Chapter 4;

~

Small'hiss thrashed her paws as she struggled in the jet black water, heaving herself heavily. She felt her lungs start to scream for air, and her struggles started to get weaker as she felt her fur grow heavier, and her vision started to fade. "Starclan, help..." She then closed her eyes, letting her body go limp. A familiar scent wafted into her nose and her eyes shot open, finding herself laying in a ball on white grass, mist surrounding her. She lifted her head and scrambled to her paws, panting, soon gently opening her jaw and taking in the scent. She felt her fur prick as she got a better scent before gently padding after it, ears held up in alertness. She padded around for a while before she saw a tail flicking through the mist, before disappearing. She quickly ran after it, the scent coming from its direction, her fur still prickled. She stopped in her tracks as she saw the creamy golden pelt of her former friend.. Memories of her apprenticehood became vivid images before her. Her three apprenticehood friends, Usy, and Jew were two of them... The one she was seeing infront of her was the other, Tyler... Jew and Tyler had been in love, until.. Tyler willingly ran into the thunderpath, getting run over by a monster. Small'hiss had no idea where her two other friends had gone, since she ran away when she found out Tyler had died. Small'hiss shook her head and looked out at Tyler when she was brought out of her memories... He looked like a full grown warrior now, having turned and stared at her with his calming brown gaze. Small'hiss weakly smiled, padding closer before sitting down, tears filling in her eyes. Tyler padded forward, gently nuzzling Small'hiss, making the small warrior smile weakly, nuzzling him in return, taking in his comforting scent. "Small'hiss now, isn't it..?" Tyler murmured, Small'hiss frantically nodding as she started to cry into the starry figures pelt. Tyler sighed. "Usy and Jew are doing fine..." Small'hiss nodded, sniffling before looking up as he backed away, his expression turning serious. "The frozen leafbare will bring awakening of a new evil. Blood will spread along the forest, and only one can control it." The starry tom started to fade, Small'hiss's fur prickling. "W-Wait, T-Ty! D-don't go!" She called, standing swiftly, but her friend was gone before she could plea more. The white forest around her started to turn black, and she heard her name being whispered.
Small'hiss woke in her nest, Smoke'flower standing next to her, looking down at her. "Small'hiss, are you alright? You were twitching and mewling in your sleep." Small'hiss grunted gently before nodding at the other warrior. "I'm fine, Smoke'flower.. Just a strange dream." The grey and white warrior nodded, then stepped back as Small'hiss stood. "I'm gonna go hunting.. See you soon, Smoke'flower." Small'hiss then trotted out of the den, through the clearing and out the entrance. She ran off on the territory, over to the twoleg place. She saw Jess sitting on her fence waiting for her and ran over, smiling brightly. Jess jumped down and met Small'hiss in the middle, the two nuzzling each other happily. It had been a while, and Small'hiss started to feel for the kittypet, without denying it. The two purred happily as they nuzzled each other, before Jess crouched down. Her tail held up playfully, Small'hiss crouched down too before bursting into a run behind her. She could hear Jess pounding after her, and she grinned brightly. She ran around, dodging trees and weaving past shriveled bushes, pounding in the snow. Small'hiss noticed a rather large tree and jumped up it, unsheathing her claws and scraping on the tree to climb it. She felt a very light sharp sensation in her tail and was quickly ripped off the tree, landing on the snow with a thud. She purred as she opened her eyes to see Jess standing above her, her amber eyes shining with happiness. She reached her paw up and touched Jess's nose, watching the darker kittypet blink before letting out a mrrow of laughter. Small'hiss leaped up to her paws and purred, pawing at the black shes face, meowing gently. Jess playfully tackled Small'hiss into the snowy ground, sticking her pink tounge out at the deputy. Small'hiss giggled, gently placing her paw on Jess's neck, pushing her off very softly and standing, shaking the thick snow from her pelt. Jess perked her head slowly, sniffing the air with her ears alert. Small'hiss realized the wind had changed and blew past the two cats, and she sniffed the air too. She froze up as she smelled her own clan, ThunderClan. Small'hiss turned her head to the scent, stalking after it silently, before lashing behind a nearby tree and tackling a lump of fur to the snowy floor. She heard