Chapter 141 - The First Birthday
One year since my life changed in one of the biggest ways. One year since Mikey was born. One year since my little baby boy came into my life. And while it was a wild year I wouldn't change a second of it.
Like most events in our lives, Draco had to make a big deal of it. He had gone all out of his way to throw a party for the toddler. But like most events in our life, it wasn't that simple. Draco and Harry's assignment was growing into less of a small deal and more into a full blow case and investigation. So his normal work week now had an extended 6 hours attached to it where he and Harry would sit upstairs in the office screaming about it. He felt guilty that he wasn't around the family enough. I could tell it was getting to him. So he's trying to make up for it the only way he knows how. To put all his energy into planning this party.
"If you can't get the colors right how are you going to call yourself a party planner- What do you mean this isn't that serious?! You only turn one once in your life and I'll be damned if my son doesn't celebrate it in the absolute best way because he deserves it!" Draco screams into the phone.
"Oh boy," Hermione says as we sit in the kitchen, "he's being really intense."
I sigh as I twirl my coffee cup lightly.
"Yeah I know," I say to her.
"He's been screaming all morning," Blaise groans as he bounces Barron. I move to pull Mikey onto my lap bouncing him lightly. The baby clearly not ready to be up today.
"Do you want to be fired?!" Draco yells over the phone. I sigh pulling the cup to my lips.
"He's just stressed and well he's a Malfoy they get stressed and they plan parties," I tell them, "I never understood it but I'm not bothering to argue with him over it. Listen we have to get to work. Sooner rather than later- Narcissa thanks again for taking them. We have to be there for this meeting early."
"Barron is going to cry the second I leave but all you need is a the niffler toy and some TV," Blaise tells her.
"TV I can't believe you let them watch TV," Narcissa says, "we never let Draco watch TV-"
"Mum you didn't know what TV was," Draco groans as he joins us at the table. He grabs a cup of coffee and takes a long drink before looking over to Hermione, "Hermione thanks for bringing over that report sorry you had to get here so early."
"No it's fine," Hermione says, "it's no big deal. Ron got an early start today so it didn't make anything. Plus I needed to ask Y/n about some reports." Draco nods then looks to me.
"Okay so are we ready to head over to the ministry?" Draco asks. I nod. I kiss Mikey and Barron's cheeks before stepping over to grab my purse. Then we move apparating together. After a quick second, we all reach the entrance to the ministry.
"I'll be home late tonight," Blaise tells us, "I have a meeting with the potioneers guild. Think you can survive without me?"
"Probably," Draco says, "- I think I'll be home on time for once but I mean why would I ever get to go home on time."
"I'm sorry love," I say pecking his cheek, "it's fine you guys I'll get home normally and well Narcissa is there and she's always excited to be there with the kids- Oh Blaise look at the time you're going to be late. Be careful today okay?"
"Yes Ma'am," he says. I give him a sweet smile and then he moves to apparate away. Finally, Draco and I move following Hermione inside the ministry. His grip on my hand tightens. I can tell he's stressed just from the slight clenching of his jaws. I don't have to wait long before getting him to talk about it.
"The party planner is a complete fool," Draco says clearly annoyed, "wanting to use lime green- who even likes the color lime green. Lime is an ugly color. I told her Hunter green. And she sent over Lime green banners- lime green!"
"Lime - how outrageous," I tell him, "how dare he do that."
"Exactly!" He exclaims, "honestly with everything going on right now I can't handle this-"
"Now remember we did hire these planners to try to take the stress off of you," I say softly, "please don't antagonize them too much."
"Party planners," He huffs, "my parents never used party planners. Assistant Wizards to help set it up sure but they never let someone else plan the party-"
"Your parents didn't work," I point out, "we both work full-time jobs and you've been working overtime- you don't have the time to work on this. So for once in your life babe, I'm going to need you to relax. If not for me. Then for Mikey." He smiles lightly.
"Right," He says, "I'm trying I know." I move rubbing my thumb along his knuckles.
"Mikey is going to have a great birthday- even if the banners are lime green," I tell him. He smiles. Then turns to say something. But before he can Harry steps towards us with Ron at his side.
"Draco meeting we have to go," Harry says, "come on."
