"I'm... a... good... girl..."
Sitting alone at the table on her first day at school was a fifteen year old girl called Cecelia. She fiddled with a lock of her wavy brown hair, doing nothing. She was silent. Not eating, not playing on her phone, nothing. Suddenly she was approached by two girls. The first had blonde straight hair with a silver star clip pinned in and light baby blue eyes. The second had black wavy hair and brown eyes hidden behind a pair of hipster glasses.
"Would you mind if we sat with you?" The blonde girl asked, catching the attention of Cecelia. The brunette shook her head and moved her bag on to the chair beside her. "Thank you. Oh, we should introduce ourselves. I'm Bella, and this is my friend Lana." The blonde girl introduced herself and her friend.
"I'm Cecelia. It's nice to meet you both." Cecelia smiled at them both. Bella nodded, having a sip of water from the bottle in her bag as Lana texted someone on her phone.
"It's nice to meet you too. What brings you here halfway through the year anyway?" Bella asked, starting up a conversation with the new girl. She was curious about her and where she came from.
"I had to move because of my mum's job." Cecelia explained to her. Bella nodded understandingly. She'd moved to this town when she was younger for the same reason, and could relate to Cecelia's situation. She had nobody before Lana. The conversation continued for a while before the bell for class went. Cecelia had different classes to Lana and Bella, so they had to split apart for the time being.
"See you tomorrow!" Bella told her brightly as she and Lana walked away from her. Cecelia smiled softly, her cheeks turning the slightest bit pink. She was really looking forward to spending more time with Bella now.
That night, Cecelia sat up in her bedroom with all the lights off on her laptop. A notepad and pen was placed beside her for taking notes. She wasn't doing any homework, she was on Bella's social media accounts trying to figure her out. She'd only known her for a short while, but was already desperate to be part of her world. It seemed like so much fun.
"Dinner's ready." Her mum announced, entering the bedroom. Cecelia didn't even look up from her laptop. She was acting like she was completely invested in homework.
"I'm busy with homework. Can you set it aside so I can heat it up when I'm done?" She asked. Her mother nodded and left her in peace. A smirk formed on Cecelia's face the moment the door closed. Now she could be alone with her 'studying'.
The next lunch time Cecelia went straight to the same cafeteria, sitting at the same table waiting for Bella to arrive. She kept waiting and waiting, until she arrived.
"I've been looking everywhere for you. Come on, we're heading up to the rooftop." Bella told her, grabbing her hand and pulling her up. Cecelia was surprised that the rooftop was even accessible to students, but she was about to be proven wrong.
The rooftop was quite a pleasant place to be. There were benches with soft pillows and potted plants all around. The view of the town was pretty decent too. Sat waiting already was Lana, who was on her phone.
"I would've called you, but I don't have your number and couldn't find any of your social media accounts." Bella explained, sitting down beside Lana. Cecelia nodded, sitting on the other side of Bella.
"I don't have social media." She explained. She had her reasons, but she wasn't comfortable sharing them with anyone. Certainly not Bella.
"Well, that's gonna have to change if you're having out with us." Lana told her playfully, putting her phone in her bag so she could have a proper conversation. Cecelia nodded, deciding she would make an Instagram account that evening.
"Speaking of, do you wanna come over tonight?" Bella asked. "It's girl's night, and me and Lana always hang out together. You're welcome to join if you want." She told her. Cecelia was shocked that she'd been welcomed into the group with such open arms. Not like she was complaining, however. She nodded, smiling brightly.
"I'd like that a lot."
That evening, Cecelia found herself in Bella's bedroom with her and Lana. Empty pizza boxes surrounded the girls.
"This is getting boring, I'm inviting the guys over." Lana said, grabbing her phone which was placed beside one of the pizza boxes. Cecelia sighed quietly, looking down.
"You don't like that idea, Cece?" Bella asked curiously. The brunette shrugged, deciding to just be honest with Bella.
"I thought it was a girl's night. I kinda like it just being us." She admitted, fiddling with a lock of brown hair. Bella nodded slowly as Lana put her phone back down.
"I suppose you're right. We can invite the boys over tomorrow or something." She said casually. Bella got up and grabbed a large bottle from the back of the wardrobe.
"We can still have fun though." She smirked and set the bottle down in the middle of them. It was obvious to Cecelia that the contents of the bottle was alcohol. "Don't tell me you've never had alcohol before." Bella asked Cecelia, noticing the look on her face. She shook her head softly.
"I haven't, no." She told her. Cecelia shrugged and grabbed a few cups that were also hidden in the back of her wardrobe.
"First time for everything, right?" She said, pouring a cup for all three of them. Cecelia took the cup and smiled awkwardly, drinking along with the other two. For the first time, Cecelia felt truly accepted and part of the group. It was euphoric for her, and she never wanted this to go away.
"Excuse me. You haven't seen my daughter, have you?" It was early the next morning, and Cecelia's mother was concerned. She hadn't come home, and hadn't told her where she was. The neighbour shook his head, glancing down at his teenage daughter who was in the same year and school as Cecelia. "She told me she went to an art show at school, and hasn't come home." She explained to the neighbour.
