Penelope is the Best

"Welcome, class. Today, we are continuing our lesson on the Boggart. Now, as a brief reminder. A Boggart is a shapeshifter that usually lurks in dark spaces. It has no definite form, taking the shape of that which is most feared by the person who encounters it. When not in the sight of a person, it is believed to look like a dark blob. To repel or destroy a boggart, it must be laughed at. The spell Riddikulus can be cast to force the boggart to assume a generally amusing shape of what the caster mentally conceives. This is what we will be trying out today."

Penelope let out a small gasp along with some of the other students. Simon looked around and saw that everyone's faces had drained of colour. The only person who seemed unafraid was none other than Tyrannus Basilton Grimm-Pitch.

He hid all of his emotions behind a mask of arrogance and pale skin. He folded his arms and straightened up, as if accepting a challenge. No one could tell that he was scared, only he knew that he was scared out of his mind.

"Okay, everyone get in a line. Nice and orderly, please. Thank you." Everyone stood and nervously walked over to the cabinet. (Except for Baz, he strutted over and put himself about halfway through the line and directly behind Simon and in front of Penelope.) (Which made Simon paranoid on top of his nervousness.)

Down the line, the students went, there were giant spiders, clowns, and many dying family members among the Boggart. Overall, the students handled everything extremely well.

Then it got to Simon. Penelope straightened up and held her wand tightly in her hand, ready to help should the need arise.

"I got this. I can do this. No problem. Just have to say, 'Riddikulus' and it'll be done. It'll be simple." Simon thought. (But he didn't really believe it.)

Simon let out an uneven breath and stepped forward anxiously. Penelope watched nervously from the sidelines. Though Baz would never show it, he too was tense and ready to help if necessary.

The large dark ball swirled in front of Simon. It turned different colors and gained shape until it became...himself. A younger version of himself from when he'd just came to Watford. It was the Humdrum. Simon gasped and stumbled back a bit in surprise. He ran into Baz who steadied him and gave him a shove forward again, silently urging him to say the spell. Simon glanced behind him at Penelope one last time.

Then he aimed his wand and shouted, "Riddikulus!"

He fell back a bit, with the pure power of the spell, as many people before him had. Baz held his arms out and Simon fell into his grasp, breathing heavily. The class giggled as the Humdrum received bright pink hair. Penelope ran over and pulled Simon away, congratulating him on his performance.

Then it was Baz's turn. He stepped forward, wand at ready. The black blob took form and the class gasped. Baz's face dropped. Penelope squinted her eyes at him, trying to figure out what was going on. Simon tilted his head, equally as confused as the rest of his classmates.

Baz's Boggart was Simon Snow. Not the Humdrum. Just Simon.

The Boggart Simon started breathing heavily, he was fighting something, his sword was drawn and swiping through the air. Suddenly, Boggart Simon started bleeding. He dropped his sword and fell to his knees as his stomach was peirced by Baz's dagger. Baz let out a weak cry and winced. Penelope raised an eyebrow, deep in thought.

"No...no...no...no...no..." Baz whispered.

Boggart Simon started coughing up blood. Lots of it. Baz started whimpering.

"R-Ri-" He couldn't finish, he burst out sobbing and fell to his knees.

Penelope stepped forward and shouted, "Ridikulus!" As loud as she could. She didn't wait to see how the Boggart turned out, she ran over to Baz and pulled him to his feet. The professor stood shocked as Penelope gently led Baz out of the classroom. Simon followed them, still confused.

Penelope brought Baz to an empty corridor where he fell to his knees once again. His face contorted in pain as he let out another gut-wrenching sob.

"Baz, what happened back there?" Simon asked angrily.

Penelope glared at Simon and her voice dropped deadly low, "Drop it. Now is not the time."

"Now is the perfect time, Penelope!" Simon shouted.

"Right. I mean Baz's greatest fear was him killing you, but yeah, go right ahead and interrogate him, making him feel worse!" Penelope argued sarcastically.

Simon took a deep breath, "I want answers, Baz."

Baz let out a shuttering breath in between sobs.

"Shove off. I'm sorry, okay?" Baz cried.

Simon raised his eyebrows in surprise. He had never heard Baz apologize. But then again, he had never seen Baz cry, either.

After of few minutes of awkward silence, Baz finally calmed down and stood up and collected himself as best he could.

"Thank you for everything, Bunce. I think I'll go to my room now. I don't feel like participating in any more classes today."

Penelope nodded, expecting this, and walked back into the classroom. Simon stood for a minute, watching Baz walk down the hallway before following Penelope back into the classroom. Penelope decided she didn't want to face her own Boggart.

