Lucina x Male Reader: Third-Wheeling

Hey guys, guess what???
I'm doing my first ever
Male X-reader. 😁 yay!

*Cricket noises*

Okay, so no one really cares, but whatever. LOL
This was suggested by my gamer friend:
thegreenhairedboy

IMPORTANT NOTE!!!
My editor and I pondered the concept of a Smash Bros. "x-reader", and found that it doesn't make much sense. We both appreciate logic, and so we needed some continuity. After all, it wouldn't make much sense for you to be in Smash Bros., seeing as it's a video game filled with video game characters. We are not video game characters... Or are we? Lucky for us, some of the characters in Smash Bros. are actually customizable player avatars, like Corrin and Robin. If you insert yourself in the place of one of these characters, you actually have a valid reason for existence in the world of Smash, without giving up your name or appearance. As such, these stories are written with you, the reader, acting as one of these avatars. (And by "one of these", I mean either Corrin or Robin, because, who wants to be Villager? And also, screw the Mii fighters.) I know this monologue was probably long and boring, and I apologize, but I needed to get this out there, because I hate it when a story has no context.

Anyway, (LOL) enjoy the story~

It was a warm afternoon at the Smash mansion, and you had decided to go on a walk around the gardens with one of your closest friends: Lucina.
You had been trying to figure out a way to tell her that you liked her as more than just a friend for the longest time now, but you still hadn't come up with anything.
It was all either too corny or too confusing.

"(Y/n)?" Lucina poked you, snapping you from your thoughts.
"Huh? Oh. What is it Lucy?"
You smiled down at her.
"I have something to ask you."
She stated simply.
"Go ahead." You shrugged.

"Why did the chicken cross the road?"
She asked you curiously, tilting her head sideways.

"Umm. What?" You raised an eyebrow.
"What does this have to do with anything?"

"Well, yesterday Roy was trying to teach me some jokes, and he asked me why the chicken crossed the road.
So after contemplating all the reasons why the chicken may have crossed the road, I picked the most likely answer. There was no chicken. It was simply a metaphorical chicken we were talking about, and therefore any roads it crossed would exist solely to make a point of some kind. But Roy said I was wrong. I want to know what the correct answer is."
She frowned.

"Uh..." You blinked.

Lucina did not understand most humor, or...any humor really.
Roy tried to help her by telling her jokes each week, but she never understood those either, and always tended to overthink the answers.
And by the time she'd figure them out, they weren't funny anymore.
(Not like most of them were funny in the first place, but still.)

It annoyed most of the other Smashers, but you didn't mind.
You found it adorable that she always asked you to explain the jokes she'd hear.

"What was your second guess?" You asked, thinking it might have been closer.

"That the chicken was in a hurry to get somewhere, and was also very young. She just didn't understand the dangers of crossing the road, or that it was illegal to cross without using a designated crosswalk."
Lucina nodded.

"O-oh." You bit your lip, trying not to laugh.
"Umm, those are both very good answers, but the real answer is
'To get to the other side.'"
You smiled.

"That's not funny though." Lucina pointed out, her blue eyes showing hints of annoyance.
"Well, you're right, it's not. But I don't really think that riddle-type jokes are all that funny."
You shrugged.

"Isn't that the point of a joke?"
She inquired, her dark blue hair waving, carried on by a gentle breeze.
"To be funny?"

"Well, yeah-" you said, trying to think of a way to explain this to her.
"It's- complicated." You stated, unsure of what else to tell her.

"Oh, okay." She shrugged.
"I guess it's not all that important."

The two of you continued walking, glancing around at the flowers.
"So." Lucina sighed.
"Knock knock."

Your lips curved upwards in a slight smile as you glanced at her, deciding to go along with it.
"Who's there?" You asked.

"Lettuce." She smiled.

"Lettuce who?" You inquired.

"Lettuce in and you'll find out!" Lucina grinned, proud of her attempt at humor. "How was that one?"
"It was...cute." You laughed sympathetically.

"How is Chrom? We've been so busy that I haven't been able to talk to him lately." You asked her, expertly changing the subject.
"Oh, father? He is faring quite well." Lucina beamed, dropping her arms to her sides and swinging them as she continued walking.

"That's good." You nodded absentmindedly.
There had to be some way to tell her.
"Um, Lucy..." You stated, forcing the words out of your mouth.
"Hmm? What is it (Y/n)?" she asked.

"I really like-" you started, making the mistake of glancing up to look at her. You paused for a moment as her even gaze met yours. "Umm... French Fries." You finished awkwardly. Your face flushed and you quickly looked to your side.
"Want to go get lunch?"
You mentally slammed your head against a brick wall.
Why? Why? Why? I'm so stupid. Mastery of magic? Easy. Brilliant tactics? Please. Military operations? No problem. People called you a genius tactician. You literally fought a giant gorilla, a ravenous dinosaur, and a literal goddess, among others, on a daily basis. So why was this so hard for you?

