Lucky
Lance tapped his foot nervously as the day felt numb to his ears and his finger tips as he watched the clock. Not noticing the teacher calling his name.
"Lance." The teacher poked his shoulder with a pencil and he blinked out of his thoughts and some kids snickered.
"Sorry what did you say?" Lance gulped and saw Keith reading in the corner of the room at his desk as they shared the second to last class of the day.
"Are you feeling okay? You look a little pale dear," she asked him gently and Lance shrugged.
"Well I got a note for you from the office, your suppose to go visit after class alright?" She smiled handing him a piece of paper and he nodded looking at his desk.
"Really Lance, are you okay?" She asked and Lance nodded.
"I'm fine Mrs Jane," Lance gulped and Keith glanced up at him curiously and they locked eye contact. Keith raised an eye brow and Lance shrugged biting his lip.
They waited till the bell rung and left the class room. Lance walked to Keith and immediately grabbed his hand with a small sigh.
"Seem iffy, what's up?" Keith asked flatly and Lance looked at the note saying he had to go to the office.
"Wanna come to the office with me?" Lance asked clearing his throat.
"Sure, I don't need you passing out on the way there," Keith teased but notice Lance out of it lately and nudged him.
"Dude what's your problem?" Keith asked slightly concerned.
"If I didn't know any better I'd say you'd care mullet," Lance smiled at him as they got to the office and he handed them the paper.
"Oh your mom called saying your excused for the day, family issue I believe," the woman smiled up at Lance he seemed to look paler.
"Is she okay?" Lance asked quickly.
"She's fine dear, at least what I know, she didn't say much," the woman explained and Lance nodded grabbing his keys from his backpack and went to leave.
"I'll come with," Keith followed.
"You got class," Lance gulped as he glanced outside to get home sooner.
"It's math, I can do that shit on a calculator, sounded important, let's go," Keith smirked and Lance slowly nodded as his heart skipped a beat getting closer to the car.
"Is it cause your dads coming home today?" Keith asked as he got in the car and lances hand shook as he went to start his car.
"Do you think he got out eariler or-" "don't think about that yet, maybe she's just giving you a break for the day before the weekend since Rachel is back," Keith put his hand on his knee for Lance to look at him.
"Your right..." Lance gulped again as his throat felt dry and reversed the car. After a few seconds passed getting on the road Keith finally gave in and turned on the radio to the car and frowned at the first song.
He noticed Lance seem to relax as the music settled in the air and he tapped his fingers to the beat on the steering wheel. And he started to hum again. Keith was about to snap at him again for the singing but held it back when Lance started to sing to the song to relax himself. (I do this when I drive:))
"Backbeat, the word was on the street," Lance sang along with just as much passion in the song as he made a face to it with a small smile.
"That the fire in your heart is out," he nodded to the song.
"I'm sure you've heard it all before, but you never really had a doubt," Lance smiled a little at Keith as he pointed at him smirking.
"I don't believe that anybody feel the way I do about you now," he closed his eyes for emphasizing but opened his blue eyes on the road again.
"And all the roads we have to walk are winding," Lance moved his hand out the car to the wind as if it was a wave.
"And all the lights that lead us there are blinding," Keith watched in slight awe at his voice as Lance seemed like the guy that sang his heart out but wasn't good at it, like to beyonce but suck at it.
"There are many things that I would like to say to you... But I don't know how," Lance paused as he looked at the road lost in his own head once again.
Keith looked at him sentimentally and let out a deep annoyed breath closing his eyes.
"Because maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me..." He mumbled the lyrics and Lance grinned brightly looking at him with a gleam in his eyes.
"And after all, you're my wonderwall..." Keith sang softly looking out the open window feeling the breeze through his thick black hair.
"So you can sing," Lance giggled and Keith glared.
"Don't get use to it lover boy," Keith pouted and Lance chuckled softly as they pulled up to his house.
"Oh I will," he turned off the car and got out leaving his bag in the car and Keith got out as well seeing blue excitedly run up to Lance and he cooed at his pitbull as she licked his hands excitedly.
"Come on good girl, let's find rach," Lance spoke in a baby voice to his dog and Keith followed behind him silently as Lance walked inside first.
