prologue
The start of something new
AFTER HER PARENTS DIED, nothing made sense to Suki Kim anymore. Her days seemed longer, the little pleasures in life no longer made her smile, and she was no longer the same girl. Yes, she could pretend all she wanted that things were going to be okay but, deep down inside she knew things would never be the same. Somehow, she convinced herself that if she smiled through the pain, one day it would be authentic.
So far, it hadn't worked.
The thing Suki would soon realize is, you have to work on your happiness, it doesn't just come all at once, it sneaks up on you like a thief in the night. You have no say in what or who makes you happy and no matter how badly you fight it, it's there and it doesn't just disappear, when you think about it happiness and sadness are one in the same.
She remembered what true happiness felt like at her parent's funeral, when she was saying goodbye to her best friend Thomas, and now as she walked up to the Salvatore boarding house because at the end of the day, to know happiness you must know sadness. Here, she would find love, heartbreak, friends, enemies, and maybe even a brotherly figure or two.
Putting on the brightest smile she could, Suki knocked softly on the door three times. As she waited, the girl couldn't help but feel scared out of her mind. For all she knew, she could be stepping into a home straight out of A series of unfortunate events and her new guardians could've been crazy. When those thoughts crept their way in, a man opened the door and smiled sweetly at her, a smile she could tell was just as sad as hers.
"We've been expecting you." he stepped aside and allowed her to walk in the house. "I'm Stefan, and uncle Zach isn't here right now but, he is the one that runs this place."
"He's not your dad?" Suki asked, she immediately regretted the question but, she had always been extremely nosy, a trait that wouldn't leave her anytime soon.
"Nope, my parents are both... dead." It seemed like he had told this to a million people before but, it didn't stop the Kim girl from feeling bad about her snooping, she never knew how to just shut her mouth.
"I'm sorry." the young girl frowned, lightly clearing her throat as she looked down at her feet.
"I'm sorry about your parents too." Stefan replied before reaching down to take her bags, picking them up before heading inside and up the stairs. "I hope you know, you don't have to be scared, everything will be okay here. I promise."
"I'm not scared." Suki quickly cleared her throat at that, she was usually better at hiding things, you could only tell she was scared when you could hear her heart racing like crazy, which was sort of impossible unless you had a stethoscope.
"I'm nervous too, new family member, new school in a month." The Salvatore chuckled and stopped walking, leaning on the staircase railing.
"You are going to be new too?" The Kim girl questioned, she just assumed he went to Mystic Falls High already, which meant she had a buddy to go through the dreaded new kid phase with.
"Yup, me and you are going to get through this together." The teen spoke, smiling lightly at her, and this time it was a genuine smile.
Suddenly, being in Mystic Falls didn't seem so bad for Suki Kim, yet.
AUTHORS CORNER —
Hehe i'm excited for this, like extremely excited, hope you enjoyed the prologue!
Chapter one will be out soon and i'm probably going to cut a lot of Vicki and Jeremy scenes because that was like...almost pedophilia. Vicki was like 18 and Jeremy was 14 so yeah, not writing it.
Thank you for starting to read Smile!