As soon as he walked in, the class started 'ooh'ing and making kissing faces. Simon blushed while Penelope glared at them, instantly shutting them up, and making them turn away.

The rest of the day passed in a blur. Baz didn't show up to lunch, dinner, or any of his classes. Considering the amount of attention that Simon was receiving, no one could blame him.

By the end of the day, Simon was exhausted. His day had been miserable because of Baz. Simon was still confused about the whole incident. He'd tried asking Penelope about it but she always shut down the conversation saying, "It's Baz's business, not mine. You should let it go."

Penelope walked Simon to his shared room at the end of the day to bring Baz something to eat. Simon didn't understand why Penelope was acting like this. (A/N because Penelope is a kind-hearted human being who would've done the same for anyone even her annoying pixie roommate.)

Penelope knocked gently on the door and held an arm out to hold back Simon who looked like he was about to break the door down.

"Tyrannus? It's Penelope and Simon. We brought food for you."

Simon gave Penny a pointed look that clearly said 'I had nothing to do with this'. Penelope rolled her eyes.

Baz shuffled around inside before there was a soft click as the door opened slowly. Simon pouted and pushed his way in front of Penelope to be face-to-face with the dark haired boy.

"I want answers. Now." Simon growled.

Baz scrunched up his face, "I don't think that you do, actually.

Simon glared at him. Baz avoided his gaze.

"Answer me." Simon demanded.

"Well, I mean it's pretty self-explanatory. The thing I fear most is killing you. That only leaves so many explanations." Baz sighed.

Penelope gave Simon a push into his room and handed Baz a tray of food that she had stolen from the dining hall. He gave her an almost smile and mumbled his thanks. Simon was still not satisfied. Penelope left the room silently and Baz brought his meal over to his small desk to eat. The poor boy hadn't even picked up his fork before Simon started yelling at him again.

"It leaves too many explanations!" Simon shouted.

Baz rolled his eyes, regaining his usual demeanor, "Such as...?"

Simon seemed to deflate a little.

"Um, well. It could-no..."

Baz smirked and he started munching happily on his food.

"That's what I thought."

Simon glared at him, "Just explain to me! I'm confused."

"Aren't we all?"

Simon groaned and Baz's eyes flicked up , accidentally meeting his gaze. This was a problem for Baz, as he often got lost in Simon's eyes. It was incredibly difficult for him to focus, but he couldn't look away. When he looked into Simon's eyes, it was almost like everything would be okay.

"Tyrannus Basilton Grimm-Pitch, if you don't tell me, I'll have to spell you."

Baz kept a straight face, though the thought scared him.

"Yeah. I'm sure you would, Snow." Baz said sarcastically.

"I will!" Simon argued.

Baz rolled his eyes again and focused his attention back towards his food as Simon drew his wand.

"To lie is the worst of things!" Simon shouted.

Baz winced as the spell hit his chest.

"I bloody love you, Snow." Baz growled.

Simon's jaw dropped and his face went slack, "What?"

Baz pushed out of his chair at the table, hiding is face from view. He refused to let Simon see the tears welling up in his eyes. Baz strode to the door as if he had a destination in mind-but he didn't. He didn't have a place to go, he just wanted to be anywhere but here. Baz threw the door open but before he took a step outside, Simon grabbed his arm.

"No. Baz, wait. I didn't...I don't..."

"Spit it out, Snow."

"I'm sorry. Please don't leave..."

Baz finally turned around and faced him.

"Why not? Don't you think I've been humiliated enough? I bloody love you, Simon. I shouldn't, but I do. A Grimm-Pitch shouldn't have fallen in love with you, but I did. Are you happy now?"

Baz had tears streaming down his face now but he didn't seem to notice. He tried to yank his arm out of Simon's grasp, but Simon held tight.

"Baz. Look at me. It's okay to fall in love."

Simon pulled Baz close to him and started rubbing circles on his stomach. Baz melted into him, letting his head fall on Simon's shoulder. Simon gently pressed his lips to his forehead.

"It's okay."

Maybe Baz was tired. Emotionally drained. Stressed. Whatever the reason, Baz believed him.

After a minute, Simon pulled away. Baz couldn't look Simon in the eye, still not used to this whole 'being courteous to your crush' thing.

"Thank you." Baz whispered softly, a ghost of a smile crept its way onto his face.

Simon grinned, "Tyrunnus Basildon Grimm-Pitch, will you go out with me?"

Baz's eyes widened, "Are you sure you want that I mean I'm a vampire and I-?"

Simon cut him off with a small kiss on the cheek.

"I'm positive."

Baz blushed, "I thought you'd never ask."

And then they kissed and it was really cute.