"There wasn't an art show at school last night though." The teenager said curiously, tilting her head. Cecelia's mother sighed, pretty annoyed she'd been lied to. This wasn't the first time, either.
"Alright. Sorry to waste your time." She told them, heading back to her house. As she neared the front door, she saw Cecelia walking in her direction. She was furious.
"Where was you last night?" She asked angrily.
"I went to a friend's after the art show. My phone died before I could call you." Cecelia lied, but her mother could see right through them. She wasn't going to fall for it again.
"Really? Because I found out there was no art show last night. And," she stopped, noticing a foul smell coming from Cecelia. "Is that alcohol I smell?" Cecelia shook her head, but it was so obvious. "That's it. You are grounded young lady. Inside, now." She demanded. Cecelia sighed and complied with her request. It wasn't like she really had much of a choice. Her mother sighed once she was inside, taking a moment for herself and mumbling something before following her in. "This is just like last time..."
That evening, Cecelia snuck out to go to Lana's house. They had planned to hang out together here last night, and she really didn't wanna miss it just because she was grounded. She wasn't letting them know she was grounded, either. Cecelia found herself sat at a table with Bella and one of the guys, Harrison. Suddenly another boy walked over. This boy was Bella's boyfriend, Alex.
"I'd better man the grill if Alex is over here." Harrison laughed, excusing himself. They had set up a barbecue grill for food which Alex had been cooking on before coming over to them. Bella watched Harrison go as Alex sat down in between the two girls.
"So, what did you think of him?" Bella asked Cecelia, holding on to Alex's hand. She shrugged and glanced over at him.
"He was alright, but I don't think I'm looking for a relationship right now." She explained to Bella. By the pout on her face, Cecelia knew Bella wasn't too happy with that answer. This wouldn't ruin their friendship, though. "Hopefully someday I'll find someone and we'll be as cute as you two."
"Hear that babe? She said we're cute!" Bella said to Alex excitedly. He laughed, kissing his girlfriend on the cheek. She blushed, for a moment forgetting Cecelia was with them. The brunette excused herself, deciding to go home. She was grounded, and didn't want to risk being caught outside.
The next day Cecelia got a call. It was Bella. She answered almost immediately, smiling. She was always happy to hear from Bella.
"Hi Cece. I'm so bored and nobody's around to hang out." Bella told her, whining. Cecelia was silent, listening as Bella continued. "Please meet up with me so we an go do anything. Shopping, lunch, I really don't care." She continued whining. Cecelia felt bad.
"I really want to, but I'm grounded. I can't go anywhere." She explained, sighing. She sat down on her freshly made bed, still listening to Bella.
"Fine. I'm coming over. See you soon." Bella hung up before Cecelia could say anything. She sighed and looked around her bedroom. At least it was tidy. She noticed her straighteners places by her full length mirror, thinking. She rarely straightened her hair, but today she decided to.
Bella knocked on Cecelia's front door, waiting for her to show up. Both Cecelia's parents were at work, so as long as she was gone before they came home they'd never know she was there. Cecelia opened the door, catching Bella off guard. Cecelia had styled her hair the exact same way Bella styled hers. She'd even clipped in some extensions.
"Your hair... it's different..." Bella said awkwardly to her. Cecelia nodded, smiling and fiddling with some of it.
"I really liked yours and wanted mine to be just like yours." Cecelia explained, smiling brightly. Bella nodded, taking a small step back. This all felt weird for her, and she didn't like it. She had to get out.
"Right... Umm... I've just remembered I promised to study with Lana... I should go..." Bella stammered, leaving as soon as possible. Cecelia watched her leave, frowning. She just couldn't understand where this awkwardness was coming from.
"-It was just so weird!" Bella finished explaining to Lana why had happened the day before at Cecelia's house. Lana sighed, holding her friend's hand.
"I'm sure it's nothing. It's not like you're the only girl who straightens her hair and wears extensions." Lana tried to reassure her. Bella nodded, wanting to believe her. It was Cecelia's words that really put her on edge.
"I've been looking everywhere for you!" Cecelia called to them, walking over to where they were sat. Both turned to look, equally as shocked. Cecelia's brown hair was dyed a near identical colour to Bella's, her purplish eyes covered with blue contacts. She was wearing clothes that could've come straight from Bella's wardrobe, and her makeup was almost the same as how Bella did hers.
"Nevermind..." Lana retracted her previous statement to Bella. This was definitely weird and creepy. "We have a tutor session with mr. Andersen now. Come on, Bella." Lana excused them, grabbing her friend's hand and pulling her away. Bella went with her, still in pure shock over Cecelia's transformation.
"I'm almost as bad as she is..." Bella said to herself. She was in her bedroom on her laptop after school, and Alex was with her. She'd managed to find some of Cecelia's old social media accounts and was looking through them. "She's done it to someone else. This girl named Lacey." Bella showed him hat she'd found on her laptop. Alex sighed. "I'm meeting up with her tonight to talk to her about this. Can you come with me?" She asked, giving him a cliche 'puppy dog eyes' look. Alex shook his head.