a familiar yelp and looked down to see her own daughter, Cream'paw, underneath her, icy cold eyes staring up at her in surprise. Small'hiss scoffed and got off the small apprentice, looking to see Jess cautiously padding over, eyes narrowed and in slits as she glared at the apprentice. "Cream'paw, what are you doing this far from camp?" Small'hiss demanded as the smaller cat scrambled to her paws. Cream'paw stared up at Small'hiss shamefully, before glancing down at the snow-covered earth as her ears flattened. "I... I found your scent leading past the border... I was looking for you, since you'd been gone so long.... I followed you, and I'm sorry.. I know it's wrong.." Cream'paw admitted, murmuring. Small'hiss felt a surge of pride at her daughter being so truthful, and nodded softly. "Well, you're right. I'd best be going now." Her ear flicked and she looked back to Jess. "Farewell." She purred gently, turning back to Cream'paw. "Come on, let's head off." The apprentice nodded, and the two left the twoleg place, walking back to territory. The cats stayed silent as they walked, the emotion of guilt disappearing from Cream'paw as she saw she wasn't in trouble, while the anger of being caught faded in Small'hiss too. On the way back, Cream'paw grabbed some stems of a few herbs before they shriveled too much to be collected and Small'hiss hunted a few skinny mice. They reached camp and padded through the gorse tunnel that now had lost its leaves, and showed all the prickly barbs. As Small'hiss and Cream'paw padded into camp, Small'hiss could see Minnow'streak's tail disappear into the nursery, not being able to help letting out a soft growl. Small'hiss went to the kill pile and dropped the stringy mice, before thoroughly washing her pelt to get rid of the kittypet stench, hoping to Starclan her medicine cat daughter wouldn't tell on her. She sighed, glancing around to see her daughter disappear into the medicine den as well. Small'hiss stood and shook her fur before trotting to the warrior den. She curled up into her spot and drifted into sleep quickly, feeling nothing but aggression for Minnow'streak. Small'hiss awoke in the dark forest, with her mentor, Dark'heart, sitting before her. Dark'heart's chilling amber gaze rested on Small'hiss, purring out. "I saw how you growled at Minnow'streak again, hun.. You still want revenge, don't you?" Small'hiss growled at the mention if her former mate, then nodded at her mentor. "Well.. I know how to help that, favorite.." Small'hiss perked her ears at Dark'heart, watching the other stand up. "I wake up to a modern world, and there's nothing I can do.. While I hear the latest from the gossip of the news..." Dark'heart seemed to sing, circling around Small'hiss subtly. "People swear, they say it's fake and look up to our leader. As she speaks from a mind so bleak, she preys on her believers..." Small'hiss sat in silence as she took in her mentors words, surprised on how true this was. "Everyone's bitter, pointing their tails, seeing the worst in each other. But people are not their fur or their loyalties, or who they claim their lovers.." Dark'heart padded forward, staring Small'hiss in the eye as she mewed. "I think people are made so unequal. Some are born good and some evil. And so here I pray for one single day, we can live here peaceful." She motioned her tail at Small'hiss as she thought about her words, gently murmuring on. "The world is falling down, but nothing ever changes.. One, two, three as the claws go out, but nothing ever changes," She stood, her tail lashing as she felt the words become part of her. "The world is falling down and nothing ever changes. We're all part of a silent crowd, cause nothing ever changes.." Small'hiss was hushed to silence as Dark'heart waved her tail, padding off. Small'hiss quickly followed as she led her to a small puddle, viewing a battle between WindClan and ShadowClan. About a dozen corpses lay around the battlefield. "Twelve more killed at a little brawl. Some were only 7 moons... StarClan has prophecies to make, and sends us off to more wars." Small'hiss felt her claws dig into the black surface of grass as she stared at the battle, just like Dark'heart said, seeing apprentice bodies laying limp as well as warriors. "So we send our ceremonies and prayers to those who lost their lives, but the cycle stays and in a couple of days, fur flies and a few more die." Small'hiss shivered, growling softly as she remembered Tyler and Minnow'streak, as well as the other warriors she saw die in her lifetime. "I'm not an elder, I'm not an expert, but if you fight fire with fire I'm pretty sure it only gets worse; The flames burn even brighter." Dark'heart pulled Small'hiss away from the puddle gently, staring