Chapter 18

The woman walked with a steady pace through the corridors of the dirty and dilapidated building. The silence was broken only by the sound of her heels clicking and the distant dripping of some broken pipe.

She heard murmurs that emulated a one-sided argument. She sighed before opening the apartment door. It was the only one still inhabited in the entire building.

She walked cautiously following the sound of the voice.

"No, honey. I know this is hard, but you have to understand that I'm doing everything for us."

"John?" she asked trying to swallow the knot in her throat.

The man immediately turned to where she stood pointing a gun. His furious look disappeared giving way to fear. "Rose?"

Trying to hold back tears, she walked over to him. The gun had been lying on the ground for a few seconds. "Yes, John. It's me. I'm alive," she caressed his cheek with motherly love. She could tell how lost his mind was.

John closed his eyes tightly. "You're just another trick of my mind, I know. These visions are becoming more and more common."

"Look at me, it's me. I'm right here in front of you."

He opened his eyes to see her with that look of utter love he used to profess to her. "You feel so real."

"I am real."

"I can even smell your perfume. It's like the years haven't passed and I've never lost you."

"John, it's me. I'm not dead. Those men did come for me, but they couldn't capture me. Frank paid your debt. Remember Frank? He helped me stay hidden while..." she sighed. "While you calmed down and we could go back for Anne."

"Oh, Rose. You look so beautiful."

"Listen to me. You have to stop this. You're hurting Annie. You need help. Don't you remember all those times I tried to come back for her? Why did you block them out of your mind?"

"I don't know what you mean."

"John, you've lost your mind. Ever since they started chasing us you're not the same clear-headed man. You must stop. You're hurting all of us."

"Stop it! You're just a vision," he removed the hands caressing his cheeks and began placing distance between them.

"John... If you don't end this, I will."

He took her head in his hands squeezing as hard as he could. "Go away. Go away. Go away. Go away."

Rose took one last look at the man she used to love. She turned and walked out the same door that had brought her into that hell.

Dr. Frank entered the living room of the cabin in a hurry. Ryan followed close behind him with a serious look on his face. After the meeting with Katherinne, they had made some calls and everything indicated that they needed to act fast.

Pattie, who was resting with a cup of tea, rose from the couch at the sight of them.

"What's going on?" the woman questioned.

"Anne and the baby?" asked the older man checking the envelope in his hands.

"Resting in the room upstairs, what happened?"

"Apparently, Katherinne managed to get some documents that help prove Justin's innocence," the blond replied. Pattie shared a fleeting glance with the man across from her. They couldn't reveal their entire plan yet.

The man cleared his throat. "According to this, there's a way to get Justin clean out of whatever alibi John has put together. We just have to be smart enough to stay one step in front of him."

"He's too volatile. I don't think we can continue using that strategy. His mind doesn't have the same clarity. We're not even sure he still has any plans in place. He's been behaving more violent than cunning lately."

"I know, but we can't do anything else. This," he raised the folder to his face. "It's the only thing that can tell us what his next move will be."

Pattie sighed. She hated that the guys and her grandson were embroiled in that dilemma. They had nothing to pay for and yet there they were.

"Dr. Frank?" came Anne's voice from the stairs.

The man smiled and discreetly handed in the folder to Pattie. "Hi, Annie, how are you feeling?"

"I had the strangest dream," she came down the steps as fast as she could, "Ryan, do you know where Justin is?"

Ryan gulped. "I'll try to contact him," he said and walked away.

"Have a seat," the green-eyed woman sweetly indicated giving up her place on the couch. Anne eyed her suspiciously before sitting down. "How's the baby?"

"Fine," she replied curtly.

"Let me take care of this, Patricia," Dr. Frank suggested gently. The woman agreed and headed toward the kitchen. "Do you want to talk about the dream?"

The brown-haired woman looked at him straight in the eye with fear. "We need to find Justin. Please. I had a similar dream when Mom died."

"Easy," he took a seat next to her and took her hands in his. "I'm sure he's fine. He must be working or trying to figure out where you are."

"That's the problem. He's not going to stop until he finds out where we are and John knows it. He's going after Justin!"

"John?" he frowned.

"He said Justin was a criminal and he could do a lot less damage to Jason. It was the same thing he told Mom when they were coming for him. He's planning to make him disappear like he did to us," she began crying. "I didn't believe him. I labeled him a criminal. Now he's out there at the mercy of the only man who has enough nerve to leave my son fatherless."

Dr. Frank hugged her. Things were looking more and more complicated. John would lose his mind at any moment and they would be unable to control him.

"There's a problem," Ryan announced walking back into the living room. "I couldn't contact him in any way. No one from work has seen him around either," Anne began trembling.

"Did he tell you where he was going?" the older man questioned.

The blond looked nervous. "He said he'd track down Anne and Jason's whereabouts, I didn't know they were here! I thought, by this time, he would have gotten to where they were and the police would take care of it."

"Why didn't you say so earlier?"

"I assumed he wouldn't be such an idiot as to go without police backup, but it seems his suicidal tendencies are getting more and more intense," he stroked the bridge of his nose. "I'll try to contact him again," he said and walked away once more.

Dr. Frank rose cautiously from the couch leaving the sobbing girl on it. "I'll call the police," he announced and walked toward the kitchen, where Pattie was talking on the phone.

The woman looked up as she saw him entering her field of vision. Her eyes were filled with tears. "John has Justin," she said not hanging up the call.