"I would, but I have to tutor someone tonight. They're paying me triple, and I can't refuse it." He explained to her. Bella pouted slightly and sat back, continuing to explore social media.
That night Bella found herself at a nearby café. She headed inside, looking around. Eventually she saw a girl she presumed to be Lacey. She looked almost identical to how Cecelia had looked the day they met. The only difference was facial features and body proportions.
"Wow. You look so much like Cecelia." Bella said, sitting down opposite her with her latte. Lacey laughed awkwardly, rubbing the back of her neck.
"More like Cecelia looked like me." Lacey said. Bella nodded slowly, looking down into her drink. An awkward silence fell between the pair as neither of them knew how to say what they wanted to ask the other. Eventually, Bella spoke.
"She's done this to you too?" She asked. Lacey nodded her head and drank a little of her chai tea before answering Bella's question.
"Yeah, although we're not the only ones she's done this too. I know at least three others." Lacey told her. Bella was a little surprised nobody had stopped her. "Did she pull the innocent girl act on you?"
"Like she was a loner who'd never drunk or hung out with others her age before? Yeah, pretty much." Bella nodded. She remembered back to when she'd first met Cecelia. She had been all alone in the cafeteria not doing anything, and had been acting a little awkward when she got the alcohol out. The same thing had happened with Lacey.
"Cecelia is crazy. She started dressing and acting the same as me. She tried to steal my friends, my boyfriend, and even my whole life. Thankfully they came to their senses and drove her out of town." Lacey explained her experience with Cecelia to Bella. She wanted to stop Lacey ruining other people's lives the way she tried to ruin hers.
"Thank you for agreeing to studying with me so last minute." Cecelia smiled softly, leading Alex into her dining room. She'd been the one to ask Alex to tutor her a promise of triple his usual fee. He'd already convinced her Mum to let him in so he could tutor her, since she wasn't supposed to have friends over.
"It's fine. I'm just a little surprised it was you, since the email was from someone called Belle." Alex said awkwardly, setting his books down on the table. Cecelia nodded awkwardly.
"I don't use my real name for emails, just incase I had it wrong." Cecelia explained. Alex nodded, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Let's just get studying..." Alex suggested. He was focusing on her demeanour to see why she had Bella so shaken despite her appearance. He noticed she was acting slightly flirty towards him, trying too hard to imitate Bella.
"Oh, how rude of me. Can I get you something to drink?" She asked suddenly. He nodded, wanting to get her out of the room for a little while so he could call Bella. As soon as she was out the room he called her, and she picked up.
"Okay. First of all, you were right and I was wrong." He started.
"What do you mean?" Bella asked curious. She didn't know he had gone to Cecelia's house to tutor her, thinking he had gone to help some girl called Belle. Then again, she should've seen it coming after the conversation with Lacey.
"Cecelia." That told Bella all she needed to know, and she was not happy. She didn't want to be pushed out of her life by some random girl who she'd been kind to.
"Where are you?" She asked, heading in the direction of Cecelia's house. By the time Alex had called her, Cecelia had left Lacey at the restaurant to do her thing and was walking home. She was fairly close to Cecelia's house anyway.
"I'm at Cecelia's house." Alex told her. "I'll try and finish this session as soon as I can and come meet you." Alex told her, hanging up. That wasn't going to stop Bella. Cecelia came back in to the room, acting like she hadn't been listening to his phone call. Alex looked up at her, standing up. "I'm sorry, Cecelia. Something's come up and I need to go." Alex explained, packing up his books.
"Oh... But we still have half an hour left..." Cecelia frowned, fiddling with her dyed blonde hair. Alex knew, but didn't care. He just wanted to leave.
"I know, and I'm sorry. Keep your money, Cecelia." He said to her. Her shoulders drooped as she set the drinks down on the table.
"Let me at least give you something for your time." She said, going to get her purse from her bedroom. Alex finished packing up as she searched for her purse.
"Where is she?" Alex looked up, seeing Bella in the doorway. The door had been left open by a crack, and she had come in search of Cecelia. Seconds later, Cecelia came back in.
"Bella, what are you doing here?" Cecelia asked innocently, tilting her head. She didn't know why Bella was here, but she was kinda happy to see her. Bella was the opposite.
"Don't come near me or my friends ever again." Bella threatened, pointing directly at Cecelia. She wanted nothing to do with her anymore. Cecelia's mother sighed, watching everything from the doorway. This was exactly like what happened with Lacey and the other. "You're an awful person, Cecelia. Stop trying to steal my life and get your own." Cecelia shook her head, sinking to her knees
"I'm not an awful person... I'm a good girl..." she said to herself, her body twitching. Alex put his arm around Bella, watching Cecelia. They were silent as they watched her finally lose her mind. "I'm a good girl. I'm a good girl. I'm a good girl." She continued, tears leaking out of her eyes.
After that, she was admitted into a mental institute to deal with her issues so she wouldn't do this again. The others continued about their lives as normal, knowing they were safe from Cecelia. She was still going with the story she believed wholeheartedly that Bella had made her into a mini-me, even though everyone around her knew that was a lie.
"I'm... a... good... girl..."
