RoseGarden (2): Remnant's First Fairytale

Requested by: Starbandit0390
This is based on the Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche.
Once upon a time in the island kingdom of Patch there lived a king named Taiyang. Now Taiyang had two daughters, Princess Yang, from his first marriage, and Princess Ruby, from his second marriage. Yang was a beautiful young woman with a head full of golden blonde curls, but her beauty was nothing compared to her younger sister. Ruby was absolutely stunning and she was beloved by all who laid eyes on her. Everyone loved her so much in fact that they began to pray to her and offer her gifts as if she was a goddess. This however angered the goddess of beauty, Wendy.

Everyday Wendy would watch as the mortals continued to offer gifts and prayers to the human princess. The very sight of it made her sick with rage and jealousy. So, one day she decided to do something about it. Wendy called for her servant, a young love god named Oscar. For you see Oscar had the ability to make anyone fall in love. And this ability made everyone, even the gods themselves, fear him. All that he would have to do is touch Ruby with his enchanted cane and she would fall in love with the first thing she saw.

"Now Oscar I want you to make sure that that girl falls in love with a hideous monster. Understand?" Wendy asked.

Oscar nodded and headed to Patch.

However as soon as he laid eyes on the princess he found himself overcome with love for her. He then realized that he couldn't carry out his job so he decided to return to the palace of the gods. Once he returned he lied to the cruel goddess and told her that he had carried out her plan.

Weeks passed by and Ruby began to worry that she would never find someone that would truly love her. She had dozens and dozens of admirers but because but none of them truly wanted to get to know her Ruby began to feel sad and lonely.

So she decided to visit Weiss the Oracle to ask if she would ever find true love. Weiss consulted her magic mirror and revealed to Ruby that she would indeed find love. The young princess was ecstatic. However, the Oracle warned her that her lover would be a horrifying monster that even the gods themselves feared.

Unsure of what to do, Ruby returned home. But when she told her father what she had learned Tai began to fear for the safety of his kingdom. So, he decided that the best thing to do would be to send Ruby away. That way when her monster lover came to find her nobody would get hurt.

The princess was heartbroken but the king's decision was final. So Ruby was sent away to the edge of Patch to wait for the monster she was destined to fall in love with to find her. After waiting there for a good while she was approached by Mercury, the messenger of the gods. He scooped the beautiful princess up in his arms and carried her to a palace in the nearby kingdom of Vale.

Ruby was taken aback by the breathtaking beauty of the palace. Beautiful columns held up the ceiling that was decorated with golden swirls. Sunlight streamed through the opened windows, lighting up every room with a warm glow.

As Mercury left her the princess was approached by several wind spirits who led her to a bedroom. This room was the only darkened room in the whole palace.

Cautiously Ruby stepped inside, "hello?"

"Hello princess," a voice called back.

Ruby tried to turn on a light so she could see who was talking to her but she felt the mysterious stranger grab her arm.

"No. Please. Don't look at me. I'm a horrible creature feared by man and god alike, I don't want to frighten you." The voice said.

"Oh. Well how do I know I can trust you?" Ruby asked.

The stranger grabbed her hand and kissed the back of it, "I love you Princess Ruby and I want you and me to be together forever. You can stay here in the palace. My servants will bring you whatever you want and you can do as you please. My only request is that you let me stay hidden."

The princess thought for a moment, "can I at least know your name?"

"Oscar," the voice spoke.

Ruby nodded, "Alright Oscar. I'll do it."

From then on Ruby lived in the palace alongside Oscar. During the day she would explore the gorgeous castle and the surrounding kingdom and at night she would sit in the darkened bedroom that she now shared with the young love god and they would discuss their hopes and dreams.

Ruby continuously sent letters to her family to them about her new life in Vale and after a year her big sister Yang decided to visit.

They took a walk in the garden together and the young princess told her big sister all about her new life with Oscar.

Yang however didn't like that Oscar was being so mysterious and that he wouldn't allow Ruby to see his face.

"Are you sure he's not dangerous?" Yang asked.

Ruby stopped in her tracks, "dangerous?"

