5. Time To Dance
I ran off of the bus and into the house,"Mom! We only have..." I checked my watch, "Four and a half hours!" I headed upstairs to get ready for the dance with Brendon. He was picking me up at seven and I had to look my absolute best. Usually, I look like a potato but tonight I was going to blow the whole school away, or at least whoever would pay attention to me.
After showering, using way too much lotion and shaving my entire body, my mom was curling my hair and rambling. I stopped breathing and sighed, "Do you really mind Brendon that much, I mean he is my date to the dance." She placed her hand on my shoulder,"You can't be a baby forever, and if you truly like him that much I can't stop you. "
"I don't like him. We're friends." I said playing with an uncurled section of hair. "Stop lying to yourself," she said in a monotone fashion. Well. He isn't the ugliest guy I've ever seen, I'll give him an 8.8 out of 10. He tries to keep me smiling, and is there when I need him. And he did ask me to the dance...as a friend. "I don't know if he likes me back. He treats me as a buddy, not a girlfriend." I heard a small giggle from my mother as she wrapped the curling iron around my hair.
"Sweetie, he's here!" My mom shouted. "Send him up!" I said through the door. I went into the bathroom to reveal my outfit to him. A cranberry red dress that came mid-way above my knees with black heels and silver jewelry. My hair was in loose curls and I had on nude makeup to match.
I heard the door open and I took a deep breath, smiling like a child. "Madylin?" I stepped out of the bathroom and spun around for him, still grinning. He matched my smile and walked over to me,"You look great! Beautiful even." Wow. He thought I was beautiful. Wait. You're blushing. Stop. Complement him too! Um... "You don't look too bad yourself. Handsome even." He was wearing black pants and a red shirt that matched the color of my dress with a black vest on top of that.
To my surprise, he put his arm around my waist and was ready to walk me down the stairs. "Are we going to have fun tonight?" he asked, tightening his grip a bit.I started blushing again, "Of course." He opened the door and we stepped out to the top of the stairs together. My mom was grinning like an idiot as she took pictures of us. "You two look so good!" my dad said as we walked downstairs,"No later than 10:30." I got pulled in for a hug and kiss on the cheek before he turned me over to my mother for a photo session.
Brendon took my hand and led me into the loud, school gym before Rebecca ran up to me. "No. Not you two," she cackled,"I cant-I won't. Oh gosh" Brendon pushed her a little,"We're just here so we don't have to look lonely. Don't spread any rumors." Her laughing slowed a little before she took my hand and lead me across the dark room.
"He asked you to the dance? Girl, you better hope he's up for you."
I groaned,"He doesn't like me like that. He likes me as a friend."
"Well, I heard him talking to Kevin and...he's been lying to you. He wants to go out with you. That's why he asked you to this dance."
I hesitated and thought for a moment, he wouldn't. "Wow. Next, I'm going to be crowned queen and have a bucket of blood poured on me, won't I?"
A ballad started and she smirked,"Go dance with him see what he does." I stomped my foot and went to find him. He was talking Kevin, his confession booth apparently. I walked up to him and held his hand, hoping he would take the hint. He looked down at our interlocked hands and smiled. A smile that if I wasn't focusing on him I would never have seen.
I pulled him away from his friend and towards me as I wrapped my arms around his neck. He softly put his arms around my back as we rocked back and forth. I rested my head on his chest, just listening to his slightly raised heartbeat. We stayed like that for a few moments, but it could have been forever and I wouldn't mind. His hand went up and stroked my cheek, making me look up into his big brown eyes.He gave a smile smaller than the first as he barely whispered.,"I think I love you."
"I feel ya." I whispered making us both chuckle. He ran his hand through my dark hair before closing his eyes and bringing his lips to mine. It feels...right...like this was meant to happen...like he was perfect...like we were perfect...together. He pulled away and we looked into each other's eyes once more before he gave me a quick peck. I layed my head on his chest and sighed,"I could get used to this."