"Ma?" He called and saw the house in perfect condition, as if his mother spent the day vacuuming the ceiling as well.
"Thank god your home, moms going nuts," Rachel walked to her twin and grabbed his shirt and dragged him away.
"Hey Keith," she waved at him and Keith made a face in surprise.
"Isn't that lances jacket?" Keith asked confused at the green jacket on the girl.
"Yep but we got matching ones when we where like ten from abuela and I left mine back at the dorms," Rachel said as Lance was able to walk without being dragged as they saw Maria straightening Leo and Rosys room up with the vacuum in the doorway.
"She's singing Elvis again," Rachel sighed leaning against the door as maria had headphones on to music. A gift she only used when she was stress cleaning.
"Mama you know the grandkids are going to ruin the room again when they get home," Lance walked over to her and Maria had a towel over her shoulder.
"Oh they better not if they're living under my roof-" "mama, they're kids, your telling me our house has never looked like a white woman that owns a lotion company's home?" Lance gripped both her shoulders smiling.
"Where's Jess?" Lance asked gently.
"I sent her out to get pasta noodles- oh no do you think chicken Alfredo is good enough for a whole family meal? I should've just gotten take out or-or even maybe take everyone out to eat at a nice restaurant," Maria panicked with wide eyes and Lance kissed her head.
"You make the best pasta mama, I'm sure everyone will love a home cook meal from our favorite rather than a noisy restaurant waiting on lousy food that we don't know where it's been," Rachel dropped her arm around lances shoulders smirking.
"You know Keith doesn't know how to really cook, can you show him the good ol McClain style? I mean you even shower Allura a few things," Lance patted her shoulders as Keith turned red looking at the mischievous twins.
"I'm sure I can handle that, can you two finish sweeping and vacuuming the house please?" Maria asked her youngest as she seemed to calm down and they nodded as Keith sent Lance a pleading look and he smirked darkly waving good bye.
"You don't have to lie on not knowing how to cook Keith, but a extra set of hands would be nice," Maria sighed putting her hair up walking in the kitchen and Keith rolled up his sleeves.
"Actually I don't cook a lot, best I can make is a sandwich," Keith gulped and she smiled gently.
"Did anyone ever teach you how to cook? Bake? Grandmothers usually love it, especially with a cute little nieto like you," Maria smiled up at him and Keith shook his head.
"Um no, not a lot of women in my life," he shrugged. "It was my dad and I for a while,"
"I see, what was your father before?" Maria asked noticing he must've be around anymore.
"He was a fire fighter, it's how he died too," Keith shrugged not looking at her.
"Brave man, you must be a lot like him," Maria's smile was kind and proud. Keith smiled a bit and nodded.
"Can you tell me about lances dad? I mean he never tells me much except for he was caught drunk driving," Keith gulped and Maria looked at Keith sadly.
"He still uses that story?" She sighed shaking her head. Was Lance lying?
"Well it's partly true, he was drunk driving with Lance and Rachel in the car, they where in a accident and that's how John got arrested, Rachel was in the backseat and Lance was in the front..." Maria pursed her lips and looked down.
"That was the worst phone call I've ever gotten, saying my ten year old son and daughter have been in a tragic accident, luckily they all survived... Doctors didn't know if..." She gulped hard and Keith put a hand on her shoulder nodding.
"Was it Rachel the doctors thought wasn't going to survive?" Keith asked softly and Maria shook her head unable to continue.
"I'm sorry Keith, it's a horrid memory for a mother and her littlest ones," Maria inhaled deeply.
"I'm sorry, I won't ask again," Keith said with guilt.
"No no honey, it's alright, it's been time and my babies are well and alive, all my children are here and I have two wonderful grand children, soon three, I'm happy and grateful," Maria sighed and smiled at Keith and he nodded.
Keith went to wash his hands as he thought of what Lance was hiding. It made sense why he was crying when Rachel came back, why he didn't like to talk about it, why he gave up something like education to Rachel for a great school when he was just as smart. Cause who knew if she'd get the opportunity again? Lance would give up anything for family..
They where lucky to have Lance as a brother and son.
