06: Shocks

I sighed.

Today finally ended.

I couldn't believe that almost every boy I met today tried to seduce me. What would happen tomorrow? I wondered as I climbed the stairs of the small wooden house toward my room, I couldn't help wondering if it would be another disaster. When I reached the door, I unlocked it and entered.

"You're back," Jeannie, my roommate, said as she stared at herself in the mirror, putting some powder on her beautiful face.

I smiled. "Yeah."

"You're going somewhere?" I asked, placing my bag on the bed.

"Yeah. Sleepover. Got to tell you something," she said without looking at me. Although we met just a month ago, I tried to be friendly with her, but she was always like that. Straightforward. Emotionless.

"What is it?" I asked. I thought what she was going to say was that she wasn't coming tomorrow or would come next Monday. She was always out I rarely see her at home.

"The landlord came today and told me that his son is coming next week," she said, putting her sneakers on.

"So?" I gave her a what-are-you-talking-about look.

"So he said to leave his house in two days." She took her bag up. "'Cause this room used to be his son's bedroom, and as his son is returning, he wants his room back."

"What?" My eyes widened. Where the hell I would find a home in two days? "What will I do now?"

I sat on the bed with a shocked expression.

"Find a home," she said with a straight tone as she opened the door. "I'll shift to my uncle's house tomorrow."

Someone lit a small lamp of hope in me.

"Can you, like, ask your uncle to let me live in his house? I'll pay him, just for some days until I get a room," I said in a low pleading voice giving her a hopeful smile.

"Sorry! He doesn't allow strangers in his house," she said with a cold expression.

What the fuck did you mean by a stranger? Do I look like some thief or murderer?

I was your roommate, girl! We'd known each other for a month, and if you wanted some proof, I was ready to give you my college ID card and a copy of my father's driver's license.

And what did you mean he doesn't allow strangers? He would have allowed if you asked him, but since you're a fucking bi-

Anger rushed through my veins. How could someone lie so much to save herself? She didn't even care a bit about me. Not even in the name of friendship, or the so-called friendship we had for a month.

"Oh, okay!" I said, my face still shining, pretending her words didn't affect me at all.

"Hm," she responded with a straight face as she exited, shutting the door making a small noise.

I made my body fall on the bed as I buried my face in it, starting to punch it as if I was fighting with someone.

"What the hell is wrong with my luck?" I shouted. "I hate it. I hate my life!"

What was I gonna do now? In two days. Are you serious?

***

The day started pretty well, my first class was English Literature-my favorite subject other than Physics. When my class ended, I walked on the almost empty hallway toward my next class.

"Hey!" I turned to the direction of the unfamiliar voice and found that it came from the same girl, the one I met yesterday. My eyes widened as I tried to take a step back, looking for an escape route.

"Don't run away like you did yesterday, please."

Maybe, she wasn't as bad as I thought.

"I'm not running away," I said, smiling although I was about to do that but stopped after her plea.

"You're Kim Ivy, right?" she asked confidently.

"Yeah." I nodded, trying to appear confident as well.

"Hmm." She nodded, taking a head-to-toe look of mine.

"You're pretty, you know." She smiled sweetly.

"Thank you!"

"By the way, I'm Choe Irene." She gestured toward her friends. "And she's Boa, Suzy, and Hana."

The girl I described yesterday who was ridiculously dressed was Boa, while Suzy was the other girl whose style I liked. I hadn't seen Hana before, maybe she's new.

"Why did you suddenly leave the class yesterday?" Irene's question made me a little bit scared. What should I say?

Think, Ivy, think. My mind seemed to stop working as nervousness entered my brain.

"Um." I smiled sheepishly. "Actually, my mom called. My dog-Puppy! He's sick!"

They listened with interest, bobbing their heads.

"She called, and I really needed to receive it 'cause nothing's more important than my Puppy. I wanted to know about him." I sighed. Their serious expressions softened a bit.

"Puppy. Is that his name?" Boa asked, and I nodded nervously.

"I like that. It's unique," she said. Everyone nodded in agreement.

"Thanks!" I smiled.

"So how is he okay now?" Suzy asked.

"Uh."

Think, think, think.

"He's dead," I said randomly. Their eyes widened in shock.

What the hell!

"He died yesterday. When I went out of the class to receive the call, my mother informed that he's dead." I made a crying face and acted as if I was stopping the tears to roll down my cheeks.

I knew I had this talent since I was born.

"Oh! I'm so sorry," Irene said, showing a concerned look

"That's the reason I walked out of the class after our class ended. I didn't want to talk to anyone at that moment." I sighed again, looking down

"It's okay," Hana said, putting her hand on one of my shoulder in a way of giving support.

First of all, I didn't have a dog and second even if I wanted to own one, my parents would never allow it 'cause my mom was busy the whole day and she didn't want an extra responsibility. Also, my father was allergic to animals, especially dogs.

I wasn't even allowed to get a pet cat and a dog? That was something out of the universe.

Boa gazed at her phone's screen. "Aren't we late for our class?"

"Yeah! Almost forgot about that." Irene rolled her eyes good-naturedly.

She wasn't that bad. At all. Maybe her dressing style was revealing, but she wasn't that bad and neither were her friends. They were friendly and well-behaved. I liked them.