"Damnit okay," Draco says. He pecks my forehead. "I'll see you at lunch?"
"Okay," I say, "I love you."
"I love you too," He says brightly. He heads off with them. I sigh loudly. It never ends with us. How come I saw my husband more in the middle of a bloody war than now? At this point, I'm convinced his department believes Draco can bend time with all of the work they give him.
"He going to be okay?" Hermione asks me, "I haven't seen him this stressed out since we were back in school."
"Yeah, I'd say it's like sixth year all over again," I tell her, "he's worrying me... He's taking on way too much and I don't want him to overwork himself. Is Ron having the same issue?"
"Ron? No, not at all," Hermione tells me, "he's doing perfectly fine. He's too focused on knocking down death eaters to care about anything else... I love him but he's too easy to please."
"Helps when you're in the bedroom," I say with a slight smirk.
"I tell you one thing!"
"Oh come on Mione it's funny!"
"It's not-"
"Morning Ladies."
We both stop to look over at the source of the voice. It's Thedore Nott.
"Theo?" I ask clearly confused, "what are you doing here?"
"I thought you were in Bulgaria?" Hermione asks.
"I was- ministry called me in to hand over some things my parents own," Theodore explains, "all the works ya know. Dark Items all through out the house. Apparently someone didn't like that I still had them. Even though they aren't functional. Draco being a pal talked them out of raiding my house and got them down to just letting me turn in some items... Prats either way." Hermione shifts tensely. Theo moves meeting my eyes. "I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be in trouble if the ministry started raiding houses again."
I tense slightly. What the hell is he even talking about?
"What's that supposed to mean?" Hermione asks firmly.
"Just what I said Mrs. Granger-Weasley," Theodore says, "not everyone would pass the raids... Even if they are ministry employees." What's he trying to say? Theo- while a friend of mine still has quite a bit of unresolved feelings with the whole war. He still believes in pure blood superiority and all that old world shit. I thought he was out of it more than he is- but clearly whatever he's going about just means that he isn't. "Anyways- Malfoy. I hear little Mikey's party is tommorow. Were you really planning on not inviting me?"
"You were invited dumbass," I say to him, "and you RSVPed."
"Did I really?" He asks, "hm seems to of slipped my mind. What's the boy into? Cars maybe?"
"He's obessed with Animals and qudditch- although I don't think he understands qudditich I just think he likes watching everyone fly around," I tell Theo, "whatever you get him make sure it's nothing too small- he's only a year and still a big fan of putting everything he see's in his mouth."
"Y/n we're going to be late," Hermione says. Clear distate for Theo in her face. I give a quick wave to Theodore before moving off with Hermione. Once far enough away she leans towards me. "What did he mean about the raids?"
"I wish I knew," I say honestly, "Theo is cripitc as best and threatening at worst... He's quite a character. She makes a face. Before she can question me more we reach her office. She gives me a quick wave before I make my escape to my own office.
I barely make it too lunch. I've never seen so many people in my office asking about everything and nothing all at once. When I get to Draco's office I'm half tempted to open the scotch his father gave him that sits on his bookshelves.
"You look- defeated," He tells me, "you okay love?"
"This job- not nearly as fun as qudditch," I tell him as I sit across from him, "you doing alright tho?"
"Well I'd be better if someone just let the raids go," He groans.
"I heard about that," I tell him, "Theo stopped me and Hermione on his way out. Told us how you got his house off the list to be raided if he handed over the items himself."
"Did he tell you that I had to practically beg him to comply to even that?" Draco asks.
"No but figuring that it's Theodore I figured he wouldn't have accepted something like that until it was last resort," I say as I use my wand to call over the scotch and glasses. I grab the bottle when it comes within reach. The glasses still hovering. I pour two drinks then send the bottle back. "Need a drink?"
"You read my mind," He says taking one of the glasses. I grab the other.
"He didn't seem pleased about these raids," I say, "I guess that means he's got something big in his house... You know what it is?"
"It's not exactly big as much as he as a lot of things," Draco points out, "all dark magic and all of it illegal. What he has takes up an entire roll of parchment- and what he handed over is about the size of a sticky note."
"Great," I say, "he really loves to make your job easy on you."
