Chapter 32- Back In Time
All of the sudden the darkness around us disappeared and was replaced by the sweetness of day. I look around at my surroundings we were in the infirmary yes. But it was way earlier. "What just happened?" I ask Hermione.
"Where's Ron?" Harry asks.
"7:30. Where were we at 7:30?" Hermione asks.
"I don't know. Going to Hagrid's?" Harry responds.
"Come on. And we can't be seen," Hermione says as she turns and runs. I follow her closely as Harry sticks behind us.
"Hermione!" Harry yells, "Hermione!"
"Seriously Hermione what happened?!" I ask. She leads us through the path we went through.
"Hermione, wait," Harry says, "will you please tell me what it is we're doing?" We peer over the rocks to see us from earlier.
"Bloody hell?" I ask watching myself.
"You foul, loathsome, evil little cockroach!" Past Hermione yells.
"That's us," Harry says as Hermione pushes us back.
"Hermione, no! He's not worth it," Past Ron yells.
"Hermione Granger if you don't tell me what the hell just happened I'm going to curse you!" I scream. She covers my mouth with her hand and pulls out her necklace from earlier.
"I'm explaining it okay," She says as she removes her hand. I nod. "This is a Time-Turner. McGonagall gave it to me first term. This is how I've been getting to my lessons all year."
"You mean we've gone back in time?" Harry asks.
"Yes," She says, "Dumbledore obviously wanted us to return to this moment. Clearly, something happened he wants us to change."
"Maybe we can....," I mumble as I watch Hermione hit Draco again.
"Good punch," Harry compliments.
"Thanks," She says, "Malfoy's coming." She pushes us back out of their sight.
"Run. Not a word to anyone, understood?" Draco hisses, "I'm gonna get that jumped-up mudblood! Mark my words." I watch as past me high fives past Hermione.
"That felt good," Past Hermione says,
"Not good, brilliant," Past Ron says. We sneak down and watch ourselves runaway.
"Look. Buckbeak's still alive," Harry says as we reach the rocks.
"Of course. Remember what Dumbledore said? If we succeed, more than one innocent life could be spared," Hermione says, "Let's go." We run down and dive behind the pumpkins.
"Here they come. I'd better hurry," Harry says jumping up. I pull him back.
"You can't," I tell him, "Fudge has to see Buckbeak. Otherwise, he'll think Hagrid set him free." We look back inside and see as Ron gets scabbers back. I look back at myself.
"Am I really that unattractive?" I mumble looking at myself, "damn."
"Are you kidding me?" Hermione asks looking at me. She rolls her eyes and looks back. "You're not and it's not the time."
"That's Pettigrew," Harry says as he starts to jumpS up again.
"Harry, you can't," Hermione says.
"He betrayed my parents. You don't expect me to sit here," Harry says.
"Yes, and you must! Harry, you're in Hagrid's hut now. If you go bursting in, you'll think you've gone mad. Awful things happen to wizards who meddle with time. We can't be seen,"Hermione says.
"Fudge is coming," I say.
"And we aren't leaving? Why aren't we leaving?" Hermione asks.
"Because we didn't leave until that jar broke," I tell her. She picks up the rock and nods. She chucks inside the house and glass shatters loudly. I hand her the other one and she throws it at Harry.
"Are you mad? That hurt," Harry whines.
"Stop being a baby," I huff, "We're coming out the back door. So lets go!" We run into the forest and duck behind trees.
"Is that really what my hair looks like from the back?" Hermione asks peering out.
"Hermione not now," I whisper. She goes back behind the tree. Past Hermione staring towards us.
"What?" Past Harry asks.
"I thought I just saw... Never mind," Past Hermione says.
"Let's go," Lets go past me yells. They clear out and I wave him forward.
"Okay, go, Harry. Go!" Hermione says.
"Now!" I say. He walks towards Buckbeak who weakly hides his face.
"Get away. Get off," He hisses.
"Okay, Buckbeak. Come quickly. Come with us now. Come on," Harry says trying to pull the Hippogriff.
"Keep trying. Come on. Quickly," Hermione whispers.
"Seriously guys," I say keeping watch, "we have seconds."
"Buckbeak. Okay?" Harry says. Hermione and I grab the hanging ferrets and slowly lead him away.