"Oh." Lucina looked at the ground, a slight frown visible on her face. "Yes, that sounds lovely." She agreed, looking up again. A gentle smile had quickly replaced her frown.
"Awesome." You sighed, forcing a smile of your own.
"We can go wherever you want princess." You poked her playfully, trying to lighten the mood.

"Aww, that's sweet (Y/n). But I think you should choose." she smiled.

"No, no. I insist. You choose." you grinned.

"Oh, alright." Lucina laughed. "How about... Wendy's?" she suggested.
"Sounds good to me." you shrugged.
The two of you walked to your car and climbed in.

"Hey guys!" Chrom called, running over to your car door.
You sighed, rolling down the window.
"Here we go..."

"Whatcha doin?" Chrom asked, leaning in your window and wiggling his eyebrows at you.
"Just going to lunch."
You sighed, hoping Chrom would drop the subject and leave.
"Oh-ho-ho. With my daughter I see." Chrom raised an eyebrow suspiciously.
"Um. Yes." You stated.
"Do I need to give you the 'dad talk'?" he frowned, glancing from you to Lucina.

"I'd honestly prefer you didn't." you muttered.
"Too bad!" Chrom laughed, opening your car door.

"Wha-Chrom!" you exclaimed as he pulled you out of the car.

"Listen up (Y/n)... I'm just kidding." Chrom chuckled. "You're so fun to mess with."

"Really Chrom?!?" You sighed, rolling your eyes. You climbed back in the car and slammed the door shut.
"Have fun on your date!" Chrom teased, waving you off.
You groaned, rolling up the window and pulling out of the parking lot. His teasing was made that much worse by the fact that you knew you deserved it. You had been relentless in teasing Chrom about his wife ever since they had gone on their first date, and now karma had it in for you...

"I love him to death, but Chrom can be so annoying sometimes." you muttered, shaking your head in frustration.
"Indeed." Lucina nodded in agreement.
"Wait- you love father? Mother was right! She's always teasing father about you, but I didn't think she meant it!" she stated, her mouth hanging open in shock.

"No, no, no! I mean, as a friend, obviously." You clarified, glancing at her.
"Oh. Right." she blushed. "My apologies. I'm afraid I still don't quite have a firm grasp on humor yet..." she muttered, frowning.
"It's fine Lucy, you'll get it... someday."
You smiled at her and continued driving towards the restaurant.

When you finally arrived there, the two of you walked in and ordered, before filling your cups with soda from the machines and finding a seat.
"Wow, hi Chrom." You said, raising an eyebrow at him.
"Crazy to see you here."

"Oh! Hi (Y/n)." Chrom smiled at you, waving. "I know right! It's totally crazy that we both happened to be in the same restaurant at the same time." Chrom laughed. "I'm not third-wheeling you guys or anything, but just know... I have my eyes on you."

"Wonderful." You rolled your eyes, walking to the other end of the restaurant.

Lucina was waiting patiently at the table, and set down her cup when you finally slouched into your seat.
"Tell me (Y/n), do you fancy anyone currently?" She asked, taking a sip of her Pepsi.

"W-what? You really don't see like the type to talk about this sort of stuff." You laughed nervously, tugging at your shirt collar, a blush creeping to your cheeks.

"Oh, you're right. I'm usually not, but the author needed this topic to come up somehow, and you sure as heck weren't going to be the one to introduce it. You're a nervous wreck right now." Lucina smiled at you sweetly.

"W-what?" You glanced around.
"Author? Lucy what are you talking about? And also, I'm not nervous. I'm just hanging out with a close, uh... comrade (saying "friend" would be way too friendzone-y)... What's there to be nervous about?"

"Nothing." She shook her head.
"Nothing at all. Anyway, you never answered my question." she stated, leaning over the table curiously.

"O-oh. Well, maybe there is...someone...but it's not really important..." you stuttered.
"Oh." Lucina exhaled.
"Okay."

The two of you waited in silence for a moment before she broke it.
"I like someone too... He's very smart and kind, and he has an amazing personality."
She smiled, her cheeks glowing as she looked down at the table.

"Cool. Who?" You asked casually, taking a sip from your cup, while your heart hammered in your chest.
"Ike."
She smiled at you.

"W-what!?" you coughed, holding a napkin to you mouth.
"I'm just kidding (Y/n)." Lucina laughed.
"It's you."