into her brown pools. "I know that I'm not alone when I say I love all the violence. You voice your angers to your clan, but in gatherings you're quiet." The Dark forest warrior grinned, making Small'hiss nod gently. "The world is falling down and nothing ever changes." She stood, stretching, her claws flexing. "One, two, three, as the claws fly out, but nothing ever changes." Dark'heart circled her as she flexed her claws, staring at the warrior. "The world is falling down and nothing ever changes, we're all part of a silent crowd, cause nothin ever changes." Dark'heart purred, before leading Small'hiss back to where she had woke, sitting on a tall rock above her. "I hope that when I fastforward, five-something moons, we continue to live our lives in anger and in fear." Some more dark forest cats crowded around her as her voice boomed in the forest, staring at Small'hiss. "And live to be strong and free, to do unto each other. As you'd have em do unto you, united undercover." Dark'heart motioned her tail to Small'hiss and she walked forward, staring at the other cats. "The world is falling down and nothing ever changes." She raised her voice, watching the dark forest cats. "One, two, three as the claws fly out, but nothing ever changes." She flicked her ear, the dark forest cats liking how confident she was. "The world is falling down and nothing ever changes, we're all part of a silent crowd, cause nothing ever changes..!" She growled the last bit, the dark cats yowling in approval before she turned as her mentor yowled out, the cats falling silent. Dark'heart gazed at the cats below her, looking like leader would. "As you all know, Small'hiss has been an apprentice in our ranks for a while. Today, her assessment will be made in the physical world. It's leafbare, so badgers and foxes will be prowling about. She's getting revenge on a former mate, Minnow'streak. She can ethier bring a badger or fox into her camp, to blame them on Minnow'streak's death, or rip him to shreds in private." Small'hiss felt pride surge through her as the other dark forest cats snarled in approval. Her claws flexed in and out if the soil, aggression in her eyes as her fur bristled. "Small'hiss, are you ready for your assessment?" Dark'heart let her sharp amber gaze stare at the warrior, who quickly nodded. "You've been asleep for far too long. Remember, we're watching you. Make us proud." Darkness then surrounded Small'hiss as Dark'heart's words faded, still able to hear them.
Small'hiss lifted her head and realized it was a dark night, lumps of sleeping bodies around her. She sniffed the air and found the small body of Minnow'streak laying a few nests away. She carefully padded out, feeling cautious because of Dark'heart's remark of them watching her. She stared up at the sky, clouds covering the stars. She grinned gently, then padded out of camp swiftly. She sniffed the air as she got out, hoping to find some sort of indication of a fox or badger. She found nothing where she was, but quickly decided to go around the borders to look for scents. She headed off to the ShadowClan border, stopping near snakerocks. She sniffed around, sitting for a few minutes before a sharp and recent scent of badger drifted over to her. She perked her ears and looked around, able to spot something large moving through the trees. She felt panic and excitement zooming through her. She braced herself to run back to camp as she watched the large shadow moving. The scent of badger got stronger as it circled around her, before it dashed out of the shadows with its massive figure. Small'hiss quickly turned and dashed off, hearing the badger keeping pace and the hot breath on her tailtip. "Thank you, Dark'heart!" She purred in her thoughts as she saw the camp grow closer, the badger still on her heels. She yowled loudly in hope to wake someone as she neared the entrance, then ran down the thin bramble patch of the entrance. She leaped up onto one of the branches and watched as the badger tumbled into camp, spitting. Small'hiss noticed Minnow'streak had emerged, and scuttled back as the badger stumbled in. Small'hiss scrambled along the barbs and hid in the shadows, watching silently as Minnow'streak yowled, attacking the badger. After a few heartbeats more warriors came from the warrior den and flung into battle. Small'hiss could recognize Smoke'flower running to the highrock and into the den to wake up Copper'star. Small'hiss purred in amusement as she watched the cats helplessly battle the badger, carefully watching the brown pelt of Minnow'streak. She was mainly focused on Minnow'streak as a paw batted him to the side, sending him off to the wall Small'hiss was close to. She jumped down and grabbed his scruff, dragging