1. The Street Where We Began
Monday. Possibly the worst day of the week. No, definitely the worst day of the week. I woke up with a dry and sore throat from my sinus infection and my hair caught in the bracelet I forgot to take off last night. After pulling the beads out of my hair, I took a shower and made my way downstairs. I sat at the table and poured some cereal before I realized, homework. I totally forgot my science vocabulary webs.
My mom made her way down the stairs singing an old show tune, happy as could be.She was always a happy lady, easy-going and fun. Until I got a bad grade. "Madilyn, do you have everything you need for school, honey?" She asked pouring cups of coffee for us. "Yep," I lied,"Even more," I said sipping the mug she handed me. I twisted my hair, a nervous habit, and grabbed my bookbag before getting on the bus. Mondays.
After doing my homework on the bus, and waiting in the gym to be dismissed, I still wasn't done. I tossed my hoodie in my locker and leaned against the locker, praying for my teacher not to ask for our assignment. Unlikely. My silent cry for help was interrupted by some guy slamming into the locker next to me. My eyes still closed, he leaned in and whispered into my ear. "Hey babe, your eyes are as blue as the sea I dumped my ex's body in."
My eyes shot open,"They're brown, Brendon." He laughed a little, "at least laugh I hurt my rib for that joke." he took his arm off the lockers and rubbed his side. I gave a fake laugh and punched him in the arm. "What's wrong Mick? You seem stressed," he said leaning next to me. I don't know why he calls me Mick, but I kind of like it. "School," I sighed. He opened his locker, got his science notebook and handed it to me with a goofy smile on his face."Mickey, where would you be without me." "Harvard."
Homeroom was an interesting very place. Mr. Jackson usually put pop quizzes on the white board for when we get into class. "What's number one," Rebecca said sitting next to me. and getting out her paper. "Resistance... I think." Mr. Jackson walked in the room,"No talking. If you talk I must assume you are cheating." We usually talked anyway. He was young but just about half deaf. Rebecca was a trouble-maker, but she keeps me on my toes.
"So I asked Keven why he wouldn't play against me and just shrugged. He shrugged. I'll shrug him if he shrugs again." Rebecca said while we worked together on a project." When is the next volleyball game?" I asked fiddling with my charm bracelet. I had had the bracelet since I was twelve, and everyone important in my life had given me a charm except Brendon. We met in freshman year by being paired up in English. We knew each other's parents, fears, secrets, everything. "Hey." I snapped out of my trance,"What?" "Tomorrow at six."
I don't see Brendon again until fifth-period keyboarding, which is definitely the best class of the day. Don't get me wrong, it was boring and we didn't do any work, but Brendon and I sat next to each other and that's a recipe for trouble. We were talking about his new band when Mrs.Carson came over to us,"One of you move. You talk every day." I was about to get up and go with a heavy sigh when Brendon lightly put his arm over me to keep me seated."I'll go. I respect your decision Mrs. Ca- oh I don't feel well." He laid down on the desk and 'had a seizure'. Roughly ten seconds later, with the whole class laughing at him, I knew what I had to do. Leaping out of my seat I yelled,"Oh my goodness, someone save him!" I started pressing on his chest while counting doing CPR. After the first six times I hit him, he jumped up and hugged me."Now how would separate me from the woman who just saved my life?" "Go to the hallway." We both gave each other a smirk and went outside.
"You comin' to my rehearsal tonight?" The man of the hour asked tossing his referral into a trash can sitting in the hall. "Yeah, I guess." I sighed messing with my deep red nail polish. If my mom found out about this I was dead. "You guess? I need to know so in can prepare. We've never played an audience before," he said sitting behind me in our next class. "You have a band that's never played a venue?" He shrugged. This was going to be a long day.
