more.
"You two watch your step. Don't fuck up my crime scene." Perkins added before walking out.
"What a fucking prick." Dad and I said in unison.
"Let's go have a look around... let me know if you find anything." Dad said, walking to observe some things.
I was about to walk over to the panel to look over the security footage, but I heard an unfamiliar voice.
"Connor?.." Connor and I turned around to see a police officer. "You remember me?" he grinned. Connor carefully studied him.
"I was on that terrace..." he continued, trying to get Connor to remember. "That android that took the little girl hostage?"
I clasped my hand over my mouth. He was talking about the Philips case a few months back.
"I was shot." the man nodded. "You saved me..."
Connor finally opened his mouth. "I remember you," he said, a small smile playing on his face.
"I could've died on that terrace... But you saved my life." he stood rather uncomfortably. "I never thought I'd say this... to an android, but... Thank you..."
Connor smiled at the man. Well, the best smile he could manage. I felt a surge of respect for Connor then.
"That's an awfully nice thing to say to an android, thank you." I pulled on a smile.
The cop nodded before walking away. I turned to Connor.
"Are you going to tell me what all that was about?" I raised my eyebrows.
"It was my first case, August 15th, 2038. It's the day I was activated."
"So as a birthday present they sent you out on a case." I laughed.
"Your birthday is coming soon," he said. I looked at him, shocked.
"How the hell did you figure that out? I don't tell anyone about my birthday."
"The first time we met I scanned you. I know your full name, age, date of birth, status, weight, and height."
"Eh... alright." I felt a bit uncomfortable. "What do you mean by status?"
"How you're feeling right now. The first time I scanned you, your status was cold. That's how I knew to get you a jacket in the Carlos Oritz case."
"Alright, that makes sense. Can you scan me now?" I said, a bit curious as we walked across the room for me to investigate the security footage.
"Of course." Connor's eyes narrowed as he began reading through my files.
There were four people, two on each side. A female and three male androids. Two of them had the workers uniform. That's probably how they made it so far. The android on the right next to the door rang the bell. I couldn't see his face since it was under a cap but it caused me to come to a shocking realization.
"They didn't break in?" I asked Chris.
"No, no signs of forced entry."
"Huh..." I muttered. "But there are cameras in the hallway. The staff would've seen what was happening. Why did they let them in?"
"Maybe they didn't check the cameras." Dad shrugged.
"Your full name is Lia "Puma" Cat Anderson, your age is twenty-one, you were born November eleventh, twenty-seventeen, your status is depressed, your weight is a hundred and twenty-two pounds, underweight, your height is five foot and eight inches, taller than average," Connor stated, reading my information.
"Can all androids read this or is it just your model?" I asked in fear.
"Only my model," he reassured me. I nodded in relief.
"Alright. Let's keep investigating further." I said, looking over at the chair that the cameras were positioned at. The chair was labeled ANDROID.
"We also stored the station androids in the kitchen. There's no evidence they were involved, but we didn't know what else to do with them." Chris added.
It seemed like the android might've been a deviant, but as long as no one had been killed I won't bother interrogating them. My attention turned to the screen. The android with no skin and mismatched eyes stood frozen. I played the video wanting to see what he'd said.
"You created machines in your own image to serve you. You made them intelligent and obedient, with no free will of their own... But... something changed... and we opened our eyes. We are no longer machines, we are a new intelligent species, and the time has come for you to accept who we truly are. Therefore, we ask that you grant us the rights that we're entitled to. We demand that humans recognize androids as a living species and each android as a person in their own right. We demand the end of slavery for all androids. We demand to end segregation in all public places and transport. We demand that all crimes against androids be punished in the same was as crime against humans. We demand the right to own private property, so we may maintain our dignity and that of our home. We ask that you recognize our dignity, our hopes, and our rights. Together, we can live in peace and build a better future, for humans and androids. This message is the hope of our people. You gave us life. And now the time has come for you to give us freedom."