The golden blonde nodded, "yes. He won't let you see him. That doesn't sit well with me, what if he's dangerous."

"Yang-" Ruby began but her sister cut her off.

"I'm just looking out for you Ruby. I don't want him to hurt you."

The younger princess sighed, "Well what do you suggest I do?"

"Sneak into the room tonight with a candle," Yang said, "try to get a good look at him. If he really is a monster then kill him."

Ruby was horrified, "I can't kill him!"

"It's the only way to guarantee your safety."

The young woman was heartbroken at the thought of killing someone especially someone that she had grown to care for, but she realized her big sister was right.

So, that night while Oscar slept Ruby snuck out the room before returning with a candle and a dagger. Slowly she lit the candle and let the warm glow fall on the mysterious young man's face.

Ruby was taken aback when she saw how handsome Oscar was as he laid there asleep. He was shirtless allowing the young woman to get a good look at his warm tan skin tone along with his slightly toned arms. He had an adorable spray of freckles across his face and unkept dark brown hair that was messy but in a cute way.

The young princess felt a blush creep up on her face as she stared at the young man that she now knew without a doubt that she was in love with. And now she knew that he wasn't just kind but handsome as well.

Unfortunately Ruby was leaned over so far that she didn't notice the candle in her hand was melting. Hot wax ran down the side and couple drops fell onto Oscar's exposed arm waking him up almost immediately.

"Ow!" Oscar shouted in pain as he clutched his arm.

Ruby paled and backed up.

"Wait. Ruby? What's going on?" Oscar asked. Then his eyes fell on the candle and the dagger, "you broke your promise."

Tears filled the princess's silver eyes, "Oscar I'm sorry I-"

But the young god ignored her and he vanished in a puff of smoke, returning to the realm of the gods.

Ruby sunk to the ground and sobbed heavily, she was heartbroken that she had destroyed Oscar's trust in her.

Meanwhile in the realm of the gods Wendy was fixing up Oscar's arm as he told her what happened. The cruel goddess then decided that this would be the perfect time to exact her revenge on Ruby and to make her suffer.

So, as she left her servant to recover from his burns, Wendy headed to the mortal world and found Ruby sitting on her bed with her knees pulled up to her chest.

"What's wrong?" Wendy asked feigning sympathy.

Ruby sniffed and wiped the tears from her silver eyes, "I broke a promise to someone I love and I'm afraid that he hates me now."

"Oh you poor thing," Wendy said pulling Ruby into her arms, "you know if you like I can help you get your lover back."

The princess looked up at her, "you can?"

"Of course, I am the goddess of love after all. But before you can win him back you must first complete three tasks for me."

"What would I have to do?"

"I'm so glad you asked," the goddess said taking her hand. Using her magic she then sent the two of them to the top of a tall tower. Wendy then made several buckets appear, each one full of a different type of grain, and dumped them onto the wooden floor.

"You have one day to sort all the grains by type. If you do this you'll be on your way to seeing your lover again."

Ruby shook her head vigorously, "I understand. Thank you."

Wendy smiled at her and left the tower, but as she did she smirked evilly to herself, "foolish girl. She'll never be able to complete this task."

After the goddess left Ruby got to work sorting the grains but it was much harder then it looked. She began to fear that she wouldn't be able to complete the task which meant that she would never be able to see Oscar again.

"Excuse me. Princess?" A voice suddenly asked.

Ruby lifted her head up, "who said that?"

"Down here." The voice said.

Ruby looked down to see a little ant. "Oh hello there."

The ant waved its front left leg, "I couldn't help but overhear what you have to do with these grains. If you want we insects can help you.

The redheaded princess breathed a sigh of relief, "that would be wonderful. Thank you."

The ant nodded and began gathering bugs from outside and inside the tower. Soon a huge swarm of all different kinds of insects appeared. One by the one they helped Ruby sort the big pile of grain. In no time at all her task was complete.

The next morning Wendy returned to the tower fully expecting to find that Ruby had given up. Instead she found the young princess peacefully asleep next to the sorted piles of grain.

"You finished?!" She screamed.

