Chapter 6
Zendaya's POV
I wake up for my nap and look out the window to see what looks like the desert. We've been driving for hours and I'm pretty sure we haven't even left the state yet. I pick up my phone and reach to grab the car charger to plug it in, because if I have to endure the rest of this car ride without my music I will jump out the window.
"Where are we?"
"Not sure what city but I'm pretty sure we're still in Arizona."
"Okay."
"Want to stop somewhere to stretch you legs?"
"Nah you should wait for everyone to be awake for that."
"Got it."
(AN:Thoughts are in italics)We're still in Arizona. I knew this trip would be long but not two days of driving long and we aren't even halfway there yet. It's a good thing we stopped at a motel to sleep when we first got to Arizona I can only wonder what everyone in this car would be like with almost no sleep for 24 hours. Well Trevor could probably still get some sleep, but my brother could sleep through a hurricane if he could. He actually almost slept through an earthquake. He was dreaming he was on a vibrating bed and had no idea what was going on. He is always sleeping and I don't know how he's always so tired since he doesn't do anything but annoy me. Anyway we're on our way to Houston because our dad got a job to coach college basketball down there. He didn't want to take the job at first and uproot us from Oakland, especially since I was on scholarship at my music school. But the college has found two music schools close to their campus that can transfer over my scholarship and credits, so when we get down there we'll have to check them out to see which one I'll want to attend when we get there.
"Hey Z!"
"Yeah?"
"Hand me a bottle of water will you?"
"Yeah sure."
I reach behind me to the cooler to get the water for him, and feel nothing but moisture. I turn around and lift the top of the cooler to see that all the ice from the hotel has melted and all our drinks and chocolate are floating in a pool of water. I grab a bottle of water and shake off the excess water before I hand it to my dad.
"We might need to make that stop after all, dad."
"Why?"
"All the ice in the cooler melted."
"Already?"
"We're in Arizona, Dad."
"Alright I'll stop at the next gas station, but you're waking up Trevor."
"Fine."
I hand my dad the water he wanted and sit back in my seat. I put my seat belt back on and pick up my phone to listen to music. I wish I could go back to sleep but I just woke up from a nap and once I'm awake I am awake. I would get my journal but it's all the way in the back of the car. One of my old English teachers thought I had a talent for writing. She told me to practice writing different things like fiction or even just my real life experiences. When I got into the arts school I took plenty of writing classes to learn how to write scripts, screenplays, television shows, and songs. Since I got in for music my advisor thought it was smart for me to take the song writing classes. Song writing really stuck with me and now I write a song almost everyday. Just the other day I wrote a song called "Watch Me", it's about that moment in the party when you hear your song and you dance like no one's watching but you want everyone to see you kill it on the floor. Most of my songs are mainly about two things dancing and dancing proudly in the haters faces, it's all I really know. Most of my songs are based off life experiences and all I really do is dance, write songs, and sing. I've never been in love, or had a crush break my heart, or any of that stuff. Not that I didn't put myself out there. It's just that I wasn't really into anyone I dated past physical attraction. Even though I lived in one of the most open minded states in the country, besides maybe New York, it was hard finding gay girls my age, and I'm not talking about out gay girls either. They were impossible to find at my old school, "because being gay isn't marketable to a large audience Zendaya I can't come out yet", that's what they all would say to me but i know for a fact that that is bull. Gay people follow anyone and anything that shows straight people that we exist. Why do you think so many people watched glee? Duh! Kurt and Santana! No one watched for any other characters unless you liked the cast. It's the same way in the black community. We watch things with black characters to see someone like us on the television and hope that could be us on the screen. Why do you think The Wire was so popular? Anyway all the girls that I've been with were never out, not like that stopped me or them, but there was this one girl who I dated and she was out to her family. Her name was Bella and she was my first real girlfriend. She was my partner in my improv acting class freshman year and she was my closet friend at the time. One of our assignments was to do a scene where we reveal a secret to each other and she kissed me, her secret was that she was Bi and she liked me, after that we dated for the rest of that year. I never really ask for much in a relationship, just that you need with be honest and loyal with me. If you could do those things and you were into me we would be good. I never really cared that none of my exes were out. It was the fact that they lied to me about it in the first place, that was the bad thing about it.