"Come on, Buckbeak. Come and get the nice dead ferret. Come on. It's here. Come on, Beaky," Hermione says. We get into the forest and watch as they walk out. We run deeper into the forest until we reach a hill overseeing the Whomping Willow.
"Look. It's Lupin," Hermione points out. I look down to see Remus and Mikey. Alive and well.
"Mikey!" I call out wanting to run down after him. Harry holds me back. "Let me see my brother please!"
"You can't," Hermione says, "he'll she you when he walks in. He'll know somethings up. And Snape's coming."
"So what?" I ask.
"Now we wait," Harry says.
"Now we wait," Hermione repeats. I sit beside Harry and rest my head on my shoulder.
"That might be the last time I see my brother alive," I mumble.
"We can save him," Harry says, "or at least try."
"What even happened?" I ask him, "with Mikey?"
"Dementors," Harry says, "Mikey tried to save Sirius and I."
"Damn that boy and him trying to be a hero," I mock jokingly. Harry hugs me slightly in an attempt to comfort me to no avail. But at least he tried.
****
As time passes I sleepily watch Buckbeak as he catches bats. "At least someone's enjoying himself," Hermione says.
"Yeah," Harry mumbles. He looks over at me half asleep as I lean against the tree. I stiffen my body pretending to be asleep. I was too drained to talk. "Hermione?"
"Yeah?" She asks.
"Before, down by the lake, when I was with Sirius......I did see someone. That someone made the dementors go away," Harry says.
"With a Patronus. I heard Snape telling Dumbledore. According to him... ...only a really powerful wizard could have conjured it," Hermione states.
"It was my dad. My dad conjured the Patronus," Harry says.
"Harry, but your dad's..." She says letting the sentence die.
"Dead. I know. I'm just telling you what I saw," He says.
"Here we come," She says, She turns to me and shakes me and I quickly get up. Looking over at us.
"You see Sirius talking to me there?" Harry says, "He's asking me to come live with him."
"That's great," She says.
"When we free him, I'll never have to go back to the Dursleys'. It'll just be me and him. We could live in the country......someplace you can see the sky," Harry says, "I think he'll like that after all those years in Azkaban."
" Harry!" Past Hermione yells.
"Run!" Past Sirius yells.
"Let's go," We say running down a path. We could clearly see Mikey and Harry watching Remus. Hermione howls loudly causing Past Remus to look at us.
"What are you doing?" Harry says grabbing her.
"Saving your life," I point out. She does it again.
"Thanks," He says, "Great. Now he's coming for us."
"Yeah, I didn't think about that. Run!" Hermione says. As we run after her I groan angrily.
"Next time can we think shit through before we do it!" I scream.
"Noted," She says stilling running. She grabs my hand and Harry's and pulls us behind a tree. We all pant loudly as we sneak around. I sigh in relief until we turn to see Remus behind us.
"Oh come on," I groan. Well its been a nice life. Um goodbye. I'm gonna die. We back away slowly until Buckbeak runs towards Remus scaring him off. "Oh Merlin," I say clutching my chest, "I really love that bird. 50 points for Buckbeak. House Cup to Buckbeak."
"That was so scary," Hermione says hiding her face.
"Poor Professor Lupin's having a really tough night," Harry says. A harsh cold breeze waves over and I look at the two.
"If you're moment is over we still have to save Sirius," I tell them, "so come on!" Harry leads us to the lake he was talking about. On the other side we see Harry, Mikey, and Sirius. Mikey on his last straw. Warn out, bloody and weak looking.
"This is horrible," Hermione says.
"Don't worry. My dad will come. He'll conjure the Patronus," Harry says. Nothing happens and I start to lunge forward.
"Wait," She says.
"But Mikey-"
"Any minute now," Harry says.
"He better soon," I groan, "Mikey is gonna die!"
"He's coming okay!" Harry says still nothing. I start to pull away from Hermione. I wanted to save my brother. He's all I had left.
"Hermione let go!" I yell.
"Right there. You'll see," Harry was pointing at nothing. I see a demontor, Harry, Sirius on the ground. and Mikey stand between them. Dying to save Harry's life. His body goes limp and I scream.
"Noo!" I scream loudly. It was blood curdling.
