Chapter 11
"That's it," Tommy said, noticing Tubbo's chattering teeth in the darkness, "I don't care if Clay will be able to find us, you and Tubbo are going to freeze to death if we don't set up camp." Tommy and Drista were made to live in extreme climates and Wilbur didn't feel anything, but Sapnap was still mostly human and Tubbo wasn't made to live in extreme cold like this.
"N-n-n-no," Sapnap said, trying to stop his own shivering, "w-we c-can't risk it."
"He'll have to stop as well," Drista pointed out, "I agree with Tommy we have to set up camp and start a fire."
"I can go look for firewood," Wilbur said, "Come on Tubbo and Tommy. You guys set up the tent."
"I'm not sure that's a good," Drista started as they walked away, "idea."
"I guess we're being forced to set up a tent," Sapnap said, staring at the cloth and sticks they had brought to set up a makeshift tent.
"Are you sure it's a smart idea to leave them to set up the tent," Tubbo asked, he nearly ran into a tree before Tommy pulled him out of the way, "thanks."
"I'm sure they'll be fine," Wilbur smiled, "I mean how hard can it be to set up a tent."
To Sapnap and Drista, very hard apparently.
"I'm pretty sure you tie the rope to a tree," Sapnap said.
"Well then what are the nails for," Drista asked as the tent fell apart, "look what you've done!"
"Well excuse me, 'Malady' but I believe it was your fault for not knowing how to pitch a tent," Sapnap mocked.
"Oh, I'm sorry I didn't have all the nice tutors you had, you're royal demigodness," Drista snapped.
"What is going on with you two," Tubbo asked as he and Tommy dropped a pile of firewood, "I thought you guys would have the tent set up by now."
"You left me with him/her," They said at the same time pointing at each other.
"I thought you were getting along just fine," Tommy said, he knelt down and started looking through the pile trying to find good sticks to start a fire. As he spun the stick in the bark smoke started to rise and sparks flew. Tommy's hands began to shake and his breathing started to race. Tubbo put a hand on his shoulder and Tommy stopped, looking up to him. They exchanged a few silent words before Tommy eventually nodded and stood up, letting Tubbo take his place. Tommy walked back into the forest, why couldn't he get over it. He had done it every night, trying to start a fire but getting too anxious while doing it. He stayed a good distance away from the fire that Tubbo had started for them.
"I'm sure you'll be able to do it one day," Tubbo chirped, sitting next to him as the flames danced across his face.
"9 years," Tommy muttered, "It'll be nine years in two days since the cabin fire. And I still can't start a fire myself."
"Well that's why you have me," Tubbo smiled, "You've been like my brother since I got here. So why can't I be here for you?"
"Thanks, I'm glad to know you'll always be by my side," Tommy brushed away the tears with his sleeves and stared into the fire. His face heated up and he bit his tongue as it felt like he was getting burned all over again.
"Tommy," Wilbur gestured for him to come over, "you remember the song right?"
"Song," He asked as he and Tubbo gathered around the small fire, Tommy sitting the farthest away.
"The one about L'Manburg, you helped me write it," Wilbur said and began to sing a tune.
It all started on a day like any other
All the salmon had swum to the sea
Tubbo yawned and leaned against Tommy as he closed his eyes and swayed to the melody. Drista and Sapnap forgot all about their argument. Wilbur smiled as he looked to the starless sky, longing for the days before he had been sent to war.
When my lover she darted away down the stream
With the heart that she'd taken from me
Not too far away Dream and Bad had started their own fire, hearing the soft singing Dream muttered something before climbing into the trees. He followed the sound under the cover of darkness until their soft fire broke through.
And my chest, though it ached, there was hope
A little beacon of light
Tommy smiled at Wilbur as his own eyes drooped and he forgot about the terrible things that had happened the past few days. He needed this moment.
Though my sunniest days are now stolen away
I still had our son by my side
Dream looked down at the scene further away. His heart twisted when he saw Sapnap genuinely happy. This was a side he hadn't seen in years, yet here he was, among enemies, happy. Years of stress of being the prince and being responsible for the human world washed away in this one moment.
And as he looked up at me with those wondering eyes
I just knew that I must protect him with my life
Drista smiled at Tommy and Wilbur, wishing that she could have a bond like that. She thought the Count was her family but this proved her wrong. This is what a family was.
And make a land that is good and a land that is free
For the better of you and of me
They all forgot about the war, the possible threats around them and the surface world above. At that moment they all felt at peace.
Ah, fluff amongst angst. This is probably one of my favorite chapters because of the last part. Sure the plans I have for future chapters will be fun to write but I like heartfelt chapters like this. Thanks for reading and please vote and comment.
Peace out YouTubers from around the world!
