When Changbin got home from school later that day he wasn't expecting for his parents to be home from work, but just as luck would have it, they were sitting at the dinner table when he walked in. His mother looked up from the book she had been reading and smiled softly at her son.
"Oh, Changbin, welcome home. How was school?" She asked and Changbin scoffed, rolling his eyes at her question. He knew that she didn't really care how his day was, he knew that she just said that since that's what normal mothers did. Normal mothers actually cared how their kid's day went and what they did at school, but his mother didn't. She just knew it sounded nice and like the right thing to say, so that's why she said it.
"It was fine." He said simply as he dropped his bag by the wall and took a seat at the table across from his parents. He already knew what his parents wanted from him and he really didn't want to sit and listen to their bullshit, well, his mother's bullshit, any longer than he had to. His mom gave him an awkward smile and closed her book, setting her reading glasses on top of it. She folded her hands and looked to her husband, who was too busy reading the paper to notice that the two were waiting for him. Classic dad Changbin thought to himself and clicked his tongue rather loudly, hoping to get his dad's attention. At this point, he didn't really care if his father got angry with him for interrupting him, he just wanted to get the conversation over with.
After another minute of silence, his dad cleared his throat and folded the news paper, tossing it to the side. He looked up with an apathetic expression, and Changbin had to stifle a laugh. It wasn't a laugh of amusement, but more of disbelief. The fact that his dad was looking at him as if he was a lost cause was rich to him. Their only son was a disappointment, all because he didn't want to have his life planned out for him without him having any say in it whatsoever. Changbin just leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms, mirroring his dad's apathy adding with it a sense of defiance.
"Son-"
"I have a name."
"Son," his dad continued without any regards to Changbin's comment. "You already know what this conversation is about. Your mother and I think that it would be best if you look at a few colleges over seas. You're third year is coming to an end soon and you really should start looking into colleges. You're mother and I made an appointment for you to visit KAIST this weekend. You'll be touring the campus and checking out the classes. I will also be checking out some colleges for you in the States, mainly in California, so look into those as well. I also put a call in to the Dean at-"
"Just stop!" Changbin shouted and stood up from his chair with such a force that it fell backwards. "First of all, I still have a couple of months until I graduate and if I didn't already know what I was going to do I would be looking at colleges, but I already know what I'm going to do. I don't need you or mom telling me what to do, where I'm going to go to college, and what I'm going to do with my life. It isn't up to you! This isn't your life, so stop trying to make it!" Changbin was so frustrated at his parents.
His dad just stared at him before letting out a loud sigh and rubbing his temples. "Son, I already told you that you aren't doing music. That's a child's dream and you need to grow out of it! You need to grow up and focus on something that you will actually succeed at! But instead, you insist on chasing this childish fantasy of yours, which just proves how much of a disappointment you are to your mother and I."
Changbin was on the verge of tears, but he wasn't sure why. He wasn't the kind of person to get super emotional about things, especially if that thing was his parents. He was so used to his parents controlling him and his life and not living up to their expectations of him that it never really phased him, but something clicked in Changbin's brain that caused what his dad had just said to him to hurt him a lot more than it should have. He couldn't think of anything to say to his father, so he just turned around, grabbed his bag from the floor and headed for the door. His mother called after him but Changbin pushed her voice away and just started running. He had no idea where he was going, but he knew that he just had to get away there.
~
He had no idea where he was, all he knew was that he was somewhere in Seoul. His eyes stung from the tears that ended up escaping his eyes as he ran. Once they started, they wouldn't stop. Even after Changbin decided that he wasn't upset at his father anymore, they just wouldn't stop. It was only after he had stopped outside of a small convenience store was he able to wipe his eyes and get a hold of his tears. He stood outside of the small store for a moment, looking up at the bright fluorescent sign that hung above the front door. He was drawn back after his stomach yelled at him for food. Changbin dug around in his bag for his wallet, making sure that he had enough money for some food.
The bell above the door dinged as he opened it and stepped inside. He greeted the cashier as he walked by the counter to the far isle where he knew the ramen would be. Even though he had never been to this specific shop, most small stores were the same, something that he appreciated very much.
He was scanning the shelves for whatever ramen flavor sounded good when the sound of the bell above the door followed by a familiar voice drew his attention away from the salty foods.
"Hey Jungkook."
"Hey Felix. 'Nother long night?"
"Yeah, just grabbing some quick snacks for Olivia."
Changbin listened to the short conversation between the two. What is Felix doing way out here? Especially this late? Changbin was so distracted by his own thoughts that he didn't notice Felix enter the same isle.
"Changbin?" Only after Felix said his name did Changbin come back from his thoughts. He looked at the boy on the other end of the isle and tried to fake being surprised.
"Oh, Felix! What are you doing here?" His voice gave him away, sounding a bit too surprised for it to be real. Changbin just picked up the closest pack of ramen and started to fiddle with the corners of the plastic.
Felix let out a short laugh and approached Changbin, picking up a pack of ramen and inspecting it. "I could be asking you the same thing."
"Huh... Well, I've got nothing but time so do you want to sit down and talk?" Changbin asked, secretly pleading that he'd say yes. Not only was Changbin glad to finally be talking to Felix again, he just really needed to talk to someone. He would have called Jisung, but Changbin didn't feel like explaining the whole thing over the phone, even though he knew Jisung would understand what the situation was.
"Well... sure. Olivia is in a safe place so I can talk for a bit."
The two payed for their food. Changbin got a pack of Jjamppong ramen for himself and a box of Choco Pies for the two to share, while Felix got three packs of some sort of veggie noodles which Changbin assumed were for his sister, a thing of spicy noodles and a bunch of sweet stuff, along with a few cokes. Once the two were finished making their late night snacks, they sat down at a table outside of the store. Before either of them started talking, Changbin pulled out the box of Choco Pies and opening it, spilling it's contents on the table.