"Better than others," Draco says, "Goyle cut off contact with me because I asked him to take the same deal. Said he's 'not a coward and won't act as such'. Went on and on in his letter about how he can't excuse being my friend any more... All because I tried to help him." I move placing my hand on his. He moves taking my hand.
"I'm sorry Dray," I say softly.
"Don't worry about it," Draco says, "I don't want people in my life like that. Now more than ever. Mikey doesn't deserve to have to be raised around people who act like that. I won't excuse it anymore."
"Still it's not a great expiernce cutting people out of your life," I tell him, "espescially when it's someone you've been friends with as long as him."
"Don't worry about it," He tells me, "I'm much more concerned with the other aspects of these raids."
"Like if they raid us?" I ask him. He raises a brow. "Theo heavily suggested that I should be worried if they raid us."
"We would be fine," Draco says, "we have a few artifacts from your parents that might be a little more of a risk than others... Your dad's time turner for example. If we were raided they might confiscaite the small things. Maybe give us a slight slap on the wrist. Who knows they might even pardon us all together."
"Nothing else?"
"No nothing," Draco says, "you really think there is something in the house?"
"No just curious," I tell him, "I don't want to tell them one thing while doing the other... What about you parents?"
"Clear- well for the most part," He says, "dad turned over somethings that would cause a fuss and then moved the rest. Didn't mention where tho."
"Probably for the best if you don't know," I tell him. He hands my lunch box over to me. We both start to dig into them as he goes on about some new party thing.
"I called the magical petting zoo handlers- and they were on board but then all the sudden pulled out. Something about not wanting to be liable for a toddler dying. Which is ridiculous because if they are as good as they say they are they shouldn't have to worry about that," Draco says harshly, "the party is tommorow! They'll be hearing from the ministry soon on their permits if I can help it..."
"So what are we doing about entertainment?" I ask him. He cringes lightly.
"Rolf Scamander is going to help- with his grandfather," Draco informs me.
"Newt Scamander?! Isn't that a great thing? Why do you seem upset about that?" I ask him.
"Well I have to try to get Luna to agree to go on a date with him," Draco tells me, "Rolf- not his grandfather obviously. Which I have no idea how to get that to happen? Any tips?"
"With Luna? Just that he better let her be herself," I share, "if he doesn't then he won't get anywhere with her. She's very much her own person." Draco sighs lifting the scotch to his lips. Taking a long drink before setting it back down with a groan.
"And don't get me started on my boss- he went on and on about how he really needed me tommorow and asked if there was anyway I could skip the party. The party I had put in the books 6 months ago to make sure I'd be able to spend my son's first birthday with him," Draco rants, "then when I told him no he went on and on about how I really should give more to this department even after every other thing I missed for this stupid job." My eyes widen slightly.
"I didn't know it was that bad," I say to him. He sighs.
"It isn't- I'm fine don't worry."
"Babe clearly it's not fine," I tell him, "you're obviously stressing yourself out." He sighs. I adjust my grip on his hand. "Listen, if this job isn't working out it might be time to look for another. If you aren't happy it isn't worth it."
"No I'm not quitting."
"It's not like we won't survive on just my paycheck," I point out, "and you always wanted to go into a healer job or qudditch-"
"I'm not quitting," Draco says, "I want to stay here- I'm good at what I do and I'm happy here most of the time. I'm just a little exhausted as of late. I just want this investgation to end... It's not that big of a deal."
"Just don't work yourself too hard love," I say to him, "I love you and I don't want anything bad to happen because you worked yourself half to death." He nods lightly. I give him a soft smile. "I do love you."
"I love you too," He says to me.
We don't get much more time for lunch. Soon we are right back to work. The entire minsitry seems to be pushing the limit today. The amount of screams of frustration I've heard or simply just employes complaining about their week. I'm glad the weeking is approaching. Everyone here needs a second to recover. With the tensions as they are I decide to let my department head home slightly early.
"Enjoy your weekends!" I call, "try to relax guys! No need to work yourselves too hard."
"See ya Malfoy!"
"Have a good weekend!"
"Tell little Mikey Happy Birthday for us!"