You tried to speak, but all of a sudden your tongue felt like a block of wood. It was as if your jaws had been glued together.
"Was that joke not funny?" Lucina asked worriedly.
"I thought it was funny, but I'm sorry if you did not. I knew I should not attempt to make a joke in serious times. But you always make jokes, so I figured that maybe if you thought I was funny we could-"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" you smiled, putting a finger to her lips in an attempt to stop her rambling.
"I like you too Lucy. And your joke was fine."

"Y-you do?" She asked, her eyes widening.
"Truly?"

"Yes." You chuckled. "I like you, a lot Lucy."

A smile slowly spread across her face, her blue eyes shining.
"Wow. This is great!"

"Yeah." You nodded in relief.

"Sooo..." Lucina grinned.
"Are we boyfriend and girlfriend now?" She asked you, tilting her head curiously.

"I guess." You shrugged.
"Good. That means I can do this." Lucina smiled, leaning over the table and placing a soft kiss on your lips.

"WHOA! HEY CHROM!" A familiar voice yelled from behind you.
The two of you quickly broke apart blushing, spinning your head around to look at Roy, who was sitting in the booth behind you.

"R-Roy?!? Really?" you hissed quietly.
"Gods, don't tell Chrom." you pleaded. "Please."

"Oh-ho-ho. But it would make this story so much more interesting." Roy grinned.
"Yo Chrom! This kid kissed Lucina!"

"HE DID WHAT?!?." Chrom yelled, standing up and narrowing his eyes at you. "(Y/n)..." He shook his head disappointedly. "I didn't want to have to do this." He sighed, cracking his knuckles.

"Oh crap!" You jumped out of your seat, darting out of the restaurant with Chrom hot on your tail.
"Bye Lucy! I'll talk to you later!"
You called over your shoulder, jumping into your car and starting it.
You rolled out of the parking lot and
started driving down the street.
You breathed a sigh of relief, wiping the sweat off your forehead.
"Phew..."

"We're not done yet!" Chrom yelled, leaping onto the hood of your car and holding on to the sides for dear life.
"C-Chrom?!?! What the heck?!?"
You yelled, swerving across lanes of traffic with people honking behind you.
"Get off my car!"

"No!" He yelled back, scooting himself forward with his hands.

You pulled into a parking lot, hurriedly parking your car and climbing out.
"C-Chrom?" You asked nervously.
"Why, hello (Y/n)." Chrom said calmly, sliding off of your car.
"I believe we need to have a talk." He rolled up his sleeve.
"Oh gods, please don't kill me!" you begged helplessly.

~Meanwhile~

"I would suck if Chrom killed (Y/n)."
Roy stated, biting off a piece of his french fry.
"Father wouldn't kill his best friend. Don't be silly." Lucina replied calmly.

"Whatever you say." Roy shrugged, scooting into your seat and starting to eat your food.
"I'm back." You announced, walking back into the restaurant.
"How did you escape?" Roy asked in shock, his mouth hanging open, a half-chewed French Fry falling out of it.
"Well, let's just say I did a lot of fast talking." you sighed.
"And also, I have to go again Lucina." You groaned, rubbing your temples.
"I have to take Chrom on five 'bro dates' before he'll forgive me for taking you on one normal date." you muttered, rolling your eyes.

"Oh geez. Have fun!" Roy laughed.
"Okay." Lucina nodded, following you out.
She hopped in the back seat of your car, casually pulling out her phone and glancing at it.

"Uhhh- what is she doing here?" Chrom asked you in confusion.
"We're going on a bro date right now Lucina."

"Oh." Lucina looked up, winking at you.
"I'm not third-wheeling you guys or anything, but, just know... I'll have my eyes on you." She smiled triumphantly.

"Wow." Chrom shook his head.
"My daughter just cracked a joke." Chrom blinked in astonishment, glaring at you while you laughed your head off.

"That was hilarious Lucy! You finally did it!" you cheered.

"Oh." Lucina smiled.
"I suppose I did!"

Well, that's it for this story!
Firstly:
My editor is HUGE on the Robin-Lucina ship, so he couldn't edit with a clear conscience unless it was firmly established that the reader was acting as the player avatar. I love the ship as well, and I agreed that it would be among the cruelest things in this world to force someone to work on a story that would go against their OTP, which is part of the reason you got the exposition dump at the beginning of the chapter.

Secondly:
I hope the whole "player avatar" concept has filled you with hope, and let you realize that, truly, you are a Nintendo character. (Triumphant music blares in the background)
And even better! You don't have to be one of those stupid Mii fighters! Huzzah!

And thirdly:
I'm no used to writing from a males perspective, as this was my first time writing from one.
I'm really sorry if this chapter is not the greatest. 😅

Alrighty, that's all,
see ya next chapter!
Also: feel free to leave your requests and feedback!
Both are greatly appreciated.
Bye!