him out with a plan. The tom thrashed in her grip but when he saw it was just her he calmed down. Small'hiss dropped him a bit outside of camp, watching him with a gaze as if he was prey. "What was that for!? You should've let me fight!" The tom spat, glaring at his former mate. "Relax, I was saving you." Small'hiss growled in return, her claws flexing with anticipation to kill the tom. "Sure, my former mate came to save me. Why don't you have any wounds?" Minnow'streak gazed at her, and Small'hiss realized soon he would walk away and she would lose her chance. "I just snuck out of the warrior den.. I had to help." Small'hiss stalked closer to him, watching his fur bristle as he scuttled backwards. "But.. I can see it was no use." Small'hiss drew her lips back in a snarl before leaping onto Minnow'streak, tackling the tom onto the snowy ground, holding his muzzle shut with her paw to muffle his yowls of help. Her claws unsheathed longer, digging into the toms muzzle as she lifted her paw. She slashed down his stomach, digging in deeply, grinning at the muffled and strangled yowl that came from the tom below her, watching the blood and guts spill from his underbelly. The tom had a spasm on the floor as he struggled to stay with the real world, but soon his eyes glazed. She grabbed his scruff and dropped him back into camp before leaping into the battle as well. Soon, the badger had run off, bleeding harshly and yelping. Cats were laid strewn upon camp, and Small'hiss had massive wounds in her pelt. She gazed around the camp and was relieved to see no one she honestly cared about laying limp. She had succeeded in her mission to become a warrior in the dark forest... That's all that mattered. She watched as Torn'foot and Cream'paw dashed out of the medicine den with bundles of herbs, rushing to heal cats. Dew'tail snuck out of the nursery to Minnow'streak's body, nudging him before freezing up. The queen lifted her head and cried out in pain. "Minnow'streak's dead!" Copper'star, who was being healed by Cream'paw, turned her head. The medicine cat and apprentice turning too. Copper'star excused herself and stood, dragging the dead corpse to the center of camp. She crouched by the body as Dew'tail padded over as well, doing the same. Evening'slip, a close friend of the deceased warrior, followed the leader and queens guide and crouched by the corpse. The three of them shared tounges one last time while everyone else went back to their dens, including Small'hiss. Small'hiss lowered herself into her nest in the corner, quickly drifting to sleep, her wounds already been cared for as the cats went to sit vigil. She again woke in the dark forest, the exact place she was when she had woken up, everyone in the same place, as if nothing had happened. "Congratulations, Small'paw. You've completed your assessment, and now will be named as a full warrior." Small'hiss turned her head at her mentors words, the dark pelted she still perched on the rock. "Small'paw, do you promise to be loyal to the dark forest and abandon your code, continuing to learn and teach new battle moves, even if it may cost you your life?" Small'hiss shuddered as she realized they were using the same format as if this was a real warrior ceremony in the clan, although she nodded anyway. "I do." Dark'heart gazed around at the other warriors who gathered. "Is there any objections?" The crowd stayed silent ad mice, and Dark'heart continued. "Small'paw, you have proven yourself worthy of the dark forest. You will now be called your warrior nane, Small'hiss. We honor your aggression and determination, and will always welcome you here with open paws." Now the crowd cheered her earned name, and Small'hiss felt pride surge through her. Dark'heart stood up and the crowd died down, so she could speak once more. "Your next mission is to get revenge on those who wronged you. You must eliminate anyone who could get in your way. Dew'tail was Minnow'streak's mate, and she is currently expecting kits, she is your prime target as of now. There are more, but first, kill Dew'tail." Dark'heart's voice was hard as stone and cold as a leafbare river. Small'hiss gazed up at the dark cat and nodded, before she saw everything fade around her.
She woke up in her nest, the pale light of day shining into the den, and she knew her objective. She had to kill Dew'tail, hopefully in only a few days. She knew Dew'tail was the only queen in the nursery still, and her kits were going to be kitted soon. If she couldn't kill Dew'tail before the kits were born, she'd have to kill off the kits as well. She stood and stretched while licking her jaw. "Time for hunting.. Maybe I can poison the queen.." Small'hiss purred in her thoughts before skipping off.