The others are long gone when I've finally finished my paperwork. I head straight over to Draco's office. However I can see him chatting with Harry. It seems to be intense. I don't really want to interupt. I give a slight knock. His face softens once he sees me peaking into the door.
"Love," He says softly, "oh is it already time for you to head out?"
"I let my department head out early," I tell him, "they were too ansty anyways. No one was getting any work done... You two busy?"
"We got a new lead," Draco says, "which means I'll be home a little late tonight. I'm sorry love... Are you going to be okay?"
"I'll be fine Dray," I tell him, "just don't get too overworked..."
"I won't be too long," He says. I move towards him pulling him into a quick kiss. However when I try to break it he seems desperate to stay in the soft kiss. I comply. Melting into his arms lightly. His hands move to my waist.
"I'm still here," Harry says clearly not happy with the current situation.
"Well then see yourself out," Draco says as he breaks the kiss, "we can finish talking in a second." Harry rolls his eyes harshly. I chuckle lightly.
"I'll see you when you get home Dray," I say as I step back from him, "try not to be too late- I'd hate to go to bed with out you." I give him a quick wink before apparating out. When I reappear in the livingroom I see Narcissa bouncing Barron lightly as Mikey stares at the TV. "Hey Narcissa. How'd it go today?"
"Well," She says, "the boys were pretty good. No fires today which is a big improvement in itself." I chuckle lightly. "Barron did levitate his bottle though. I suspect that his magic is going to be strong and practical just like Blaise."
"Sounds about right," I tell her as I pick Mickey off the ground. "You have a good day Mikey?" He nods. Not really paying attention. I set him back down on the ground and look over to Narcissa. "Blaise and Draco both are going to be late tonight."
"Do you want me to stay then?" She asks.
"No need I can handle them," I tell her, "but I will see you tommorow."
"You sure I don't mind," She offers.
"Nah I'm good here," I tell her, "head on home. I'm sure Lucius has some gossip he's dying to share with you." She chuckles them moves to peck Mikey's cheek. Giving the boys a quick goodbye before handing Barron off to me and apparating away.
"Does miss need anything?" Finn asks as he moves towards me.
"I think I'm fine," I tell him. I set Barron on the play mate so he can keep himself entertained. As the two boys play with the stash of toys I work on getting the last mintue food things set up for tommorow.
When that's done I notice Blaise and Draco are still out. I sigh lightly moving to get the two kids feed and then take them upstairs to get them bathed and ready for bed. They get several stories before they finally fall asleep.
Still not a sound from the other two adults.
I decide to use the time to gather the hundreds of toys littered through the house.
"Hey sorry I'm back so late," Blaise says as he catches me gathering toys from the staircase, "meeting held over... Boys in bed?"
"Yeah," I tell him, "they were really good today. Barron levitated a bottle."
"Exciting," Blaise says, "they get to sleep well?"
"Needed a couple extra stories but they got to bed eventually," I tell him. He moves taking the basket of toys from my arms, "what are you?"
"I'll get these to their room," He says, "I want to check up on them anyways."
"Oh alright," I tell him, "you don't have to tho I've got the basket."
"Nah you deserve a break so go sit down for a second," He tells me. I comply heading to the kitch to grab a glass of wine. After a bit he joins me. But he only stays for a glass before running up to bed. I sigh at the lack of my husband. An owl comes in at about 11.
Love,
I'm sorry I got caught up on my way out. I promise I'll be home soon.
- Draco
I sigh lightly. Not at all suprised. I turn the lights to the kitchen off and decide to head to bed. Not wanting to stay up until godric knows when.
~~~
The next morning as I get up with the sound of crying from the nursery I see Draco finally resting. I move hoping not to wake him. Moving to grab the baby monitor hoping to let him get some sleep.
Blaise is already in the nursery comforting Barron. I chuckle as I pull mikey from the crib.
"Let's get these boys fed," I tell him. We do exactly that. Following through the motions of getting them ready. The food, diapers changed, all that jazz. Then we both settle on the couch as the two kids entertain each other.
"When did Draco come in?" Blaise asks me.
"Wish I knew," I admit as I sip my coffee, "I was asleep when he came in. But I assume late."
"Poor guy," Blaise says, "he's working himself to death."
"I know," I say, "I'm trying to get him to realize that."
