18: Frozen Memories

Peter's Pov

The following afternoon sun shone beautifully under the clear sky. After I dressed up in my casual wear, I headed out to Fro-Yo Seasons.

"Where on earth are you going now, Mister?"

Busted.

"Hi Mom, I am meeting a friend today."

"Mike?"

"No."

"Liv?"

"No."

"Someone that I don't know?" She frowned.

"Actually, you do know her. It's Elsa."

"Peter's got a girlfriend! Peter's got a girlfriend!" Paisley ran up behind Mom, teasing me.

"Paise!" I snapped. I was expecting Mom to stop Paisley as well. But instead...

She hesitated, then replied," Oh, have fun then!"

What? Has she lost her senses? Usually she wouldn't let me met up with any girls, unless it was Liv. Oh well then, easier this way.

As I arrived at Fro-Yo Seasons, I saw Elsa was already seated in the store. Huh, she is way earlier than me and it's only 2.22pm now. If anything, I was already as early as I can be.

"You're late" was the first thing she stated when she saw me.

"Good afternoon to you too, Songbird." I replied. "And no: I'm early. You just happened to arrive earlier than me."

She rolled her eyes and made a playful smile. "So, what are you getting?"

I looked at her as she ate her Fro-Yo. "You ordered without waiting for me?"

"Hey, I couldn't wait. It's too hot out there. I can't get use to LA heat waves." She complained.

"Whatever."

I came back with a big cup of Fro-Yo deluxe, with extra topping and extra whip cream.

"When did you arrive exactly?" I asked suspiciously.

"Uh... fifteen minutes ago," she grinned sheepishly.

"Why? Is fro-yo really your favourite?" I asked.

"It's not about the food, silly. It's the place. It reminded me of..." She paused, and then continued, "of my childhood memories with my mom."

"Oh... I'm sorry... I didn't mean to pry." Snowflake avoided eye contact with me, but instead fixed her eyes on her cup and stopped fiddling with the food. This indicated that she was occupied.

She shook her head. "It's... fine. Mom and I... We used to go to our favourite fro-yo store two blocks down the road near our apartment most of the summertime. During winter, we would always go ice skating at the frozen lake in the park. Those... are my only good memories from Mexico. Now that my mother has her shop to run—"

"She doesn't have the time to..." I carefully picked what I was going to say. I knew I can really make anything into humor, and of course was not what I needed now. I didn't want to hurt her feelings, not today.

"Crazy, isn't it? How an ordinary place could hold such power of memories." There was an awkward pause between that, but then, "But hey, we aren't here to talk about me. Tell me about yourself." She changed the subject.

"Well... Let me see—" Thinking of what to say, I replied, "My family were originally from Austin, Texas, with my grandparents. Just about five years ago, my sisters and I moved back to my parents house here in L.A. So... I'm kinda like you in a way."

"Oh my God! So you're actually a cowboy?" Elsa exclaimed.

"Kinda," I rubbed my neck as she studied my face. "Is there something bothering you, Huckleberry?"

"Um..." I stalled out.

"It's okay if you don't want to talk to me about it."

"No! I... I want to tell you. It's just weird to me. I thought it's best to tell you because you might be the only one that understands... you know? Can you keep it a secret?"

"Yeah, of course."

"Well... I have precognition."

She stared at me, unable to find the words to piece out what she want to say.

Elsa's POV

"Pre..cognition?"

"Yeah. I have the ability to see events of the future," he stated without missing a beat. It was as if he had rehearsed that line too many times it came out naturally.

There it is, his retarded face, now became serious. He ran his hands through his hair in his typical show of frustration. I knew he did it without thinking, and usually when he was uncomfortable, but I secretly liked it. It tousled his caramel-blonde waves in a way that some guys spent hours at a mirror trying to do intentionally. Even so, I reached up and pulled his hands down. I might have liked it, but I knew he didn't.

"How did you know you have that ability?"

"I was a perfectly normal kid, until something happened in third grade somehow. When I see things, I would have a vision of that something from the future. But I have no idea when the vision took place. It could be tomorrow, or next month, or even a year later."

"What kinds of visions do you see?" I continued asking. I figured he probably needed someone to talk to about his 'strangeness'. That would only be me, because of our common experiences.

"All sorts of visions. Visions of success; visions of failure; visions of difficult experiences; even visions of... of death." He almost choked on the last word.

"So what 'visions' do you have when you see me?"

"It doesn't always work, Songbird."

"Does Liv and Mike know?" I gave a frown.

"Yes they do, but they don't understand this... abnormality. But you—you do. You and I both have something that differs from a normal person. Just please don't tell anyone." He whispered.

"Alright. This will be our little secret. Cowboy."