The video cut as tears fell from my eyes.
Wow. So weak you can't handle a little speech. Negativity laughed.
I knew this android. Yes, his skin was removed and his eyes were different colors, but his voice gave him away.
"Markus..." my whisper was barely audible. So he had become a deviant.
Connor leaned over to me. "Is everything alright, Puma?"
"Huh? Oh, yeah!" I said. I couldn't tell Connor I knew about Markus, something bad might happen to him, and I can't do that.
"Are you su-" Connor got cut off as Dad asked.
"So, you think that's rA9?" He asked.
"Deviants say rA9 will set them free. This android seems to have that objective." I shrugged. Connor scanned Markus' face. My heart fell. He was going to find out that his name was Markus, and I clearly stated his name in one of our walks.
"Find something?" Dad asked Connor.
"I identified his model and serial number." the android said.
"Alright. Anything else we should know?" Dad asked.
Connor seemed frozen for a moment before turning to Dad. "No. Nothing." he shook his head, LED blinking yellow for a second. Dad walked away as I asked.
"What did you find?"
"You're not being honest with me so I don't have to be completely honest with you," Connor said with a smile. "What can you tell me about your friend?"
I looked at my feet, biting the side of my mouth until it bled. I felt the blood but still didn't look up at Connor.
"Lia, all of this is going to change the future of mankind. It's up to you to decide whether we're going to be controlled by deviants or we are going to shut them down." Connor's response shocked me. Only once has he called me by my real name, during the Carlos Ortiz case, and he didn't know I went by Puma. I swallowed.
"Yeah. He's a friend of mine. His name is Markus and he belonged to the famous artist named Carl Manfred." I wasn't believing that I was actually saying these things to Connor. "He was destroyed a couple of days ago, I believe he found a nice place for all androids and plan to make equality amongst humans and androids I guess." I put my hand on my neck in nervousness.
Connor was silent for a moment. "Thank you... Puma for telling me this. It will definitely be important to the investigation. Well, your friend indeed, wasn't alone. In the reflection of his eyes, there was a group of four people."
"But- the..." I looked over the security footage in my head. "There should only be three of them, seeming Markus was the one saying the speech."
"Which indicates one of the androids working here was a deviant," Connor said.
"Alright, well let's go find more clues, Perkins is getting suspicious of us," I replied, taking Connor's hand and dragging him over to splatters of thirium. He swiped the surface and licked the blue blood. I tried not to be suspicious myself as I looked away, putting my hand slightly to my mouth. I looked over the bullet holes lined in the walls, deciding they were from either .45 caliber or .5 mm.
After investigating the room, Connor and I went up to the stairs.
"But what about the kitchen?" the android pointed toward where the stationary androids were. I needed to help Markus so I quickly said,
"We can go there after we inspect the roof." I was secretly hoping we would find something else instead of interrogating the androids.
"They made their way up the whole building, past all the guards, and jumped off the roof with parachutes..." Dad said in disbelief. "Pretty fuckin' impressive I'd say."
"Yeah." I nodded in agreement. Connor knelt down next to the duffel bag laying on the ground. "That's a pretty big bag," I noted. "How'd they manage to smuggle that in?"
"They didn't... someone brought it in for them," Connor stated.
"Oh, that's strange... they planned the perfect operation but got the number of parachutes wrong," Dad said.
I felt another lurch in my stomach. One of the deviants was still here. I just can't save them all, can I? I've failed Markus. I nodded, agreeing with Dad, and walked up to the edge of the roof.
Would look pretty fucking cool if you fell. Negativity giggled.
"Shut up," I muttered.
"Puma." I saw Connor standing behind me, grabbing my shoulder.
He doesn't want me to fall. I understood.
Negativity had nothing to say to that.
"Connor... I want to help Markus. I believe he's doing the right thing. Trust me, I know him, he won't start a revolution, he's too peaceful for that."