Suddenly the blond joins us. Clearly exhausted and not at all ready to start the day.
"Morning love," I say to him.
"Morning," He yawns sitting beside me. He moves laying his head on my lap. I move my free hand to his hair. Pushing it from his eyes. "How long until people get here?"
"3 hours," I tell him, "the decoraters are already out there. Rolf said he'd be here in an hour."
"Kids are dressed," Blaise adds, "now we just have to get dressed."
"We were waiting til your mum and dad got here so they could watch the babies so we could shower," I tell him, "cake people will be here soon."
"So much to be done," He groans.
"Don't worry about it," I tell him, "we can handle it you just head to bed."
"No no you go get ready and I'll watch the kids-"
"Not happening," I tell him, "just go take a nap or something-"
"I'm not sleeping through my sons birthday!" Draco exclaims. The room is slightly taken back at the volume. He sighs. "It's just everyone else seems involved with Mikey except me and well that's why I wanted to throw the party to be involved. Don't take this away from me."
"Draco I'm not taking anything away from you," I tell him, "I'm trying to make sure you take care of yourself."
"I'm fine- I got plenty of sleep," He says, "it's going to be fine."
I sigh loudly. I start to reply but I don't get much of a chance before Draco's parents have already apparated into the room. They start chatting excitedly. Picking up Mikey and talking to Draco. I give Blaise a quick look before I step back.
"I'm going to get ready," I tell them. They nod as I head off. When I get to the escape of my room I growl in frustration. His job is pushing everything and I can't even bring it up with him. I don't know how to get through to him.
"Love."
I look back to see Draco looking over me with a soft layer of guilt.
"I'm sorry I raised my voice I didn't mean to-"
"I'm not mad about you raising your voice," I tell him.
"I still should apologize for it," He says moving to pull my hands into his, "I know that these hours are hard on us. Just know it's not going to last much longer- soon I'll be back to my normal hours."
"I'm just worried for you," I tell him, "I want you to take care of yourself. I want you to come home before midnight. I want you here Dray."
"I'm right here," He says, "I promise that it'll never be like last night again."
"I just want to know that this is all worth it," I tell him, "do you really want this job with them treating you like this?"
"Well considering my boss just was replaced I don't think I'm too worried," Draco says. I raise a brow. "They let Harry take over as Division head. He's incharge of our divison now... Effective last night."
"How'd that happen?"
"Harry found out our boss was feeding false info to the ministry to help the death eaters," Draco explains, "so no more shifts like last night- or working myself to death. Harry made me promise that." I chuckle.
"Well I do have to thank him then," I say to Draco. I smirk lightly. "Well I do think I need a quick shower- want to join me?"
"Yes," He says quickly. I chuckle dragging him into the master bathroom with me.
~~~
After we both head back down stairs with a new found postivity the rest of the set up goes by perfectly. Soon it's time for the party. Everyone seems to be enjoying it. Even though Draco was having his issues with getting it all together. It looks amazing. Little Mikey's having a blast.
"This is pretty bougie for a first birthday," George tells me.
"Oh I agree," I tell him, "but I'm not telling Draco that." My eyes move to my husband and son both with huge smiles as they pet the hippogriff. "So Angie... I heard a rumor. Another small Weasley?"
"Did you hear it from a rumor or from George's big mouth?" She asks me. I chuckle lightly.
"Well I'm no snitch," I tell her, "but George has been bragging in the stock room." She rolls her eyes. George tilts the firewhiskey up. She smacks his arm.
"Ow! Come on I told her and Lee they don't count!"
"Yes they do!"
As they bicker slightly Draco brings Mikey towards me.
"Cake time let's go love," He tells me. I follow suit. He leads us to the large cake covered in a bunch of sculpted creatures. "Alright everyone on 3...1...2...3"
"Happy birthday Happy Birthday to You Happy Birthday dear Mikey! Happy Birthday to You!"
"Blow out the candles Mikey!" I tell him. I move blowing lightly to show him. He tries. His little lungs not doing to much. He gives it one more go and the flame blows out. The group cheers excitedly for him. I smile brightly as I look to Draco and Mikey then over to Blaise and Barron. I wouldn't trade this for the world.
