7. Heart and Soul - Part One

This one's for you two, Birdsongfuzz and Abeeha_32, my precious witches.

PART ONE

"Mhmm," Mibby groaned in pleasure as she slurped the last remaining eyeballs from her bowl of soup. "This is the best eyeball soup I've ever had!"

She turned the bowl upside down in the air and licked it clean with her slimy black tongue, without any regard for social etiquette. But that was perfectly normal for witches, and her friends—Lana and Nayla—didn't bat an eyelid at Mibby, as they too were displaying the same uncivilised behaviour.

"You say that every time, Mibs!" Nayla laughed in between sucking up the remaining eyeball fluid in her own bowl. "But I agree, nothing can beat Lana's eyeball soup."

Lana grinned, showing off her crooked, yellow teeth, delighted that her friends enjoyed her expert culinary skills.

"It was made using fresh frog and toad eyeballs from Lizard Lake," she explained with a smirk, licking her lips to savour the last of the liquid, as she peered at her empty bowl sadly. "Too bad it's all finished now."

"Toad eyeballs? Really?" Nayla asked with an eyebrow raised, letting out a long, loud burp. "The toads are pretty rare in Lizard Lake. How did you manage to get hold of some?"

"I have a special trick," Lana replied with a wink as she began collecting up the three empty bowls. "I lure the toads in using aphids that I apply a strong scent to. Those little suckers can't resist the smell."

Lana smiled proudly and chucked the empty bowls carelessly into the sink, trusting the magic wouldn't let them break. Indeed, they didn't. But those bowls would remain in the sink until the next mealtime where Lana would simply pick them up and reuse them, witches never having the need to wash or clean.

"And what smell is that?" Mibby questioned.

"The smell of... blood," Lana whispered dramatically, before erupting into a series of wild cackles. "More specifically, it has to be blood from the left chamber of the heart. It took me weeks to figure out what those dumb toads liked. I tried all sorts, from earwax to pus to even stupid stuff like ketchup. In the end, it was just blood!"

"Genius!" Nayla laughed. "I'll have to use that trick sometime. And heart blood is so easy to get too! We can just go to Blood and Breakfast. They sell all sorts of blood there from a bunch of different species and almost any body part imaginable."

"Or we can just kill a human and extract the blood from their heart," Mibby suggested with a sly grin. "Human blood has the strongest, most delicious smell. It's bound to attract hundreds of toads super fast."

"Oh, how I wish I could kill a human and take their heart," Lana squealed, nodding her head excitedly. "It would be a dream come true! But if I had a human heart, I wouldn't use the blood to lure in toads. Hell no! There are so many better things we could do with a human heart."

"Human heart blood-ade is a delicacy in Wizardside." Nayla almost drooled in excitement. "It's ninety percent pure and costs almost three thousand rabbit teeth to purchase just one glass of it. It must be delicious!"

"Not to mention the amount of necromancy spells that can be enhanced with just a single drop of human blood," Mibby added as a desperate longing coursed through her veins. "And especially the blood from the heart. It's so damn powerful. We could destroy entire civilisations and bring people back from the dead in the blink of an eye."

Human heart blood was only accessible to the High Witches of the Witchville government, since the potential consequences of having it in the hands of ordinary witches were disastrous. The power one could gain with it was insane. Unimaginably deadly.

The three of them exchanged a glance full of hope, desire and raging hunger. Their eyes radiated a flame of yearning, a flame that once lit up, could not be extinguished so easily.

"It's unfortunate that there are no humans in Witchville," Lana sighed in defeat. "And apparently, the human blood sold at Blood and Breakfast is cheap and diluted, nothing like the likes of Wizardside."

"Yeah, the human blood here is weak," Nayla agreed sadly. "And they don't even have human heart blood. Just arteries which is so boring!"

"Why don't we find a real human?" Mibby whispered with a glint of hope in her desperate, excited voice. "Sneak out tonight. Go to the nearest human town. Kill one and—"

"Mibs, babe." Nayla raised her hand and interrupted her. "We're not allowed out of Witchville. And we are most definitely not allowed to let humans see us, let aside kill them."

"Nay, why are you so uptight?" Lana rolled her eyes, mirroring Mibby's smirk. "I'm with Mib. Who said rules were meant to be followed? It's just one night. And they'll never catch us if we're careful."

"Ugh, I'm so tempted." Nayla bit her lip, considering. But her mischievous friends and their antics were too contagious for her. Unable to resist, she erupted into an identical grin. "Oh fine, damn the consequences. I'm in."
