Chapter 4

Anne smelled a scent of alcohol very close to her nose, she frowned as she came back to her senses. A piercing sound still drilled in her ears, but it diminished as she came back to reality. She opened her eyes and spotted a man in his forties standing very close to her.

"Get up slowly," Dr. Frank was saying.
"What happened?" the girl asked as she sat up.
"You passed out. Ryan called me since you apparently hit your head when you fell."
"You scared the hell out of me," Ryan sighed in relief.
"I had a horrible nightmare. I dreamed that Justin came back and found out that Jason was his son," she said absentmindedly as she touched her head. She could feel where the impact site was. Great, I'll look like a deformed unicorn.
"You should take better care of yourself," the older man watched as the blond suddenly turned pale. He sighed. Things would get pretty rough.
"I know, doctor," the dream. "Where's my son?" she questioned feeling a sudden rush of anxiety. She needed to see her little boy right away.
"Well...," the boy started an attempt to explain while scratching the back of his neck. Why do I always get myself into this kind of trouble?
"Here," Justin replied coming out of the kitchen with his sleeping son in his arms. Anne turned pale at the sight of him.
"He's a very affectionate little boy," the brunette said looking lovingly at the little boy.
"No. No. No. No. No. No..."
"Easy, Anne, it won't do you any good to get like this after the fall you had," the doctor was trying to calm her down.
"You!" she pointed at the blonde.
"Me? What?"
"Calm down," the older man demanded.
"You brought him! Because of you, he found out about everything!"
"Anne, that's enough. You don't need this right now," Dr. Frank declared and silence fell over the place.
"I'll leave the baby in his crib," Justin said and headed for the only room in the apartment. His eyes began filling with tears. The whole thing was too damn hard, more so than he imagined.

He covered the little boy with a sheet as he wiped away a betraying teardrop that ran down his cheek. He felt the lack of that little warmth in his arms. It was the first time he had seen his son, but he was already trapped. His whole life had changed its purpose when that little toothless smile turned to him.

What should I do?, he asked to the nothingness. There weren't many people in his life who could help him at that moment. His parents weren't exactly an example he wanted to follow. And his grandfather... Well, he could make the drive to his house, but that would mean being away from Jason and Anne for a few days. Conversations with his grandfather usually lasted a whole weekend.

He squeezed his eyes shut and massaged the bridge of his nose. He couldn't leave right now. The girl was capable of disappearing off the map if she left, and once she did, he would never find her again.

He left the room and walked back to the living room.

"I can't believe this is happening..." she mumbled holding her head in her hands.
"You know I didn't mean for all this to happen like this. I just wanted you to talk."
"And what good was it going to do! The only thing that happened was that he found out about everything! All this year of suffering for my effort to go down the drain in 5 minutes!" tears began to slide down her face.
"Calm down, Anne. Come on, breathe in, breathe out. Feel the oxygen circulating throughout your body," the doctor ordered.

Justin closed his eyes and sighed. He knew already that the girl didn't want him there. The child had been a huge surprise to him as well. He didn't know how to approach it yet. The only thing he was certain of was that he didn't want to be away from them ever again.

"Better?" asked Dr. Frank after the girl had finished her breathing exercises.
"Yes. Thank you."
"I'll stay a while longer just in case."
"It's not necessary..."
"Yes, it is," Justin interrupted, returning to the room.
"You are my patient and I must look out for your well-being. Besides, I don't think there's a problem with me listening, is there?"
"No, of course not," the girl replied with a sigh.

The room fell silent.
The chestnut was thinking and thinking. He had an idea, but he didn't have enough courage to carry it out. He had the impression that nothing good would come of it.

"So, I guess this is Jason's father," the older man asked, looking at the girl.
"Yes. This is Justin."
"And he's here because...," he waved his hand so someone would finish his sentence.
"Because I told him to come," Ryan said ashamedly. Dr. Frank presented a figure of authority large enough to intimidate his 24-year-old self.
"I see," the man nodded and analyzed the situation. He knew in advance that such a scene would happen at any moment. He'd tried to talk about it with the girl, but she always evaded the subject.
"I think you should go," Anne said looking at Justin, trying to gather as much courage as she could.
"But the baby...," the brunette had started saying trying not to despair. He felt that if he left, he would never see his son again. And he wasn't willing to be away from him any longer.
"The baby, what?" she asked her voice as cold as possible.
"There are still many things you have to tell me," the boy was trying to stand his ground. He couldn't give in in this situation.
"No, there aren't."
"He's my son too, An."
"He wasn't until a few minutes ago."
"Because I didn't know about him! You can't take him away from me..."
"Yes, I can! He's my son!"
"Easy, Anne, remember it's not good for you to be angry," the doctor intervened.
"I want him gone," she said pointing to Justin.
"You're not moving me from here," the brunette crossed his arms.
"Justin...," Ryan knew he had to cool the situation down. Those two were just as stubborn.
"No, Ryan. I will not be separated from my son again. I'm going to stay and live here whether she likes it or not. I don't plan on missing another second of Jason's life."