"Hey Z which station should I stop at?"
"Ooh do Pilot. They have always have a 'free ice with your own cup' sign."
"Why do you love ice so much?"
"Are you saying that like it's a bad thing?"
"No, it's just that only pregnant women like to eat ice."
"That's not true. Plus it's really hot back here and the ice will cool me down. Do you want me to die from heat exhaustion?"
"Whatever Z."
I reach for my Nike slides and put them on since we're about to stop soon, and grab my sunglasses from my travel bag and put them on. My dad starts to make the turn to the exit and I start to get my stuff on before he parks the car. He pulls up to the pump and parks the car. I grab the trash bag we've been using and empty it before I head into the station to see if I can get my free ice. I dump the bag and walk into the air conditioned gas station. Oh God that air conditioning feels SO GOOD right now. Walking to the back I grab a sprite and a two red bulls from the fridge, then I walk around the snack section for a little bit before a bag of Skittles and a bag of Doritos. I pay for my stuff and make sure I get a new bag for trash and go back to the car. I get back to see Trevor and my mom starting to wake up and my dad cleaning the dead bugs off the windshield. UGH! I get back in the car and tap my brother to wake him up.
"What Z?"
"Empty out the cooler."
"Why?"
"Because all the ice melted."
"Already?"
"We're in Arizona. It's hot everywhere."
"Why do I have to do it? Why can't you do it?"
"Because I can't lift the cooler out of the car."
"Ugh fine I'll do it."
"Thank you."
He does what I asked him to do and then he goes into the gas station, probably to buy something to wake him up, after a minute he comes out with a bag in his hand and starts walking back to the car. I take my snacks out of the plastic bag and put them into my book bag I have just for my snacks. The only thing I don't keep in my bag is my chocolate because it would melt, so I keep that in the cooler. Trevor puts his snacks down and goes back the gas station to get the bag of ice we needed and refills the cooler before putting it back in place and sitting back in his seat.
"Is that better for you Queen Z?"
"Yes that is better for me, thank you brother."
"Whatever. I'm going back to sleep."
"I don't think you should go to sleep yet, you might have to drive soon."
"Fine."
My dad finally comes back to the car after paying and stops at the window.
"So there are a few restaurants close by that we may be used too. What do you guys say to lunch?"
"Sure it might wake us up."
"Okay. There's a SteakNShake(AN:I love SteakNShake) down the road. That good for everyone?"
"Yeah that should be fine as long as they have a salad or grilled cheese for me I'll be good."
"Alright then lets go."
We go eat and everyone but me gets a burger. I get a grilled cheese with a side of fries, because I'm a vegetarian. Being on the this road trip has sucked for me because all there is on the road is burger joints and I can only get sides and plates of old lettuce with ranch sauce on it wherever we stop to eat. At least McDonalds and other fast food places have salads now. I just take out the chicken, or whatever meat it is, and eat the rest. Normally I would feed it to my dog, midnight, but since my baby's not on the road with us I either give it to Trevor or throw it away. I can't wait until we get to Houston so I can find the places that serve Vegetarian meals so I can stop eating like this. Living in California it was fairly easy for me to find vegetarian food. I hope moving to the number one grilling and BBQ state in the world will leave me with some options for food, but I guess I won't find out until I get there. After we eat we get back on the road. I think it's gonna take take us another day to get to Texas, because we still have to go through New Mexico before we get there, so I take out my journal and start writing until I get tired, then I fall asleep again for the rest of the drive.
AN: FINALLY I'M DONE! This one chapter has taken me longer to write than the entire story as a whole. I'm joking, but not really, because this chapter took forever. Anyway hi, sort of a filler chapter for you but say hello to Zendaya everybody. She and her family are driving from Oakland all the way to Houston and that is one long trip, because that is at least four states to drive through. Next chapter will be back with Dinah and the girls and chapter 8 will be a little time jump to Z arriving in Houston. Vote and Comment because I like seeing that stuff. One last thing Happy First Day of Tour Fifth Harmony! Those blue outfits tho, you killin em girls! Hope you enjoyed this and I'll see you next chapter.
Happy Reading
Peace,
Meags