"W-what?" Hermione says slightly teary as she holds me back.
"He's coming I promise," Harry says. I turn to the boy with tears forming in my eyes and I shove him back.
"Harry, listen to me. No one's coming," I say grabbing his shoulders.
"Don't worry, he will. He will come," He insists, "Mikey is fine everything is alright."
"No Harry! No one is coming you're dying, Sirius is dying. And I'll be damned if Mikey died for no god damn reason!" I scream at him. He looks up at me then to the figures then pulls his wand out. Running to the edge of the lake.
"Harry!" Hermione screams.
"Expecto Patronum!" Harry yells. A bright bluish white light goes from his wand forming a stag. It pushes the dementors away from past him and Sirius.
********
"You were right, Hermione. It wasn't my dad I saw earlier. It was me!" Harry exclaims as we fly through the sky.
"Congrats," I hiss.
"I saw myself conjuring the Patronus before. I knew I could do it this time because......well, I had already done it. Does that make sense?" He asks.
"Yes well Kinda?" I reply.
"No. But I don't like flying...!" Hermione squeals as we soar through the sky. We reach the tower. Hermione jumps off and points her wand to the door.
"Bombarda!" She says. Causing the door to blow up. Harry pulls Sirius onto Buckbeak and starts to soar again. Sirius cheering as we fly through the sky. Harry lands the bird in the court yard calmly. Once we land Sirius pulls as away from the bird.
"I'll be forever grateful for this.....to all of you," He says. He looks at me and smiles sympathetically. "Your brother was a good kid."
"You better live one hell of a life if its price was his," I say as I turn away.
"I want to go with you," Harry says.
"One day, perhaps. For some time, my life will be too unpredictable. And besides......you're meant to be here," Sirius says to Harry.
"But you're innocent," Harry says.
"And you know it. And for now, that will do," Sirius says, "I expect you're tired of hearing this......but you look so like your father. Except your eyes. You have..."
"My mother's eyes," Harry says,
"It's cruel that I spent so much time with James and Lily, and you so little. But know this: The ones that love us never really leave us. And you can always find them......in here," Sirius says. "You really are the brightest witch of your age," He says to Hermione as he remounts Buckbeak. He sets off and we watch as he disappears into the night sky.
"We have to go," Hermione says pulling us away. We reach the infirmary and our met with Dumbledoor.
"Well?" Professor Dumbledore asks.
"He's free. We did it,"
"Did what?" Dumbledore asks, "Good night." We nod and walk inside. Being met with a very confused Ron.
"How did you get there?" Ron asks, "I was talking to you there. And now you're there."
"What's he talking about?" Hermione asks.
"I don't know. Honestly, Ron. How can somebody be in two places at once?" Harry says. They look at me expecting something funny or witty and I give them a death glare.
"My brothers dead," I scoff.
"I'm sorry," Harry says, "if I would of acted sooner or I could have- Mikey was a great man. And I'm sorry." I wipe my eyes before collapsing in his arms letting it all out. He runs his hand along his back as Hermione walks towards me pushing my hair from my face. Both being the support I needed.
*******
Silence. After everything today. It was quite welcoming. Nice sweet peace. I was in my spot as always in the common room. But since it was so late it was empty. Just my whimpering mess of a self. "Hey," Draco says softly as he sits across from me.
"Hi," I say my voice barely above a whisper.
"I heard about Mikey," He says.
"You must enjoy it," I scoff, "another non pureblood dead."
"No actually," He says, "not if its hurting you so much." He places his hand on my knee to attempt to get me to look at him. I comply and shift my eyes from the green of the lake and looking over at him.
"Why me?" I ask him, "why my family huh? Why do I get to be the orphan. Or the girl who's brother died. Its not fair! Everyone in my life leaves or dies! Its not fair!" Tears were rushing down my face.
"Hey hey," He says sitting up, "you don't get to chose these things. They just happen."
"But why to me?" I ask.
"Because life is cruel," He says, "so they take an amazing girl like you and try to break her." I look up at him and wipe the pools of tears under my eyes. I look down at the ground then back up at him and I bit my lip.
"Thanks Draco," I say.
"No problem Cultven," He says. He steps forwards and plants a kiss on my forehead.