"Hey, see you later," Irene said.

I smiled. "Yeah! What class do you have?"

"History."

"I have Biology," Hana replied.

"Oh! You have Biology? Isn't that class on Monday?" I asked 'cause all the first-year students' Biology classes were on Monday.

"Yeah! But I'm in the second year." She smiled.

"Oh!" That was the reason I didn't see her yesterday.

"We'll talk to you later," Irene said.

"When?" Suzy asked.

Irene turned to me. "Are you available during lunch?"

I nodded, smiling.

"Then we can hang out outside the college," she said. They all grinned.

What! No, no, no. I wasn't going to leave here.

"Actually, I'm not allowed to go out 'cause mom strictly prohibited it. I also don't have any cash, you know." I smiled sheepishly. Yeah, I had cash, but I wasn't going to waste it outside 'cause the food there was more costly.

"Oh! It's okay!" Irene said, looking a bit disappointed.

"Yeah! We'll see you after lunch, then. We have a class together," Suzy said as she dragged Irene away, along with Boa and Hana.

"How did her phone ring without us hearing it yesterday?" Boa asked Irene in a low suspicious voice. Although they were a little away from me, I could still hear their murmurs, their voices echoing a bit in the hallway. My heart sank as I looked at them nervously.

"Maybe her phone was on vibration mode," Irene said, her voice carelessly loud as if she was sure I wouldn't be able to hear her voice as she along with her friends talked about something else and laughed. I stood there, motionless, seeing their bodies walking away. You couldn't tell what someone was thinking from the outside. I was a little scared and nervous.

My chemistry class started. I hated this subject, though I was the only student in my class who used to get the highest score in Chemistry when I was in high school.

I wasn't a nerd. I was simple. Not too complicated like other girls-that was the reason most of the girls used to find being friends with me boring 'cause I wasn't that educated on important topics like sex, boyfriends, crushes, and ex.

Our professor started to teach one of the chapters of our syllabus. As he began, I noticed how a number of students yawned and stretched their bodies, indicating how bored they already were. I wasn't sleeping nor yawning, I was just looking at my textbook or toward the teacher as if I was thinking deeply about the topic he was teaching us. The teacher scolded a lot of students who he found sleeping during the class. I appeared to be listening attentively, but my mind was lost in the vast universe.

Yeah! You read it right, I was not listening to whatever he was saying cause I was busy thinking about the problem I had to face tomorrow when my landlord would kick me out of his house. I should've asked Irene if she knew someone who had a room for rent, but due to nervousness, I forgot to do it. I sighed, I would ask her about this after lunch. A name popped up in my mind-Suga.

This guy, he almost vanished from my life. I hadn't spotted him anywhere. Like he didn't want to appear before me or he was gone somewhere. Maybe he was busy. I was happy that at least I would feel safe for some time.

Who knew what was going to happen in the future, anyway?

The class ended and our professor asked me to meet him in the staff room. He wasn't that old, maybe in his thirties. He was handsome, though.

"Yes, Sir?" I asked him, standing outside the room.

"Is something wrong? Someone disturbing you?" he asked in a low voice, with a tone of concern.

"No, Sir."

"No, I saw you not paying attention in class. You looked tensed."

So he noticed.

I shook my head. "There's nothing I'm tensed about, Sir. I'm just a bit nervous about Chemistry."

"Okay! Good! But if you have a problem that you want to share, or you need someone to talk to, I'll always be available." He smiled gently. My heartbeat stopped for a second. Was he flirting? No, idiot! He wasn't. Who would flirt with a nerd like you, dumbass!

I nodded, trying hard not to blush.

"Good! You're a good girl!" He patted my head lightly.

I looked down and smiled.

"Thank you, Sir!" I bowed as I walked down the hallway towards the cafeteria. It was lunchtime.

Was he flirting with me? Really! How the hell could someone offer help unless he was interested? What was his name again? It wasn't a Korean one. Pretty unique, I liked it. Um, Arnold? Nah. Armour? Was that even a name?

I chuckled, thinking how silly I was. Simon, John, Jimmy, Amanda. What the heck! How could I forget it so easily? I forget everything, but still. I sighed. I couldn't remember his name, but at least I could call him my Chemistry Professor or Chemistry Sir. I forgot another thing-to ask him if he knew someone who could find me a room for rent.

What a short-term memory I have. Jin was right. Jin! Where was that guy? Suddenly, a bunch of guys passed by, pushing me back, causing me to lose my balance and fall down. I was pissed. How could someone do that? I looked up in anger and my eyes widened-the guys were none other than BTS.

They were walking away as they looked back at me and laughed. Jimin wasn't there. I spotted Jin with them who was also laughing at me and walking away. He didn't help me. He was acting strangely.

Then, I saw Suga who glanced at me with a strange cold expression, his eyes filled with numerous feelings and thoughts that I failed to figure out, but one thing I noticed was he didn't like me. Not an inch. That one look was enough for me to die in horror.

They went away as I managed to stand up. I massaged my back that hurt a little. They were so rude. I was pissed and scared at the same time, but I was more pissed at Jin 'cause I expected help from him. He acted as if he didn't even know me.

I was disgusted.