"So," Felix asked as he grabbed a pie from the center of the table. "You wanna tell me what you're doing so far from our neighborhood this late?" He had a soft smile on his face as he asked the question. For whatever reason, Felix's smile made Changbin's heart flutter. It wasn't a forced smile, nor was it one of humor. He seemed genuinely pleased and happy, and Changbin assumed that it was because he was enjoying the familiar treat. He had no idea how wrong he was.
"You know, you should smile more." Changbin completely ignored the latter's question. Felix stopped chewing on his treat and stared at Changbin.
"Yah, don't think I'll let you get away from answering my question just because you complimented me." Felix's voice sounded normal and relaxed, but he was so far from it. He was just glad that lighting was dim so Changbin couldn't see the tint of pink his cheeks had flushed.
"Do I really have to explain first?" Changbin groaned as he played with his steaming noodles.
"It'll probably be best if you do Changbin." Changbin took notice of how Felix's voice changed from playful to serious.
"Alright... I kind of maybe sort of ran away..." His voice fell towards the end of the sentence. Felix, who was in the middle of eating his noodles, stopped chewing for the second time. He looked at Changbin with a serious face, at least as serious as he could get with cheeks filled with noodles.
"Wait," he said after swallowing the noodles. "You ran away?" Changbin nodded. "But why?"
"It's kind of hard to explain, but basically my parents want to control my life and if I won't let them, then I'm a disappointment." He explained with a shrug and grabbed a pie. He took it out of the plastic wrapping, but didn't eat it. Instead, he just played with it, rolling it back and forth on the table.
Felix watched Changbin play with the treat and chuckled. "You're wasting a perfectly good pie ya know."
Changbin laughed and set the pie down on the plastic wrapping he had taken it out of. "Sorry. How about you? Why are you here?"
Felix sighed and set down his chopsticks. "It's also kind of hard to explain and a bit of a long story."
"I got nothing but time."
He looked at Changbin, who was giving him a comforting smile. Felix realized that that was the first time he had ever really seen Changbin smile. He's smiled before, but not like he was now, and Felix didn't want it to go away.
"Ya know," A grin formed on Felix's lips. "You should really smile more."
Changbin let out an unrestrained laugh, which Felix absolutely loved. "Ha! Stealing my lines eh?"
Felix shrugged. "Maybe. But I'm here because I was visiting someone in the hospital."
The smile on Changbin's lips disappeared and turned into a frown, which is exactly what Felix didn't want. "Well, it must be a family member if Olivia is there too. Is everything okay?"
"Not really."
"Do you mind if I ask who it is?"
Felix hesitated for a moment. No one knew, not even Jeongin, why he had moved to Korea. He didn't want anyone feeling pity for him. He hated when people pretended to be nice only because they know that something was wrong. He hated it even more when people would avoid him because they knew something was wrong. It's exactly what happened at his school back in Sydney and he really didn't want that to happen here. After a moment of thought, he nodded, reassuring himself that it would be alright to tell Changbin.
"My mom."
At first, Changbin felt sad. Then confused. Then angry. Then all three. He was sad because Felix's mom was in the hospital, apparently very ill, but he was confused because he thought that the lady that Felix was living with was his mother, but he felt angry because apparently she wasn't and Felix had been lying to him the entire time. Before Changbin could ask the obvious question, Felix beat him to it.
"The lady Olivia and I are living with is our Aunt. Mom got super sick a few years ago. It started off as a cold, but that became the flu, which became pneumonia. She eventually got better, but about two years ago, she collapsed while she was making dinner. We took her to the hospital and she stayed there for a couple days to get some tests and stuff done, and then came home. Everything was fine but last year she collapsed again, but this time she didn't wake up as quickly as she did the last time. She had a bunch of tests done, but they couldn't figure out what was wrong, so she's been transferred all over the place. Eventually, they decided to send her here to try out some new experimental treatment for patient's with degenerative diseases, but it didn't work. The only thing that the doctors know is that her organs are slowly shutting down so it has something to do with her nervous system or something."
Changbin nodded, not entirely sure with what else he should say. "Why do you guys live with your aunt though?" was the only thing he could think about saying.
"Oh, well, our dad had to stay in Sydney because of work, but we had an aunt in Seoul, which is the woman we are staying with now." Changbin nodded again. "And the reason we haven't told anyone this is because we don't really like pity. We went through a hard time back in Sydney after mom got sick and neither of us want to repeat that."
Again, Changbin nodded. Any feelings of anger and confusion were long gone by now, only leaving sadness. Changbin bit his lip, not sure if he should ask his question, but he decided fuck it.
"Is that why you created X?"
Felix froze, obviously stiffening in his chair. After a moment of agonizing silence, Felix relaxed. "Yes. Like I told you in our messages, I never wanted it to get this far. No one would understand. Aside from my mom, I have my own problems, and being in a foreign country and not knowing anyone, barely knowing the language, it was too much. I just used X as a way to vent, but people got interested. I couldn't stop because I had no other way of coping, so I just kept it going." Felix's voice was raspy, obviously from him trying to keep his emotions under control. Changbin let out a quiet sigh and started cleaning up the table. Felix scrunched his nose. "What are you doing?"
"Starting a seance, what does it look like I'm doing? Come one, grab your stuff." Felix said as he grabbed his half empty bowl of ramen and threw it out.
"Where are we going?"
"Somewhere that I like to go to relax and clear my mind, and no it isn't the roof at the school. If I'm not mistaking, it's not too far from here." Changbin had put the box of left over Choco Pies in his bag and started walking across the street, Felix fumbling behind him.