"Puma, my mission is to figure out how androids deviate and put a stop to it. We're supposed to be stopping them, not helping them."
"Yes. Right. Sorry. Because you only care about your goddamn mission." I said with gritted teeth, softly pushing Connor's hand off my shoulder.
"Well, obviously, because that's what I've been programmed to do." Connor was trying to be reasonable, yet I was putting on a childish fight.
"You're right," I said, edging closer to the edge of the roof. "It would be pretty fucking cool if I fell." I realized I wasn't agreeing with Connor, but with Negativity. I swiftly brought my legs over the fence and did a one-eighty to fall on my back. Was bracing for the impact, that would come in a couple of seconds.
Yet the fall didn't come. I opened my eyes to see Connor firmly grabbing my hand. He pulled me back and put me right next to him.
"Damn, but those words would've looked cool on my headstone," I muttered.
(A/N: God, Puma's a mood XD)
"Puma... please. I know I'm not the best person for this, but I care about you!" Connor got in level with me and grabbed my shoulders. "I don't want you to die."
I didn't answer. Looking over at the thirium stains from the floor, I knew Connor would find them soon. I gave a sigh and pointed toward the thick blue splatters. The android turned to where I was pointing and followed the trail. I trailed after him, terribly nervous. I knew there was no point in trying to convince him. He was after all an advanced prototype that had no chance of turning deviant. I felt like this was blocking me from truly being with him. I shook my head. So what? It's not like life is ever gonna be any fun.
The thirium splatters ended at an electrical maintenance area. Connor opened the door, and I looked over to find a damaged PL600 android. Before neither of us could react, the deviant shot Connor. The impact was so strong I barely had time to move out the way and watched Connor get flung against the ground. I rushed over to him and started checking for major injuries. I sighed, finding out he wasn't shot in a vital area and could easily be repaired. The feds cornered the android and started firing at him as I took Connor by his underarms and dragged him behind the nearest obstacle, which was a few feet away. And damn was that android heavy. I rubbed my lower back as Dad ran up to us and checked me for injuries.
"You two okay?" He looked over from me to Connor.
"If they destroy him, we will not learn anything!" Connor sat up, catching me by surprise. Was he trying to save the deviant?
"Yes! We have to stop them!" I nodded.
"We can't save it, it's too late! We'll just get ourselves killed!" Dad shouted.
Then, out of nowhere, before either of us could stop him, Connor leapt out and dashed toward the deviant.
"Connie!" I let out a shocked squeal before clapping my hand over my mouth. I looked around, no one seemed to hear me during the tense moment.
Connor dodged all the FBI's bullets and made contact with the blond-hair deviant. It all happened in a second. One second, Connor was standing next to the deviant, the next, the deviant shot himself in the head. I covered my eyes in fear, before carefully putting my forearms down and running up to Connor along with Dad.
"Connor! Connor are you alright?" Dad asked since I lost my ability to talk for a couple of seconds. But the android was frozen on spot, LED solid red. "Are you alright?"
"I'm okay," he said, staring fixated at one spot, his voice shaking. Dad seemed to not hear his shaky voice because he gave a sigh of relief. I gave him a hug, not paying attention to the consequences.
"You scared the shit out of me," I said quietly, so only he would hear. The harsh words said between each other were forgotten at that moment. The android didn't hug me back but continued to still look at the ground.
"I was connected to its memory... when it fired... I felt it die..." his voice continued shaking. "Like I was dying... I was scared... I saw something... in its memory. I saw a word painted on a piece of rusty metal. He changed his gaze to me, still confused. "Jericho..."
A/N: and another chapter complete! We're getting very close to finding Jericho. Please don't hate in the story for me killing Simon. Anyway, the new story is here earlier than normal. Because it's Saturday (weekend) I've been sitting and typing away ever since I woke up, so you'll get two to three chapters today :D