Ruby snapped awake and looked up at the goddess, "oh. My task. Yes I completed it. Now can you please help me when Oscar back?"

"No. This was only the first task. You still have two more to complete."

The love goddess then sent them to the edge of a river. She pointed to a nearby grazing heard of sheep, "for your next task bring me back as much fleece as you can carry from those golden sheep."

Ruby nodded and headed up the hillside to where the sheep were grazing.

She was about to grab some fleece off one when someone shouted at her to stop.

Ruby looked up to see a young woman with short silver hair and wolf fangs standing there.

"Those sheep are brutal if you try and take their wool. Believe me I know." The woman said.

"But I have to get their wool." The princess explained.

"In that case get some from the thorn bush over there. The sheep run into it all the time and get pieces of wool stuck on it."

Ruby thanked the woman and went to the bush and began plucking off as much wool as she could carry. She then took it all back to Wendy.

Well now the goddess was even angrier then before, not only had the sheep not killed the princess but she had completed another seemingly impossible task.

Suddenly she got an idea and made a box materialize, "Alright Ruby for your final task take this to the underworld and fill it with beauty from the Grimm goddess Salem."

"The underworld?" Ruby squeaked.

"What's wrong? Don't think you can do it?"

"N-no I can do it," Ruby insisted.

She took the box from Wendy and headed to the entrance to the underworld. When she got there she was immediately attacked by several Wyvern, dragon like monsters who guarded the underworld. But by this point the gods themselves had heard of Wendy's schemes to harm the mortal princess. So, Ozpin, the king of the gods himself, sent two of his servants, a crow and a raven, to distract the beasts so Ruby could slip by.

Once she did she wasted no time in finding the Grimm goddess Salem.

"Who dares enter my domain?!" The goddess boomed.

Ruby sunk to her knees, "forgive me your grace. But the goddess of love Wendy has sent me here for some of your beauty. Please may I have just a little?"

"You wish to have some of my beauty?" Salem asked.

The princess nodded.

Salem raised her hand and the box glowed, "there it is done."

Ruby was ecstatic, "oh thank you. Thank you so much."

She then ran out of the underworld clutching the box to her chest. However, just then she took a good look at her own ragged appearance.

"I'm a mess. How can I expect to see Oscar again looking like this?"

She then looked over at the box and got an idea. Slowly she pried the lid open just a little bit to let some of the beauty inside it seep out to fix her appearance.

However, Salem had lied to Ruby, the box didn't contain beauty, instead it contained a strange black substance that killed whoever unleashed it. The evil substance wrapped itself around Ruby before suffocating her and leaving her to die at the entrance of the underworld.

Meanwhile back in the realm of the gods Oscar had recovered from his burns and wanted to return to the mortal world to see Ruby. But, before he could, Wendy returned to tell him that his beloved had died. The young god was horrified but he refused to believe her and flew off to find Ruby.

When he finally did find her he immediately held her in his arms but it was too late. The princess was, in fact, dead.

Oscar felt tears form in his eyes, "my poor sweet Ruby." He cupped her cheek in his hand, "I wish you were here with me now. I would tell you how much I loved you."

He leaned down and kissed her cold lips.

However, just then Oscar's love for Ruby was so pure that it was able to pull the curse from her body when he kissed her.

Slowly the princess's silver eyes fluttered open, "Oscar?"

Oscar began to cry tears of joy, "Ruby! Oh Ruby you're ok!"

Ruby held his hand, "I was so afraid I would never see you again."

The young love god kissed her once again, "Ruby I love you so much and I never want to be apart again. Please will you marry me?"

Ruby blushed, "of course I will."

Oscar then picked her up in his arms and carried her to the realm of the gods.

Once there he told the other gods how much Ruby meant to him and how he didn't want anything to separate them. So, Ozpin gave the princess a drink of ambrosia turning her immortal. Ruby was now a goddess meaning she could marry Oscar as an equal.

So, as the gods and goddesses surrounded the happy couple Oscar and Ruby were married. The two of them then returned to the mortal world to help other people find their true loves. And, of course, they both lived happily ever after.
