Ch 4: The Road
We spent the night with Xellos which gave me a chanch to speak with him without Runt around. We sat at the table with a small candle lit. "So what are your ties to Lina?" Xellos asked. I told him I was her apprentance and that we traveled for a bit before Naga stole Lina to go on a trip. He seemed intrigued by the my travels and asked if i could conjur the Dragon Slave. "Sadly I can't." I told him. My strongest spells I have right now is Fire Ball, Flare Arrow, and Explosion Array. The others are weak but can be used in different ways. We talked a bit more till we grew tired and called it a night.
~The next morning~
I was woken up by Runt asking for food. The little pup wags his small tail waiting for an answer. "We'll stop at the next town for lunch." I told him. I got dressed and we said our good byes to Xellos. We might run into eachother again someday.
We've been walking for about three hours and there has not been a town in sight. In fact, we haven't seen any other travellers since yesterday. As we walked, I noticed a foul smell in the air. It smelled like rotten flesh and metal. I saw a traveler laying on the side of the road with their back towards us. "Are you okay?" I asked at a distance. The traveler looked to be a young boy, younger than me, with a sword and sheld drawn. I drew my sword and walked towards him cautiously. Runt was not far behind with his claws ready and fangs bared. The boy seemed to be unconscious. He also had a huge slash on his chest but he'll survive.
I decided to bring him along and give him to a cleric in the next town. I knew a some white magic but only the basics. His condition needed a professional. We stopped so I could treat his wounds to stop the bleeding. I was almost done with his arm when Runt pushed me away. A huge club came smashing down on the boy killing him and missing me. "Runt! Why didn't you warn me sooner?!" I yelled as I avoided another deadly swing. "It snuck up on us and I didn't sense it till it was too late!" Runt explaned. I looked at our assaulter to find out that it was a golem. The club was its arm. I decided to cast Freeze Arrow and aimed. The spell didn't do much but froze the body with thick ice. "Now's are chance! Run!!" I yelled. Runt and I ran down the road to distance ourselves from the golem.
I gasp for air after that sprint which got us a few miles ahead of the golem. Runt passed out of exhaustion. Who can blame him, he is still a pup. I felt bad for not saving that guy. Hopefully I don't get haunted. But wait....I can get him cloned. I heard that Lina made a clone of herself at a necromancy cult or something. But I would need some DNA. Looks like I'm heading back to the battlefield. I pick up Runt and swung him over my shoulder as I start the walk back to the golem.
An hour later
We hid behind a tree waiting for the golem to move so I could get the body. It seems that the boy wasn't crushed but was close to the impact to seem so. 'He's still alive! But now there are more freaking golems!!!! And I don't have any effective spells against them!!!!!!!!' I thought to myself as possibly over ten golems came into view. "I should just blow them all away." My eye starts to twitch with frustration. Runt puts a paw on my shoulder. "Look." He points with the other paw. Paw? Or hand? What do werewolfs call them? I brush away the question and look at what he's pointing at. I turn stone at what I saw.
~Intermission~
Lina: Oh? I didn't see you there. I'm Lina Inverse, the beautiful sorceress that hunts bandits and saves the world from time to time. You caught me at a bad time right now. *gestures to a table full of stacked dishes of empty plates and a waiter setting down more food* Girl's gotta eat too. *wink*
Royal Guard: Ahem. Lina Inverse you are under arrest for destroying multiple towns and villages.
Lina: Hey! I had to use the Dragon Slave for those battle! If I didn't the towns and villages would of been destroyed!
Man: But you destroyed them!
Lina: HUH?!?!?!
Everyone in the restaurant: Yeah!!
Lina: Oh look at time. I must get going..... *dashes out the door followed by a angry mob*
~Back to your regularly scheduled program~
I stare at the chimera commanding the golems to bring dead bodies of adventurers to a big pile. The smell was gag worthy since it was impossible not to do so. I've seen my share of battles but this was too much even for me. I had to cover Runt's eyes. Now would be a good time to have Naga around since she can definitely handle this. I start to move back so I wouldn't be detected. I heard a snap of a trig behind me. I tried to turn around but something grab hold of me.
To be continued~
